NOTE: Regarding who to pair Ben with, I'm going to leave it ambiguous in the Ken 10 episode. Considering that I forgot to include the P5 girls (Not Makoto) into the options as a partner for Ben. I really just wanted to see how people felt about it.
He's also still 10 years old. He has more than enough time before he starts thinking of a romantic partner.
Also, only one person wanted to consider Kai as an option. So, she's just out all together as an option.
Review and Enjoy!
Chapter 28: Heroes' Promise
"So, let me get this straight," Yu and the Tennysons sat inside of the Rustbucket. Yukiko and her family had just finished explaining everything up to that point to the Wild Card. Yu pointed his finger directly at Ben.
"He found that watch, which is called the Omnitrix, from a meteor. However, that meteor turned out to be a pod that was sent down to Earth in hopes of protecting it from this alien tyrant named Vilgax."
"Yes," Yukiko nodded her head.
"Said watch can transform him into 10 aliens-"
"11 and counting!" Ben exclaimed, proudly.
"Right. He transformed into Heatblast and almost burned down a forest."
"Not my proudest moment," Ben interjected.
"You have proud moments?" Gwen looked up at him, in her hands was Charmcaster's book. Ben stuck out his tongue at her in response.
Yu turned his attention to Yukiko. "Then you awoke your Persona when Ben was being attacked by these drones that were sent by Vilgax."
Yukiko nodded her head. "Yes, and I've been meaning to ask you about that. You were able to summon Izanagi and other Personas with no issue. I figured I was going to have to explain to you that we could use our Personas outside of the TV World, but you already knew. How?"
Yu rubbed the back of his head. "I always knew that we could summon our Personas outside of it."
The heiress was shocked, not too sure on how to feel about Yu keeping that from them. "And you didn't think to tell us? Or me?" She was starting to understand how Gwen felt about all the secrets. Yukiko felt Yu gently hold her hand, his thumb brushing the back of it gently.
"I didn't mean to keep any secrets from you guys. It's just that I didn't think any of you needed to know, I figured it all out by accident one night after we left the TV World. Nanako-chan was busy watching her show and Uncle was working late," Yu felt the memory returning.
Yu entered the home of his Uncle, exhausted from the prior events that transpired. He and the team had made good progress through Kanji's dungeon, but they still weren't close enough to his location.
"Welcome home, Big Bro!"
Looking up, he found Nanako sitting in front of the TV watching her favorite quiz show. The little bean of sunshine was smiling at him. That look on her face instantly brightened his mood, seemingly giving him a small boost of energy. "Hey, Nanako-chan." Gazing around the small home, he noticed that someone was missing. "Uncle, still isn't home?"
Nanako shook her head. "No, he said that he'd be working late again tonight." Her mood dropped a bit after thinking of her dad again.
Cursing himself for bringing up his workaholic uncle, Yu hurried over to Nanako. "Hey, don't worry Nanako-chan! How about I cook dinner tonight and we play a game together?"
The mention of playing a game with her big bro cheered her up for the moment. "Yeah! Let's play a guessing game! Like, the quiz show!" Nanako pointed at the TV.
"Alright, I'm all for it!" Yu smiled. The Wild Card loved the bright smile on Nanako's face, he could only wish that it would be a permanent look.
After eating dinner, playing with Nanako, and putting her to bed; Yu sat on the couch in his room. His silver orbs staring directly at the TV in front of him, his mind occupied by the sound of rain outside of his window. "We still have time…there's no fog tonight."
Staring down at his hand, Yu opened and closed it. He found it strange how quickly he had managed to accept the concept of Personas, another side of you that you were unaware of. It was exhilarating to summon Izanagi for the first time, as if for the first time in his life he had finally taken a breath of air.
That's when something quickly struck his mind.
What if he could…?
But, this wasn't the TV World. Igor and Margaret had told him that this was a special power that only those who have accepted themselves can achieve.
But they never said it was impossible to summon outside of the TV…
"Per…so…na…"
His hand was eclipsed in a bright light.
"And that's basically it," Yu finished his tale.
"But that doesn't explain why you didn't tell us afterwards," Yukiko said.
"At first, I was going to tell you guys, but then another thought struck me. If we could summon our Personas outside of the TV, then wouldn't it be possible to use their attacks?" Yu responded.
"I get it," Max understood. "You feared that if the others noticed then they might be reckless with them."
"Like, a certain doofus I know," Gwen glanced at Ben.
The boy took offense. "Hey! I'm not reckless!"
Deadpan stares were aimed at him.
Ben pouted, crossing his arms. "I'm not that reckless…"
Yukiko shook her head at Ben's adorable pouting. She turned her attention back to her lover. "You didn't trust us enough to tell us?"
"It's not that I didn't trust you guys, but I didn't want to risk the chance of anyone making a mistake while on high emotions. Like when Nanako…"
"I get it," Yukiko softly cuts him off. Their hands tightened the grip between them. Both teens were silent for a moment, confusing the Tennysons.
"Is everything alright?" Gwen asked.
