Lucifer had only promised to let Chloe go alone because of the way she'd phrased her question. It left a lovely loophole for him to follow behind her. There was no way in hell, earth or heaven he was going to let Chloe Decker face that vile man alone. The very idea of her lying on the ground, cold and still, did things to Lucifer he didn't have words for. If the Devil had anything to say about it Chloe was going to live, no matter how this went down.
By the time Lucifer got to the warehouse Chloe was already inside, standing unarmed in front of Malcolm who had a gun on her. It took all Lucifer's strength to stay in the shadows. He wanted so badly to destroy the gun threatening her life and the man along with it, but Trixie was still in danger. Malcolm had her at his side, so Lucifer was patient. He waited. Chloe pulled off her end by getting Malcolm to release Trixie before showing him the money. Lucifer watched as Chloe spoke to her daughter and then Trixie ran off.
Chloe opened the truck to show Malcolm his money. The gun wasn't pointed at Chloe anymore. Lucifer wondered if he could wait, until even the Detective was out of harm's way before acting.
"It's all there," Chloe said. "It's in the bag."
"I believe you," Malcolm said, raising the gun back up to point it at Chloe.
It was then that Lucifer knew Malcolm had no interest in simply getting his money. He wanted to hurt Chloe.
"I was going to shoot you at Palmetto," Malcolm began. "And now I feel like I've been given a second chance."
That was it. Lucifer came out from the shadows. Malcolm turned to see who was there, and Lucifer watched Chloe run and hide.
"Exactly, you were given a second chance at life," Lucifer said, trying to stall for time. "Looks to me like you're wasting it."
"Hey buddy," Malcolm said. "Long time no frame."
"Yes well that didn't actually stick like you wanted it to," Lucifer replied. "We didn't even find the body until well after everyone knew what you are."
"Oh, and what am I?" Malcolm asked, humor in his voice.
"A senseless murder," Lucifer replied easily. "Fits quite well don't you think? What with you pointing that gun at me and all."
"Clearly trying to frame you wasn't enough," Malcolm continued. "I should probably find a more permanent solution. Can't have the Devil hunting me down, now can I?"
"Give me the gun, Malcolm," Lucifer said. He was running out of stalling ideas. He hadn't really had a plan before rushing in here.
"I'm not afraid of you," Malcolm replied. "All you are doing is getting yourself killed and just to buy your precious detective some time. It's disappointing really. The Devil running around after a human. It's pathetic. I can't believe I ever looked up to you."
"You have it all wrong," Lucifer said. "I've only come here to ask you a question." He really was running out of stalling ideas. Hopefully, Chloe had more. "What is it that you desire?"
His hope of her brilliant plan was crushed when Chloe appeared walking towards them from Lucifer's right with her hands up. Lucifer wished she'd thought of a better idea. All this did was put her in danger again, which was the very thing he was trying to prevent.
"You don't want to do this Malcolm," Chloe said. She was quite close now, just a few feet away from Lucifer. "You made a deal with the Devil, remember? If you shoot him, that coin won't be yours anymore."
"That isn't how it works," Malcolm said quickly. "Since when do you know about our deal?"
"Since I told her," Lucifer replied easily. "And actually she is, in fact, right about that. Go back on a deal with the Devil and the whole thing is null and void."
"It's true, Malcolm," Chloe said, slowly. "The money is all there. Just take it and go. No one will stop you."
"Oh but I know that isn't true," Malcolm said. "I know he'll chase me to the ends of the earth the moment I leave here."
"No he won't," Chloe said. "I promise. You can just go."
Malcolm looked at her intently and then at Lucifer. He had the strangest look on his face, like he'd suddenly understood something.
"I believe you could actually keep that promise," Malcolm said, thoughtfully. "Lucifer made you a believer. He followed you here. The only way that makes sense is if you hold power over him."
"You are the one with the gun," Chloe replied calmly. "Not me."
