By the time Lucifer stopped fighting with Amenadiel, Chloe was gone. Instantly panicking, he ran after her... or at least he tried. Lucifer had gotten all the way to the precinct when he remembered that wasn't where Chloe was headed. Changing directions, he headed to Chloe's place. It wasn't until he parked the car that he remembered she'd moved.
Lucifer arrived at Chloe's new apartment feeling like he'd driven all over LA to get here. Oh how he wished he hadn't let Amenadiel get to him. If Lucifer hadn't gotten caught up in his brotherly drama then Chloe wouldn't have gone so long unprotected.
Feeling rather unworthy of her company, but determined to inflict his on her either way, Lucifer knocked on Chloe's door.
"If that's you Lucifer then you're early," Chloe called through the door. "I'm not in danger for like another twenty-four hours."
"Twenty hours actually," Lucifer called back through the door.
"Oh my god," Chloe groaned as the door opened.
"Yes he is the root of the problem here," Lucifer replied.
"You know what? No, he's not," Chloe snapped. "You are!"
Lucifer coiled back. He felt her words more than he'd felt his brother's fists a few hours ago. He had no idea how mere words could hurt so badly.
"I didn't ask to have the Devil take an interest in my life," Chloe continued, her voice full of anger. "I didn't ask for him to do stupid things to try and save my life! I don't want any of this! I am just a person, Lucifer. A regular person and I want a regular life without crazy powerful beings coming up from hell or down from heaven to ruin or take my life." She paused for a breath then continued. "The least you can do is let me have my last few hours in peace!"
Lucifer didn't have words to speak. He'd never in his life felt so small. With a slight bow of his head, Lucifer backed away. Upon returning to his car, Lucifer could feel his eyes pool with liquid. He blinked to try and clear his vision. Once he could see again, Lucifer started his car and headed home.
She was right. This was his fault and he had to fix it. There had to be a way to save them both. There just had to be. Lucifer refused to believe that it was just his mother's freedom or Chloe's life. That was unacceptable!
Just as the Detective pointed out at the start, Dad hadn't actually said anything. He'd simply shown Lucifer an open door and then the coin had taken him back to earth. Those were the facts. Everything else was open to interpretation.
Maybe that was it. Uriel didn't know what Dad wanted anymore than Lucifer did. All Lucifer had to do was make him see that too. Then again, with Uriel's power he probably already knew everything Lucifer was going to say. Still it was something to try at least. His only other option was to stay by Chloe's side for the foreseeable future trying to save her from an infinite amount of danger. Lucifer could see that working for a while, but not long enough.
Lucifer was drinking his third bourbon, when his mother walked into the penthouse. She said she was going to let Uriel take her back to hell. Lucifer didn't understand why until Maze appeared. This explained where Maze had run off to earlier today.
Maze wanted to protect Chloe. Lucifer did too, so he could appreciate that. Mother just felt it was her job to help Lucifer keep his deal, but they were both wrong. Lucifer couldn't help but vent a little at them. They thought they knew what Father wanted, but no one actually did! Not Amenadiel when he tried to get Lucifer back to hell, and not Uriel now. Not even the humans knew what God wanted, though that never stops them from fighting about it.
"Nobody bloody knows because the selfish bastard won't just tell us!" Lucifer yelled up at the heavens. "I'm sick of it!"
His mother tried to console him, calling him Lightbringer and Morningstar. Lucifer paid her no mind, until she started talking about Uriel as a child. He'd always been stubborn and Mother believed Uriel would not give up until he had her or the Detective.
"I refuse to believe that," Lucifer told her. "There is always another way."
"If anyone can find it," the Goddess replied. "It's you."
Lucifer couldn't explain what his mother's faith meant to him. It felt warm. She believed he had what it took to solve this problem, and that gave Lucifer strength.
It came down to this: Lucifer had to meet with Uriel. Best to do it now, before the time was up. That way if it didn't work, Lucifer would still have a chance to think of something else. He would find a way to fix this, because Lucifer couldn't lose Chloe and he was just starting to get to know his mother again.
And that was how Lucifer found himself in a stuffy old church with his hands held in prayer. Prayer was the fastest and easiest way to get in touch with one of his siblings, and sure enough Uriel arrived within moments.
