Despite her trying to focus on the crime scene, Chloe couldn't help thinking about how Lucifer had shown that preacher his real face. He'd also shown it to the producer who'd shot her, the guy who'd jumped off the roof, and he'd flashed his eyes at the spider who'd killed Father Frank. It was almost like he used it as a weapon. Now that she thought about it, it was actually quite alarming to see how often he used his devil face to mess with people. Bad people, but still. Chloe was used to the law deciding what bad people deserved, not a single man. Even if he was the Devil. It just felt wrong to her, that one individual could have that much say.
As much as this worried her, it was also almost comforting somehow to know she really wasn't the only human who knew. Then again, even with there being other humans who knew the devil was real, it seemed Chloe was the only one for whom that knowledge wasn't meant as a punishment. She still wanted to understand why he was so fixated on her. Why had the Devil made her a believer when the only other people he ever revealed himself to were all murderers, liars and thieves?
They'd found the kid by locating his car. It was parked outside the warehouse they were investigating now. The whole thing seemed like a bust until someone looked up. The first victim's boyfriend had been strung up to the ceiling at the center of a triangle. On his chest carved into his skin was a pentagram. It wasn't until back up was called and they got the body down and confirmed the identification that Chloe saw the red paint. Noticing that the shapes weren't random Chloe walked a little ways away and turned to read the word 'Morningstar' spelled out on old wooden boxes in bright red paint. This was bad, and it almost definitely had something to do with the Devil.
"Morningstar isn't exactly the most common name for the devil," Dan said. He was standing beside her, looking at the same red letters as her.
"You are going to have to trust me because I can't explain," Chloe began. "But this isn't our Lucifer."
It was strange how sure she was about this. Even knowing that Lucifer was the Devil, she couldn't believe him capable of such things. Lucifer had shown great power and willingness to hurt people who'd done something to earn it, but she'd never seen him so much as consider harming the innocent which both these victims were. Besides, even if she did believe him capable of something like this, why would a man powerful enough to crush metal with his bare hand bother to use a flimpy knife? To top it off, the Devil was the last person likely to do up a crime scene to worship himself. It simply made no sense that Lucifer could have done this, but that didn't mean he wasn't involved.
"How can you be so sure?" Dan asked. "He takes his Devil shtick pretty seriously."
"You have no idea," Chloe muttered under her breath. Then in a normal voice she continued. "Even so, the only way Lucifer is involved is indirectly. Someone might be trying to get his attention, or frame him, or even impress him."
"Even if it's only that, and I'm not saying I agree with you," Dan said. "It's still a conflict of interest. He shouldn't be here."
Chloe had to admit, Dan might be right, but if someone was trying to impress Lucifer or get his attention like she suspected, then wouldn't they end up tracking him down even if she sent Lucifer home?
"That won't help Dan," Chloe said. "If whoever did this is really doing it for Lucifer then we need him here to lure the killer out."
"Is it just me, Detective, or does that sound like you are planning to use me as bait?" Lucifer's voice cut into their conversation as he walked over.
"I have a theory," Chloe said. "But absolutely no proof."
"Well let's hear it then." Lucifer smiled at her.
"Not here," Chloe whispered. She had no idea who on the force was still on good terms with Malcolm, and she didn't want to risk being overheard.
She'd first had this idea when she'd seen Malcolm be all buddy buddy with Lucifer at the theater crime scene, but she'd dismissed it then. Now it was starting to feel more and move likely. Who knew what Lucifer really was? Who was trying to get closer to him? Who was just messed up enough to be capable of real evil?
"Right, my place it is then," Lucifer said with a clap of his hands. Chloe agreed, and though Dan looked dubious he followed her lead. Chloe would have chewed him out otherwise. Dan owed her that much.
Making excuses as they went and generally trying not to be suspicious, the three of them left the scene. Once outside they all got into Chloe's car and she drove off.
"Okay, so what was so important you couldn't tell us at the scene?" Dan asked once they were all off the elevator and in Lucifer's penthouse.
"I think Malcolm killed those two kids to impress Lucifer," Chloe said.
"That doesn't make any sense, Chloe," Dan replied. "He wants to kill Lucifer, not worship him."
"Yes, but he didn't kill Lucifer," Chloe continued. "Malcolm switched to trying to get close to Lucifer. Asking him to have drinks or hang out."
"That isn't much to go on," Dan continued.
"No, I think the Detective might be onto something," Lucifer said. "Hell really messes humans up, and Malcolm was already a dirty cop before he got down there. Who knows how it affected his psyche."
"You're making even less sense than usual," Dan sighed.
