There were tears streaming down Regina's face as she stood rooted to the spot in the front hall of her home. She heard Emma's footsteps behind her but paid no attention to them, her focus at the moment was only on the living room. David had laid Henry down on one of the sofas, and the boy was being blocked from sight unintentionally by his grandparents as they tried to help him.
Regina flinched when she felt a hand on her arm, but relaxed as best she could under the circumstances when she realized it was just Emma.
"Sorry." Came a small voice from beside her.
She didn't respond.
Even though Emma couldn't see it, she could feel that the brunette was trembling. Forcing herself to briefly ignore her own fears about Henry, Emma studied her for a few moments.
Regina was hugging herself and her expression was hard to read. She looked heartbroken, devastated, frightened and lost.
Emma swallowed cautiously as her eyes washed over Regina, checking her for any injury she may have missed in the rush to get her inside. The faint red marks on the queen's neck were now in the early stages of turning to bruises, but apart from these and the one on her cheekbone, Regina appeared to be unharmed.
Physically at least.
Emma felt sick when she noticed the damp patches of Henry's blood on Regina's clothing. Most of it was from when Regina had been holding her dying son out on the porch, but some of it Emma realized, was from Emma's own hands.
Emma hadn't noticed that she had gotten his blood on her when she had been holding the scarf to his wound in attempt to stop the blood loss. But now, as she looked down at her own shaking hands, they were stained an unmistakable red. The remnants of the blood that had been there before she had unknowingly wiped it all onto Regina as she had helped her into the house.
Emma blinked back tears of her own as her gaze followed the brunette's towards the living room. Emma understood what Regina's hesitation was. Henry hadn't been moving at all when David had taken him from her arms. If she went into that room, it might mean confirming her worst fears.
Emma's other hand reached out for her. "Regina, I–"
But Emma's words were ignored once more as the brunette hurried into the living room, not able to handle being away from him any longer.
"Henry," Regina's voice quivered as she practically pushed David out of her way. She sat down on the sofa and pulled Henry carefully onto her lap.
From where she was seated on the sofa's edge, Snow continued to press the scarf firmly to the wound again once Regina had settled. The younger woman sniffled as she wiped a tear from her eye.
Not knowing what to do, Regina simply sat there looking heartbrokenly down at the ten year old boy she was cradling in her arms. His eyes were closed, if he was breathing it was only barely, and he felt so cold.
Even more tears blurred her vision as she pulled him closer. She buried her face against him as her sobbing came more heavily. She couldn't lose him.
Snow had to move closer to the two of them because Regina was rocking with him slowly, which made it difficult to keep the scarf in place.
Snow felt her heart break when she heard Regina whispering to him.
"Please Henry... please wake up. I need you... please, please don't leave me again. Come back to me Henry please come back to me."
"How is he?" Emma asked David.
"He's still alive but it's not looking good." He whispered.
Emma took a few timid steps closer to the couch. She wiped her eyes and knelt in front of the others, reaching out for Henry.
Her eyes washed over the scene in front of her. Mary Margaret was trying not to cry as she maintained the pressure on Henry's wound. Regina was inconsolable as she held Henry desperately close to her. When Emma glanced back at David again she saw that he was on the phone, possibly trying to call an ambulance.
Emma could feel a few tears running down her face by now. Her son was dying and she had no idea how to save him. She had never felt so helpless in all her life.
"There has to be something else we could be doing." She said to the others. "We can't just let him die! We need to get him to the hospital. I can drive."
"The crowd has grown," David said, peeking through the curtains, "I'm not sure we could safely get him to a car."
"There's no one at the hospital who could perform a surgery anyways." Snow said sadly. "Dr. Whale is the only one who could."
No one seemed to have any response.
After a few agonizingly quiet moments, Snow blinked in confusion when she saw Regina's hand covering her own. She looked up into Regina's tear-filled eyes.
"Mary Margaret, I need you to remove the scarf."
"What? Why?!"
"Regina we have to keep the pressure on it or he'll bleed out." David reminded her, stepping towards them.
"I can heal him." Regina asserted. "Gold, or at least someone, brought magic to Storybrooke. I can do it. I can heal him, I know I can."
"What?!" Emma responded. "If you can use magic why didn't you use it outside? Why didn't you stop Whale from hurting you? Why haven't you tried to save Henry already?!"
