Narrator/Third Person's P.O.V.
10:30 pm.
The silent starry night came.
People were beginning to hit the hay as the clock ticked, but the agency didn't seem to rest. The organization doubled its security measures, more agents guarded each floor and more cameras came into play. They held weapons in their hands, armed and ready to strike at any time.
However, it didn't stop the girls from saving the prisoners.
In their own rooms, they already turned off the light, pretending to sleep if ever their roommates were to check up on them. They had to come up with a plan. Instead of using their compacts, the girls turned on their ICED earpiece as their means of contacting each other.
"What are we going to do now?" Bright asked, her voice soft and low.
Rustling noise came from the device. "The agency's still on high alert, but we can't keep waiting so we need to think of a way to compromise." Bloom answered. "Did you guys get any useful information?"
"I was able to go to the dungeon with Butch a few days ago." Butterfly replied, shifting around in her bed a little bit. "I'll be able to teleport us into the room that leads to it, but with those new power-cancelling machines in place, there's only one way out."
"Any cameras?"
Butterfly nodded. "Yeah, a bunch, so we'll need to use the EMPs just like usual."
"Then that means we have to find what causes our powers to falter if we want to teleport the prisoners out of that place. But besides that, what about you, Miyako?"
Bright laughed nervously on the other end. "Uh… negative?"
Both Butterfly and Bloom simultaneously sighed at her reply. "Anything happened between you and Boomer?" Butterfly asked.
"I'd rather not talk about it…" Bright replied, "It's complicated."
"Well then…" Bloom started, not wanting to meddle in things that weren't her business. "We've got the entrance and exit route done, what about security, Kaoru?"
Butterfly's face suddenly seemed a bit worried. "Yeah… It's going to be tough."
"How hard, exactly?"
"Very." Butterfly answered. "Each cell contains at least one agent that's guarding it, and there are more than ten people guarding both the entrance and the exit. Doesn't seem like the agents have any special powers, but they're heavily armed."
"That is… a really tough security to pass through."
"Well, we are holding back for a few days right?" Bright asked, her mood becoming a bit more positive. "Maybe we'll find a solution once we give it time."
Bloom immediately interrupted her statement, "No." She said, "We won't be wasting any time now. We'll be attacking tonight."
The raven-haired girl almost jumped up from her bed, seemingly confused. "Tonight? Are you asking for a death wish?"
"We don't have that much time left, guys. Every second counts." Bloom explained. "I thought investigations would die down if we were to lay low, but I have a feeling that it won't go that way. The more we do nothing, the more that those people are going to suffer under the hands of this organization. And it's still going to be that way if we sit back and wait. Do you guys want that?"
Both girls remained silent for a while, taking in the words of their leader. It was going to be a huge risk, but if they wanted to get to the bottom of this organization's plans, they had to strike. Time will only tell what would be the aftermath of this sudden plan.
But they have to keep moving.
"What do we have to do then?" Bright asked, her voice now turning serious.
"It's not going to be easy, but we have to make use of your invisibility powers, Miyako." Bloom replied. "We'll have to have a silent approach when knocking out those guards, though. Our stealth training will be useful, but it won't be enough. Do any of you have things or gadgets that can help us?"
Bright thought about it for a second before finally getting an idea. "Have you guys been working on your aim lately?"
Both girls were confused at her notion. "Why do you ask?" Butterfly wondered.
"It'll be easier to knock out the agents with my senbon needles and the poison I've made." Bright explained. "It's small and it's harder for them to dodge or see it, especially in that dungeon. If we use these in the dungeon, then we'll have no problem in getting those agents by surprise."
"I mean, it's not a bad idea." Butterfly commented, seemingly interested in the plan. "We have to be very quick though. That and we have to do this individually if we want to get all of them in less than an hour."
Bloom sighed. "Plus, it can't be that easy to take out so many agents at once. And we have to transport those prisoners to the Professor once we do get them."
"We circled the dungeon when we were down there and I was able to find a blind spot." Butterfly said, "We'll take the agents down there first and that will be the place where we'll temporarily place the prisoners."