Both Persona users were brought right back to reality. "A-ah! Yeah, we're just fine, Gwen!" Yukiko exclaimed.
"Yeah, we should probably get back to the conversation." Yu shifted his gaze to Max. "You were a space police officer?"
"We were called the Plumbers. Intergalactic Space Force," Max answered.
"And you had battled with this Vilgax tyrant beforehand?" Yu continued.
"Yes, I had figured he was dead for good. But I underestimated just how tenacious Vilgax is and his return caught me off guard. I never would've thought about going to Mt. Rushmore if it wasn't for Ben's dreams," Max said.
Ben puffed out his chest. "Yup, without me the day wouldn't have been saved!"
"He's really full of himself, isn't he?" Yu chuckled.
"Oh, you haven't seen the worst of it," Gwen sighed.
"But Ben did defeat Vilgax back in South Dakota. Not even my strongest spell was able to damage him," Yukiko said.
The Wild Card was baffled to hear this. "Burning Petals didn't faze him?" Considering the fact that Burning Petals had gotten the Team out of a lot of messes in the past, Yu couldn't believe that Yukiko couldn't deal damage to an opponent.
Yukiko nodded her head. "Sadly, Vilgax was too strong physically."
"Yeah, not a single one of my forms were able to take the creep. He managed to crack Diamondhead! And Diamondhead is one of my toughest guys!" Ben exclaimed.
Yu went deep into thought after hearing their talk about Vilgax, a sense of worry building up inside of him. "I was in South Dakota when this happened. I even saw the news reports of large explosions rocking through Rapid City and the extensive damage done to the Black Hills. The reporters and law enforcement had no idea what had caused all of that damage. Well, I guess I do now.." Yu stared right at Yukiko.
"You could've died, and I wouldn't have known what happened…" He realized.
The pain in his voice made her chest tighten. "It wouldn't have been your fault-"
"But I should've been there. I was in South Dakota when Vilgax came after you guys. If I had known you were there and that you were in trouble…nothing would've stopped me from saving you," Yu said. Yukiko carefully pressed her forehead against his in an attempt to calm him down.
Her action seemed to have worked for the moment. "Don't blame yourself for something you don't have control over. Everything is fine, I'm still here. We're perfectly fine, I promise."
Yu chuckled softly. "We're still doing promises?"
"Of course,' Yukiko huffed softly. "You haven't forgotten our most important promise, have you?"
"Nope. It's permanently engraved into my soul, just like my love for you," Yu smiled.
"Good, that makes me feel a lot better-"
"BARF!"
…
…
…
Coal black and silver orbs slowly turn to the 10-year-old boy who was making gagging motions. They weren't the only ones, since Gwen and Max were glaring down at Ben.
Ben was absolutely disgusted by the lovey dovey air that the teenagers were producing. He wasn't bothered at all by everyone's anger. "Can we please move past all the lovey dovey garbage!?"
"Way to kill the mood, doofus!" Gwen yelled.
"What!? It was suffocating in here with them getting all kissy kissy!"
"Kissy kissy!?" Both teenagers blushed heavily.
"Just because you're too stupid to understand true love doesn't mean you should ruin it for other people!" Gwen pushed a finger into his chest.
Ben rolled his eyes. "Blah blah blah! Love is for losers anyway. That's why I'll never fall in love," Ben said, confident.
Gwen scoffed. "Oh yeah, I'll be sure to remember that. Don't expect me to not rub it in your face the moment you get a crush!"
"You won't. Because it won't happen."
Yu looked at his girlfriend. "They…are nothing like Nanako-chan," He smiled.
Yukiko sighed, smiling, nonetheless. "No, no they are not. But, I wouldn't have them any other way."
Max looked outside the window and noticed the sun going down. "I think it's about time we got you back to your hotel room. Wouldn't be good to make your folks worry," He said to Yu.
"Ah, I appreciate it," Yu said. "I wouldn't want to hold you guys up on your summer road trip and all."
Yukiko looked at her grandfather. "Grandpa, would it be alright if we stayed in Vegas for one more day? I-I mean it's up to you of course…but…" Yukiko's face was red from her request.
Max smiled and shook his head. "I'd be fine with staying one more day here. You guys haven't seen each other in a while, so tomorrow you'll have the whole day together."
Yukiko's face brightened up at the acceptance of her request. "Oh, thank you, Grandpa!" Yukiko wrapped him up in a hug.
"No problem, sweetheart," Max returned the hug.
Yu found the scene cute, happy that Yukiko is happy with her family. "Hey, Yu." The teen turned his attention to Ben.
"Hm? You need something, Ben?" Yu asked.
"You know all about Personas and stuff, right?" Ben asked.
"I'd like to think that I know a good amount about them, yeah," He answered.
Ben sat up straight in his seat, looking completely serious. "Why is it that Yukiko's Persona is naked?"
"BEN!" Yukiko screeched, face turning red in an instant. She thought she had gotten him to stop bringing that up!
"Oh! That's pretty easy to answer. It's because-"
"DON'T JUST ANSWER HIM!"
