Previously…
I locked my phone back, grabbed my charger from my bag, and plugged it in to charge my phone. Since I couldn't do anything more for my family in the hospital, I rolled over and tried to sleep my anxiety away.
The next morning, I woke up to a doorbell ringing once, twice, three times.
Coming out of a hazy dream, I slowly got out of bed, trudged over from my bedroom to the front door, laid my ear against the door to look into the peephole. Two shadows crept onto the small view. I could barely see a suitcase on the corner beside them.
"Who is it?" I asked, after clearing my throat of the grogginess.
"It's Leah and Sam," Sam's voice called out, and I unlocked and opened the door. Both of them stepped over the threshold of the foyer with their suitcases. Leah gave me the longest hug first.
"I'm so glad you're okay," I whispered. "I literally thought the worst last night."
Leah tearfully chuckled in my ear as she rocked me back and forth. "Me too. I was so worried about you, too, and Mom."
"How is she? Why isn't she back with you guys?" I asked as she let go, and I went over to hug Sam.
"She was getting her arm re-bandaged when we left. She said the hospital would provide an Uber for her, since our car was destroyed. She said we should meet you here and not wait any longer to see you," Leah answered. Sam walked her over to the couch in the living room and they both sat down. I couldn't take my eyes off of them as I slowly walked around the living room table and down into the loveseat next to them.
Leah had a few cuts above her right eye and cheek. A few black and blue bruises showed on the tan skin of her forearms. I could see her long fingernails stained with blood as she held her growing stomach. Last I remembered, she was at least 7 months far along.
Sam didn't look that much better. He had dark hair and eyes, and was Indigenous just like Leah. At least for his muscular build and tall frame, he could pull off his scratches and bruises on his arms and legs. But it still hurt to see the lines of his face deepen more as he rubbed Leah's pregnant belly.
Tears welled in my eyes as I reached over to pat her pregnant belly. "How is she?" I asked gently.
Leah smiled tiredly. "The doctor said the blast of the accident didn't hit her because of the airbag, thank God. But they still kept me overnight just in case. They ran a few tests, and they all came back negative. Personally, I think she'll still show up early, but we'll see. I'm just glad she's still…..alive, after…." She looked away to Sam, who held her close and kissed the top of her head.
"After what?" I asked, gripping Leah's hand.
"We had been trying for a baby for almost a year now, and we had gotten pregnant before, but the last little one didn't make it." Sam's voice spoke in a deep tone, laced with sadness and grief.
My God, how much had I missed? "Oh my God, Leah I'm so sorry!"
"It's okay, Bells," Leah sniffled, adding, "At least if this little one had left last night, she would have another sibling to play with in Heaven."
"But the baby's still here. She'll come soon, won't she?" I asked.
"After this whole baby shower stuff is out of the way, I'll probably be back home on bedrest, because even coming back here for a weekend is too much!" Leah cried a humorless laugh.
I came off of the loveseat to plop next to Leah and lay my head on her other shoulder. I placed my hand on top of theirs on top of Leah's stomach, feeling the baby kick through my hand. Leah and Sam smiled as I gasped at the feeling. "Awww she's kicking me!"
"She wants to meet her auntie real soon," Leah teased, and yawned.
"I'm just glad you all are safe." I rubbed her belly in circular motions as my sister fell asleep in Sam's arms.
A/N: I had this chapter stored up in my files when I thought I didn't have anything to write. Welcome back lol!