"Ignore him," Chloe continued, directing her comment at Dan since it was easier than getting Lucifer to play along. "Remember how I said we were waiting for Malcolm to mess up?" Dan nodded. "Well I think he has, but we need to prove it."
"If you're right, and that's a big if, Malcolm is probably planning on pinning this on someone else," Dan explained. "Like he wanted to pin Lucifer's murder on me."
"Which means he'll be planting evidence," Chloe said more to herself than them.
"Okay, this is what we are going to do," Chloe said with as much authority as she could muster. "Dan, go back to the scene and see what you can find. Look for signs of evidence tampering." She turned to Lucifer. "You are going to stay right here and be the bait while I hide. Lucifer will call Malcolm and get him over here. If I'm right, Malcolm will want to brag to Lucifer about what he's done."
"Oh this does sound exciting," Lucifer piped in. Chloe rolled her eyes. For a guy who was suddenly as killable as a human he sure wasn't scared of much!
"I still think you're wrong," Dan said. "But we'll do it your way." With that he turned to leave. Chloe called out to him to take her car rather than get a ride so it wouldn't look like she was here. Dan agreed and then disappeared behind the elevator doors.
"Don't mind him," Lucifer said cheerfully. "I believe you, Detective."
"Yeah, and Dan would believe me too if I could explain any of this celestial shit to him," Chloe sighed.
"Do you want him to be a believer too?" Lucifer asked. He didn't sound too thrilled about the idea, but Chloe sensed he'd do it if she asked him to.
"No," Chloe replied.
"Alright then. I believe it's time for me to look like a worm wriggling on a hook," Lucifer added spiritedly.
"Once again, happy to be put in mortal danger," Chloe sighed. As always Lucifer made no sense, but for totally different reasons than Dan thought he did. She'd seen genuine terror on Lucifer's face before, but never for the things he should be scared of like when she planned to dangle him over the water to catch a murderous fish.
"Make the call," Chloe instructed the Devil.
"I know it's the plan, but I really don't want him in my house," Lucifer whined. "He's so unpleasant." Chloe gave him her best do-what-I-say-or-else look and, with a sigh, Lucifer got his phone out of his pocket.
Chloe couldn't hear what Malcolm was saying, but she could hear Lucifer's side of the conversation. She heard him invite Malcolm over for a drink and was actually surprised how easily Malcolm accepted.
"He'll be over shortly," Lucifer said, when he hung up the phone. "He was pretty eager. It was odd. If I hadn't called, it almost seemed like he'd have made an excuse to see me anyway."
"If he is the one behind this," Chloe continued. "Then I am sure he's doing it for you. Makes sense he'd want to come when you call."
"The whole idea makes me feel gross," Lucifer said, a look of disgust on his face. "Like I need another shower or twelve."
"All we need is a confession," Chloe said. "Or evidence and a motive that makes sense to, well, normal people."
"Oh, is that all?" Lucifer asked.
"I'm going to be behind the curtains in the corner," Chloe explained, before she left to follow her own instructions.
When Chloe had herself in position Lucifer's voice almost made her jump. He was much too close to keep her cover.
"I can see your feet, Detective," Lucifer told her.
"Then where do you suggest I hide?" Chloe asked, moving the curtain away from her face to narrow her eyes at him. "This whole place is all open floor plans and glass."
Taking a few steps to his left, Lucifer disappeared from her line of sight. Chloe heard a scraping noise and then saw the side of his sofa.
"There," Lucifer said. "That should cover your feet."
"Thanks," Chloe said almost sarcastically. Even when he did useful things Lucifer had a way of making them about him with just his tone of voice.
She heard Lucifer's footsteps move away and then they waited. It wasn't that long before she heard the elevator doors open. She tensed up. This was it.
"Ah, you came," Lucifer's voice reached Chloe in her hiding place.
"Yeah, it was great to get your call," Malcolm said. "Glad we can put all that, me trying to kill you, magic coin stuff behind us and be buddies."
"Would you like a drink?" Lucifer offered. Chloe could easily imagine him gesturing to that massive bar that made up a quarter of his penthouse.
Malcolm accepted, and Chloe heard the click of glasses.
"I saw how they were treating you at the crime scene," Malcolm spoke next. "And that street preacher. Posers, every one of them. Don't even sweat it."
"Yes, well you can't make everyone happy I suppose," Lucifer's voice replied. There was something off about Lucifer's voice that Chloe couldn't quite identify. Whatever it was she hoped it didn't blow his cover.
"You know what would be great though?" Malcolm continued. "Getting some ladies up here. I've heard about your parties. Always wanted to join in."
