An Eye for an Eye
Patch was on the prowl. He knew that Jack Slate was on the vicinity. Out of the same limo he had arrived in, Meeshaka and Shadraka, Fahook's twin bodyguards.
Meeshaka said to Patch, "Patch, are you sure you need your Mayhem Inc. comrades in on this?"
Shadraka said, "He is only one man."
The twins' Arabic accents caught Patch's attention as he turned to the twins. "I know what Slate is capable of. He killed some of Fahook's mercenaries, as well as some of my colleagues."
Patch looked around and saw the bodies of fellow assassins near some graves. The blood and brain matter coming out on both ends as shown the clown masks and joker masks, as well as the kind of bullet wounds that were shown.
"She's here," Patch said.
"Who?" Meeshaka said.
"Eve Adams," Patch said. "I'm going to tell you birds this once – watch yourselves. Do not underestimate her."
The twins had heard about Eve Adams. One of them shot her at the Sanderville Manor. When Fahook told them to kill her as well, they were surprised that she had survived the shot and the drop from the second floor. If only the two knew how she had survived.
Patch, on the other hand, had chances to finally put the end to Jack Slate. He was not going to let this one slip, nor was he going to let it slip to finally end Eve Adams.
Jack looked around. Many clowns and jokers had their weapons drawn. Now that some of their comrades had been dropped, some of them looked around in confusion from where the sniper could be. Jack popped out from behind a headstone with his assault rifle.
BUDDAH! BUDDAH! BUDDAH! BUDDAH! BUDDAH!
Blood spurted out as the bodies dropped. Jack knew that he had to take out Patch. If Mayor Pinnacle informed Jack on how Hennessey set him up to take the fall as Patch killed Blatz, then it was likely that he didn't need the information anymore, unless it was for confirmation. But if Patch was here to kill Jack, it was a great time to settle the score.
Jack dropped four men. It was likely that there were more on their way.
"Shadow?" Jack yelled. In response, a bark was heard. "There you are, boy. Come on, we got to move."
Jack and Shadow sat behind a statue at the center of the graveyard as gunfire continued to go off. Sounds came from the phone. Jack checked and noticed that the call was still going on.
"Eve, are you still there?" Jack said.
"Jack, you and your dog should get out of there," Eve said. "I'll cover you."
"Not if Patch is here, I need to take care of him first," Jack said.
"Not if I get to him first," Eve said.
"Listen, no time for this right now," Jack said. "Tell me where you are. More of those Mayhem Inc. assholes are on my ass and I will likely be full of led and if I try to take them head on."
"I am over at the top of a church, north of where you are."
Jack looked up and saw a building that was a distance away. It wasn't directly north, but rather northwest. Nonetheless, through the darkness, Jack sensed that Eve set up a vantage point on the balcony of the church's exterior. Jack peered behind him. More of Mayhem Inc. went on the prowl. Jack popped out and shot at any assassin that closed in on him.
"Come on, boy, we need to get out of here," Jack said.
Crazy to think that Eve would be sniping from a church. I almost wonder if this woman was a guardian angel of some sort and that going to the church would be my sanctuary.
Shadow ran as fast as he could. The church was not too far from where they were. Jack was stuck between confronting Patch once and for all or going to safety. It was possible that Eve had extra hardware that he could use. For one second, he did not expect Mayhem Inc. to try track him down at the Peaceful Shores Cemetery. Someone must have either tipped him off, or Patch must have some skills when hunting his targets.
It was not long until Shadow approached the steps to the church at the end of the cemetery. Jack followed him there.
"There they are, they're going into the church!" A voice was heard. Jack turned around and fired a few shots. A couple of assassins dropped, but not in the sense that they were killed, but rather dropped to avoid the gunfire. Jack quickly opened the front door and let Shadow in first. As soon as the dog entered the church, Jack turned around to get one last look at the two assassins. Both of them had gotten to their feet, weapons drawn, ready to open fire. Even if Jack entered and closed the door shut, would there have been enough time to avoid the gunfire going through the door?
