Chapter 2
"Ms. Haruno what would you say Kohana needs to do?" Shisui asked holding onto his sister hand while she was sleeping. Sakura had given her some medicine to let her sleep through the trip until they get back to the leaf village. This was to help bust Kohana's immune system and help her to gather her chakra again.
"Kohana is suffering from chakra drainage along with a bad infection in her back, the first thing is that…" Sakura said before Kakashi cut her off by clearing his throat.
"Sakura don't say anything else until we know for sure that this really is Shisui Uchiha." Kakashi said stepping closer to the man and sleeping girl until an iron sand chain lashed out at him. Shisui squeezed the sleeping girl's hand which made the sand return to the girl, before holding out his paperwork that Kohana had made sure he had since that day.
"Leaf village paper work, a copy of my application to become a shinobi and my birth record. Since than only three have knew about me surviving that fall, the third Hokage, Kohana and Itachi. Now it's a lot more people and I might be able to finally return to my home with my brothers and little sister." Shisui said watching the girl roll over towards him. Showing the others her back, which was red and inflamed.
"It's the real thing, we've sent word ahead to the fifth Hokage. But do you have anything to prove your story, other than the word of Naruto and Kohana." Kakashi said sitting down across from the blind man. Shisui reached into the bag that Kohana made for him and pulled out the packet of paperwork with all the proof about what really happened with the Uchiha clan. And held it out the man that he once knew as an older cousin's friend and team mate.
"Kakashi Hatake the copy cat ninja team mate to my older cousin Obito Uchiha, who once dreamed of being Hokage. Obito gave you one of his sharingan on his last mission, he died protecting you and your other team mate. I taught both Kohana and Naruto what it means to stand up for someone in need, to help those in need. Itachi tried to teach Sasuke but that nevered worked and I must say that I am very ashamed of how he been acting since than. I should of never let the Uchiha massacre happen, than he might still be here with us instead of with that damned snake; as Kohana like to call Orochimaru." Shisui said petting the girl's head as she slept, Kohana had this habit of sleeping like a cat when ever she did sleep.
"When Kohana and Naruto were seven the landlord at the building that they stayed at kicked them out in the middle of winter. As you know winter's in the land of fire are mild but if you remembered that winter had been harsher than normal. I find them in the park living out of a cardboard box…" Kakashi said looking at the scar that Kohana had on her lower back from a kunai she took while protecting Naruto from a mob of villagers.
"When was this. October or November?" Shisui asked leaning forward in his chair.
"It has to be around October; knowing Kohana she might be able to tell you better. She has a better memory when it comes to remembering dates and data. Naruto is better at traps and planning. Sakura at remembering information that is either written or seen. Sasuke was better at offense and Defense. I would have had the perfect offensive battle squad if the third Hokage hadn't sent Kohana back to the Sand village. Sorry Sakura but you would have been better on an informational or medical squad rather than an offensive squad."Kakashi said changing the subject from that date.
"It was October 7th. Right before Naruto's 8th birthday." Kohana said rolling back onto her back, before going back to sleep. Shisui looked mad before calming down and looking down at the sleeping girl.
"It was before we meet you and Itachi, Shisui. And if you had stopped the massacre than something much worst might have happened, cout de ta would have been horrible. All the adults would have been killed by the shadow unit, and than all teens under 17 and young children would have been out casted by the villager. You and Itachi would have been spared because you were only have been following the orders of your parents and elders." Naruto said coming into the room with Kankuro and Temari right behind him.
"How do you know that Naruto?" Temari asked only hearing the stories of the Shadow unit from the two sand users when they never slept and were sitting out on the roof of their home talking. Naruto pulled out a pack from under his jack before tossing the mask on top to Kakashi. Everyone in the leaf village knew that a black Anbu mask meant only one thing, a shadow unit member.
