"I am never born, I simply awaken." she explained one day, unbidden. "This time, I had woken in the height of the Third Shinobi War."

Itachi had immediately put aside his shuriken practice to listen to her speak with rapt attention. She did not speak of any past lives, but she had told him of this one. He had asked how old she was and the Feline merely chuckled, green eyes glowing with dry amusement.

"When you have gotten to a certain point, little weasel, you will come to realize that age is merely an arbitrary number. You should know this well, as you are far wiser than most for your youth."

He felt his head go warm with the rare praise. Itachi figured that something must've gotten Tomomi into a good mood. He hoped it would last for the rest of the day, perhaps longer.

Then, he had asked her why? What was her purpose as she traversed through these cycles of life and death?

"I have no purpose." she told him, and he could her an undertone of bitterness laced in her words. "I am a wanderer passing through with no will but my own. That is all. Throughout these worlds I have met a great many deities and specters of the afterlife, philosophers and so-called sages — None have given me an answer for my existence yet."

Hearing her say it like that, it saddened Itachi.

He wondered if she would ever find the answer.

"Tomomi-san, what was your first life like?"

She was silent and Itachi suddenly felt as if he overstepped his bounds. He did not push for an answer and instead decided to unwrap his lunch, sharing a portion of his Tuna rolls with her.

Under the canopy of trees, deep within the outskirts of the Village, the two of them ate together in the peace and quiet.

But, bit by bit, I will knock this thing out and it will be done! ironically, I already have the ending to this written. It's just all the stuff in-between now and then that I need to write... haaaaah. Baby steps, I have to remind myself baby steps.

Stay safe out there, I love you.