BANG! BANG!
The two assassins dropped like flies. Jack looked outside the door and the bodies were laid out with blood draining out of their heads. Eve had the two in her sights.
From above, Eve looked through her scope. She had a night vision scope. One thing that stood out in her line of sight was a van rolling down the street. She looked away from her scope and thought that there was something familiar about that van.
Jack wasted no time in looking for any stairwells that led to the upstairs part of the church where extra pews were. There was a door that led to the outside and saw someone looking through a scope on a rifle.
"Eve." Jack said.
Eve looked up and saw Jack and Shadow coming to the outside. "Jack, you're here."
"Yeah, and thanks for covering me."
"No problem."
Jack looked outward into the rest of the cemetery. "How did you know I would be here?"
"I got word that Patch was hired for a contract," Eve said and peeked through her scope once again. "Patch has his ways of finding his targets."
"Well, let's go take care of him," Jack said.
"I thought you'd never ask," Eve said.
Eve looked through her scope again. The scope had night vision. It was dark out. She needed some of her special toys to work with. Although she could not make out what the people looked like, the first thing she noticed was someone picking up a rocket launcher and what looked like two women, considering their build through their silhouettes. One of the two women stood with right arm going upward, like she held something to her face. In a second, Eve noticed that the woman put her right arm down and from the looks of things, it looked like the woman in question held a pair of binoculars. At that moment, the man held up the RPG launcher.
"Oh, fuck!" Eve said. "Get inside, NOW!"
Jack rushed to the door to the upstairs of the church. Shadow rushed inside first. Eve stormed inside, while Jack followed suit. Shadow ran down the stairs to get lower, while Jack and Eve quickly dove as far as they could.
BOOM!
A big flash went off from the blast. The walls, the door, and rubble broke and fell all over the place, as did some pews that were close enough to the outside balcony. Jack held onto Eve, who happened to fall on her back. She opened her eyes and noticed that Jack was on top of her.
"Holy shit," Eve said. "Jack?"
Jack opened his eyes and saw that Eve looked him directly in the eye. Jack turned around, while Eve looked to her right. A big hole was now present, with a lot of damage to that part of the church.
Jack looked up. God, please forgive us. He thought. He wasn't the most religious man out there, but after spending a lot of time with the Preacher in prison, who also happened to be Chris's father, sometimes Jack needed to rely on faith when necessary. It was like what he told the Preacher – "faith, padre, faith." Add to that he had killed some people recently, but most of the kills he made were in self-defense and/or "kill or be killed" situations.
"What should we do now?" Eve said as she lied there. Jack let out his hand to help her get to her feet.
"We handle this ourselves whatever we can," Jack said. "Come on, let's go find Patch."
Before Jack and Eve approached the stairwell, Eve said, "Jack, wait."
"What?" Jack said.
Without hesitation, Eve leaned in and delivered a kiss to Jack's lips. As soon as Eve backed away, Jack shot her a confused look.
"What was that for?" Jack said.
"I just wanted to wish you good luck," Eve said.
Jack nodded his head and then leaned in and gave her a kiss. In that moment, Eve had wrapped both of her arms around Jack, giving into the feeling of passion she felt in that moment, as there was some attraction on both ends. Despite Jack not being open about his attraction to Eve at first, he felt the passion as well. The two then backed away from each other.
"I wanted to wish you good luck as well," Jack said.
"Let's finish this," Eve said.
Meanwhile, over near the street, Patch walked alongside Meeshaka and Shadraka through some gravesites towards the church.
"Do you think we got them?" Meeshaka said.
"Are they dead?" Shadraka said.
Patch didn't answer. Through the one eye he had, all he could see was the blast. Something told him that the blast didn't take out Jack and Eve.
"I don't think so," Patch said and looked around. "Stand back, ladies."
