Breaking In
I had received a call from Senator James Copeland. He had told me that a couple of dirty cops kidnapped Hildy and were taking her out to Warden Air Force Base, one of those places that had been shut by Congress and left moldering in the fog. It looked like Fahook was getting out of the country for a while until things cooled down. Fahook was going to take Hildy with him as part of his white slavery trade. I couldn't let that happen.
Eve and I made one stop along the way. We went back to her place. We were going to need serious firepower for this. Chances are Fahook has that place crawling with some of his men. We better come prepared.
I made a couple of calls. One to Robert Blanjov, who owed me after taking down his former employee carrying those guns. The other was to Chris, who had enlisted the services of Inness and other Grant City cops who weren't a part of GAC. I have a bad feeling about what I might come across.
Rain fell hard over the outskirts on this night. When Jack and Eve went to get the weapons, a rainstorm had commenced with so much rainfall pouring from the sky.
Jack had made a call to Hildy's brother Michael, who right away told him that she had been kidnapped. Jack told him that he already knew but it didn't matter how. He asked Michael for a favor, and that was to take care of Shadow. Jack felt that he didn't need Shadow for this mission. Michael agreed and met with him somewhere. Jack told him that he would get Hildy back.
On this rainy night, Jack and Eve made it to Warden Air Force Base. It was a decommissioned base in the outskirts of Grant City. It was a distance from Dock 765. This base was right next to the Grant City Bay. The duo went up a hill to scope out the place. Eve had brought her rifle with the special scope that could switch to infrared sighting when necessary. Jack brought a pair binoculars.
In Jack's eyes, he saw a bunch of guys roaming the front gate area with green slickers and yellow slickers wielding AK-47 rifles and SPAS-12 shotguns. Oddly enough, there were also large crates that were open, as well as lookout towers surrounding the area. Some of them contained large stacks of gold. Others had munitions in them. The front gate also had something to scan a card with, as well as an intercom.
"There must be a way to get in," Jack said.
"This shouldn't be too hard," Eve said.
In the darkness, a set of headlights glared along the country road, as well as taillights as the width of the vehicle gave Jack an idea on who it might have been. They weren't alone, either, as a couple of cars followed that van.
Looks like Blanjov came through. Jack thought. "I'm going in."
"Be careful," Eve said. "I'll cover you. I'll find my way in. Don't worry about me."
Eve signaled to Jack to speak into their earpieces and looked into her sight.
Jack ran down the hill. He had a couple of pistols on him, as well as an MP5 that Eve provided. Things were about to get messy soon.
When he saw a gate that one could walk through, Jack ran right for it. Much to his surprise, any scanners had been removed. On top of that, the gate was slightly open. Jack turned around and saw that the driver in the main vehicle of the caravan had yelled into the speaker, demanding that they go in because they said that they had something important to discuss with Fahook about some weapons. Surprisingly enough, they were all let in. Jack then entered the premises.
Jack quickly pressed his back against one of the large crates. Two men in green raincoats were talking.
"Hey, did you see that one girl those cops brought in?" one of them said. "She looks familiar."
"Yeah, I think I've seen her before," the other said.
"Yeah, she is hot!" the first one said.
The other guy said, "Tell me about it, you should see on her stage."
Sounds like Hildy hasn't been here for too long. Jack thought. He knew that they meant her if they had seen her stage when she was a stripper.
Jack looked around the vicinity. There were two ways to go about this. One would be to shoot up the place, but that would draw some unwanted attention. Who knew if Fahook had more support at the base? It didn't matter if Eve and/or the Russians were Jack's support, Jack would be outgunned. The other option would be to play it smart and sneak around.
With his back against the wall of one of the crates, Jack peered from behind a corner. In Jack's case, the attentions' of the guards gave him the vibe that they would rather be elsewhere than guarding a bunch of gold and weapons. He noticed a couple of gates to outside that general area. He quickly ran to one end near a gate. However, the gate appeared to go down a flight of wooden stares alongside a cliff. Even in the darkness, some of the lighting implied that the cliff went alongside the ocean.
Don't need to go there. Jack thought but then glanced towards another gate. The one that drew his attention looked as if there was a special way of entering, like maybe a code or a keycard was necessary. Jack rushed right behind another crate. One mercenary in a yellow raincoat went up to that gate in particular.
Maybe I should try getting one of those bananas to speak into the mic. Jack thought.
A mercenary turned a corner and saw Jack. "Hey, you!"
Jack quickly turned towards that merc's direction. "Shit!"
