Emma bit her lip uncertainly. They were still parked at the side of the road and she was thinking over what Regina had just told her. "So, how does one go about breaking a curse?"
Regina squared her shoulders. "True love."
"What?!" Emma looked at her in shock.
"Oh relax, you don't have to find your soulmate to do it. Although that would likely be the surest way of breaking the curse. No… I think you'd be able to do it if you can get your parents to believe in their love for each other."
"My parents? What do you… oh. You mean Mary Margaret and David don't you?"
"Yes." Regina affirmed, shifting a little uncomfortably in her seat.
Emma sighed, still not wanting to believe what Henry had been telling her since the day they had met. It was just too... weird. "But they already like each other."
"We need true love's kiss."
"But they've already kissed too. On multiple occasions as a matter of fact. Mary Margaret wouldn't stop going on about it for weeks. Their kiss doesn't break the curse Regina. Maybe I do need to find my true love after all." Emma grumbled, slumping into her seat.
"It can't just be any kiss." Regina said as if this was the most obvious thing in the world. "They both have to believe that they are meant to be together. They both must believe in true love, and that nothing can stand in the way of that love. Right now they both have doubts because of Kathryn. David feels guilty because he feels he owes it to her to stay, and Miss Blanchard is still worrying about what will happen if she breaks up his marriage."
Emma buried her face in her hands, groaning. "This is too much at once. I can't believe you're springing this on me this way."
"How else would I tell you dear? It's not really something I could have prepared you for." Regina said sympathetically.
Emma had a faraway look on her face. "No... I guess not." She responded distractedly. She eyed the mayor sideways. "So this means... are you really... you know, her?"
"Yes I am. But I promise you're safe from me if that's what you're worried about."
"Well that's a relief." Emma mumbled, sounding not entirely truthful.
"It's true." Regina insisted. "I'm not evil. I've just been pushed into doing bad things. I don't want to be the person I used to be ever again."
"Really?"
"Yes. I can't be that person and be Henry's mother at the same time, and Henry is the only thing that matters to me. I only allowed the darkness to take over me in the past because I thought it made me stronger, but I was wrong. It's Henry that makes me stronger."
When they had finally got back to Storybrooke Emma was the only one fully awake. Henry was still fast asleep in the backseat, and Regina was leaning her arm against the window frame, her head was leaning heavily on her fist. Every once in a while her senses would kick back into action, but then within half a minute her eyes would be drooping shut again.
"Regina." Emma whispered, nudging her arm a little.
"Hmm?" Regina murmured sleepily.
"We're back. We just got to your house."
"Oh." Regina reluctantly sat up, not wanting to walk the short distance to the house. She covered a yawn with her hand as she glanced into the backseat at Henry. "What are we going to do about him?" She said with a small smile.
"Try to wake him. If that doesn't work we may have to carry him." Emma joked.
As the two women got out of the car, they were hit with the fresh smell of midnight in Storybrooke. Regina sighed in appreciation as she stared up at her home.
"Henry." She heard Emma say as the blonde leaned into the backseat.
"Five more minutes." Henry replied, not opening his eyes.
"No, Henry," Emma laughed as she unbuckled his seatbelt. "It's not morning, you still have hours until you have to get up. But we need to get you to bed first."
"I am in bed." Henry murmured, turning into a more comfortable position.
Emma stepped back from the car as Regina arrived at her shoulder. "Do you think I actually should carry him? He's pretty out of it."
"That's sweet but you don't have to do that." Regina insisted kindly.
"Alright." Emma grinned, staring at the sleeping ten-year-old again. "I'll grab his backpack then."
Regina leaned into the car and shook his arm gently. "Henry." She said softly.
Henry murmured in protest, still mostly asleep.
"Henry, sweetie it's time to wake up. We're home."
Henry groggily opened his eyes. "We're back?"
"Yeah, we are." Emma said from the other side of the car. "And it's time for us all to get some sleep."
"What–" Henry yawned into his hand. "What about all my stuff?"