"Now might not be the best time for a party," Lucifer said. "Next time."
"Would mean a lot man," Malcolm said, sounding touched. His tone confirmed that Chloe had at least been right that Malcolm now idolized the devil.
"Cheers," Lucifer said and Chloe presumed he held up his glass.
"It feels good, hanging out here with you," Malcolm said, with more energy. "Ever since I went to hell, there's been things in my head no one would understand. Except you, of course! And I want you to know I respect the hell out of you. Get it? Hell?" He laughed. "Up top?"
Then Chloe heard only silence. She could imagine based on Malcolm's words that he was waiting for a high five, but why hadn't Lucifer given it to him?
"You gonna leave me hanging?" Malcolm asked.
"You have red paint on your hand," Lucifer's voice was calm, but certain. "Just like the paint we saw at the warehouse."
Chloe was on full alert now. This was it. She had him. All she needed was a motive, though a confession would be nice.
"Must have gotten it on me at the scene," Malcolm said.
"Doubt that," Lucifer replied. "Everyone was wearing gloves."
"Aw man, you caught me!" Malcolm said. His voice was disturbingly happy. "Literally red handed!" There was such excitement in his voice it almost made Chloe wanna throw up.
"I was wondering when you'd figure it out," Malcolm continued. "Been dying all day to tell you!"
"Why?" Lucifer asked, intensely. "Why did you kill those people?"
"You mean those frauds?" Malcolm scoffed. "Duh. 'Cause they were frauds. So what do you think? Impressed?"
"You're insane," Lucifer said, with real revolution in his voice.
Even witnessing the confirmation of her theory with her own eyes, or rather ears, Chloe could hardly believe it. Malcolm was criminally insane! Had he been this bad before he'd died, or had hell done this to him? She'd probably never find out.
"I know!" Malcolm said. "Don't you love it!? Of course you do, we're the same."
"We are not the same," Lucifer's voice continued. He sounded different now, angrier. Chloe was starting to wonder if she should come out from behind the curtain, but something in Lucifer's voice stopped her.
"Don't worry," Malcolm said. "I've already figured out who to pin it on. That street preacher. Genius right? Already got some evidence planted, so it's all good."
Chloe heard a loud crash. She could only imagine that Lucifer had broken something.
"But I did this for you?" Malcolm said, his voice sounded disappointed. "Aren't you happy?"
"Why would I be happy?" Lucifer's voice was calm but with great anger underneath. "I'm not evil. I punish evil."
"Yeah, but you're the Devil," Malcolm said.
"And you think you know who that is don't you?" Lucifer snapped. "The whole world thinks they know. Torturer, maybe. An inflictor of just dessert, sure. But a senseless murderer, I am not."
Despite the anger in his voice, Lucifer wasn't as mad as when Father Frank had died. This time his anger was deeper, darker, but more controlled. He wasn't in the grips of an emotion he couldn't control.
Chloe heard Malcolm bring up the coin to try and save himself, but Lucifer just laughed. "Don't worry Malcolm," Lucifer said. "I'm not gonna send you to hell. I'm bringing hell to you!"
And then Chloe heard a crash and a thud. She suspected Lucifer had thrown Malcolm across the room. She knew it was time for her to arrest Malcolm, but a part of Chloe didn't want to come out from behind the curtain. Had this really been her idea? Malcolm probably had a gun, but at the moment Lucifer seemed rather more frightening than the murderer did, even if she knew rationally that the Devil wouldn't hurt her.
Is this why nothing scared him? Even vulnerable he was far more powerful than she realized.
"And after I'm finished with you, Detective Decker can put you in a cold dark room so you can think about what you've done," Lucifer said, in a calm, yet very compelling voice.
When Chloe heard Malcolm whimpering she knew it was time to stop the Devil's punishment, even if she didn't want to move.
The very second she made to come out of hiding to take down Malcolm a new booming voice filled the room. Chloe pushed the curtain back and saw Lucifer's brother standing on the balcony glaring daggers at Lucifer.
"No need to thank me," Lucifer said to his brother. "I'm just in the middle of clearing up your mess." He gestured to Malcolm who was busy getting up off the floor. Judging by the broken lamp and shattered glass, Chloe had been right about Lucifer throwing Malcolm across the room earlier.
"You sent your demon to seduce me and then kill me," Amenadiel accused.
But Chloe wasn't really watching the bickering siblings. She was focused on Malcolm, who was up off the ground now and headed for the elevator. Chloe made a dash for him, her gun raised. She was slowed down by going around that stupid sofa, Lucifer had moved to hide her feet.
