Chapter 11: Debt
AN: Wow DMC 1 21st anniversary was yesterday…I couldn't stop thinking about finally publishing this update. I've been enthralled with another fic on the side, as a reader though so time has been a bit short for updating as often as I wish I could.
Thank you so much for staying with me on this fic. I super appreciate the review by Kira and answering it, I do apologize because this fic is a bit of a slow burn, but we will get to Nero and Kyrie soon soon. I am super happy that you are invested. Sorry for the late update, life has been hectic + I had a terrible stiff back for weeks so sitting to write at the end of the day was quite difficult. Anyways, onto the new chapter.
Chapter 11
Some time passed by and things at Devil May Cry finally settled, first Kyrie and Nero behaved like a married couple, really funny (not before hearing a mouthful from Patty, who although being younger behaved like a hysteric mother, she just couldn't believe they were already going to be parents at such young age). Dante continued to be his crazy self and Vergil, well Vergil was just that…Vergil. Quiet, mysterious, busy.
That morning Dante and Nero went on a mission and Kyrie, together with Patty, went shopping for baby clothing…so it was only Anne and Vergil, who, by the way, was doing some paperwork upstairs, in his study/bedroom. It was no news that quite often he would spend a great deal of his time studying books locked away in his 'little sanctuary' as Dante so often called it. He preferred to go on evening jobs with Dante, or even solo on his own missions for most of the time. Whoever his clients were he'd only accept the highest paying jobs. Not even a devil hunter as experienced as Dante could figure out how he could have landed such a solid client like that.
It was when the doorbell rang, that Anne left her duties to check who it was.
"I finally managed to find you! Long time no see, Miss Anne!", said a rounded faced man around forty, who didn't look quite happy.
"Mister Roberts?", Anne just couldn't believe it, the man who didn't get tired of remembering she owed him money, money which she still owed because of her parent's house. Everything began when her parents died almost 3 years before. They were buying a house, paying instalments every month. But when they passed away their life insurance wasn't just enough to pay the rest of their debt, so she still owed him more than fifteen thousand dollars.
"Yeah, it was hard finding you miss, thought could get away from paying your debt huh?"
"No Sir!", that man just scared her, he seemed ready to pounce every time they met, always threatening her. I am saving money so I can fully pay you my debt, but it's a big amount of money, that's why I couldn't pay yet! Don't worry as soon as I have the money in hands I'll pay, I am keeping that in mind."
"And when would that be?"
"I don't know Sir, I still don't have a quarter of the total amount, I've just started working again, but I assure you I am saving up."
"And what do you want me to say to you? Oh miss, I'll wait till you can pay, thanks for your attention...NO...I WANT MY MONEY NOW, do whatever you need to, but I want it, and want it FAST.", he was redder by the moment, "Do not think I'll wait three more years to retrieve my money? I will charge interest!"
Anne started to panic and tried to think on ways to make him give her more time to pay, since she couldn't pay it just yet. She was young and she was just starting to keep her head above water. She had a couple thousand saved up, but not enough to pay for her whole debt.
"Sir, can't we discuss ways of me paying you in instalments, please, I still don't have all that money.", she was in the verge of tears.
"I've already given you enough time, be in my office tomorrow! There will be no more delays. Do what you have to do."
"Yes, Sir, I'll be there.", she said this as she closed the door. She had absolutely no idea how to react. What was she to do? "How am I going to pay this fast?", she thought to herself, while passing her hand through her face, in a sign of clear anxiety and fear.
Little did she know she wasn't the only one thinking about her everlasting problem.
Vergil who was doing some paperwork upstairs heard all her commotion downstairs. Although he wasn't the one to sympathize with mundane issues like that, he hated to see men taking advantage of the vulnerable. He could her sobbing after she closed the door. He had very little information on who that woman was, he could not say that he particularly cared. He had to admit though, that he found her to be rather exquisite ever since he told her not pay for that glass statue that she had broken a while back. She insisted and left a little envelope with a little over a thousand dollars in it. She had word, he could say that much.