Patch got out a transceiver that he had and spoke into it. "Bring it in, now, chaps."
A van was seen driving up the street heading towards the church. By the time it got closer, the van made a U-turn and then backed towards to the front of the church. A couple of Mayhem Inc. thugs, this time not wearing masks, walked towards the rear doors of the van. Once they opened the doors, a turret gun popped out.
From the inside of his jacket, Patch pulled out a remote control.
"Watch the artist at work," Patch said.
Inside the church, Jack and Eve got the first floor. Suddenly, Shadow ran towards Jack and barked at him.
"What is it, boy?" Jack said.
Eve then remembered seeing the van from before. "JACK, WAIT! GET DOWN!"
Eve then dropped behind one of the pews. Jack dropped to the floor and suddenly…
BUDDAH! BUDDAH! BUDDAH! BUDDAH! BUDDAH! BUDDAH! BUDDAH!
"What the hell is going out there?" Jack yelled.
"Mayhem Inc. brought their special van," Eve said.
"Their what?" Jack said.
Eve lied on the ground and looked towards Jack. "I'm telling you right now. You open that door, you will get pumped full of so much lead that your body will get blown apart. I'm serious."
Bullets flew through the walls and front door of the church as the light glared into the interior. There was no telling whether or not Patch would set off the mini-gun. He would have to know that the weapon did its job in taking out Jack and Eve. But Jack and Eve lied there to avoid being shot.
When Jack looked over at Eve, he noticed that Eve remained calm despite what was happening. Though Jack had not known Eve for too long, the two shared some qualities that each other had possessed. Both had similar motivations. Both were skilled at combat, although Jack had not seen Eve engage in hand-to-hand combat, but something told him that she excelled in that department as well.
One question on Jack's mind was how long this round of bullets would spray into the building. Those types of guns would hold a lot of rounds, but they weren't without limits. It was only a matter of time until the bullets would run out.
Several minutes had passed. The gunfire had stopped. The silence prompted both of them to get up. Much to Jack's surprise, Shadow did not get hit as he hid under one of the pews. Eve signaled to Jack to check his ammunition.
"Eve, but-," Jack said, only to be quickly told to be quiet by Eve letting out a quick "shhhh!"
Eve had put her rifle on her back with her strap. She then reached inside her jacket and pulled out her silenced pistol. Jack pulled out his guns. The only extra ammo he had was for the pistols he carried.
Eve quickly walked towards one side of the now broken front door. Jack went to the opposite side. Jack signaled to Shadow to crawl into the center aisle of the church.
The doors slowly opened. Three unmasked assassins slowly walked through the entrance. All that was seen were broken walls and pews. A lot of the destruction was at the hands of Mayhem Inc.
"What the fuck? Where are the bodies?" one assassin said.
"Shit, you'd think that those bullets would've laid out those two," another assassin said. "There should be blood and shit everywhere."
The second and third assassin followed the main one. The silence matched the darkness in the building. The three looked around, while Jack and Eve looked at each other. Jack pointed at the one on the right. Eve pointed at the one on the left that was following the main assassin.
As the three killers slowly searched the area, a growl caught them off guard, followed by a bark.
"What the fuck? Is there a fucking dog in here?" the main assassin said. "I would have thought the bullets would have taken down the dog, too."
Shadow slowly crawled. The very little light that came from the outside through the open door let Shadow see the three intruders. Jack slowly crept behind one assassin, while Eve crept behind the other. Shadow slowly crawled towards the main hitman who led the other two.
The main assassin whistled in the way someone would whistle for a dog to come forth. "Come on, boy, I got a treat for you."
Shadow was now in the main assassin's sights.
That's a good boy," the main assassin said, as he slowly guided his AK to point at Shadow. But Shadow had other ideas, as he quickly pounced right to the main assassin.
"What the fuck?!" the main assassin yelled. The speed and force from Shadow was enough to send the main assassin flying to the ground.