"There has only ever been three shadow unit members known as Fox for all five of the Hokage. Every one was both a Uzumaki and the jinchūriki. The first was Mito Uzumaki, the second was my mother Kushina Uzumaki, the third is me. Kohana is the same way. DOIS which stands for demon of the iron sand; four for five Kazekage. I don't know all of their names but I do know that it mostly through Kohana's family. I do know that the last three were Kohana's paternal grandmother who married into the Fujio clan. The one after her was her oldest son Ayato Fujio, who was also Kohana's father. This generation is the girl right in front of you. Kakashi you probable heard of what happens to the children of jinchūriki. Sakura let me fill you in you already know how people treat those that are jinchūriki, what you don't know is that Kohana and many more children were treated the same way as me and sometimes even worst. Kohana before coming to the leaf village was treated worst than I ever was. The orphanage never feed her or bathed her. She lived in clothing that were more rags than clothes. She never really spoke about it seeing as she was often ashamed of the fact that she couldn't protect her self from the stares of others. When she came to the leaf it was the best day to her, because it was the first day that she got to wear a pretty dress, eat good food and go to bed in a nice warm clean bed." Naruto said looking at the sleeping girl. She had a thin layer of dirt and blood covering her whole body, which lines up with the report that Kohana had given to Gaara.
"Naruto what do you and the other members plan to do?" Shisui asked the blond boy as the boy reached for his anbu mask on Kakashi's lap, Shisui knew what the youngest two had been through during their training to become the shadow unit captain and vice captain. But he had never seen Naruto pull out his mask for something like this.
"The others have no part of this. I'm going after the Fujio clan by myself because they made Kohana do a lot of things that she would never do normally. And when she refused to do what they said she was tortured by the elders." Naruto said changing out his normal loud orange jacket for a pure black one.
"Naruto don't do anything dangerous…" Sakura said before Shisui stood up and let his chakra spread out around him. This allowed Shisui to see everything around him and let him know what was going on, the only down side is that if something didn't have chakra he wouldn't be able to sense it and this often lead to his tripping over items.
"Please Ms Haruno do not worry because Naruto isn't going alone. I might not have my sight anymore but that doesn't change the fact that I am a leaf shinobi and also an older brother to this kid." Shisui said petting the sleeping child, who quickly grabbed onto the older man coat sleeve. That proved to the two older brothers that she was wide awake.
"Please don't do this. They are really strong, the elders alone can take me down. I can't lose anymore of my family…" Kohana said crying before Sakura gave her more medicine to make her sleep.
"Come back soon, I don't know how long she will be asleep. So go quickly." Sakura said as Naruto and Shisui left. That night was very bad, Kohana came down with a very bad fever and by the morning the two hadn't come back yet and Sakura was worried that Kohana wouldn't make it. It wasn't until late afternoon when Naruto and Shisui returned to find that Kohana was hanging on by a thread. And they couldn't move the girl until her fever broke. But after three days they had to move as the Hokage wanted them to come back to the village. They had to risk Kohana getting worst but than she remembered that if Might Guy and Rock Lee pushed themselves they might be able to get her to the leaf in half the time. But that was only if they could make it. But Might Guy had already taking off with Kakashi Sensei. And Lee was trying to get Neji to ride on his back. Sakura couldn't trust him to be careful with the ill child, in her arms.
"Lee not going to happen; how about you carry Kohana?" Neji said looking at the sick girl in Sakura's arms. Lee quickly changed his tone and the way he was wearing his back pack. To allow the child to be comfortable in his arms. But he knew that Sakura wouldn't let him go full speed with the deathly sick child, but he also knew that he needed to go at his top speed to get her back to the leaf before she got any worst.
"Lee go at full speed and get her to the leaf hospital as soon as you can." Sakura said before tying a bell around the child's wrist, before Lee took off. He didn't fully understand what the bell was for or who this child truly was, it wasn't until that night that he found out the answered for his questions.
"The bell had been so that Shisui could follow you anywhere you went. As for who she is that question belongs to Naruto." Sakura said untying the bell and checking on sick girl.
"Naruto who is this child too you?" Lee asked standing next to the blond boy.
