Chloe wasn't sure what to think. Technically she hadn't seen Lucifer kill the guy. What she had seen was a human take one look at the Devil and wish for death. Even if Lucifer had been calling out for him to stop, even if the first words out of his mouth were "I couldn't stop him," Chloe just wasn't sure if she should blame Lucifer for this or not. Was he evil or, as he claimed, just the punisher of evil? Yes, the man who had just fallen to his death was a murderer, but did that mean it was okay?
"If I had my wings I could have stopped him!" Lucifer said next.
He seemed genuinely upset that the man was dead, but Chloe still had a funny feeling that it was something Lucifer had done that had pushed Renny over the edge.
"What happened?" Chloe asked. "Why did he jump?"
"He saw my wings," Lucifer said. "He sneaked a peek when his bosses weren't looking. When I showed him my face he figured out the wings were mine and became an apologetic mess, then he just- he jumped."
"Why did you show him your face?" Chloe asked.
"I was angry," Lucifer said in a small voice. "And it is often useful for getting information out of bad people."
"Is that what you did to the producer who killed your singer friend?" Chloe asked.
"The one who shot you? Yes, Detective," Lucifer said. "Seemed like a fitting punishment for such a person."
"That man is in a straight jacket 24/7 because he saw your face," Chloe said calmly. "And now I've just witnessed another man end his life for fear of you."
"As I've been saying all along, Detective, I am the Devil!" Lucifer said, his anger flaring up again. "Haven't you been listening?"
She had been listening, but she'd also been watching. Lucifer's behaviour made very little sense. He really was honest, and yet a mystery at the same time. The way he answered her questions was like he didn't know the answers himself. Lucifer cared more than he liked to admit to, and had saved her life twice. If he really was the Devil she had to see it, and if after all this she was right and there was some other explanation it would call his bluff.
"Show me then," Chloe said. "Show me your face."
"And risk you jumping off the roof as well," Lucifer scoffed. "No thanks."
"I won't jump off the roof," Chloe said, with a sigh. She had to resist rolling her eyes. That was not the worry here.
"This isn't some bluff you can call, Detective," Lucifer snapped back. "If I show you and you run-"
He didn't finish the sentence, but it wasn't hard for Chloe to see why. Lucifer was afraid though of what she hadn't a clue.
"You offered to show me before," Chloe reminded him.
"This has never happened before!" Lucifer snapped, gesturing toward where Renny had jumped.
There it was again. Fear. Simple honest fear etched in every line of his face. She supposed these things were possible to fake, but she sensed he wasn't. She didn't understand him. What could the Devil possibly be scared of? Still she knew he wasn't going to cave.
"The wings then," Chloe compromised.
"I already said you could see them when we get them back," Lucifer answered, though she sensed he was regretting this promise now.
"Alright then," Chloe replied.
There was silence for a while. Chloe watched the street. They could see it clearly from their vantage point on the roof. When her backup arrived and police cars started pulling up, Chloe was the first to notice. Lucifer just followed behind her silently.
Heading back down the stairs, Chloe went to brief her fellow officers. Cutter was recovering well and had given a statement. Renny was indeed the one who'd killed Erwin Scovell. She was surprised to hear that they had also recovered a container belonging to a Lucifer Morningstar.
Angel wings. A part of her still couldn't quite believe it. Still, a promise is a promise, and she was going to hold him to it.
Lucifer was just standing near a cop car watching them wheel Renny's body away on a gurney. Chloe got him up to speed then told him about the container.
"Where is it?" Lucifer asked.
"Inside," Chloe replied, holding up a pair of wire cutters.
For all his hesitation, Lucifer didn't argue with her coming along but followed as she led him to the container. Chloe watched as Lucifer broke the lock and then opened the doors.
"That is not angel wings," Chloe said as she looked at the very normal looking box in the center of the container.
"Well of course it's not," Lucifer said exasperatedly. "Those are just Russian dolls I keep here to stop people from looking any further. An empty container would be rather suspicious, don't you think, Detective?"
"Where are they then?" Chloe asked.
Rather than answer, Lucifer moved his hand over the metal wall on the right side of the shipping container. He seemed to find what he was looking for and pushed, which revealed a hidden door at the back of the container.
"Gone," Lucifer said.
He was right. The hidden compartment had nothing to hide. Chloe could see straps though that looked like they had once held something quite large in place.
"Not all mortals can handle proof of divinity, Detective," Lucifer said after a moment. "If they don't crumble and fall like Renny, they become entranced, addicted. Someone has my wings and we need to get them back."
"How?" Chloe asked at a loss. "I can't exactly put out an APB for angel wings." She chuckled at the very idea.