"Yes but you're the one with the Devil on a leash," Malcolm said, maliciously. "So if I can't shoot him…" Malcolm's arm turned and suddenly the gun wasn't pointed at Lucifer anymore. "Then let's watch the Devil dance."
Lucifer knew the gun was about to go off and like so often happened with Chloe around, Lucifer didn't think; he simply reacted. His body moved almost before he had told it to do so. By the time the gun went off, Lucifer was in its path, shielding Chloe.
But this wasn't like before. The bullet hadn't hit his shoulder. This time the bullet had struck his chest. Lucifer could feel the blood flowing out of him as his own traitorous heart pumped it away from his body. He wasn't even standing up any longer. Lucifer was laying on his back on the ground. Even as the world started to go dark, Lucifer could see Malcolm standing over him.
"You feel that?" Malcolm said. "That's what it's like to die. I know 'cause I've done it. And what I want more than anything is for you to feel that pain like I did." Malcolm then held up the coin and added, "And since I shot Chloe and not you, this is still mine. See you in hell, never."
Then Malcolm stood up and pointed his gun forward and out of Lucifer's line of vision.
"And as for you," Malcolm said, turning his head from side to side as if looking for someone. "Wherever you've run off too." The gun jerked in his hand as if out of frustration. Lucifer knew he was talking to Chloe though it seemed the Detective was evading him. "Now that your little protector is out of commission it's time to send you down to hell to join him."
Lucifer had never felt so powerless in his entire immortal life. Even moments ago when he'd gotten shot at least he'd had the power to put himself between Chloe and the gun, but now he could barely move. The world was trying to go dark on him and Chloe was still in danger.
All he wanted, the only thing that mattered was protecting her. Even powerless as he was on the ground, Lucifer had one last thing left to try. If it could save the Detective, he'd try anything.
And so Lucifer prayed. For the first time in countless millennia Lucifer prayed to his Father. He would do anything, be the son Father always wanted, if only God would protect Chloe.
Lucifer's blood continued to flow away from his body as the world went dark and the Devil died.
Hell looked much the same as it always did. Endless hallways with doors to hell loops for every guilty soul imaginable. He did not miss the decor. And that ash! But that didn't matter. All he wanted to know was if his father had heard him. Was Chloe alright?
It was then that he saw it. The door was open. But how was that possible? Even with him away from the throne the gates should never have been opened. It wasn't feasible! Lucifer just stared, all else forgotten for a moment.
Then suddenly, Lucifer was breathing. It came as quite a shock to him, taking in air. Hadn't he died? What was he doing breathing, all of a sudden? Then he noticed the coin in his pocket. The coin that was suddenly his again. Well, that explained it.
Looking around, Lucifer quickly realized he was back on earth and, better than that, he was alive and uninjured. He doubted more than a second had passed here while he'd been wandering the gates of hell. That meant Chloe was still hiding and Malcolm needed punishing.
Feeling completely better as if he'd never been shot in the first place, Lucifer got up and went after his prey. Malcolm was hunting Chloe, and Lucifer was going to make him suffer for that.
Finding him was easy. Sneaking up on him was even easier. Grabbing hold of the gun, Lucifer punched Malcolm right in the face. He fell back, looking rather shocked.
"But I killed you," Malcolm said, stunned.
"Yes, well, it appears you did just as good a job killing me as you did framing me," Lucifer laughed, as he punched Malcolm again.
"But angels can't kill humans, remember," Malcolm said slowly, looking scared. "You said you wouldn't kill me."
"That is correct," Lucifer answered. "I did promise not to kill you, and a Devil always keeps his word."
Before Lucifer could begin to describe all the elegant ways he planned to torture Malcolm here on earth, he was interupted.
"I made no such promise," Chloe's voice rang out right before Lucifer heard gun fire. He watched as she fired three rounds right into Malcolm's chest.
Malcolm fell to the ground, his breathing failing. "Doesn't matter," he wheezed. "I have your coin. I'll be back."
