Chloe had been thinking through everything in her head over and over as she headed to see Dan. It bothered her that she couldn't figure out why he'd shown up to warn Lucifer. As far as she could tell Dan hated Lucifer, so why would he go out of his way to investigate a threat against him, especially one he never told Chloe about? The only explanation that made sense was that Dan had some kind of inside knowledge about the hit on Lucifer or knew someone else who had inside knowledge. Dan had been partnered up with Malcolm at the precinct since Malcolm's return to work. Maybe he'd noticed something and followed up. That still didn't explain why he'd looked so messed up when she'd seen him or how he'd run off when she'd tried to ask him about it. No, even her best case scenarios involved Dan lying to her. Chloe knew she wasn't going to like what he had to say, but she still wanted answers.

Dan had said he was going home to shower, so that's where she went to look for him. Hopefully, he hadn't been lying about that as well.

Chloe parked in his driveway and got out. Well, Dan's car was here, so at least that was a good sign. Walking up to the door she rang the bell. Nothing. She rang it again. This time she heard a slight scuffling noise, and then the door opened.

"Oh hey Chloe," Dan said. "I didn't expect-"

"Like hell you didn't," Chloe snapped, walking in without an invitation. "You think you can just mysteriously know things, look beat up, and walk away without me wondering why?"

There were still cuts on Dan's face, but his clothes were clean and his hair was wet. He'd probably just gotten out of the shower.

"By all means," Dan said dryly as he closed the door behind her. "Come in."

"What tip?" Chloe asked again.

"Just let it go," Dan said, with a sigh. "Please."

"You know I can't do that," Chloe told him, firmly. "Somehow you knew about a murder attempt on my partner and I'm just suppose to shrug that away like it's nothing?"

"We aren't together anymore," Dan snapped. "I don't have to tell you everything."

"You're right. You don't," Chloe agreed. "The only reason I'm here is because I know you. This is your chance to tell me your side of the story." Her voice had been kind up until now but it shifted into authoritative cop as she continued. "You get just one chance. If you'd rather keep your secrets then I'll just have to figure it out on my own. Because you know I will."

"You'll hate me," Dan said softly.

"And how much do you think I'll hate you once I figure it out on my own?" Chloe shot back.

There was a long silence during which she waited for him to speak. Chloe had said her peace. The ball was in his court, but if he didn't talk soon she was gonna walk away.

"I knew Malcolm was going to try to kill Lucifer because he told me," Dan confessed.

"And you didn't turn him in because?" Chloe snapped.

"If he goes down," Dan said. "I go down."

"He's blackmailing you?" Chloe scoffed. "You are gonna have to do better than that!"

"If I turned Malcolm in then he'd tell everyone it was me," Dan said, slowly. "I was the one you were looking for. I was the cop who shot Malcolm. There's a trapdoor that's how I got out."

"The 999 key we found was yours," Chloe whispered.

"So I take it that means you've already found the trapdoor?" Dan sighed.

"Yeah I did," Chloe yelled. "And you killed a man in cold blood!"

"He isn't dead," Dan defended himself. "And I only did it to protect you. Malcolm was about to shoot you."

"Oh trust me, you sent Malcolm straight to hell!" Chloe said, so mad she didn't even care if she sounded crazy. "You lied to me. You let them think I was crazy. Let me think that!"

"I'm sorry!" Dan said.

"You don't get to be sorry!" Chloe snapped at him. "We are so way past sorry. I don't even know you anymore."

"If I could take it all back I would," Dan said.

"You can't do that either!" Chloe said. "Life doesn't work that way."

"I know," Dan said, lowering his eyes to the floor.

Chloe had spent all this time freaking out about Lucifer being the Devil, worrying about his being dangerous when Dan had been secretly doing worse behind her back! It was a lot to process.

What was she supposed to do now? Turn the father of her child in and let Trixie grow up with her dad behind bars?

No, but there was something she could do.

Pulling back her fist Chloe brought it forward with as much might as she could muster. Dan's head swung to the side as her knuckles made contact with his skull.

"I deserved that," Dan said.

"Yeah you did," Chloe snapped. "And now you are gonna make this right. You are going to help me catch Malcolm."

