chapter 3
When Levi woke up the next morning, Eren was lying on his chest, sound asleep despite the hectic evening they had had just hours prior.
Levi looked down at his husband and a smile unconsciously formed on his lips. Gently, Levi moved Eren off of him and got up from the bed, not before giving Eren a kiss on the forehead. He took out a fresh uniform from the closet and went to the bathroom to take a shower and change.
Once he was well awake and showered, he went to check on Leo, who was sleeping on the other room. Or rather, was sleeping. He was already awake as Levi went to check on him, standing on his crib. When he saw Levi he started to try and talk, letting out garbled sounds as he made grabby hands at his father. He was a beautiful little thing, with fair skin and tufts of black hair like him, and those stunning green eyes he got from Eren.
"You're up already?" he asked with a gentle voice as he picked him up, looking at his son with nothing but love. "How about you and I have some breakfast? I'll fix us some right now and then we can go wake up your papa."
With his son in his arms, Levi went down the stairs and walked to the living room, being pleasantly surprised when he saw it had been cleaned up already. Not to his standards, but then again the only one that could really clean like he liked it besides himself was Eren.
The clean living room, plus the lack of a lump covered in blankets, made Levi know Hange was up, and he went to search for her. He unfortunately found her in the kitchen, trying to cook… something, for breakfast. At least she was ready to head to work, so he could just shoo her away from the stove before she set their entire house on fire.
"Hange!" he forcefully removed her, expertively passing Leo onto her so he wouldn't be exposed to the flames, and started to try and fix the mess of burnt eggs that was in the pan. "What the fuck are you doing now? If you're trying to cook breakfast, forget it. You can't cook for shit, just give it up,"
he sighed at the mess, leaving it for lost and taking it directly to the trash. "I'll cook something, you just keep Leo entertained. And try not to make too much noise, Eren is still sleeping."
Levi cleaned up the kitchen before he started cooking breakfast for the occupants of the house, keeping half an eye on Hange, who was playing with the baby in her arms.
"Oh, Levi?" she asked as he got more eggs to make some that wouldn't be burnt. "We do need to discuss what happened at the attack yesterday," Levi sighed. Of course he knew they had to talk about it, but thinking about that monkey always irritated him.
"Once I'm finish with breakfast, four eyes," he promised nonetheless, because as much of a friend that Hange was, she was also his Commander, and as such he had to report the attack to her. "I want Eren to rest today, so he can take care of Leo, and I'll be going with you today."
"I don't know, Levi. I think Eren is starting to get jealous. You're always with me, even if it is for work," Hanji put the baby in her lap and looked at him. She looked conflicted, her lower lip in between her teeth.
Levi considered her words. She was right, he had been spending an awful lot of time with her lately, that with Erwin's death and the sudden influx of new responsibilities that both he and Hange had to deal with now. They were the only veterans still alive in the Corps. Or well, now, he guessed the 104th squadron also counted as veterans.
But yes, Levi could see why that would make Eren jealous. His husband was a passionate person, and seeing him hanging around with other people all the time, especially after Leo was born, would set him off after a while.
There was nothing he could do about it, though, since he did have a lot more work than before, and now that Hange was Commander he had been bumped to Second in Command until she could find a more permanent replacement. Levi was a good soldier, great even, but he wasn't built to plan and give orders, he just made sure they were completed. Once Armin got more experience, he would probably be placed as Second in Command and Levi would finally get some more time to spend with Eren again.
Levi finished making the eggs, and after some quick work with the bread, breakfast was ready. He took his son from Hange's lap, seating down at the table across from her and placing Leo on his own lap so he could feed him his breakfast.
"Now, tell me what happened yesterday, and why Eren can't hear it," Hange looked serious all of a sudden, easily changing from her at-home mode to her work one.
"What did Yelena tell you at that meeting?" Levi somehow managed to look serious while feeding his baby from their shared plate.