"Oh actually that's a good idea!" Lucifer said with enthusiasm. "Good thinking, Detective. Oh and I'll have Maze do a little digging as well, shall I?"
Chloe opened her mouth to protest, but Lucifer was already walking away, his mood completely recovered it seemed. Still Chloe couldn't help but wonder if the fear she'd witnessed was still there underneath.
Chloe knew Maze was the bartender at Lux, but that didn't make a lot of sense. Why would Lucifer want a bartender to look into this? Then a memory came back to her, something about Maze following Lucifer through the gates of hell. At the time she hadn't believed a word of it, but now... Was Maze like him? And if so, in what way?
It was all too much to take. Chloe needed a break. Once she finished up everything at the crime scene, Chloe headed back to the precinct to give everyone another reason to laugh at her by putting out an APB for angel wings. After that she went right home to bed.
Chloe woke up to a lot of messages from Lucifer on her phone. This wasn't new. He'd been doing this everyday since she'd put out the APB. Usually the messages said something about how Maze hadn't gotten anywhere yet and asked if she had any leads. As usual Chloe ignored him. Lucifer would know something when she did. Besides, it was way too early for this. Chloe got out of bed and got in the shower. He could wait.
It turned out however that immortals weren't the most patient of people. Before Chloe had so much as spread some jam on her toast her door opened and Lucifer appeared.
"Good morning, Detective," Lucifer said. "You weren't answering so I thought I'd come check."
"It's eight am," Chloe groaned at him. At least she was dressed for work now, even if he'd interrupted her breakfast. Chloe did not need a repeat of his breaking into her house while she was still in the shower.
"Yes well, no rest for the wicked and all that," Lucifer said absently. "So, leads?" Chloe just glared at him. "Right well, best we get you caffeinated then." He looked around and spotted the half drunk mug of coffee in front of her. "Seems you've got the caffeine well in hand. What else do you need? Food?"
"Time," Chloe said. "Usually I take time in the morning to get ready. Then I go to work."
"Yes well there isn't time for that today, Detective," Lucifer said energetically. "We have wings to find!"
"We are still waiting on the APB," Chloe reminded him.
"Yes, well there must be something we can do in the meantime," Lucifer said.
"Not really," Chloe replied. "Unless there is a new case on my desk when I get in to work."
"No time for boring human murders," Lucifer told her again. "Wings! Detective. Proof of divinity is out there among the humans wrecking who knows what kind of havoc."
"Don't you think you are being a bit dramatic?" Chloe said.
"One man has already died because he saw them," Lucifer reminded her. "The longer they stay in human hands the more danger there is of that happening again."
"But why does the devil care?" Chloe said. "Don't humans seem small to you?"
"Seeing my wings isn't a crime!" Lucifer snapped back. "They don't deserve to be punished just for that." He seemed genuinely upset. Once again this fascinated Chloe. "And humans, well humans are complicated to me." He added as if that was all he had to explain it.
"You really are confusing, you know that?" Chloe sighed.
"Okay yes, well, be confused later, Detective," Lucifer said clearly exasperated. "Now is the time to go to work."
"I haven't even finished my breakfast," Chloe said, holding up the piece of toast she was trying to eat.
"Take it with you," Lucifer said. "I'm driving."
"You most certainly are not!" Chloe tried to protest.
"I could always lift you and carry you to the car," Lucifer said, clearly annoyed.
"If you'd wanted to do that you'd have done it already," Chloe stated. She took another bit of her toast. "I'm driving, and you are waiting."
Lucifer looked very annoyed about this but planted himself in a chair all the same. If it turned out the reason for all she'd seen really was that he was the Devil, Chloe wasn't sure how she'd feel about the Devil listening when she told him to stay. There was something even weirder about that than his crazy abilities.
Chloe finished her breakfast and her coffee under the very impatient eye of Lucifer. When she was done and told him they could leave he sprang into motion at once. She drove them to work and was fully prepared to have to explain to Lucifer that it took time for leads to come in and her APB had been a long shot at best, but to her great surprise she didn't have to.
"Did you put out an APB for angel wings?" Dan asked her as walked past his desk.
"Yeah I know it's stupid, just doing someone a very strange favour," Chloe began to defend her strange actions.
"Well you got a hit," Dan replied.
"What?" Chloe almost couldn't believe it. She took the file he handed her. Even staring right at it she was managing some skepticism. She thanked Dan then turned to walk back to her desk with her nose in the file. Lucifer was sitting at her desk organizing her pens into a very rude shape.
"I know that look, Detective," Lucifer said when she approached. "You've found them haven't you!?"