"If that's the case, Miyako will knock those guards there while Kaoru and I will distract the guards guarding the entrance so you can go through." Bloom stated, beginning to devise a plan. "We'll all have a few needles and poison with us just in case we need it. Our main objective is to get rid of security first before anything else."
Both Butterfly and Bright agreed, taking note of their roles in the mission. "Understood." They replied.
"Were you able to estimate how many prisoners are down there, Kaoru?"
"Unfortunately, yes, and it was just fucked up seeing those people there." Butterfly said, sighing. "But anyways, there are about less than a hundred people there. A lot of twists and turns on both the west and east side of the dungeon."
Bloom stayed silent for a while, thinking intently. "Okay, before I tell you guys what to do, where's the exit located?"
"On the west end, there's a hidden exit." Butterfly said. "The only problem is that it leads to the main lobby, but we don't have any other choice."
"Hmm…" Bloom said, thinking. "If that's the case, we'll just use Bright's invisibility to get through. But if we are able to find the source that causes your teleportation powers to weaken, then the better for us. Besides that, we'll have Miyako go through the tunnels first to the blind spot. Once Kaoru and I take out the guards at the entrance point, we'll divide ourselves in rescuing the prisoners."
The green-eyed girl smirked in her place. "Seems easy enough."
"What time do we go?" Bright asked, still a bit nervous.
"We'll go around 12 or 1 am. And girls, let me make this clear," Bloom started, the tone of her voice becoming more and more serious. "Tonight, we're going all out. I expect that this will be done in no more than an hour. Understood?"
"Yes."
Bloom chuckled. "Good. Butterfly, pick us up early okay? We need to prepare first before anything else."
Said girl smirked, already getting out of her bed. "Got it, boss."
"Okay then, I'll get ready first. Talk to you guys later." Bright replied, almost turning off her device when suddenly Bloom exclaimed.
"Wait!"
Butterfly winced a bit by the sudden pitch of her voice, a soft ringing sound echoed in her ear. "Is something wrong?"
Bloom mumbled for a bit before talking, "I've been thinking…"
"About?"
"Well, it's just that the people here, they're not exactly as bad as I thought they would be…" Bloom said, softly. "It just doesn't seem fair to me. Don't you think they should be given… you know… another chance?"
Bright and Butterfly were taken aback, remaining silent from the shock. They were unsure by their leader's question, not knowing if she was serious or not. Bloom was the one who seemed the most determined in doing this mission that the Professor gave to them, the one that had no hesitation when he said we had to destroy the organization.
But the more they thought about it, the more they were beginning to understand Bloom's proposal.
They stayed here for almost a month now. They've done different actions of deception to convince the agents here that they were evil, including their old enemies. At some point in their stay, they were able to at least talk to some of them.
Especially their counterparts.
"Girls?"
"I… I don't know, Momoko." Bright replied. "I mean, I get what you're trying to say, but would the Professor approve of this? Our superiors? We can't exactly do what we want when we want it."
Butterfly grunted, "We're not exactly the boss here, but it's worth a try to negotiate with our division."
"I've been deciding on doing that, I just wanted to know if you girls agree with me."
"Momoko, you know that if it means giving everyone a better life you know we're down for it." Bright replied. "But if they're not willing to cooperate or even change for that matter, then I don't know if there's anything more we can do…"
Bloom remained silent for a while, before letting out a sigh of frustration, "You're right…"
"We'll figure out what's going on, Momoko, then we can do something about this." Butterfly replied, trying to comfort her. "For now, we have to focus on what we're doing tonight. It's already 11:30, you guys get ready."
"On it."
Midnight came fast.
The girls were setting up their gear as they fixed their clothes. Carefully fixing their bed in a way that seemed like they were sleeping, the girls peeked in the rooms of their roommates. Fortunately for them, the lights were out. The faint sound of their snoring meant that they were in the clear.
Butterfly first teleported to Bright's room, grabbing her arm immediately as they went to Bloom. The sudden noise behind her made the red-headed girl look over her shoulder. There she saw her two teammates as they walked towards her.
