...where everyone was enjoying themselves when they noticed Tommy and Jeff up on a small hill, examining their clothes.
"Funny duds they wear around here." said Tommy.
"Must be postcard picture day or something." said Jeff.
Everyone stood in silence as Tommy and Jeff walked into the square.
"Hello!" greeted Tommy.
But nobody said "hello" back.
"Oh, it couldn't be me." said Jeff. "There must be something peculiar about you."
As the townspeople kept staring at these strangers, one of them, Charlie Dalrymple, stepped forward towards Tommy and Jeff, greeting back. "Well, hello there! How did you gentlemen get here?"
"We came from Graymore," explained Tommy. "Six miles yonder."
"Six miles!" said Charlie. "Well, that's quite a distance. You must be thirsty."
He led Tommy and Jeff into the tavern, where he called out. "Sandy, how about some ale for our guests?"
Once the ale was poured and handed out to Tommy, Jeff, and everyone else in the tavern, Charlie raised his mug.
"To our visitors! And to Mr. Forsythe. I hope he knows how grateful I am to him for postponin' the miracle for me."
"The...what?" said Tommy.
"Uh, just a toast we have here, sir." explained Sandy
"And may God bless me this evenin' as much as I would bless him..." Charlie went on. "If I were he and he were Charles Dalrymple."
"We'll surely miss you seeing you at the tavern after today, Charlie." said Sandy.
"Hear, hear!" agreed the townsmen, raising their mugs.
"So will I, lads." said Charlie. "But we all know it's for the best.
I used to be a rovin' lad.
A rovin' an' wanderin' life I had.
On any lass I'd frown
Who would try to tie me down
But then one day, I saw a maid,
Who held out her hand, an' I stayed an' stayed.
An' now across the green,
I'll go home with bonnie Jean.
TOWNSMEN:
Go home, go home, go home with bonnie Jean
Go home, go home
CHARLIE:
I'll...
"Go home with bonnie Jean!" the townsmen sang as they danced and clapped along.
CHARLIE:
In Aberdeen, I used to know
A lass with an' air, an' her name was Jo;
An' every night at ten
I would meet her in the glen.
JEFF:
But now you'll not see her again
Especially not in the glen at ten
For now across the green,
You'll go home with bonnie Jean
TOWNSMEN:
Go home, go home, go home with bonnie Jean
Go home, go home.
CHARLIE:
I'll...
"Go home with bonnie Jean!" the townsmen repeated as they danced and clapped some more.
CHARLIE:
Hello to married men I've known
I'll soon have a wife an' leave yours alone.
A bonnie wife indeed
And she's all I'll ever need
TOMMY:
You wanted her at any cost
But how do you know if you've won or lost
And still across the green,
You'll go home with bonnie Jean
TOWNSMEN:
Go home, go home, go home with bonnie Jean
Go home, go home
TOMMY & JEFF:
You'll...
"Go home with bonnie Jean!" the townsmen repeated as they danced and clapped when noticing Tommy and Jeff tap dancing to the rhythm.
On seeing the attention, the two strangers stopped, but the village men urged them to do it again, which Tommy and Jeff did, impressing the men up to the point of dancing alongside them.
TOMMY, JEFF & TOWNSMEN:
Go home, go home, go home with bonnie Jean!
Go home, go home, I'll go home with bonnie Jean! (2x)
Go home, go home, go home with bonnie Jean!
Go home, go home
CHARLIE:
I'll go home with bonnie Jean!
TOMMY, JEFF & TOWNSMEN:
Home, go home,
Go home, go home,
Go home, go home,
Go home with bonnie Jean
Aye!
The sound of clapping hands got the men's attention.
They turned to see Fiona inside the tavern, saying to them. "Well sung, gentlemen."
"Thank you, Miss Campbell." said the townsmen, removing their caps with respect.
Fiona walked up to...
"Charlie, Papa asked me to remind you to come sign the family bible this afternoon."
"I'll be there." said Charlie.
Fiona, then, turned to Tommy, asking him. "I trust you found what you're looking for?"
"I have. Thanks." said Tommy, whom Fiona glanced a smile at, then hurried out of the tavern.
Mesmerized by her beauty and feeling the urge to go after Fiona, Tommy handed his mug to Jeff, telling him. "Here, ol' tank. Help yourself."
"Wa...wait! Where are you going?" Jeff called, but Tommy had already rushed out of the tavern in search of Fiona, whom he managed to catch up, asking. "Can I...carry that for you?"
"No, thank you. I'll manage." replied Fiona. "Besides, it's not far where I'm going."