Jack rushed the man on the right, causing him to turn around as Jack grabbed a hold of the man's M4 rifle and aimed right to the man's head.
BANG! The man dropped.
Meanwhile, Eve rushed towards the man on the left, grabbed his rifle, and took him down and then pointed at the downed man. But the downed man quickly grabbed the magazine from the rifle and smiled smugly at Eve. But Eve smiled back at the man as she pulled back the ejection port cover of the rifle, revealing that there was a bullet in the chamber. Eve shook her head with a cocky smile while giving him the "Tsk! Tsk! Tsk!" remark. The man had a look of "oh shit" on his face before Eve pulled the trigger, sending the bullet to the man's head. Eve then picked up the magazine and attached it to the rifle and cocked it. She was ready to use it.
The only one was still alive was the main assassin, who still had Shadow on him.
"Get this fucking dog off of me!" the main assassin said. Jack and Eve approached the man. Jack signaled Shadow to get off the man.
"Oh, thank you," the assassin said.
"Don't thank me for shit, you're lucky Shadow didn't kill you," Jack said as he looked down to the floor. "Just one question – Is Patch out there?"
"What the fuck do you care? You two are as good as dead," the assassin said.
"Not as dead as you will be," Eve said as she pointed the rifle to his head.
The assassin laughed. "Eve fucking Adams, you're supposed to be dead."
"I don't die so easily," Eve said. "Where is Patch?"
"Patch is going to kill you, at least if those twins don't get to you first," the assassin said.
"We'll do with those two later, we want Patch," Jack said. "Answer my fucking question. Where is Patch? And how many more of those clowns are out there?"
The assassin lied there in silence and then laughed. Jack noticed one area of the man's body that had a wound from where Shadow bit him. Shadow bit the man in various areas, on his legs, arms, shoulders, as well as close to his groin. Jack stepped on the man's quad muscle, where the wound was.
"OWWWWW! FUCK!" the man yelled.
"I won't ask you again, where…is…Patch?" Jack said. The pauses between the words showed that he meant business.
"Patch is outside," the assassin said. "And there are only a few clowns left. But if Patch doesn't kill you, those twins will."
Jack and Eve then looked at each other.
"That's all I needed to know," Jack said. "Thank you."
The two started to walk away, but the assassin slowly reached for what appeared to be a sidearm he had as he squirmed from the pain he received after being bit by Shadow. He slowly got his upper body up, grunted at the pain he felt as he struggled to get up a bit, and pointed his pistol at Jack.
Eve went to a stop, as did Jack, who looked at her with minor confusion. Eve quickly turned around and pumped a few bullets into the injured assassin, finally putting him down for good.
Eve turned her attention to Jack. "You go find Patch, but don't kill him just yet. I want to take him out, too. I'll handle the rest of the clowns."
"You got it," Jack said.
Jack and Eve split up. Shadow followed Jack where he went. The only thing Jack wanted was to bring down Patch, but he also knew that Eve wanted to do the same thing.
Jack and Shadow looked around the cemetery to see if there was any sign of Patch. Jack knew what this man was capable of. If Patch was able to get into Augie Blatz's condo, as well as escape the place before the police arrived, it showed that this man was highly skilled at his craft. Jack had served in the Marines and learned some skills in his time in the service. It was only a matter of time of who would find the other first.
Meanwhile, Eve held onto the AK that she took from that assassin.
"There's Eve Adams! Kill her!" A male voice yelled. Eve looked towards the direction that someone yelled out her name. Eve quickly aimed towards the few clown assassins that went her way and were about to open fire on her. But Eve beat them to it as she quickly dropped those assassins without breaking much of a sweat.
However, after she was done, an assassin slowing stalked behind her with a knife in hand. In just a matter of seconds, the assassin grabbed Eve by the collar of her red jacket and wrapped his left arm around her, reaching for her neck. Eve wasn't certain if the man was going to try to stab her or slice her open. It could go either way or both ways. Eve noticed that the blade closed in toward her neck. Eve moved her head as far away as she could from the assailant. The man's arm was still wrapped around her. She opened her mouth and bit the man's left forearm.