"You guys got what you need?" Bloom asked, whispering.
Bright patted the small black pocket she had hanging from the side of her hip. "I've got all of my needles for you guys to use." Bright said, opening the small compartment as she took out a few along with two vials filled with the same dark plum liquid.
"Remember that just a small amount of this stuff will knock out the guards immediately, so try not to waste any of it." As she explained, she handed out ten needles and one vial to each of them. "Just make sure you hit them near or at the jugular vein itself for the best results.
"The poison will only last for about an hour. Once we exceed that time limit, the guards will start to come to. It's potent enough to induce memory loss too, which means they won't even remember fainting once they regain consciousness."
Butterfly looked at her suspiciously. "Am I allowed to ask how you made this? If I can recall, you only had a limited stock."
"I might have stolen a few chemicals from the lab in the agency, but that's not important right now."
Butterfly chuckled in response, amused by her friend's actions. "Who knew sunshine over here had it in her?"
"Well, that's good but it's all the more reason why we have to work quickly on this one." Bloom said, placing the needles in the small hidden compartment of her belt. "You guys remember the plan?"
"Knock the guards out at the blind spot and the ones at the entrance first before striking the ones on the east and west wing. Get the prisoners and teleport them to the Professor before leaving." Bright replied, briefly adjusting her gloves.
Bloom smirked, grabbing Butterfly's hand, "Let's go."
The three girls warped in the secret room, the bright gold outline of the elevator glimmering despite the lack of lighting. They walked towards it, their heels lightly clicking. The doors opened slowly – the gold interior making all three of them wince in the dark.
Bloom stopped in her tracks for a second, holding out her arm to prevent the two of them from entering. "You said you started to feel drained as soon as you reached the dungeon, right?"
"Yeah, why?" Butterfly asked, seemingly confused at her sudden question.
"And how long were you and Butch riding the elevator?"
"Honestly, longer than it would usually take for a trip down to only one floor." Butterfly answered, "Had to be more than a minute."
The red-haired girl thought about it for a while, moving in closer. She looked at the elevator from top to bottom. "Something tells me that what we need to find is right here…" Bloom said, smirking.
Her bright red eyes then emitted a red beam, slowly analyzing the elevator in front of her. As the beam reached midpoint, it dissipated. "Found it." Bloom said, walking towards the elevator. "Hold the doors."
Both girls were confused at first, but they followed her orders as Bloom went inside the elevator.
Bloom held the silver railings of the elevator, feeling it thoroughly. She looked up at the ceiling. The same color scheme made her chuckle. The tiny holes it had weren't enough for her to see what was behind it. She carefully flew up towards it, her X-ray vision working once again.
There, she saw a certain machine that had tubes flowing towards the railings at the sides. She held out her hand to reach out towards the railings again, feeling around it. Bloom felt a light breeze of air coming from it as she began to feel tiny holes that she hadn't noticed before. It was then and there when she realized what caused their powers to weaken.
'An odorless and colorless gas…' She thought, making her look over towards Bright and Butterfly. "Cover your nose and mouth." She said, covering her own.
Both girls did what they were asked, looking even more confused than before. "Are you done with whatever you're doing?" Butterfly asked with a muffled voice, getting impatient.
Bloom ignored her question, trying to figure out a way to stop the machine temporarily. 'There's no switch, but I think I can block the main source.'
She used her other free hand, using all her strength to open the ceiling floor. She felt a shift, her grip getting lighter as the ceiling now revealed the machine.
It looked like a simple steam engine. It was silver in color, the machine small but it had a large compartment containing a bright orange liquid that flowed through the tubes that lead to the railings. Scanning it, Bloom reached behind the machine. She felt the valve around her fingertips, immediately turning it as the breeze she felt was now gone.
Placing the ceiling cover back to its original place, she signaled the other two to enter. "That should feel better for you, Kaoru." Bloom said. "It'll be a better way of getting out of that place."
Butterfly smirked, the pair walking inside in sync, "Better for all of us."