"Even if that were true, she'd just kill you again," Lucifer said devilishly.
Lucifer enjoyed watching Malcolm struggling to breath as he rummaged through his pockets looking for the coin that was no longer there.
"Looking for this?" Lucifer said as he held up the coin for Malcolm to see.
"How?" Malcolm gasped.
"It appears the big guy wants me down here," Lucifer replied grinning.
"What does that mean?" Chloe asked him. After shooting Malcolm, Chloe had come to stand beside him as they both looked down at Malcolm getting his just desserts.
"I'll explain later," Lucifer told her easily. "But for now." He held up the coin. "You want this right?" And then Lucifer tossed the coin towards Malcolm.
"What?" Chloe's voice sounded totally confused until the coin disappeared into thin air just beyond the grasp of Malcolm's fingers.
"One use only," Lucifer informed Malcolm.
With only seconds left before his soul left his body, Malcolm reached out and clung to the shipping crate beside him. Then his arm fell and his heart stopped.
Despite his satisfaction at Malcolm's end, Lucifer had to admit it didn't feel as good as he'd expected. Everything had gotten too messy with the Detective's daughter. More than that, Lucifer couldn't stop thinking about what he'd seen in Hell. The very idea scared him more than he wanted to admit.
"Trixie," Chloe was calling out. "You can come out honey."
Lucifer turned to see the Detective down on her knees, hugging her offspring with all her might.
"Forgive me if I don't join in the group hug," Lucifer said.
"So?" Chloe asked, in that way she did that meant she was serious.
"So what?" Lucifer said grinning.
"You said you'd explain," Chloe reminded him.
"Ah, yes," Lucifer smiled. "As always, Detective you ask and I supply, just maybe a little bit more later than this, hmm?"
"Alright," Chloe replied.
"See. Told you mommy," Trixie said, looking up at Chloe. "You must know."
"Enough out of you," Chloe said, in that voice she only used with her daughter. Lucifer liked to call it her parent voice. Reaching over, Chloe hugged her daughter again. Lucifer turned away. Seemed like a private moment to him. The Devil shouldn't pry.
"I need to call this in," Chloe said, before getting out her phone. "Did you bring a car?"
"Well, of course, I came in a car," Lucifer sighed. "I'm the Devil not Mary Poppins."
Chloe rolled her eyes at him, before dialing her phone.
Lucifer didn't have much to do while they waited for backup. He thought about explaining things to Chloe, but with the little human around it didn't seem wise. He tried, and failed, to keep his mind off what he'd seen in hell. What did it mean that she'd escaped? And why had Father tasked him with the job of returning her to hell? When he'd made the deal, Lucifer had assumed his father wanted him to rule hell once more, what with his sending Amenadiel down to accomplish that very goal.
When backup arrived, Chloe got to work telling them what went down. Since she had both Malcolm and the money they weren't going to reprimand her. Lucifer was asked to give a statement and though he left out a couple celestial parts he was, as always, honest in his replies.
"I'm going to take Trixie home," Chloe told Lucifer once they were done giving statements. "I'll see you later?"
"Of course, Detective," Lucifer replied.
Chloe left in the car she'd come in, but without any of the money that had been in her trunk on her way there.
As Lucifer drove home, his first thought was of Amenadiel. Had he succumbed to his injuries? Was Lucifer's confidence in Maze misplaced or had she had some kind of plan?
When Lucifer arrived home to see his brother completely fine and asleep on his sofa, Lucifer's next thought was where he'd get a drink, since he'd smashed his bar to pieces. This was going to be quite the inconvenience. Even paying top dollar, it took time to get repairs done.
Looking through the smashed bottles, Lucifer managed to find one that still had amber liquid in it. He collected two glasses from the part of the bar he hadn't destroyed and poured drinks.
"Have a good nap, did you?" Lucifer said as his brother began to stir.
"Did Chloe catch Malcolm?" Amenadiel asked.