"She's my baby sister. Her name is Kohana Hyuga- Fujio at birth but now she goes by Kohana Uzumaki- Uchiha. Kohana hates both of her parents clans because of how they treated her in the past. The Fujio clan which is… um… no longer a problem seeing as me and Shisui took care of them a few days ago. The Hyuga clan while if it was up to Kohana she would never talk to them. As it is she loves running away when ever Kohana is in the same room as Neji or any Hyuga clan members." Naruto explained to the black haired boy next to him. Or that was before the iron sand chains lashed out at those around Kohana. While beside Naruto, Neji, and Shisui that is. Shisui was the first one to reach her side and hold on to her tightly. Naruto could see that Kohana was either having a nightmare or starting to wake up, he wasn't sure until the screamed ripped past Kohana's chapped lips. Letting him know that she was having a horrible nightmare. Naruto hasn't seen Kohana like this since they were 7, and she had gotten sick from living outside in the cold winter. It was Mikoto Uchiha that saved them when they had no where to go, she took in her friends children without her husband knowing and put them in a nice apartment where they would be safe and sound. That's how they became family with Itachi and Shisui, Itachi often came over to visit the orphans with his mother. Mostly when she brought food for them after finding out that no one was allowing the children to buy food anywhere. She even started teaching the children to cook when the massacre happened. Sasuke thought that he was the only one that understood what it was like to lose those that you cared about, he never thought about what that did to Naruto and Kohana, who saw Mikoto Uchiha as the only mother that they knew. Shisui quickly get the girl to calm down and go back to sleep, by humming the old lullaby that Mikoto used to sing for Sasuke and Kohana when they couldn't sleep.
"Sleep, baby, sleep,
Oh, my baby, sleep,
How lovely, how lovely,
How nice you are!
Where's the nurse,
where's the girl?
Where's your nurse girl?
She's gone, She's gone,
Far across the hill!
As a souvenir from her hometown,
What did she give you?
A toy drum and
a small bamboo flute."
Shisui sang holding the fifteen year old just like an infant in his arms, rocking her softly. Her iron sand slowed to a stop before returning to her person. Kohana curled up in her brother's arm as if she was a cat. It was a sight Naruto hadn't seen since they were seven.
"She's out like a light. Sakura how is my sister doing?" Naruto said watching the sleeping girl.
"Kohana, still haves a fever and I'm worried that she still hasn't woken up. Quick question why doesn't her iron sand ever attack you?" Sakura said looking over the sleeping girl in Shisui's arms, she was too scared to move the sick girl, from her safe place.
"Kohana explained it to me once before that because I never could eat regular food as a young child, my body has never produced a large amounts of iron. Kohana's iron sand is attracted to iron with in a person's body. I knew with Shisui he's been surrounded with Kohana's chakra since we were eight. I have no idea about Neji, Kohana might know if she done pretending to be a sleep." Naruto said looking at the child. She rolled her head to the side before opening her eyes and pouting at the blond haired boy.
"Neji like some Hyuga clan members they don't produce a lot of iron in their blood. Gaara has had the iron sand charm on him since we were four years old, that also can protect you from my iron sand chains if your chakra matches mine own. For that you have to be a close relative, in mine and Neji's case my mother was his father younger sister." Kohana said sitting up in her brother lap. She knew that Shisui didn't mind that she was sitting in his lap like when she had been a young child. It didn't help that he was petting her hair as if she was an eight year old girl again, or that he pulled out the hair tie holding her long coppery brown hair out of her face and started to redo her hair as if she really was eight years old.
"Kohana do you have any more hair ties?" Shisui asked running his hand through her hair, as if to work out any knots that she might have. Kohana quickly pulled the hair tie out of her bag and handed it to her brother from over her shoulder.
"Over my left shoulder Shisui." Kohana said slumping her shoulders away from her brother. Until he reached into her bag and pulled out her hair brush at the same time as pulling her shoulders back to the straighten position she was in to begin with.
"How did you knew that my bag was on my left side?" Kohana asked her brother as he brushed her hair out and parted it to pull her hair into twin tails like when she had been a younger girl. Kohana often had her hair when she was younger pulled back in twin tails to keep her hair out of her face.
"High or low Kohana?" Shisui asked not even answering her question.
"A single high pony tail, please, like I had it." Kohana said slumping her shoulders.
"High or low twin tails?" Shisui asked again before Neji took my hair brush out of his hand, and handed it back to her. Kohana quickly pulled her hair ties from her brother's hands before pulling her hair back into her high pony tail.
"Shisui your blind so stop trying to do our sister's hair. Wait until we get one of your eyes back and you can see again before you try to do her hair like when she was a little girl." Naruto said sitting down next to them while Kohana search through her bag looking for some photos that the villager in the village where her mother and father where buried. The villagers had been looking out for Kohana's parent's house waiting for the day that she would come back and live there.