After arriving from a job with Dante, Vergil went straight to his room to take a shower and relax. As he opened his room he noticed a small envelope under his door. That was rather unexpected, so he crouched and took the small envelope in hands. The paper envelope neatly had his name written on cursive: 'Vergil'. Opening it, he found a piece of paper and little more than one thousand dollars enclosed with a small note that read 'Please inform me if this money isn't enough to pay for that statue I broke. I apologize again. Anne'.
He couldn't believe the woman's boldness since not only himself but his twin had told her there was no need for her to pay back for that broken piece of décor. She should just keep the stupid money. He had no interest in having any other type of exchange with the lady. But he had to admit that after that he started seeing the woman under a different light.

Vergil only felt an urge to go and help the girl solve her problems. It was a weird and sudden 'feeling', although he would never admit to that. That was starting to creep the hell outta him, since he wasn't the one for feeling and sudden urges of charity… he would do something about it for once and for all...but not then.

Anne woke up and went straight to Dante's room to ask if she could leave the house to solve her personal affairs, he said she could, so she only made breakfast that morning before leaving.
She managed to take all savings she had left, it was no more than two thousand dollars. That man, he wouldn't accept …she was lost. He would send her to collections. The interest alone would be way too heavy to bear…She was between a rock and a hard place.
Even though she took her wallet and purse, when she was about to open the door and leave, a voice coming from upstairs she never thought to hear directed at her asked her to wait. That voice was a mix of determination, annoyance and ice. It was hard to read.
"I must be crazy...That's what little sleep does to you, silly Anne!", she scolded herself.
But she wasn't hearing voices, it truly was Vergil who talked to her and now was walking towards towards her, seeming ready to leave as well.
"I'll accompany you, if it doesn't bother you, of course.", he said as casually as he could. He was as surprised as Anne. What happened was a succession of surprises that he wasn't sure he could understand just yet.
She thought it was a dream, she couldn't believe her ears, but managed to say a "of course you may accompany me."
"Are you headed for your hometown? I could not fail to observe your…predicament."
Anne was really embarrassed, but nodded her head in agreement.
"I may help you solve this issue.", he stated.
"No Sir, there's no need for you to step up; I'll explain I can't pay him right now, he has to understand."
"That will not solve the problem at hand. I will intercede and take the debt off your hands."
"No, Sir I cannot accept that...", she was cut off abruptly, since Vergil hated to waste time in babbling.
"After you."

She couldn't argue anymore since they were already at Devil May Cry's garage about to step in Vergil's sleek black Audi S4.
She was so ashamed she didn't even know how to behave near him, let alone how to behave herself inside HIS car.
The way was long and neither of them talked unless it was about how to get on that man's office.
She only woke from her reverie when she noticed they were already there.
"Sir, please, I...", she was cut off again.
"I won't hear any of it."
Both entered the office and Mr. Roberts eyed her suspiciously …he already knew she didn't have enough money to pay his debt.
"I bet you brought your boyfriend to help you escape, but there's no running away from paying your debt..."
"How much?", Vergil asked coldly and straight to the point.
"Smart girl, selling yourself so you could get rid of debt...We do what we gotta do, that's right…Are you sure she's worth it?"
"How much?", he asked again, this time aggravated, pen and cheque in hands.
"Fifteen thousand and three hundred dollars."
Vergil filled a personal check and handed it to him. He was precise, dry and ready to turn around and leave that pigsty. Anne just watched the scene in awe only being awakened when she felt a cold and smooth hand on the low of her back, like a cold phantom, urging her to move forward and leave that place.
Having the words come back to her mouth was proving to be even harder than what she imagined. "Thank you so much Sir, I'll pay you even if it is the last thing I'll do in my life, I just don't know how to thank you enough for such kindles…I, I…!"
"Take your time."
"Thank you.", she said in-between tears.
Vergil thanked whatever Gods existed that he could hold the steering wheel instead of obeying his confused brain which told him to go and dry her tears with his own hands.
Please Review, it would mean a lot to then I can see people are enjoying this.
Thank you sooo much everyone!