"More than that. She shot him," Lucifer said. "Shot him dead, but that's old news now."
Amenadiel looked quite relieved to hear this. "Where is Maze?" he asked.
"I was going to ask you that same thing," Lucifer said. "It appears she did find a way to fix you."
"Yeah she did," Amenadiel said, with that same voice he'd been using earlier when they'd been fighting. It was the soft voice that had told Lucifer that his brother had a thing for his demon in the first place.
"I would say that means everything worked out," Lucifer continued. "But there's been a new development. I spoke to dad."
"Excuse me?" Amenadiel asked, shocked, as Lucifer knew he would be.
"I offered him my services in exchange for… well never mind, the point is, he accepted," Lucifer said. He was so not about to tell his brother why he'd prayed. Lucifer didn't need that kind of embarrassment. The teasing alone would probably be more than he could handle.
"Father actually replied to you?" Amenadiel asked.
"Well not in so many words," Lucifer said. "But I wouldn't be standing here right now if he hadn't. The message was clear."
"So what does father want?" Amenadiel asked.
"It seems while you were incapacitated someone escaped from hell," Lucifer answered. "I think Dad wants us to recapture the prisoner."
"Okay, well it shouldn't be too hard to track down one wayward soul," Amenadiel began, but then he turned from his drink to look at Lucifer.
The look on Lucifer's face must have given him away, because Amenadiel's next words were, "You're afraid, but nothing frightens you."
"Almost nothing," Lucifer corrected him. "And this falls into the almost category."
"But who-"
Amenadiel was interrupted by Lucifer's cell phone ringing. Pulling out his phone, Lucifer saw who it was and answered it.
"Is it later?" Chloe asked.
"Hello to you too, Detective," Lucifer said cherrily.
"Yes, okay, hello," Chloe sighed. "Can you please explain?"
"What about the offspring?" Lucifer asked.
"She's with her father," Chloe said.
"Very well then, Detective," Lucifer said. "Why don't you come over and I can tell you and Amenadiel at once."
"On my way," Chloe said, then hung up the phone.
"Right. You'll have to wait now," Lucifer told his brother. "The Detective's on her way and I'd rather not repeat myself. How about another drink?"
"Enough about the Detective!" Amenadiel exclaimed, getting to his feet. "Everything is always 'the Detective this' and 'the Detective that!' She's human! She shouldn't even know, let alone be included!"
"Oh my," Lucifer chuckled. "It seems I've struck a nerve."
"You're the Devil," Amenadiel said. "Why are you treating this human like she's one of us?"
"Some humans are special," Lucifer told his brother. "And if you played time at their speed for a moment you'd know that."
"No, it's more than just humans," Amenadiel argued. "It's this human."
Lucifer just shrugged. He himself didn't even understand why Chloe was so important, all he knew was that she was.
"The Devil shouldn't care," Amenadiel reminded him.
"Now you sound like Maze," Lucifer whined. "Maybe it's a sign you two are meant for each other." Lucifer laughed. He would never get tired of teasing his brother about his dalliance with a demon. Oh how the mighty have fallen.
"Oh shut up," Amenadiel grumbled.
It wasn't long before they heard the elevator door open. Lucifer turned to see the Detective walk out. Lucifer greeted her cheerfully, but she seemed all together in too serious a mood for humor.
"You promised to explain," Chloe reminded him.
"And that I will, Detective," Lucifer sighed. "Where would you like me to start?"
"I saw Malcolm kill you," Chloe stated. "Like kill you, kill you, so how are you," she gestured to him and added, "alive?"
"I made a deal with Dad," Lucifer replied. "Didn't actually expect praying to work, but it turns out God is watching after all."
"But the coin disappeared?" Chloe continued. "Couldn't it have been the coin that saved you?"
"Ah but who put the coin in my pocket?" Lucifer grinned.
"Our Father words in subtle ways," Amenadiel added.