"Little flower what are you looking for?" Naruto asked the girl watching her search in her own bag for something.
"What did I tell you about in my last letter Naru?" Kohana asked not even looking up from her search. She finally found the pile of photos towards the back of her bag in one of her notebooks.
"Found them." Kohana said holding her pictures up in the air.
"The picture from your parents home." Naruto said taking the photos from her hand. She was used to her brothers doing this but the big smile on Naruto's face meant even more to her than any pictures. But when he keep staring at one picture everyone got worried, but Kohana knew which picture it was, because when she had been with the Fujio clan that one picture had been her life line.
"Naruto she sure is pretty right?" Kohana asked the boy, getting up to look over his shoulder at the three teenagers. Two girls and a boy, one of the girl had bright red hair the same color as a cherry tomato. The other had chocolate brown hair and pale blue eyes, the boy looked just like her but his eyes where more white like a normal byakugan.
"They both are. You have your mom's eyes." Naruto said looking up at her, with the same big emotional eyes as his mother.
"Hey Neji do you remember this guy?" Kohana asked taking the photo and handing it to her cousin. It only took one look at the photo to tell her he knew who the boy was. The look Naruto gave his sister spoke volumes about her question.
"That boy was Neji's father when he was our age. My uncle Hizashi Hyuga, the younger twin brother of the current head of the Hyuga clan Hiashi Hyuga. My mother's name was Hana Hyuga, she had a rare mutation of the byakugan known as the Blue opal, she skipped two grades to be in the same class as her older brothers. Both of them were friends with your mother Kushina Uzumaki." Kohana said sitting next to her brother and her cousin. Kohana went through a few more photos to find one of the three at her mother's wedding this time her father was with them, along with the fourth Hokage. And a baby in her mother's arms.
"Look at this one you two." Kohana said holding the photo out to the two boys.
"Wow is that your mother at her wedding. But who's that she's holding?" Naruto said taking the picture from my hand, careful not to rip it or anything.
"It's Neji, neither of us were born yet so it had to be Neji. But see this man standing next to my mother can you guess who that is?" Kohana said standing behind the two to look at the picture with them.
"That's your father, you look more like her than him, I don't know what either of them we're like but I can tell that they really loved each other and would be very proud of you Kohana." Naruto said smiling sadly at the fact that like him, both Kohana and Neji were orphans. Having lost both their parents that was before he caught sight of the bottom photo, it was an infant laying next to a dead woman's body. What gave the infant away was the birthmark on her nose.
"The first and last picture you had with your mom." Naruto said reaching for the picture only for Kohana to take it first, the tears in her eyes told him that she didn't want to talk about this picture at all, because it meant that she would have to talk about how she killed her own mother right after birth.
"Kohana is that true?" Sakura asked putting a hand on her shoulder. Kohana held the picture out to the girl before curling up next to her brother, clearly crying.
"My mother had a higher than normal blood iron level because of me, so the minute I took my first breath I killed my mom. Since I was born my iron sand has been hurting those around me. I kill everyone I've cared about since I was born." Kohana said gasping for breath through her tears. It surprised everyone around camp except for Naruto who knew that talking about Kohana's birth was a touchy subject. He understood that the day she was born was the day she became an orphan just like himself.
"Ms Haruno sometimes children are blamed for the death of a parent more than you might think. In Kohana's case it because of the nature of her iron sand that killed her mother because it's a protective measure to prevent anyone from hurting her. Kohana was blamed mostly by the Hyuga clan for the death on the only person to hold at that time the rare mutation known as the blue opal byakugan. They didn't know that Kohana also had the blue opal just like her mother." Shisui said wrapping his arms around the crying child. It was a known fact to Shisui who was also blamed for him mother's death, so he could understand what Kohana was going through. Everyone looked down at their feet when Shisui said this. Kakashi understood but he wasn't going to say anything to make everything worst for the child. She was already having a hard time, with have to keep her powers under control at all times. For if her powers were to run wild at all a lot of people would die because of her iron sand. But what mattered isn't the fact that she can't control her ability it's the fact that she has such a strong control that she can split her chakra in half and keep it around Shisui since she was eight years old.