As the doors shut, their descent began. They all stood still, a serious expression plastered on each of their angelic faces. It was silent the whole way down. It did take a long time; a tactic they used for the gas to take effect efficiently. Their hearts beat faster and faster as they went deeper and deeper down.
After a sudden halt, the doors began to slowly open.
They looked around, but no one seemed to be near where they stood. It was a short walk towards the dungeon, but they knew that the sheer number of agents may become a handful.
Before stepping out, Bloom opened the ceiling panel once again. With her hand covering her mouth, she turned the machine back on. As she put everything back in place, all three of them walked out of the elevator as its doors began to close.
They began to walk, footsteps light as they tried to muffle the sound of their clicking heels. Bloom scanned the path ahead of them. About twenty feet from where they were walking now, stood a dozen armed men at the entrance.
She held her hand up, causing both of her teammates to halt. "The entrance has twelve men on guard. My vision wasn't able to cover the whole dungeon but distracting the guard in front won't cause a commotion since the cells are further down the dungeon."
"Miyako, go to the east end, take a left, and once you get towards the end of the hall turn right." Butterfly instructed. "There are guards on each cell, but the space will be enough for you to walk past without getting noticed, just be careful with your footing."
"Got it, I'll go now, then?" Bright asked.
"Yeah, but wait for my signal first." Bloom instructed, carefully levitating herself from the ground. Butterfly followed suit, but Bright stayed where she stood as she began to fade.
The two girls slowly flew, their hands touching the ceiling as they neared the entrance. It took a few seconds before the bright flame of the torches revealed the shadows lurking within the dungeon. There was an arch just before it, which concealed their presence while also letting them have a partial but adequate view of the guards.
Just like what Bloom said, a dozen men stood there wearing dark clothing with their hands firm on large guns.
Pressing a button on her compact, the security cameras were now disabled as several EMPs were sent from it.
She then held her hand up, her other hand grabbing a needle from her pocket and dipping it into the vial. She then shot her eyes towards Butterfly. The raven-haired girl nodded, taking the needles from her pocket as she did what her leader did.
Bloom slowly flew down the side of the arch, careful not to make a sound or reveal herself. There, she was able to see the man on the far left of the line-up. It was hard to peek out, but she was still able to make out half of his physique. She wasn't certain that she would be able to hit the exact mark, but she had another idea in mind.
She looked at Butterfly who was levitating a few feet above her, the hand she held up beginning to count down. Bloom mouthed the countdown, and as she reached one, a needle flew down towards the guard on the end.
"Argh!" The man exclaimed, the needle piercing through his clothing and into the skin of his right leg. The sudden disturbance was enough for the guards to come rushing over to him. It was at that moment that Bloom, Butterfly, and even Bright threw the needles towards them.
Caught off guard, they were immediately paralyzed. It didn't take long for their bodies to become unconscious, collapsing to the floor with a thud. They stood still for a moment, waiting. As no one seemed to have heard the commotion, the girls ran towards them, taking out the needles as the purple liquid oozed from the puncture wounds.
With the needles now in her hand, Bloom looked towards Bright. "Go to the blind spot, hit anyone that notices your presence on the way and make sure that spot is clear." She explained, grabbing her blade from her belt compartment. "We'll meet you there once we're done with the others."
Bright nodded, quickly blending in with her surroundings as she flew down the tunnels.
She passed through the corridors with ease. The light gush of wind that passed by the guards as she ran didn't seem to bother them. They remained unfazed, making Bright let out a small smile.
After many turns and twists, she was finally able to reach it. It was a rather large space, but it had a long corridor that separated it from the other cells. There were still guards there, but since this area was somewhat hidden, she won't have any trouble at all.
There were three of them, each guarding three respective cells. She slowly pulled out three needles, the purple liquid already coating the tip.
"Hey, Aoi, Yuuma," The guard on the left called out, making Bright halt in her movements.
The other two looked back at him, giving a look of confusion, "What?"
"Do you guys smell…" He whispered, sniffing the air profusely. "…perfume?"