The mercenary drew his rifle, but Jack rushed and tackled the mercenary as he gripped the weapon and pulled it away from his grasp. Right when the merc dropped to the ground, Jack pointed the gun to him and fired away, putting him down for good.
"I heard some shots!" A mercenary said.
Some of the mercs and assassins headed towards Jack. One person approached him from the opposite end. Jack aimed and opened fire.
BUDDAH! BUDDAH! BUDDAH!
Jack peered over around that corner with an open door to that crate. He quickly dropped a couple of other mercs, but then saw that more were coming his way.
"Oh, fuck," Jack said to himself and pushed the button to his earpiece. "Eve!"
"I got you, Jack," Eve said.
Eve looked through the scope and saw that two mercenaries were ready to flank Jack from the other end.
BANG! BANG!
One mercenary dropped as a bullet took a chunk off the merc's head with blood and brain matter splattering on the ground and the crate, as well as tissue from the head. The other took it through his back but went out through his chest.
"Oh shit, we got a fucking sniper!" a merc said.
Some of the mercs and assassins ran for cover. They had no idea where those gunshots came from. It could have been from anywhere.
"Eve, I know a way in," Jack said. "Don't shoot more of the yellow guys."
"You got it, hotshot," Eve said into her earpiece.
Jack ran right out and fired at more of the mercs who went his way. It didn't take long for the AK to run out of bullets. No matter, though, as Jack drew one of his Berettas. He still had the MP5 if he needed to get a little messy. There weren't many mercenaries in that area. When Jack saw a guy in a yellow raincoat, he rushed right to him and pressed his Beretta towards the man's back.
"You're coming with me," Jack said as he grabbed the man in a stranglehold and pressed the gun to his head like a human shield.
A couple of other mercs got close but then saw Jack holding their comrade as a human shield.
"You try anything funny and he gets it," Jack said, pressed the gun to the man's head. It was a good thing that Jack displayed some discipline as his right index finger was away from the trigger. He did not want to make any mistakes.
Jack pulled the mercenary towards the voice-activated gate.
"Time for a little karaoke, asshole," Jack said as he pushed the man's face towards the microphone.
"Unit one, one, seven, alpha, nine, two reporting," the mercenary said.
"Good job, thanks," Jack said and pistol-whipped him in the back of his head. Jack went right for the gate as it started to open.
Jack spoke into his earpiece. "Eve, I'm going in."
"Go ahead, I'll catch up to you," Eve said.
"How will you do that?" Jack said.
"Don't worry, I'll find my own way in," Eve said. "Now go find Hildy."
Jack wondered where to start in finding Hildy. Who knew if Fahook had the entire base occupied with his mercenaries? But if Fahook planned on leaving the country, then there was no reason for Jack to search the entire base.
Inside Fahook's office, among the ornate nature with Fahook's opulent decorations of a bookshelf, a few statues, and a mirror between the windows, there were a few people in there overlooking the rainfall spraying the windows. Fahook looked outside in awe, as if he was going to miss ruling the city for a little bit, but as far as he was concerned, Grant City was his now that Sanderville was dead, with Blatz also being dead. But with there having been other problems involving one Jack Slate, he needed to get out of the country for a bit. Besides, Fahook had ties to another mobster who could hold down the fort in the time of his absence.
Fahook stood there with the twins standing on the other end of the office, and Ruby stood in front of Fahook with the twins behind her.
Fahook took a look at Hildy, who looked away with her face being pale and a chill running through her veins. She knew if she tried anything stupid, Fahook could have one of the twins shoot her, or maybe Fahook could do it himself. Hildy then took a glance at Ruby's face, with there being some scratches and bruises on it.
"Ah, you will be good for my operation," Fahook said and gave Hildy an evil and creepy smile.
He got close to her and started running his hand down Hildy's face and her body a bit.
"Very nice," Fahook said.
The vibe Hildy got from this man was unsettling, if she didn't already feel that way from that night at the docks. If that wasn't bad enough, the twins were armed.
Ruby said, "Okay, okay, you got her now. Now may I go? Where's my money?"
Fahook turned his attention towards Ruby. "Oh, right." He said it in such a way like it wasn't a big deal.
He pulled out a couple of gold ingots and set them on his desk. "There."
"Is that my payment?" Ruby said. "I sort of expected cash."
"Ah, yes," Fahook said. "Unfortunately, my cash assets have been redirected to my homeland, but this should more than suffice."
