A/N: Here is the next chapter, it is a shorter one but I promise the next one will be longer. I just wanted to give you an update since there was a longer wait before the previous chapter.
Emma had been tossing and turning for over two hours. Despite not having slept the night before, she just couldn't seem to get herself to fall asleep. About an hour previously she had heard Mary Margaret, Regina and Henry's voices coming from the master bedroom, but she knew they probably wouldn't need her help so she just stayed in bed and tried to convince her brain that it didn't need to think so hard about everything and anything it possibly could at that particular moment in time.
However, here she was an hour after that, still awake and still staring up at the ceiling. She breathed a deep sigh before smacking the covers on either side of her as if it were their fault she couldn't sleep. Finally having accepted that it was useless, she sat up and tiredly passed her hand over her eyes before pushing the blankets back.
As she got out of bed and headed towards the hallway, she found herself wishing that Dr. Whale hadn't taken Regina's sleeping pills away from her. Emma could have gone for one or two of those right about now. But Whale had cautioned Regina to take as little medication as possible unless it was an absolutely necessary prescription, and unfortunately those particular pills hadn't made the cut.
Emma passed by Regina's bedroom as she made her way towards the staircase. Mary Margaret had left the door open a little bit, and when Emma peaked through the crack she could see Regina's sleeping form curled up under the blankets.
Emma gave a soft smile, glad that someone at least was getting the rest they needed. She turned and made her way downstairs, and when she was about halfway down she was greeted by her mother who was just coming out of the living room.
"Hey," Snow said in surprise as her daughter came down the staircase. "I thought you were sleeping. Is everything okay?"
"Yeah fine... I was trying to sleep but it's just not happening."
"Too much on your mind?"
"Yeah I guess."
"I could fix one of those drinks I made for Regina earlier? That might help." Snow said as she followed Emma into the kitchen.
Emma breathed a laugh at the motherly gesture. "Maybe. I'll let you know. But I think right now I'm looking for something with a little more kick. I thought I'd check the medicine cabinet for some night time cold medicine. I'm sure I've seen one in there before."
Emma opened the cabinet and began her search through the assortment of boxes and bottles. She used to find it awkward going through other people's medicine cabinets, it felt wrong somehow. But after almost two months of living here she had grown used to it, and she knew Regina didn't mind.
"What about some melatonin?" Snow suggested. "Is there any of that in there?"
"What?" Emma asked, currently reading the back of a box.
"Melatonin, it's a hormone. Our bodies create it naturally when we sleep but you can take melatonin supplements before bed to help you get more rest. It's a little better for you than taking cold medicine. Does Regina have any of those?" Snow asked, coming to stand beside her daughter to help her look.
"Umm... I don't think so." Emma said, pushing a few bottles to the side to check more of the labels. Her eyes fell on a certain bottle, and she picked it up and inspected the package. "Damn..." She said under her breath.
"What's wrong?"
"This is the one I was looking for, but I didn't realize that it was for kids. It must be for Henry."
"Hmm." Snow took the bottle to look at it.
"I guess I could just up the dosage..."
Snow bit her lip. "Well you could. But just be careful with stuff like that. There's different ingredients in here that may not all multiply equally and you don't want to take too much of anything."
"Still it's kids medicine, just doubling the dosage should be safe. Double's probably not even enough for an adult."
Snow frowned. There may have been a time when she would have agreed, but after seeing the more serious consequences of such an action in the form of her stepmother's withering health, Snow's view on the subject may have been altered a bit.
"Why don't you just have some tea or something instead?"
Emma sighed. "I guess it's worth a try." She put the box back into the cupboard and went to fill the kettle.
Once the water was beginning to heat, she folded her arms and looked at Mary Margaret again.
"So I guess David and Henry are in watching a movie? Which one did they pick?"
"Actually Henry and I are. I was just on my way to the bathroom when you came down."
"Oh, where's David?"
"He went back into town to see what we're dealing with. We have to start getting a real move on things if we're serious about getting Regina out of here. I would have gone with him but we didn't want Henry to have to be on his own." She paused, realizing how that sounded. "Oh... I mean of course he wouldn't be home alone, you and Regina are both here but–"
"No no I get it. Thank you for staying with him. He's been through a lot these past few days, I don't want him to be alone right now so really, thank you."
Snow nodded gently.
"So how about Regina? Has she gotten any better?"
"She still has a fever, but she put the compress back on when she went to bed so hopefully it will go down again. Also, her dizziness subsided quite a bit once she had some real food in her system. She seemed to be getting better, I really hope it sticks."
"Yeah, same here..." Emma responded.
"How much longer do you have until your phone call with the doctor?"
Emma glanced at the clock. "About two hours."
Snow's brow furrowed. "That's a bit late for her isn't it?"
"I think she must work evenings or something. Or maybe she wanted to wait until after her shift. Who knows, doctors schedules can be all over the place."
Mary Margaret nodded. "Well you never know, you could still try to get at least a bit of rest before then."
"I can try." Emma shrugged.
Mary Margaret gave her a soft smile. "So... I guess I'll leave you to it. I really do hope you can get some sleep Emma. You deserve it."
"Thanks." Emma smiled, leaning forwards on the counter as the brunette left the room.
Emma glanced at the kettle. She knew that there was still a bit of time before the water would be ready, and then she would have to wait for the tea to steep after that, so she decided to go back up to her room to grab her phone.
As she passed Regina's room she could hear noises from within, and a quick peek through the door showed her that Regina was no longer in bed. Emma carefully pushed the door open a little wider but she still couldn't see Regina, and then finally she heard coughing coming from the bathroom.
Emma bit her lip nervously before making her way into the room. When her eyes finally fell on the brunette, she found Regina leaning over the sink, and depending heavily on the marble countertop to support her.
Emma gave Regina a few moments to catch her breath before announcing her presence.
"Hey," Emma said softly.