All three guards began to notice it too. A scent so sweet that battles the musky stench of the dungeon. "Where is it coming fro—"
Needles then came flying across the chamber. It didn't take long for the bodies to come falling down, limp and unconscious. With a satisfied look, Bright avoided the bodies and began to walk towards the cells.
Looking over her shoulder, no one seemed to be in sight. "Just have to get started then." She said to herself, grabbing the pin in her hair. "Hey, sweetheart, are you awake?"
Her sudden voice made the small girl in the cell stir in the middle of her sleep. She was petite, seemingly no more than eight years of age. Her figure looked worn and beaten, dirt covering her from head to toe.
"M-Mom?" The little girl whispered, eyes half-lidded. As she sighted Bright's silhouette crouching down at the bars of her cell, she immediately backed away. The more she scrambled in her place, the louder the sound of the chains scraping the ground resonated in the chamber. "G-G-Get a-away!"
Bright held her hands in defense. "Hey, it's okay." She said softly, "I'm not going to hurt you. I've come to rescue you and your friends."
The little girl tilted her head to the side, catching sight of the unconscious men that laid on the ground. She gasped. Without any more second thoughts, the little girl instantly ran towards Bright. "Get me out of here, please." She pleaded as tears began to pour down her stained face.
"I will, just promise to be quiet, okay?" Bright instructed, to which the little girl nodded in response. "Once I get you out of here, you'll help me get the other two in here, is that okay with you?"
"Yes, I'll do it." She answered, making Bright flash a sweet smile at her.
With the pin, Bright fumbled with the lock. After a few wiggling, the lock finally clicked as it loosened around the bars. "Got it." She exclaimed, quickly coming in the cell and using her pin again on the lock of the chain. Feeling it loosen again, she quickly picked up the girl.
As they got out, Bright briefly dropped the girl down on the ground. "Okay sweetie, go wake up that other girl over there while I let out this boy." She said, pointing at the cell on the far right. "Be sure to do it quietly."
"Okay." The little girl replied in a hushed tone. As she ran towards the girl, Bright quickly unlocked the cell containing the boy. She explained everything to him briefly as she picked him up too and placed him in the middle of the chamber.
Running towards the other girl prisoner—who was finally awake from her slumber—Bright started to do the same thing when she suddenly heard footsteps coming her way. "Get back!" Bright ordered, crouching down to their level while using her arm to shield the kids.
Preparing to strike, two figures suddenly ran towards them. The kids hid behind Bright's back, but she just put down her weapon and slowly stood up. "You guys got the guards down this route?"
"Yeah, it was actually easier than I thought." Butterfly said, a bit of a disappointed tone in her voice as she did. "It also seems that you've pretty much cleared this place." She added, lightly kicking the guard's legs out of her way.
"It's a relief, but it's already been almost ten minutes since we knocked down the guards out front." Bloom said, dipping more needles in the vial.
"Where do we go from here then?"
"You teleport these kids back to the professor first." Bloom ordered, gesturing to the children still hiding behind Bright. "You'll take the guards on the west end and immediately teleport the prisoners out of there. Bright and I will take care of the other prisoners here in the east end and have them here once you're done with your part."
Butterfly smirked. "On it."
With that, Bright briefly told the kids what they had to do as Bloom and Butterfly began to merge their powers together once more. She asked something to them, to which they all shook their hands. Bright gave them a reassuring smile, hugging them one last time before the bright light that was a mix of red and green enveloped the three of them. In an instant, they were gone.
Grabbing a needle from her belt, Bloom looked out through the entrance of the chamber. Along the route they took to go here, there was an intersection that had three different paths leading to it. The route they were in was the left route, while the other two lead to the west side while the other was an extension of the east side.
"You crossed the intersection on the way here, correct?" Bloom asked as Bright nodded in reply. "Take the ones here," Bloom told Bright, gesturing towards all the prisoners down one hallway before looking at Butterfly. "Clear all the people in this route, I'll help those down this way."
The girls looked at each other, giving one last nod before they all ran out of the chamber and began dashing through the different tunnels.