Lucifer hoped he could reason with his brother, and for a moment he thought he'd succeeded when Uriel said he didn't actually care what father wanted. He was rather more worried that Mother would make her way back to heaven where Father would forgive her.
"He would never do that," Lucifer argued.
"Why not?" Uriel replied. "You did. She's barely back and you're already defending her. Dad will do the same. He'll let his guard down and she'll destroy him."
Lucifer was about to open his mouth to make another argument when Uriel pulled something out from behind his back. Once Lucifer realized what it was, everything changed.
"I need to make sure that doesn't happen," Uriel said, holding the only weapon in existence that could permanently erase an immortal.
"That's Azrael's blade," Lucifer said, stunned. "How do you have it?"
"Borrowed it off the Angel of Death when she wasn't looking."
"You're not planning on taking mom back to hell," Lucifer almost whispered. He could hardly believe his brother was capable of such a plan, let alone it's execution. Because that's what this would be, an execution if he gave Uriel their mother.
His brother had gone insane. There was no other explanation for it. Such extreme action over such a worry as forgiveness. It seemed so wrong.
Uriel didn't care about his deal, or Chloe, or anything. He didn't care who he hurt so long as he got what he wanted. Uriel's real goal was to destroy their mother. Being mad at her was one thing, but this!?
Lucifer was suddenly at a loss of what to do next. His initial plan of convincing Uriel this wasn't what dad wanted had very clearly failed.
"I don't care about your little human but it's obvious you care just a tad more for her than you do for mom," Uriel continued as he walked backwards towards an old piano in the corner of the church. "Now all I need to do is hit this one little key here, right here." He had his fingers hovering over the key now, and Lucifer's heart was pounding. "A sequence will begin and two days from now your cute little human will finally die."
This couldn't be happening. Lucifer wanted to wake up from this dream now. Chloe couldn't die. She just couldn't.
"So Lucifer you can either let that happen or give me mom," Uriel finished his threat.
Lucifer wished he could be less predictable, but he just couldn't. Moving forward he grabbed Uriel's hand and said what Uriel wanted to hear, but then he punched his brother in the face.
The fighting escalated. Lucifer was so busy keeping pace that he almost didn't notice that it hurt less than he'd expected. Hadn't his fight with Amenadiel stung more? He hadn't had time to dwell on it however while they fought.
Even if the choice was now life or death for both parties Lucifer's answer hadn't changed. He wouldn't say it out loud, but Lucifer knew who he would choose if it really came down to it, and so, it seemed, did Uriel. He felt guilty for knowing he could pick, especially since Chloe's death would mean her soul's survival while the same couldn't be said for his mother.
Lucifer didn't want to make the choice. He didn't want to lose anyone. Before he condemned his mother to a fate worse than death, he would do all he could to save them both. Which meant trying to best his brother in physical combat. Maybe if he could win, everything would be alright.
For a while there it felt like he was winning, and then suddenly he wasn't. Uriel had figured out his pattern and the tides turned.
Lucifer had been thrown across the room, landing in the benches which were reduced to a pile of broken wood. He had to get up, had to keep fighting, but he didn't have the strength.
"You're lucky I'd never use Azrael's blade on you brother," Uriel said. It was true. Uriel had put the blade back into the sheath on his back after Lucifer's first punch. Even so, that didn't help Lucifer save his mother or Chloe.
Just then Maze appeared as if from nowhere though Lucifer suspected she'd dropped in from the ceiling. Either way he was thankful for the backup. Maze's arrival gave him time to think and get back on his feet. It was clear in just seconds that Uriel's qualms about using the blade did not apply to a daughter of Lilith. The blade was once more back in his hand.
As Lucifer would expect, Maze held her own quite well, that is at first. By the time he was on his feet again Maze was losing ground. Uriel had figured out her pattern the same as with him. How do you beat someone who can predict your every move?
Looking around as if for ideas, Lucifer realized Maze had knocked the blade out of Uriel's hand. Turning again he saw Maze herself get knocked to the ground and stop moving.
That was it. If something wasn't done Maze and Chloe were both dead and then his mother would follow.