"Uh, yeah, but a bar of gold won't help pay bills or rent," Ruby said.
Hildy sat there and looked at Ruby all puzzled. She couldn't just exchange the gold for money? What an idiot. Hildy thought. She figured that this woman dropped out of high school.
"True, true," Fahook then chuckled. "Then perhaps I should just…keep it."
Hildy looked up and saw one of the twins pull out a gun and walked towards Ruby and was ready to point it to the back of her head. Even though Hildy didn't like Ruby, she knew that that this young woman got herself too deep in this life and did not fit with these kinds of criminals. She looked like she wanted to help Ruby, but if she did, the other twin could shoot her as well.
BUZZ! BUZZ! A little buzzing sound interrupted the moment as the intercom on Fahook's desk signaled to him. Fahook signaled to Shadraka to put down her gun, unbeknownst to Ruby, who had the gun pointed to the back of her head.
"Yes?" Fahook said.
"Boss, we have some problems," the voice said on the speaker. "He's here."
"Who?" Fahook said.
"Jack Slate, along with some Asian broad in a red jacket," the voice said.
"Red jacket?" Fahook said. "Eve Adams? Her, too?"
Hildy looked up with her eyes widened and jaw dropped, but one side of her mouth looked she start to smile in relief. She didn't want to make her relief too obvious, but Ruby had a look of shock, while Meeshaka and Shadraka looked at each other with confusion.
Fahook took a deep breath. "Okay, find them and bring them to me! Jack Slate is one man. Eve Adams is one woman. Let our other men deal with the Russians."
Fahook took a look at his CCTV feeds and saw Jack on one of the screens.
"Jack Slate, come on, you coward!" Fahook said towards the screen. "Find me!"
Fahook looked at Ruby and Hildy. "You ladies stay here. I'm going to play a little game with Jack Slate."
Fahook and the twins left the room so that they could talk while the two women stayed behind.
Ruby went and sat in a chair while Hildy sat in hers. Hildy turned to look at Ruby. She looked at her face once again. The bruises looked fresh enough that it had been recent when she had been beaten.
"What are you really trying to do, Ruby?" Hildy said. "What are you after?"
"What's it to you?" Ruby said as she looked at Hildy with an annoyed glare.
"I heard you tried to kill Jack, and I think you had something to do with me getting kidnapped," Hildy said. "What do you really want?"
"I just want to start over," Ruby said. "If you ever lived a life as fucked up as mine, you would do the same shit."
"So you would kill someone you love in order to survive?" Hildy said.
"And you wouldn't?" Ruby said.
Hildy looked at Ruby with such disgust, but it wasn't as if she didn't have a point.
"Come on, you really think that Fahook gives a fuck about you?" Hildy said. "Do you really think he's going to let you live?"
"What's that supposed to mean?" Ruby said.
"Nothing, forget it," Hildy said. "You know Jack cared about you."
"I loved Jack, but if you've ever been in half of the shit that I went through, you would understand why I do the shit that I do," Ruby said. "We all do things to survive."
Hildy looked at her with more disgust than before. Although Ruby had a point, something had told her that Fahook was done with Ruby in some way, if one of the twins having a gun to her head was any indication.
"Yeah, I bet Fahook cared enough that he beat you up, or maybe it was the twins," Hildy said.
"Hey, shut the fuck up!" Ruby said. "You don't know shit!"
"Believe me, I do," Hildy said. "You should have just taken your money and gotten out of here while you had the chance."
Ruby's eyes shifted towards Hildy and took a deep breath. She knew that Hildy was right about everything. Deep down Ruby never wanted to hurt Jack, but after everything had happened, she found herself too deep into this life and was in over her head. She took another deep breath and pulled out her wallet and looked at a photo of a little blonde girl who was about 4 or 5 years old with a young blonde woman, who looked to be in the range of 21 to 24. The woman held the child with so much embrace. Ruby looked down with so much sadness and shame as to what she had gone through as she thought to herself, "I'm sorry, Mom."
After Jack had searched various areas of the base, the last place he looked had him come to a complete stop as he looked up at what was in front of him. It looked to be a Boeing 747 jet on the runway. It didn't seem like it was ready for take-off, but chances were good that Fahook was on that plane, and so was Hildy.
"Jack!" A female voice drew Jack's attention and looked around until he saw Eve.
"Wow, that was fast," Jack said.
"Never underestimate me, Jack," Eve said. "You should know that by now."
Eve saw the plane, too. "You think they're in there?"
"Only one way to find out, come on," Jack said.