"Argh!" The last guard groaned in pain as he finally went down on the ground. Butterfly immediately yanked the needle out of his neck, carefully sliding it back in her belt.
As she looked at the last cell down this hallway, a middle-aged man stood there with a mixture of shock and relief painted on his face. "Oh God, please save me!"
"Don't worry sir, I'll get you out of there." Butterfly assured, quickly teleporting inside the cell. With a swing of her katana, the chain that held the men were immediately off.
"Oh, thank you, thank you!"
"Can I ask your name, sir?"
"Matsuno, Matsuno Daiki."
"Okay, Mr. Matsuno, for the meantime please keep your voice down, I'll get you out of here but you have to promise not to say anything about this place nor say anything about how you were rescued." Butterfly explained. "There will be a man that will brief you with everything you need to know."
The man nodded, "Understood."
"Now, stay still sir." She then held out her hand, her palm facing his direction. Concentrating her energy, the bright light consumed the man. It took a while, but he was finally transported out of the cell. Butterfly dropped to her knees. A single bead of sweat trickled down her face as she was beginning to feel worn out.
'Didn't expect doing this one after another would leave me this exhausted.' She thought, wiping the sweat from her face as she took a quick glimpse at her compact. A small timer on the bottom of it showed the digits 3:18 on it as it slowly began ticking down.
Using her katana to support herself, she quickly began to concentrate again. In an instant, she was teleported to their meeting point.
"Where have you been?!" Bloom exclaimed, standing up from where she sat.
In the now crowded chamber, people of all sorts stood in the middle of it as Bright and Bloom were at the entrance. There were kids, teenagers, adults, and even the elderly in the bunch. They all wore dirty rags, their faces soiled with dirt and grime, but they seemed to be calm albeit all the things happening right now.
"Do you know how hard it is to run all through those hallways, knock out every single guard, then transport each prisoner one by one?" Butterfly retorted.
Bloom just sighed, "Let's just do this."
Grabbing her friend's hand, their powers merged. They gave all of them looks of encouragement, before the light they emitted sent them off. As the aura that surrounded them emitted, Butterfly fell down to her knees once more, heavily panting.
"Kaoru!" Bloom exclaimed as both her and Bright went to her side. "You alright?"
"Yeah… it's nothing."
"Did you find K.J.?" Bloom asked, getting nervous all of a sudden.
Butterfly shook her head in disappointment, "No…"
"Shit." Bloom cursed, getting up on her feet as she scanned the hallway again. "He has got to be here somewhere."
"We've searched this place all over, there is no one with the initials K.J. nor does anyone say they have written a book about this place." Bright said, obviously just as worried as her friend. "He must have been…"
"No!" Bloom snapped, clenching her fists, "We need him, we promised to save everyone here, and I mean everyone." With that, she took out her blades, holding one in each hand.
"Where do you think you're going?!" Butterfly asked.
Bloom didn't look at her, but instead glanced at Bright who was supporting their friend. "Look after Kaoru for a while, I'll do one more check around this place." And just like that, a bright red streak was all that was left as Bloom began flying through the chamber.
She could hear the profanities that Butterfly was screaming from the chamber, but she didn't mind it as she zipped through the tunnels.
'There are no more prisoners this way.' She thought, scanning at the empty cells in her path. 'He might be over there.'
Flying towards the west end, she hoped to have seen at least one prisoner that Butterfly missed. But as she flew past each cell, the dread she felt grew stronger and stronger. As she reached the intersection, a soft beeping was heard from her belt. She looked down, her eyes filled with horror as she saw the numbers on her timer reading '0:00.'
She looked over her shoulder. The silhouettes of the guards' bodies began to slightly move as soft moans were heard from them. "Damn it!"
Bloom immediately flew to the blind spot, grabbing Kaoru's hand. They were startled. The two of them meant to ask her what happened, but the sound of beeping they heard was all they needed.
"Hurry!"
Without hesitating, Butterfly concentrated with all the energy she had left.
The guards began to come to, but as they looked around.
All that was left was dust.