"It's… well, it's bad, Levi. Yelena said she will do whatever she can to help Zeke, including taking Leo away. Zeke seems to think he needs him. He thinks he may be a natural born titan, since he is Eren's biological son. Males don't get pregnant, as you know. Eren is a special case, and that paired with the Ackerman genes you passed onto him, Leo is as threatening as they come, even if he's still a baby. Since the Ackerman bloodline can't be affected like most Subjects of Ymir, the fact that one could be a titan due to their genetical code is something Zeke isn't willing to risk. If he can't indoctrinate him, he will try to kill your son, Levi, and Yelena said she's more than willing to do it for him," she sighs, the mood in the room darkening as Levi held his child tighter, feeling both fear and rage at the thought of anything harming his beautiful, small child that had done nothing to the world except being born to two freaks of nature. "There's also the fact that Zeke can't stand Ackermans. They protected the King when he left for Paradis, and there's also you, who married his little brother and took him away from him. Yelena knows that, and is willing to do anything to please Zeke, so be careful."
"Tsk. Pathetic," Levi looked down to his son, smiling slightly as he fed him another bit of food. His son was adorable. "She can try, but she won't lay a finger on my kid."
"This is serious, Levi. I'm worried. I don't know if Leo will present with dominant Ackerman blood or if Eren's titan genes were passed on. I can't do anymore research on that.
"Don't worry about it. If we're lucky, he'll just get Ackerman blood and will never have to activate it, but either way, we'll find out in the future. There's nothing we can do about it right now, you said it yourself, so don't stress about it," he waved her off. He would never let Leo be in a position where he would have to activate his Ackerman blood, and in the end, finding if he had titan habilities would be fairly easy, if they worked like Eren's. "Is that all she told you?"
"Yes. I figured she was only a distraction so Zeke could make his attack," Levi thought so too, but he was glad Hange had reached that conclusion on her own.
"I wanted to tell you about it last night when we got home, but you fell asleep before I could. As you can guess, Eren and I didn't get to enjoy our date last night because the fucking furball interrupted us. Same as usual, attacked and tried to take Leo, made a fucking mess while he was at it," Levi took a bite off his food, expertly avoiding his son's grabby hands.
"Ah, so that's why you're trying to keep Eren and Leo here," Hange chuckled, but her expression was grim. "Good luck with that, Levi. You know Eren's not the type to stay indoors, especially when he knows there's things to be done."
In that moment, Leo started to cry. Levi frowned, thinking of what could be that upset his son, but Hange beat him to a conclusion
"I think he needs a change of diapers, Levi," she said while she comically covered her nose. After a moment, it became evident that she was right, and Levi sighed as he took Leo from his lap and stood up so he could change his diaper.
"Levi, why is Leo crying so loud?" Eren called out as he entered the kitchen dressed up in full uniform. He automatically gravitated towards his husband and child, kissing Leo's head and giving Levi a kiss on the cheek as he waved at Hange.
"Good morning, Eren. Leo needs a change of diapers, so Levi was going to get right on that when you came," Eren hummed understandably at Hange's words. "Why are you dressed on your uniform today? Are you coming with us?" Hange asked, somewhat nervously as she had just been talking with Levi about Eren not going to work that day. Levi kicked her leg as he passed by her on his way to the door. "Ouch! That hurt, you know?" he ignored her in favor of shifting his baby to a more comfortable position. "You two need to go to your room and make another baby."
Eren blushed at her murmured words, always the most shy in between the two, and Levi merely snorted.
"You asked for it, four eyes. I'll be right back," Levi said, lifting his son some to make his point. "Oh, and you're staying here with Leo today, Eren. Hange and I will leave for work," with that, Levi left the kitchen with his son in his arms. Of course, Eren made to start following.
"What are you talking about? Levi, I'm not staying here today, I'm heading out like I do every day," when he saw his husband was, in fact, ignoring him, he got mad. "You can't force me to stay home, Levi! You're not doing this to me!" he yelled out. Levi heard him, of course. He had grown attuned to even the mere whispers of his husband, but he kept going up the stairs with Leo in his arms.
Gently but firmly, Hange grabbed Eren's arm and redirected him to the table.