Next Day(Late Afternoon)
"I wish we didn't have to say goodbye." Yukiko had her arms wrapped around Yu's neck, and his around her waist.
"It's not a goodbye, we'll see each other again before the summer ends," Yu responded.
"How can you know that?" Yukiko asked.
"Well, we met up here in Vegas, right? Then, we almost encountered each other in South Dakota. Fate wants us to stay together, so I know we'll meet up," Yu answered.
Yukiko hummed sweetly, agreeing with his theory. "Fate, huh? I remember when fate wanted us dead."
"And we defied it. Meaning that we'll always be together. That's what we promised, right?" Yu reached into his shirt. Pulling out a necklace with a small silver ring attached to it.
Yukiko smiled at the sight of it, revealing her own necklace that was hidden in her dress. "Yes, our greatest promise."
Yu looked back into her eyes. "Stay safe, okay? If anything happens that seems like you guys can't take on alone, just call me. No matter how far away I may be, I'll always come to help you."
"I promise," Yukiko and Yu sealed the promise with a kiss. The two ignored Ben's gagging noise in the background, then giggling when they heard Gwen smacking him in the head.
The teens broke their hug, Yukiko was about to say another goodbye until she remembered something. "Oh, that's right! I still have some of yesterday's dinner leftover! I'll go pack some up for you to take with you!"
Some color drained from Yu's face instantly. "I-I don't think that's necessary, Yukiko-"
"Nonsense! What kind of girlfriend would I be if I didn't give you a goodbye present?" Yukiko hurried into the RV to pack the meal.
The Wild Card trembled; he had a feeling that Yukiko still wasn't over the events of today. In a way this was his karma…
"Welp seems you're in trouble," Ben cackled, walking over to him.
Yu rolled his eyes. "It's fine, it makes her happy to see us eating her food."
"Yeah, at the risk of our own health," Ben shuddered.
"It's worth it. Seeing her smile like that will always make the pain worth it," Yu said.
Ben thought about that then turned his sights back to the RV. "Hm, I guess. I always get this weird fuzzy feeling whenever Yukiko is happy."
"That's called love, Ben."
The boy looked at him with disgust.
"Not like that!" Yu yelled at him.
"Oh."
"I meant love in the sense of familial in your case. Making her happy causes you to feel good, that's love, Ben," Yu explained.
"...And if I make her unhappy?"
"Then you'll feel hurt, because you've managed to let her down. Something I've always tried to avoid."
"I've already managed to let her down once," Ben thought back to New York. Hurting Yukiko and making her cry had hurt him a lot more than he would've thought it would. Sometimes he could still feel the pain of her slap on his face.
"Hey, Ben."
"Huh?" Ben was dragged out of his thoughts, noticing that Yu was now kneeling down in front of him.
"Could you promise me something?" Yu requested.
"Uh? Sure?" Ben shrugged.
"Promise me that you'll protect Yukiko for me, alright?"
Ben was confused. "Yukiko is strong enough to protect herself. Heck, she's saved my butt multiple times."
"I know that, Ben. Trust me, I've seen her roast a ton of Shadows into unrecognizable piles of ash. But that will not stop me from worrying about her and hearing about all of the dangers you guys have encountered this summer has made my worry grow. I won't be there to have her back, but you will, Ben," Yu explained. The teen raised up his fist for a fist bump to solidify the promise.
Ben stared at the fist for a moment, feeling the immense weight that this promise carries. A part of him was unsure if he'd be capable of keeping such a promise, especially with how close some of their previous battles had been.
But he was a hero. And heroes always win.
If he couldn't even protect his family, then he couldn't call himself a hero.
Ben's smaller fist met Yu's bigger one, the boy giving a wide smile. "Ben Tennyson gives you his word! I'll keep everyone safe!"
Yu's smile was just as wide as Ben's. "Then it's a promise! A promise between heroes!"
"Yu-kun! Ben!"
The two turned around to see Yukiko running out of the RV with a wrapped bowl in her hand. A sickly purple aura was coming from the item in her hands. "I have the food ready!"
Yu's felt his stomach's uneasiness. "T-that's great…" He looked to Ben for help, but the boy was already walking away.
"Sorry, you're on your own for this one," Ben laughed, darkly.
Chapter End
NOTE: The events that happened on that extra day will be revealed in The Tennyson Priestess Logs.
1. I probably should've said this beforehand. If you don't know the story of P4...there will be major spoilers. Hell, Secrets already spoiled the entire game, and the summary even spoils it. If you do know the story of P4, then you should know what they were referring to about the event that happened to Nanako.
2. The rings that Yu and Yukiko have will be explained in a one-shot, that I'm still planning out. Back in Persona 11 chapter, Yukiko was holding something small. That ring was the small object that was keeping her calm, so that she wouldn't explode at Ben for his stupid actions.
3. Yu will return next season.
4. There wasn't much focus on Gwen with the spell book in this chapter. The next update in The Tennyson Priestess Log and the next chapter will have more of her learning how to use it.