"OWWW! SHIT!" The man released her. The blade dropped to the ground. Eve quickly turned around. Eve delivered a hard right hand and then a left hand, before she jumped up and delivered a hard spin kick. Although Eve was smaller, her speed advantage was enough to lay some attacks and had enough strength to put the hurt on the man. To top it off, she picked up the knife from the ground and pierced the blade right into the man's larynx and turned it clockwise. Blood oozed out of the man's neck. But Eve picked up the rifle and went on the hunt for any other assassins on the prowl.
BOOM!
Eve jumped. A blast went off near a grave, close to where she stood. A couple of semi-automatic gunshots came towards her as well. She ducked near a tombstone. She put down the assault rifle and switched over to her sniper rifle, the same one with the night-vision scope. She looked through the scope and silhouettes of woman with short hair and wielding weapons were present. Through the scope, she noticed one of the women reloading a weapon of some sort. The explosion appeared to be from an M79 grenade launcher.
"Bingo," Eve said to herself. She let out a shot, but it appeared to hit a tombstone that one of the women stood behind. Those women were the twins.
As soon as Shadraka reloaded her grenade launcher, she fired towards Eve's direction once again, but missed. However, it was on the opposite side of where the previous blast was. Eve peeked through the scope. It appeared that the twins were low on ammo and ran off to go get some more.
I don't have time for this. I got shit to take care of. Eve thought. She put her rifle behind her and decided to go handle other matters.
Meanwhile, Jack and Shadow searched around the cemetery some more. They were in an area with little light from a few light-poles that were present.
BANG!
A single shot caught Jack's attention.
BANG!
Another shot caused him to duck. The type of gun did not seem like a semi-automatic, but rather toggle-locked and recoil-operated. It seemed like it came a Luger.
"Patch, come out! Let's finish this!" Jack said.
"I am impressed, chap," Patch said. The posh British accent caused Jack to tremble in his veins. It was the same voice he heard that night in Blatz's penthouse condo. Those nights he encountered Patch at Dock 765, at the Sanderville Manor, and at the mayoral debate between Gloria Exner and William Pinnacle, Jack knew he had Patch in his sights, but there was always something that got in the way.
"I am impressed at how you and Ms. Adams managed to survive my clown van," Patch said.
"It's more than luck," Jack said. "I got you where I want you now."
"And now I have my chance to fulfill my latest piece of art," Patch said as he attempted to reloaded his gun.
"You should have killed me those nights," Jack said.
"Au contraire, Slate, it's not as if I didn't want to," Patch said. "But I am an artist and a professional. If the price is right and some exceptions are made, I see them through. And now, I have my chance."
"Yeah, and you needed a fucking van with a goddamn turret to take me out at first, along with your clown flunkies," Jack said.
"Correct, but that doesn't mean that I had to rely on them to my dirty work," Patch said. "But I figured that you and Ms. Adams would be able to outlast them. But I have my target in my sights."
"You know, I have waited for this moment myself," Jack said. "But let's handle this a different way."
Jack pulled back on the hammer of his handgun and pulled the slide to let the bullet out of the chamber. He also threw the rifle to the ground.
"How do you people say this? Let's handle this like gentlemen?" Jack said. "Yeah, let's handle this like gentlemen."
Patch smirked in response. He threw his pistol to the ground as well. "I have heard about your skills, Mr. Slate. Do not disappoint me."
Jack threw the first punch and the second. Patch dodged and blocked the other punch and delivered a hard elbow to Jack's gut. Patch then delivered a hard takedown to the ground and kicked him hard in the gut.
"I expected more, Slate," Patch said.
"Try harder," Jack said and swept his leg to trip Patch to the ground. Jack mounted him and started to throw a few punches, only for Patch to block and gripped Jack by his jaw and shoved him off of him.