"Come seat down with me, Eren. Levi made some breakfast, why don't you eat some while he takes care of Leo and then you two can talk this out?" she handed him a plate, which Eren angrily looked at.
"Thanks, but I'm not hungry, Hange," Hange bit her lip as Eren stood up, ratling the plate and everything else on the table with the force he used. "Levi can't make me stay here just because he's scared. I'm leaving. Don't tell Levi I'm gone yet, there's some stuff I need to do and I don't need him chasing me around."
"And who's going to watch Leo? You always take him with you!" when Eren didn't listen to her, Hange squared her shoulders and made to stop him. "As your Commander, Eren, you are not allowed to leave today."
Eren turned around to look at her. His green eyes seemed to glow, looking somewhat of a poisonous green. He looked angry, and this time for real.
"I can do whatever I want, Hange, since I'm not on active duty anymore. Neither you or Levi have any control over me. It's time you all stop treating me like property," with that, Eren left out the front door, grabbing his horse and riding off before Hange could stop him.
Panicked, Hange yelled out to Levi as Eren left out the door.
"Levi! Eren just left and I have no idea where he's gone!" Hange ran upstairs to where Levi was. She found the man in the middle of changing Leo's diaper, though his face was turned to look at her, shock and fear coloring his face. Then, his face hardened.
"Dammit! He's only putting himself in danger like this!" he finished with Leo quickly and then grabbed him close to his chest, as if scared that he would leave too if Levi didn't hold him close. "He must have been listening in on us in the kitchen. We have to go look for him, before Zeke gets to him first."
"And what about Leo?!" Hange looked at the baby worryingly. "Eren usually takes him with him to work, but now that's obviously not an option."
"We can leave him with Mikasa, she loves to take care of him, and Armin is with her, they'll be fine," soon, Levi and Hange left the house in a hurry, Leo in Levi's arms, as they headed to meet the rest of Levi's team at headquarters.
In the meantime, Eren had arrived to Trost. It was a mess, the result of Zeke's attack the night before.
Eren had gotten a letter from Yelena a few days ago, asking him to meet up with her in Trost that day. Before the attack yesterday, Eren had considered not going, but the conversation between Levi and Hange, which they had purposely left him out of, had changed his mind.
The letter was a warning. If Eren didn't come, then his family would be killed. At first, Eren hadn't considered it a real possibility, hadn't thought it a threat, so he hadn't mentioned anything to Levi, thinking it silly. After all, who would even dare attack Humanity's Hope and Strongest? After the attack, though, he knew it was an actual threat, and that if he didn't comply, his family would be at risk.
Eren got off his horse, looking around him with narrowed eyes. His body was tense, waiting for an ambush. When he heard steps, he turned around, drawing his blades immediately.
He came face to face with Floch, who was flanked by two other soldiers. Part of the Survey Corps, too, if the badge in their uniforms said anything.
Before Eren could even feel betrayed - these were his comrades, why were they doing this? Even if he and Floch didn't get along all that well, there was a difference between butting heads during training and betraying him to Yelena and Zeke! - Floch smiled.
"You made it in time, Eren. Good. Follow us, Yelena wishes to speak with you," Floch then looked at him dead in the eye. "You are the only one that can save us, Eren. I have realized it, and I hope you do too."
"I'm not on active duty anymore, not since I had Leo. You know that, Floch," Eren looked at the two other soldiers with unease, but still started to follow, though his weapons were still drawn. "How did you know I would be here. Are you working for Yelena and my brother? I thought you of all people would know better than to trust the one that killed almost all of our soldiers," Eren said with cold eyes.
"I'm also working for you, Eren. You're Humanity's Hope," Floch smiled like nothing was wrong, before turning around and motioning him to follow. Like Eren wasn't a threat to him even with his blades out, like he knew he wasn't going to get hurt. "But enough of that. Follow me, and your questions will be answered," with that, he started walking, and after a final moment of hesitation, Eren followed after him, praying that his family would be safe with this.
I hope everyone like this chapter.