"No kidding," Chloe scoffed. "So subtle you can't even be sure why you survived a fatal gunshot wound. Was it because Malcolm broke a deal with the Devil, or because the Devil prayed? Way to be specific, Dad." Lucifer felt a sudden rush of admiration for the Detective's beautiful use of sarcasm in relation to his Father.
"Skeptic!" Amenadiel accused.
"Name calling isn't nice," Lucifer lectured his brother.
"But I know all this," Amenadiel continued frustrated. "Who escaped hell!? Tell me brother?"
"That was Malcolm," Chloe said slowly, as if talking to a dim person. Lucifer couldn't help but laugh a little. "And it was because of you, or did that knife wound affect your memory?"
"Sorry Detective, but that information is a bit out of date," Lucifer continued. Chloe just turned to him, her eyes staring accusingly, and Lucifer's laugh died.
"When Malcolm killed me for a moment I went back to hell," Lucifer explained to the Detective rather than face her wrath. "And while I was there I noticed a cell door that should never have been opened suddenly... well... open."
"What cell was it?" Chloe asked. "Who escaped?"
"Mum," Lucifer said.
"Wait, your mother was in hell?" Chloe said, clearly shocked by the information. She even laughed in that way she did when it was almost a snort.
"This is bad," Amenadiel said, in his deadly serious voice.
"Oh come on," Chloe chuckled. "Worse than Malcolm? I mean she's your mother."
"Yes, who's son ruled over her prison for countless eons without ever visiting her," Lucifer pitched in.
"Okay yes, that's a bit rude," Chloe agreed. "Why didn't you visit?"
"She just stood by and did nothing when Dad kicked me out of heaven," Lucifer explained. "So I returned the favour when he finally kicked her out."
"By doing nothing?" Chloe asked.
"That's right," Lucifer confirmed.
"Wow. It's a good thing you're in therapy," Chloe smiled, again with a hint of laughter in her voice. "Because it sounds to me like the first family in the history of time has some major issues to work through."
"Will you please take this seriously!?" Amenadiel snapped.
Chloe sighed. "You guys wouldn't know this because you aren't parents," she said more calmly, with confidence. "But mom's kinda love their kids no matter what. I'm sure she isn't here to hurt you."
"Well, I'm sure my mom is here to kill me," Lucifer replied. "I kept her prisoner for thousands of years, and she isn't the forgiving type."
"If you guys want to look for her, heaven knows I can't stop you," Chloe began. "But don't be surprised when it turns out differently than you think it will. Anyway thanks for at least keeping me in the loop, but I gotta get back to Trixie."
With that the Detective got up and headed towards the Elevator, leaving Lucifer feeling all together more confused than before.
I've noticed a decline in the number of reviews lately... I was going to hold this chapter for a few more days out of spit like a petty writer but I changed my mind. I am really enjoying writing this story even if I don't get the joy of hearing what my readers think of it. Besides for once I'm not crazy ahead on chapters since the next chapter is only just started so maybe there will be a bit of a slow down in chapters without me being petty about it. ^_^
What can I say writers are needy creatures. Its just such a rush to open my email and see a new review from a reader. I've been checking my email hourly for weeks now. It's quite possible I'm addicted to them! lol. So give me a fix and let me know what you thought of my version of the season 1 of Lucifer finale with Chloe in the know.
Sneak Peek Ch22
"I take it that's a no then?" Lucifer inquired.
Chloe just rolled her eyes at him and started moving again.
"How's looking for your mother going?" Chloe asked once they both started walking.
"Not so good," Lucifer replied. "Amenadiel and I checked every recently deceased and brought back to life human we could find and nothing."
"You know they say when you stop looking for something is when you are most likely to find it," Chloe chuckled.
"Yes, well in this case I can't afford to do that," Lucifer replied. "I need to find her before the bodies start piling up."
It was then that they turned and the crime scene came into view. The deceased woman was on the mary-go-round with two spikes of metal in her forehead made to look like horns.
"See, Detective!" Lucifer said.