The two ran towards the airstrip and saw a stair truck with a man standing next to it smoking a cigarette.
"We need this right now," Jack said.
"Sorry, I can't let you do that," the man said. "Fahook will kill me."
Jack pulled out a pistol and pointed it to his face. "Not if I kill you first."
"Okay, okay, just give me a minute," the man said and put out his cigarette.
Jack saw that the door to the plane was open. It was only a matter of time until Fahook was about to board the plane and leave the country. The man got into the truck as Jack and Eve rode on the steps. They gripped the railings hard as any turn they made, they tilted a bit. When the truck got level with the door, the driver went to a stop and Jack had used the controls for the stairs to extend at the level of the plane's door. The duo wasted no time in getting on the plane.
The first thing they saw once they got on were two thugs just hanging out waiting until it was time to take off.
"This is taking so fucking long," one thug said. "I'm ready to get the fuck out of here."
"Yeah, but the boss has some 'important shit' to deal with," the other thug said.
The first thug said, "Yeah, I hear you, but…" He then turned around. "What the fuck?"
Both men quickly reached for their weapons, but Jack wasted little time in unloading a few rounds from the MP5 that he had.
Somewhere down other halls of the plane, a voice said, "What the hell was that?" and another said, "Go check it out."
Eve drew a SPAS-12 shotgun that she had picked up along the way. The two bodies were laid out near what few seats there were on this plane. For a plane this big, it was odd to see that there were only a few seats in this section. However, with there being two aisles and two doors, Eve rushed towards the opposite side of one door, while Jack did the same towards the other. They would be behind each respective door when it opened.
The door opened on Jack's side and out walked a thug. He jumped at the sight of the two bodies.
"Holy shit!" the thug said.
But Jack gripped his weapon and slammed the butt of the MP5 to the back of his head. The door on Eve's side opened and that thug saw Jack standing there before the thug who was on the floor.
"Hey, asshole!" the other thug said and reached for his weapon, until he felt something cold and made of steel press against his back in the same range of his chest.
"Ah, ah, ah, I don't think so," Eve said as she had her shotgun pressed to the man's back.
"Please, you don't have to do this," the thug said to Eve.
"You leave me little choice," Eve said.
"I have a family, I'm only doing this to support them," the thug said.
"I've heard that one before," Eve said.
"I'm not lying to you," the thug said. "Let me show you."
As the man reached for his back pocket, Eve made eye contact with Jack. Eve signaled to him to see if what the thug was reaching for, but Jack noticed through his peripheral version that the other thug reached for his gun. Jack kicked the weapon away from him.
"Don't even try, asshole," Jack said.
The other thug pulled out his wallet and showed a photo of himself along with a wife along with a little girl. Eve looked up directly into the man's eye.
"Get out of here, get out of this life, and be a good husband and father," Eve said.
The man just ran out of there after Eve said that. Meanwhile, the one who Jack down reached somewhere. Jack saw it and aimed his MP5 to his face.
"Hold it right there," Jack said. "I don't want to have to do this, so you're going to do something for me. Where can I find her?"
Jack pulled out that poster with that picture of Hildy. The man looked at it.
"I don't know, I've never seen her bef-," the man said until he felt the muzzle of the MP5 press against his chest.
"Okay, I think I saw her in the cargo hold," the man said. "She was being loaded into some crate."
"Thank you," Jack said and then pistol-whipped the guy in the face with the butt of the gun. "Let's go, Eve."
The two went through the plane. They had to race all the way to the back. Along the way, they found that because this plane had all this space, they came across a room with a table, likely used for meetings/meals, as well as a bar, and also a room with a hot tub, and some rooms with bedding. It was clear that Fahook was a man of expensive taste.
A couple of guards were seen patrolling near the door to the back.
"Hey, assholes!" Eve yelled.
It drew the attentions of both men. Jack sprayed five bullets to the chest of one of the guards as five holes rose on his chest and his back with spraying out and getting on the wall. Eve fired a buckshot from her shotgun that laid out of multiple holes on the other guard's chest, and a bloody mess, too.
"Smokin', baby!" Eve said.
Jack smiled at that remark. "Come on, she's got to be here."
He wasted no time in opening the door. A few guards were present. There were also stacks of gold bars. It was without question that Fahook worked with Mayor Pinnacle on this gold operation, but there had to be more to it, especially if Fahook was taking this heavy cargo out of the country. This wasn't even getting into the large crate and a sedan that was in the cargo hold as well.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" A guard said.