Regina looked at her wearily. "I tried using it, before you all got here. I wasn't able to make it work." She finished a little quietly.
"Well then what makes now any different?"
"Magic is tied to our emotions." Regina explained weakly. She continued clutching Henry desperately and her gaze was fixated on him again. "I may not have been able to use it outside because I was... well the point is perhaps it will work now. I have to try."
Emma stared at her a bit fearfully. "But Regina if it doesn't work–"
"Emma, I can't lose him." Regina insisted. "Please let me try."
Emma looked uncertainly at Henry. Because of the way Regina was holding him she could hardly see his face, but from what she could tell he was quickly becoming paler. She had no idea when or even if an ambulance would ever come. There was so much confusion that perhaps the employees at the hospital were too preoccupied with looking for their families that they weren't doing their job. Dr. Whale was just outside but there was no way Emma was letting him inside the house.
"Okay..." Emma agreed a bit faintly.
After sharing a look with David for another opinion, Snow reluctantly removed the scarf. Regina's hand hovered over the wound and she focused all of her energy and emotions into the healing spell.
She let out a disheartened breath when nothing happened.
"Regina," Emma said desperately.
"Just wait."
Trying to remain calm, the brunette closed her eyes and tried even harder this time. She focused her entire soul towards saving her son's life.
A few moments later she opened her eyes to see the result, but felt her heart sink when she saw the deep wound still glistening red.
"I'm sorry but we need really to stop the blood." Snow said, pressing the cloth to Henry's wound once more. "He's lost so much already."
"I don't understand." Regina's voice broke.
"It's okay," Emma said weakly. "Henry's going to be okay. We'll get him some help and everything will be–"
"I should be able to heal him!"
Emma sat down on the arm of the sofa and placed her arm around Regina's shoulders. The brunette looked devastated, there were fresh tears in her eyes and she was still trembling from the shock of what had happened.
Emma knew how she felt, because she herself was scared too.
"It's okay..." She insisted again even though she honestly had no idea what they were going to do.
She began rubbing comforting circles on Regina's back as the queen broke down again, pulling Henry into a more protective embrace and buried her face against him once more.
David took a few careful steps forward and kneeled in front of them.
"Regina?" He asked gently, placing a hand on her arm.
She either didn't hear him or was decidedly ignoring him.
"Regina, I'm going to check his pulse. But in order to do that I need you to let go of him. Just a little bit so I can feel his neck."
Regina made an involuntary noise of dread. She slowly looked up at him, the fearful look she had in her eyes didn't escape him. There was a part of her that didn't want to know the answer.
"Is it okay with you if I check?" He asked.
Sniffling, she gave a tiny nod of consent. She looked away as he reached two fingers towards the side of Henry's neck.
"I'm sorry it took me so long. I just got here, but I've been informed of what's happened." An out-of-breath voice said from the doorway. "I hope you don't mind, the others let me in. How is he?"
"Blue!" Snow exclaimed. "Thank god you're here, can you help him?"
Emma looked up to see Mother Superior standing in the door of the living room. Granny and Ruby must have let her in.
"I believe so." Blue responded. "Here, let me see him."
David backed away from the couch a bit to give Blue some room. Blue touched Henry's shoulder for a few moments, as if calculating the extent of the injury. Her hand covered Snow's gently to get her to move the scarf away. The fairy withdrew a wand from an inside pocket and she waved it in delicate, measured patterns in the air over Henry's wound.
Regina, who had raised her head only just enough to watch, could barely breathe as she waited.
The wound glowed for a few moments, and within seconds the blood had begun disappearing from Henry's clothes. The wound itself quickly followed to reveal clean, healed skin. Finally, Henry's shirt repaired itself and Blue dropped her hand.
Emma saw Mary Margaret cover her mouth with both hands as she kept staring at the spot where the wound had been. Emma herself was flooded in relief as her eyes lingered in amazement on the result of the fairy's efforts.
"He's going to be okay." Blue announced, stepping back from the group. "He'll be a little weak at first, but he should feel just fine within a few hours."
Regina gave a shaky breath that more resembled a laugh. Fresh tears were falling from her eyes, but this time they were tears of relief. She pulled Henry into a stronger embrace again, barely able to contain her happiness.
"Thank you Mother Superior." Mary Margaret said gratefully. She too had tears in her eyes as she and David shared a relieved embrace.