"Don't worry about that tonight, we'll get it all unpacked tomorrow. It's too late to do it now. Here, just take your backpack."
"Okay." Henry said, taking it from her.
"Come on Henry. Let's get you to bed." Regina said as she helped him out of the car.
Emma shut the door after he had gotten out and then locked the car up. Regina wrapped her arm around Henry's shoulders as they all headed towards the house.
They all got ready for bed in an almost trance-like state, all of them still groggy from the long drive from Boston. Henry was just getting into bed when he heard a soft knocking at his door.
"Hey Mom." He smiled at Regina.
"All ready for bed?" She asked, coming to sit beside him.
"Yeah." He yawned into his hand.
"And just in time too." She smiled as she pushed a few strands of hair back from his eyes. "You look exhausted."
Henry nodded sleepily as she pulled the blankets over him.
"Goodnight Henry." She whispered before pressing a kiss to his forehead.
"Night Mom."
"Sweet dreams."
Regina stood up to leave and jumped as she almost ran straight into Emma, who had been standing right behind her.
"Sorry!" Emma shrugged apologetically, stepping back a little so Regina could pass. "I just wanted to say goodnight to Henry too."
"It's alright. I just didn't realize you were there, that's all." Regina replied uncomfortably.
"Sorry." Emma repeated. "I didn't mean to scare you I swear."
"It's fine." Regina replied quietly. "I'll leave you some fresh towels in your room." She said, walking past the blonde towards the door.
"Thanks." Emma followed the brunette with her eyes.
Regina glanced back at Henry before she left the room. Her eyes fell on Emma as she realized the blonde was watching her. Regina's gaze dropped quickly and she left the room without another word.
Emma turned to Henry. "Is it just me or did that seem strange to you?" She pointed after Regina.
Henry stared sadly at the door. "I think she finds it weird that you're here."
"But she said she was okay with it."
"She is. But I think that's the reason why she's acting weird. The fact that you're living with us and she's okay with it confuses her because you two were enemies for so long."
"Oh." Emma's eyebrows raised a little. "I guess I never really thought of that. So she really doesn't still hate me?"
"I don't think so." Henry yawned into his hand.
"So she seems normal to you right? Like, she wouldn't start making things up just to mess with me?"
"What do you mean?" Henry asked sleepily as he rubbed his eye with his fist.
"Nothing, don't worry about it. I'm probably just tired and overthinking things."
"What are you talking about?" Henry asked in confusion.
"Seriously, don't worry about it. If you don't get to sleep soon you'll be going to bed at sunrise."
"What time is it?"
"Almost one-thirty in the morning."
Henry just yawned again in response.
Emma opened her arms and the two shared a hug. "Goodnight kid. Sweet dreams."
"Night Emma."
"I'll see you in the morning." She said softly, although she still kept hugging the ten-year-old.
"Emma?" Henry asked after a few moments.
"What?" She asked distractedly.
"Are you gonna let go?"
Emma hadn't even realized she was still hugging him. Her mind had strayed back to the curse. She pulled back from him and studied his expression for a few moments.
"What is it?" Henry asked curiously.
"Nothing. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Okay... night."
"Night Henry."
As Emma left the room, her mind was still reeling from when Regina had confirmed all of the things Henry had been telling her over and over again about the curse and her family. It couldn't be possible that all of these stories were real, and yet, somehow she found herself believing it. This could all be some sick, twisted plan on Regina's part; having Emma start believing in the curse and then making it seem to the world that Emma was delusional. But Emma could see no reason why Regina would do such a thing. Especially not when Emma had promised never to take Henry away from her again. And Regina wouldn't want to risk making herself seem crazy to Emma by going along with Henry's stories if they weren't real. In the past, Emma had sometimes wondered if the woman was deranged, but not anymore. Either Regina was telling the truth or Emma was trapped in some very strange dream. Perhaps she would wake up in the morning and find that Henry had never even moved to the city with her in the first place.