Once Patch got to his feet, he quickly rushed towards Jack and took him to the ground and attacked Jack as well. Both men had bruises and some blood coming out of their mouths, but the adrenaline was high in the moment that they had some unresolved issues that they needed to solve. Patch pulled Jack's head up and then butted his head against Jack's.
Jack's field of vision blurred. It was like things around him flew and spun in the air. That blow to the head made him dizzy. But Jack realized that there may have been a weakness to Patch.
"Hey, Patch, haven't you heard the saying an 'eye for an eye…'?" Jack said and quickly guided his right thumb to Patch's lone eye, which was his left eye.
"AHHHHHH!" Patch yelled. He got off of Jack and lied on the ground on his right side.
"'…Makes the world blind,'" Jack said, finishing his line as he got to his feet. He stood there and watched as Patch ached in pain from getting his eye gouged. When Patch moved his hand away from his eye, the blurred vision barely made out that Jack stood right before him. Without warning, Jack delivered a hard roundhouse kick to Patch's head, knocking him down.
"You're welcome to fall at anytime," Jack said. Those were the exact same words that Patch said to Jack that night at Augie Blatz's place when he shot Jack.
After a few seconds, Patch took a deep breath and put his hands to the ground to help him get up.
"You and I need to have a talk, Patch," Jack said. "I want to know one thing. How much did Dick Hennessey pay for you to kill Augie Blatz and set me up?"
The cat was now out of the bag. Patch knew that Jack knew who set him up.
"Why does it matter to you?" Patch said.
"Because I know Hennessey has his ways," Jack said. "He must have paid you top dollar to set up this elaborate scheme for me to go to prison and get executed. I know cops don't make a lot of money, but Hennessey, he must have had a lot of money to pay you, and I know you don't just work for less."
"He paid me $40,000 to keep you still-life," Patch said. "Like I told you that night, it wasn't my choice not to kill you, but your former superior officer wanted you still alive."
"Oh yeah? Then how much did Hennessey pay you to finally kill me?" Jack said with a glare in his eye as he squatted before Patch.
"It doesn't matter, I know you got what you wanted, in regards to knowing what happened that night," Patch said. "Just finish me off. You've waited for this moment, remember?"
"Not yet." A female voice caught both men's attentions as Jack saw Eve walked up, brandishing her pistol. She had her finger away from the trigger, showing some discipline as she didn't want the gun to go off accidentally.
"Ms. Adams, what a pleasant surprise," Patch said with so much sarcasm that it bordered on condescension.
"Cut the bullshit, Patch," Eve said. "I know you killed my brother. I've been looking for you for a while."
"Both of you should shoot me now," Patch said. "Your brother, he was just business. I was only the artist to paint the portrait. Who you really want is the man who wanted the piece done."
The way this man talked, it was as if he spoke in code to go along with his methods of being a "designer killer."
"Remember, you used to work for my organization," Patch said. "I know the skills you possess. I know you well, Eve."
"So you do, but that's not important," Eve said.
"You should have seen your brother," Patch said. "I had him tied up. The more I cut him up, the more he screamed. I guess I put too much paint on my portrait, because when I worked my craft, he was dead before he could say anything else."
A look of rage rose on Eve's face. "You fucking monster!"
She quickly drew her HK pistol and pointed right towards his good eye.
"Go ahead, shoot me, that's what you wanted, I'm right here," Patch said in a taunting fashion.
Jack grabbed Eve and whispered to her. "He's trying to get under your skin."
"But that's what he did, he tortured my brother to death," Eve said as a tear started to slowly drop from her eye.
Patch smiled in a smug and condescending fashion. "I knew you couldn't do it."
Eve turned around, looked down, like she was ready to cry because of Patch said. He reminded her of what happened to her brother, as she knew what Patch was capable of. This man was proficient in firearms, hand-to-hand combat, and also torture. If the price was right, he would do the honor in taking out his target. Eve slowly walked towards Jack, who then caught glimpse at what happened behind her. Patch pulled out a knife and removed the sheath and held the blade in a stabbing position.