"My testimony can only lead to me behind bars and Malcolm slapped on the wrist," Dan explained. "All I have on him is that he planned to kill Lucifer, and since he probably did it with the gun I got out of evidence for him, it will look more like I'm trying to frame him than he's framing me."

"Gun you got-" Chloe began.

"Blackmail," Dan reminded her.

"How did you get yourself into such a mess?!" Chloe exclaimed. "This is ridiculous! I know exactly who's to blame. I have two witnesses, but they are both useless!"

"Two?" Dan asked.

"Lucifer said he'd testify that Malcolm tried to kill him," Chloe said. "But like you, he doesn't think it will help."

"Actually that might work," Dan said.

"Trust me, it won't," Chloe sighed. "No, we need a plan."

"We need evidence of something specific," Dan said. "Something he can't get out of."

"We need him to make a mistake," Chloe said, grinning.

"So what? We just keep an eye on him and see if he messes up?" Dan asked. "That seems kinda like hoping for luck."

"Luck is really all I have at the moment," Chloe replied. "Luck and useless witnesses."

"I'll help in any way I can," Dan said. "No matter what that means for me."

Chloe nodded her head in understanding. Then she walked out the door. She needed some space. Chloe couldn't help but be relieved she hadn't pulled Dan in to help while she'd been working the Palmetto case. It was just so humiliating to think of him standing there pretending to help her look, when it was him she'd been looking for all along! Instead, she'd worked that case with the Devil. The thought made her laugh. It was just so ludicrous. The actual Devil. She worked with the Devil and the strangest thing about it was that it wasn't strange. It kinda felt normal. Way more normal than finding out her husband betrayed her this badly, even if they were separated.

Chloe was well over half way to Lux before she realized that's where she'd been going. Giving in to autopilot, Chloe continued and moments later was parking outside the club. When she got to the penthouse elevator she smiled. All that talk but he still hadn't put a lock on it.

When the doors opened and she stepped off, Chloe wasn't quite sure what she expected. Maybe something along the lines of Lucifer sitting alone drinking. What she saw was Lucifer with a drink, but he wasn't alone.

"You're back, Detective," Lucifer said cheerfully. "I rather didn't expect that. How did it go with Dan?"

Chloe looked from him to Maze beside him. Did that technically make her the only human in the room? It was a peculiar concept.

"What's wrong?" Lucifer asked. "Cat got your tongue?"

"Yeah," Chloe said after a moment. "Dan confessed he was the one who shot Malcolm. The Palmetto case, that key, it was his. Malcolm blackmailed Dan into working with him which is how he knew Malcolm would try to kill you."

"Well I didn't see that coming," Lucifer said. He paused then added more thoughtfully. "You might have horrible taste in men, Detective."

Chloe ignored him. Instead she looked at Maze again. Actual Demon. She shook her head. Why was this bugging her so much? Lucifer was the actual Devil, after all and she didn't seem to have a problem with that anymore. But she knew Lucifer. She'd seen him take a bullet for her. This Maze was a bit more of a mystery.

"Two useless witnesses against Malcolm is just about as helpful as zero," Chloe continued, trying her best not to stare at Maze. "So I figure we wait for Malcolm to make a mistake."

"Usually I'd say I could scare him into a confession," Lucifer sighed. "But not even the Devil can scare a man who's been to hell and back."

"What are you looking at?" Maze snapped at Chloe suddenly.

"Nothing," Chloe said, taking a step back.

"Well of course she's nervous when you bark at her like that," Lucifer sighed. "Can't we all play nice? Now that we are on speaking terms again you are just going to have to adapt to the Detective's presence, Mazikeen."

"You guys aren't fighting anymore?" Chloe asked, surprised. "But you said she betrayed you."

"Lifes too short to hold grudges," Lucifer explained. "What's blabbing to a brother compared to thousands of years of loyal service. Besides, she's gonna spy on him for me now."

Chloe blinked at Lucifer. This is how he made up with his friends? But then again he'd said he didn't have any friends until recently. Maybe he considered Maze more his minion than his friend.

"Yeah well I only came to get you up to speed on what's going on," Chloe continued. "I'll call when we have a case."