"They are being sold at an auction house," she explained. "Tonight."
"Well we'd best hurry then," Lucifer said. "Can I drive this time?"
"No," Chloe said as she grabbed her keys. Once again Lucifer didn't argue. He just followed along and got into the passenger side. Chloe had already driven well over halfway to the cafe she was headed to when Lucifer caught on that they weren't going to an auction house.
"This doesn't look like the right area for an illegal auction house," Lucifer said. "And I should know. I've been to many of them."
"We don't have any idea where it is," Chloe explained. "But there is someone who knows. He's meeting us at a cafe."
Once parked and outside it didn't take long for Chloe to figure out who the FBI agent was even if she hadn't seen the badge on his belt.
"Agent Pitts?" Chloe asked as she approached.
"Detective Decker," Pitts replied respectively.
"Are these the wings you're after?" he asked, holding up a tablet with an image on it.
Lucifer leaned over her shoulder, closer than he usually got to her, and took a look. She was both surprised and not surprised to see the image of two beautiful great white feathery wings. At the base they were connected to what looked like skin. Chloe couldn't help but think of Lucifer's scars. If he had indeed cut these off his back, she couldn't even imagine how much that would have hurt. But wait he's been on earth for five years at least, right? How could the skin and blood look so fresh? Wouldn't it have rotted by now? In her line of work Chloe was all too familiar with what dead flesh looked like and it didn't look like that.
"Those are them, all right!" Lucifer said.
"The wings, along with a bunch of other crap people think is real, are being pawned off at a black market antiquities auction," Agent Pitts informed them. He then gave them details about which charity it was using as a cover as well as the venue.
Lucifer must have been going through the tablet for other listings at the auction, because he soon interrupted them by listing off items. "Saints teeth, holy napkins," Lucifer scoffed. "Oh a piece of the cross. They've got my wings in absurdly fraudulent company. It's insulting! Putting my wings on the block like some chintzy accoutrement."
Chloe took the tablet out of his hands. She wasn't sure what exactly was making her so uncomfortable. If he was telling the truth than speaking so opening about it felt dangerous somehow, and if he was delusional then it almost felt embarrassing to be next to him.
"Well you can take comfort knowing the auction is already set to be raided tonight," Agent Pitts explained.
"The FBI are going to snatch my wings?" Lucifer asked.
"When we get a chance to pounce on the bad guys we take it," Pitts replied.
"Okay so how do we get the wings back?" Chloe asked.
"After the raid," Pitts answered. "As long as you can prove the wings's provenance you'll get it back in 30 days."
Chloed replied that that was fine and Agent's Pitts left.
"Detective, we can't wait thirty days!" Lucifer whispered urgently once the agent was out of sight.
"Seems like you are gonna have to," Chloe replied. "There isn't anything more I can do."
"But there is more that I can do," Lucifer said, and he began to turn away.
"Oh no you don't," Chloe said, reaching forward to grab his arm. Though she knew he could force his way out of her grip he didn't. "What are you thinking?"
"I bet I can get myself invited to that auction," Lucifer said. "And buy the wings before the FBI raid the place."
"That's crazy," Chloe told him.
"Crazier than leaving proof of divinity in the hands of humans?" Lucifer said with a raised eyebrow. He looked at her then, more intensely than he had before. "I'm doing this, Detective. You can either come along or stay behind." His voice was soft, almost kind and Chloe knew what her answer was.
"I'm coming," Chloe said.
"Okay first things first," Lucifer replied. "You are gonna need a change of clothes."
As promised another chapter a day later... or at least most of a day. I still might be jumping the gun here but oh well. What do you guys think of how this next episode is going with Chloe in the know? When I went to re-watch it I realized that if she'd put that APB out earlier he'd have never ditched and come back and she'd have never gone to Dan for help the same that Lucifer would never have teamed up with Amenadiel. Puts quite a different spin on it if I do say so!
Next chapter goes up tomorrow! Happy reading.
Sneak Peek Chapter 7
"Did you manage to get an invitation?" Chloe asked.
"I have another plan," Lucifer replied. He had indeed tried to get an invitation, but this party was rather more exclusive than most.
"Did you call in a favour or…?" Chloe trailed off clearly intending it to be a question.
"Nope. Money Detective," Lucifer said. "Money always works."
"You should have told me you didn't have a plan!" Chloe grumbled under her breath. "I have contacts too, you know."
Lucifer didn't say anything. Maybe he should have let her get them into the party, but it was too late now. "Next time, Detective," he said.
"I really hope there isn't a next time," Chloe groaned.
They stopped talking as they approached the doorman.