The guard fired a few bullets but Jack and Eve quickly behind the walls.
"Hello? Can anyone hear me?" A female voice was heard through the walls of the large crate.
Jack peered from his corner with the MP5. He knew that there were only so many bullets he could use. Eve took out her Uzi that she held in her bag that she had on her. Eve quickly fired from her SMG as Jack opened fire to the other guard, as they both dropped them like flies.
Eve and Jack jumped the railings to get down to the floor where the crate was.
"Hello? Hello?" the voice said.
A chain and a padlock were what kept this crate locked. Jack pulled out a pistol and fired a bullet to the chain. The chain slid and fell to the floor. Both Jack and Eve pulled the doors open and saw some women in there.
"No, no, don't shoot!" one woman said.
"It's okay, ladies, we'll get you out of here and back to your families," Jack said. "But I need to ask one of you something."
Jack got the poster out and showed it to them. "Have you seen this lady?"
The women all look at each other like they didn't know how to answer this question, until one said, "I saw her."
"Where is she?" Jack said.
"I don't know," the woman said. "I saw her being taken by those twins and this big scary guy with tattoos."
"Fahook's got her," Jack said to Eve.
"What do we do?" Eve said.
"I don't know," Jack said.
"Well, well, well." An accented voice drew the attentions of everyone in the cargo hold. It was a tall and muscular man of Afro-Caribbean descent with a blond man-bun.
"Looks like you and that lady have been busy," Rafshoon said with a pistol in his hand.
Both Jack and Eve had high-powered weapons, more powerful than what Rafshoon wielded in that moment.
"I don't have time for this," Jack said and pointed his MP5, and Eve pointed her Uzi. "Ladies, back in the crate. You don't want to be in the middle of this."
Jack turned his attention back towards Rafshoon. "Okay, asshole, I'm only going to ask you once, and you better answer because I don't want to have to kill you, and remember that I kicked your ass before. Where…the fuck…is Hildy?"
Eve pointed her gun at Rafshoon. "Don't waste his time, and don't even think about shooting him or I will shoot you myself."
"You really think I'm scared of you?" Rafshoon said.
"Try me, asshole," Jack said and fired three shots away from Rafshoon as he jumped. "I won't miss next time."
Rafshoon breathed and trembled at what had just happened. "Okay, wanker, Hildy is in Fahook's office inside the plane hangar.
"Thank you, now was that so hard?" Jack said in such a smart-alecky tone and then pistol-whipped him in the face.
Jack then saw a rope then tied Rafshoon to something so that he wouldn't try to escape. He then got his phone and called Chris.
"Hey, man, are you guys on your way?" Jack said.
"Yeah, we're just about here," Chris said.
"Good, we have some women here who were about to be shipped off to Babylon, some were probably juiced up," Jack said.
"Got it, we're almost there," Chris said.
"All right, we'll see you in a bit," Jack said.
Jack then opened up the cargo hatch as the ladies followed him and Eve. It wasn't long until some police cars rolled up. Chris and Inness walked up to Jack.
"Thank God, you're here," Jack said.
"Jack, what did you find?" Inness said.
The crowd of ladies walked down the ramp onto the runway.
"These ladies were about to be shipped off," Jack said.
"Damn," Inness said. "It's okay, ladies. We will get you out of here."
Jack said. "Chris, you help the rest of the team. Eve and I have something to do."
"You got it, call me when you need some help," Chris said.
"I will," Jack said.
Jack and Eve raced towards the hangar of the airfield. Hildy had to be close. Jack had hoped that Fahook didn't kill her already. But there was only one way to find out.
Meanwhile, from up above, a GCPD helicopter hovered around the base. Through a pair of binoculars, Hennessey saw some squad cars with blue and red lights flashing. He then saw Jack and Eve racing towards the hangar.
"Well, Jack Slate, looks like this has become a surprise party," Hennessey said.
Author's note: I wanted to make a reference to Fahook's plane from the original game. This was the only way I could do it because I didn't want to do a bit where Jack gets onto the plane. Although I will note that the way he did it in the game was so ridiculous that it was funny.
When Eve said "Smokin', baby," that was a callback to in the game when you would kill one of the bosses in the Black Orchid level and she would say that.
Also, as some of you had noticed, I used the negative traits from Hildy in the original game for my version of Ruby. I also had to make a little gag about Hildy's thoughts with Ruby arguing about being paid in gold, because that was what she complained about in the original game. I will get to more details about this soon.
I will get onto the next part soon.