"Thank you." Emma echoed.
Henry moaned softly, and began to shift a little in his mother's arms. Regina relinquished her hold on him a little to give him some breathing space.
Emma moved from her seat on the arm of the sofa and kneeled on the floor in front of the couch again instead. The blonde could see the light shining in Regina's eyes again, and knew that happiness must be reflected in her own.
Henry's eyes blinked slowly open. "E– Emma?" He asked groggily as his eyes fell on her first.
"Yeah kid I'm here." She said, wiping away a few tears from her face.
"Mom?" Henry looked up into the tearstained face of his mother.
"Henry..."
"Mom! You're okay!" He exclaimed, throwing his arms around her.
She felt herself smiling as she held him as tightly as she could without hurting him. She allowed her eyes to fall closed again as she continued to hug him.
"Henry I'm so sorry, this was all my fault."
"It wasn't your fault Mom." Henry responded, keeping his arms wrapped firmly around her.
Regina took in a deep, shaky breath as she tried to calm her emotions down.
He was okay.
"Sweetheart don't you ever scare me like that again." She whispered, brushing her fingers through his hair as she held him.
"I'm sorry Mom." He responded, his voice slightly muffled against her blazer.
They remained like that for a few more moments until he felt the couch move as Emma took a seat next to them.
"What happened to that guy?" He asked, noticing the numbed pain he felt in his back.
He looked up into his mother's eyes, which were only filling with more tears. She wasn't able to respond but he felt her arms wrap more protectively around him.
"Mr. Spencer is being detained for now." Blue answered. "We'll deal with him later."
"George." Regina whispered bitterly. She'd thought she had seen him in the crowd at one point but it had only been briefly so she hadn't been sure.
Emma moved over on the couch and she and Regina helped Henry carefully take a seat between them.
"You shouldn't have thrown yourself in front of me like that Henry." Regina said quietly, wrapping an arm around him. Her other hand took one of his smaller hands in hers.
"I'm sorry." He said weakly. "But I didn't want you to get hurt."
Regina's eyes filled with emotion.
"Thank you. That's incredibly noble of you Henry." She said softly, leaning forward to rest her forehead against his. "But it's not your responsibility to protect me. Promise me you'll never put yourself in that much danger again."
"I promise."
"You really scared us." Emma said gently.
"I'm sorry." He replied, accepting the hug she gave him.
"Are you okay Henry?" Snow asked as she and David knelt in front of the sofa.
"How do you feel?" David asked.
Henry reached back towards where the bullet had been. He vaguely remembered hearing the gun fire, but he couldn't remember how it had felt since he had blacked out so quickly. There didn't seem to be anything left of it now.
Magic. He concluded. It really was in Storybrooke now.
"I'm okay." Henry replied.
Regina nodded appreciatively as she took a tissue that was being offered to her by Snow. However as soon as she wiped any tears from her eyes they were quickly replaced by fresh ones.
Henry looked over at his mother again as he heard her sniffling. He could feel her shaking from where he sat beside her and so he decided to turn into her embrace again, wrapping his arms comfortingly around her.
"It's okay Mom." He assured her. "I'm okay."
He felt Regina's arms wrap around him gratefully as she held him close once more. She pressed a long, gentle kiss to the top of his head. From where he was resting against her chest, after a while he could hear her rapidly beating heart begin to slow to a more normal pace.
Even now, he knew he had done the right thing. If he hadn't protected her he wasn't sure if anyone else would have. If she had been the one to get hurt, what if no one had wanted to help save her as they did him?
Before the curse broke, Henry had been the only one to know the truth about his mother's past. But now the roles were reversed and he was one of the only people who didn't see her as purely the Evil Queen. He knew who she had been, but that didn't seem to matter as much to him anymore. He had seen who she was now, and all he could see when he looked at her was his mother.
She was extremely vulnerable right now and instead of showing her mercy, the townspeople had used it against her. Despite all of the bad things she had done in her past, Henry knew that the people outside were wrong. She didn't deserve to die at their hands.
Emma's arms wrapped around them both and he knew there was at least one other person who was on their side. Now that the curse was broken, Henry wasn't sure why Emma wasn't angry with Regina for separating her from her family, but he was grateful that he wouldn't be alone in trying to help her. He had wanted the curse broken but he had never meant for his mother to get hurt as a result.