"Eve, behind you!" Jack yelled as Patch was close to closing in on Eve's back. Jack reacted by pulling out another handgun that he had in his jacket.
BANG! BANG!
He fired two shots to Patch, but they landed on his shoulder and one on the chest, but it wasn't fatal. Jack and Eve walked towards Patch's bloody body, as he looked up at the two standing over him.
"Just finish me off," Patch said.
Eve took a deep breath, still feeling the emotion of what happened to her brother, as well as Patch getting under her skin like that moments before. There was only one thing she could say right then.
"Say good night, Patch."
Through Patch's left eye, all he saw was the barrel of Eve's gun, but Jack pointed his gun right to his head as well.
BANG! The two shot him in the head at the same time, putting an end to Patch once and for all.
"Come on, let's get out of here," Jack said.
"Take me home," Eve said.
"What about your car?" Jack said.
"I didn't take my car, I used a stolen car," Eve said. "Besides, I can't drive right now. I have too much on my mind."
"Okay, let's go," Jack said.
A few minutes later, the twins looked on. They found Patch's body, along with the bodies of Mayhem Inc. soldiers.
Meeshaka got on a phone and spoke into it in Arabic. ["Fahook, Patch is dead. Slate and Adams took him out."]
In response, on the other line, Fahook said, ["Are they both still there? If so, take them out."]
["They're gone, sir,"] Meeshaka said. ["I don't know where I could find them."]
At Warden Air Force Base, Fahook sat at the desk of his opulent office as he talked on the phone.
["Oh, don't worry about that, I'm looking at someone right now who might know where to find Jack Slate."]
Right before Fahook sat Ruby, who looked like she had bruises and shiners on her face, as well as open wounds around her jaw and nose. She was also gagged and had tears coming out of her eyes.
Sometime later, the Grant City Police Department went to investigate the massacre that occurred at the Peaceful Shores Cemetery. Hennessey looked around and saw the many bodies laid out, but the one that caught his attention the most was Patch's body.
"Shit, Slate, what the hell did you do?" Hennessey said.
Michelle and some fellow GAC members investigated the church and found the bodies of the assassins in there. It was then Michelle approached Hennessey.
"Sir, we couldn't find any sign that Slate or anybody else was here," Michelle said.
"I know he was here, I could feel it," Hennessey said. "That late night groundskeeper saw every fucking thing go down. I'm going to find him if it kills me."
Author's note: Damn, this was a tough one for me to do, but that's it for this one. There are some references to the 2002 game. I will list them off.
The van with the turret was actually the boss fight for the cemetery level in the original game. I thought it would be a good idea to include it.
The part when Patch was about to stab Eve was in the game but Eve was killed. As many of you have seen, in this version, Eve has lived through this story. I won't spoil as to what will happen, but I wanted to make a nod to that part, except Jack saved Eve from being killed.
Also, the name "Peaceful Shores Cemetery" was used in the Dead to Rights comic book. It appeared that it was the place where Jack's parents were buried because there was a scene when Palmer, along with the Sanderville Mob were at a funeral, along with Hennessey and some cops for another funeral, and Hildy went to deliver flowers to Jack's father's grave. It was either that or Black Hill Cemetery from Retribution, and I know I had made some references to Retribution as I used some elements from that version.
I also must note that the part when Eve dealt with the assassin who removed the magazine from the rifle was a reference to The Hunt (2020) when Betty Gilpin's character deals with a soldier who worked with the Elites. She grabbed the assault rifle, but the soldier detached the magazine but Betty Gilpin's character pulled the ejector port cover to show the bullet in the chamber.
I'm getting closer to the end, but I'm not going to rush it. Next up, Jack goes to look for some evidence that Hennessey has been holding. Stay tuned.