"Splendid, Detective," Lucifer said. "See you at work then."

"Right, so I'm gonna go now," Chloe said, still unsure exactly what was making her so uncomfortable. Lucifer had told her Maze wasn't a monster, and despite everything she trusted his word. She just didn't understand what felt so wrong to her about this situation. If it wasn't her being a demon, then what was the problem?

Once she went back down the elevator, Chloe tried to focus on something else. Getting into her car, she used the drive home to clear her head so that when she walked through her doors she could smile at the babysitter like she hadn't just had the strangest day ever. Between the dirty cop moonlighting as a hit man from hell and the confession from Dan, Chloe needed a normal night with her daughter.

"Are you okay mommy?" Trixie asked, once the babysitter had left.

"Mommy has had a very strange day," Chloe said, bending down to speak to her daughter eye to eye. "But what she wants to know is how your day went?"

"Is Lucifer why you had a strange day?" Trixie asked.

"Among other things," Chloe replied. "How was school today?"

"Okay I guess," Trixie shrugged. "How did Lucifer make your day strange?"

Chloe didn't want to lie to her daughter, but she didn't want to burden her either. Chloe thought carefully before she spoke.

"You know Lucifer helps me solve cases," Chloe began. "But sometimes he needs my help too."

"Because you're partners?" Trixie asked.

"Yeah," Chloe smiled at her.

"And partner's help each other," Trixie continued.

"That's right monkey," Chloe smiled. "Now your turn. How was your day?"

"He's still throwing fries at me," Trixie said. "And I know you say that means he likes me but I don't like him."

"I see," Chloe said. "Have you tried talking to him?"

"He doesn't really talk," Trixie said. "Boys at school are all kinda like monkeys, but not in a good way."

"Are they now?" Chloe asked, making a mental note to remind Trixie of this opinion when she started dating.

"Yeah," Trixie said. "How do I get them to behave?"

"It's one of the great mysteries of our time," Chloe told her daughter.

"But you must know," Trixie continued.

"And why is that?"

"Because you get Lucifer to behave," Trixie told her.

"That is so not true," Chloe laughed. "Lucifer never behaves."

"He does for you," Trixie countered.

"Lucifer does whatever Lucifer wants to do," Chloe sighed. "I have nothing to do with it."

"You're wrong," Trixie told her.

"And you are gonna be late for bed!" Chloe said, reaching forward to tickle her daughter.

"Storytime first," Trixie said, and Chloe obliged her.

I just couldn't resist working in a good equivalent scene to that one with Chloe and Trixie after Chloe shot Lucifer in the show. It was so cute! What did you guys think of Dan's confession? With the way things were going with Chloe never working with him on the Palmetto case and her seeing him at Lucifer's apartment, I just couldn't imagine her not getting the truth out of him sooner. I kinda like this better than him coming clean on his own. Just feels so much more satisfying somehow. Most of this scene actually doesn't exist in the show (since it happens between scenes) so it was really fun to write! These chapters are starting to deviate more and more from the show! Getting quite exciting I think. :) Hope you agree.

Also hope I am not updating too fast for people to keep up. I just can't stop writing this! If I wasn't updating this fast I'd have like 15 chapters sitting waiting to go online which just feels wrong to me. Just now I stopped working on chapter 19 to upload 16. Been writing pretty much everyday even if only a little. This story is consuming my brain!

Sneak Peek Chapter 17

Chloe knocked on the door and a tall guy in a black robe answered.

"Filii hircus," Chloe told him in a whisper.

"Today is private," the robed guy said.

Chloe reached for her badge, but Lucifer had a better idea. This was a Satan club, right? What better way to get in than to be himself. Lucifer held out his hand to stop Chloe. She looked at him suspiciously, but followed his lead, letting her jacket fall covering her badge.

"You need to leave," the robed guy said again. "As I said, a private event today."

"The Devil does love to crash a party," Lucifer said, letting his eyes flash red for just a fraction of a second. "Especially if it's his own."

The robed man screamed like a little girl, ran away and left the door wide open.

Chloe promptly hit him in the shoulder. "Ouch!" Lucifer whined. "What was that for? I got us in didn't I?"