"He's getting away!" she called out to Lucifer, but the Devil was very thoroughly distracted at the moment.
"Now look what you've done!" Lucifer's voice rang out. Chloe assumed he was talking to his brother. "The man you just freed, the one you raised from the dead, he's murdering humans now."
But Chloe didn't listen to the rest. If Lucifer wasn't going to be helpful it was up to her. Chloe ran for the elevator, but just as she reached the doors, they closed on that murders smiling face. Chloe banged on the closed doors in frustration. She'd had him! But now he was gone. Even if she waited for the elevator to come back up and followed him down, Malcolm would be long gone. This stupid place didn't even have stairs, or at least no stairs that seemed to go down. Malcolm's confession was pretty useless if he got away.
A series of loud thuds and crashes from behind her, made Chloe turn round. Lucifer and Amenadiel were on the ground surrounded by shattered glass. Both looked like they'd taken a hell of a beating, though Lucifer's injuries were far worse.
"Oh so that's what this is about?" Lucifer laughed as she stood up to look down at his brother. "You like Maze. Don't blame you brother, she is a wild woman in the sack."
Amenadiel didn't seem to take this well. He lifted Lucifer up almost effortlessly and then threw him back down again with a thud that shook the floor and smashed a table into pieces.
"If you wanted me dead you should have done it yourself!" Amenadiel yelled at Lucifer who was still on the ground bleeding.
Chloe wasn't sure what to do. She knew her bullets couldn't hurt Amenadiel. Both of them seemed far too focused on each other to really notice her. Would the noise from firing her gun get their attention, at least? Did she even want their attention? It was like watching titan's fight. Chloe was worried about getting caught in the crossfire.
"Says the guy who brought a man back from the dead to kill me?" Lucifer scoffed. "You've been using pawns from the start! And not just Malcolm but Linda too."
"You left me no choice!" Amenadiel yelled back.
"There's always a choice," Lucifer exclaimed. "And you chose wrong!" Lifting Amenadiel up, Lucifer threw him into the bar, shattering glass in every direction. Chloe watched as Amenadiel got up completely unscathed. There was no way to watch these two fight without believing they were more than human. Yes, Lucifer was bleeding quite a lot more than his brother, but Amenadiel was bleeding too. It seemed even celestials were vulnerable to another angel's punch.
"Enough!"
Chloe spun round. If she hadn't said that, and neither of the angels had, then who? Chloe turned to see that the demon had arrived.
"I'm the pawn," Maze said walking towards the two of them.
But wait, how had she gotten in? Chloe was still standing beside the elevator. If Chloe had known there was a second way out of this place she could have gone after Malcolm!
"You both used me," Maze said. Then she pulled out two knives and laid them on one of the not yet broken tables. "Here. Kill each other." Then Maze turned around and walked right out again, leaving both men looking rather humbled.
Chloe decided it was time to make herself known.
"And on that note," Chloe said, stepping forward. "Can we please stop destroying furniture for two seconds and go after Malcolm?"
What did you guys think of Chloe's pov of the scene she originally never witnessed? Also I was going to wait to update until later tonight or tomorrow morning but as you have probably guessed by my update speed I am not the most patient person ever LOL. I just can't wait to read the reviews and hear what you guys have to say!
Really the biggest difference here was mostly why Lucifer was with Malcolm at his penthouse and Lucifer's lack of suspicion towards Chloe due to his not knowing she's causing his vulnerability. Once again subtle differences but they sure feel alot different to me! I think season two is going to be much more different from the show with Chloe knowing than season 1 has been. I actually considered starting this fic at season two and just changing it so Chloe found out by testing Lucifer's blood, but then I thought it would mean missing all the great opportunities in season 1 to show Chloe in the know so I started writing it from almost reveal in S1E4.
Sneak Peek Chapter 19
"Lucifer has a plan," Amenadiel answered.
"I do not," Lucifer huffed. "You're the only one here who has actually plotted a murder, even if I am still alive, which makes you the qualified party."
"You said it yourself. You're still alive so clearly I'm not very good at it!" Amenadiel snapped back. "You should come up with a plan."
"Why should I do all the heavy lifting?" Lucifer shot back. "I have a better idea, why don't you go back in time and not mess it all up to begin with."
"You know I'm suddenly remembering why I wanted you dead in the first place," Amenadiel grumbled at him.
Lucifer was about to yell back when the Detective interrupted their fight.
"So there is no plan," she stated firmly, her voice echoing more than usual due to its volume. Was she mad at him? "And all immortals are children. Theory confirmed."
"Detec-" Lucifer began but Chloe held up a hand to silence him.