Reacting rather than thinking, Lucifer moved to pick the blade up off the floor and ran forward very quickly. Between one heartbeat and another, Lucifer plunged the immortal blade into his brother's chest.
"I didn't see that coming," Uriel said as he fell to the ground in Lucifer's arms.
With his last breath Uriel reached up and pulled on Lucifer's collar then whispered in his ear: "The piece is here." Then he fell back, motionless, his soul gone forever.
Lucifer didn't understand the meaning of his brother's last words. His mind was too overwhelmed with what he'd just done to even process them.
"Prick got what he deserved," Maze said. She was standing again, a few feet behind Lucifer.
"He was my brother," Lucifer said, his voice shaking.
Lifting his hands up, Lucifer noticed they were shaking too, and covered in his brother's blood.
He wasn't sure how long he just sat here, staring at what he'd done. Lucifer could hardly form a thought; his emotions were overwhelming him. The blood on his hands in particular felt like it would never come off. It was like the blood was staining his soul.
It was Maze who snapped him out of it, reminding him that they had to hide the body somewhere since a celestial's body didn't rot and shouldn't be found by humans.
Lucifer wasn't really sure what happened over the next few hours. He felt fairly certain Maze helped him hide the body and tidy up, but his mind wasn't really tuned in.
It had likely been quite a few hours before Lucifer became aware enough to remember that Chloe was currently hiding in her house scared for her life. He should really tell her she was okay now. Even if Lucifer might never forgive himself for what he'd done, at least Chloe was safe now.
He must have driven to Chloe's though he couldn't quite remember the trip. Getting out of the car, Lucifer knew he didn't look presentable, but this wouldn't take long.
It was late, very late, and Lucifer knew Chloe should be asleep but suspected she wasn't. If she was, he'd just leave a note or something.
Standing outside the door, Lucifer was about to knock when he remembered what she'd said the last time he'd seen her. Maybe she didn't want to see him. Maybe he should have just texted her so she could read it in the morning. Yeah that was a better idea. Lucifer backed away slowly and then got into his car. Why had he come here?
His vision was blurring again. Lucifer blinked until it cleared then got out his phone. Lucifer sent a short text message explaining that it was fine and she was safe but without giving details. Then he started his car and went home. Chloe wanted space, and space he would give her.
When Lucifer walked off the elevator and into his penthouse, Mother was there. She could see the blood on him and asked at once where Uriel was. Lucifer didn't have to say anything to see understanding on his mother's face, but even as she sobbed she comforted him. Lucifer wasn't sure if he deserved it.
Not sure why but I really got stuck on this chapter hence why I haven't updated in so long. I just couldn't figure out how I wanted it to go. Not much really was gonna change from the show but I didn't just want to skip the whole thing because that would make this story feel very choppy which I have been trying to avoid by smoothing over and summing up the canon scenes. In the end I choice to basically do the whole scene from just Lucifer's thoughts with only a bit of dialogue. The fight and what they are saying is all in the episode so I didn't want to show it again, but at least Lucifer's thoughts will feel a little new-ish.
Also I started another story for the fandom Merlin so if you like that show please check if out. :) Thanks.
Sneak Peek Chapter 32
She turned her attention to the scene. The bride was shot dead center while the groom only got grazed in the arm. What kind of marksmen botches the first show and aces the second. Dan suggested that the bride was the target and the groom just got in the way. Chloe went to interview the groom next. He wasn't much help and clearly still in shock. There were a few more people to interview that didn't get her any leads.
Chloe couldn't help but wonder if maybe she'd have found something else if Lucifer was here. Despite everything the Devil did have a knack for finding things others missed.
When she interviewed the bridesmaids, Chloe got the sense that they were all being totally honest. She couldn't help but think Lucifer could get the truth out of them with that desire trick of his.
The question was where had the Devil gone?
She tried calling again, but only got voicemail. By the time lunch came and went Chloe decided she needed to take more direct action.
"I'm going to go check on Lucifer," Chloe told Dan. "Can you hold down the fort for a bit."
"Sure though I don't see why you bother with that guy," Dan shrugged.
"It just isn't like him to totally disappear like this. He's more the annoyingly present type," Chloe explained.
