Chapter 9: Discharge

Paramedics are ready to go, I climb in next to Jane and look at her. Bruised and bloody.

Maura POV:

The steady beeping kept me sane for a moment but I didn't start feeling okay until I felt her squeeze my hand. I look into her dark brown eyes, and she said, "I'm okay. Are you okay?" Her voice is the only thing keeping me grounded at the moment. Although my anxiety peaked seeing her faced covered in blood her reassurance made me feel so much better.

"Yes I am just fine. Anything hurt? Feel like you are injured in anyway."

"Not really no I feel pretty okay despite what just went on."

"Oh good." I squeeze the hand I am holding.

"So I heard the other driver got the wrath of Chief Medical Examiner ." She chuckles softly.

"Yes he did, I walked right up to him and honestly Jane I have no idea what came over me. I just became so enraged I started yelling at him."

"Wow so you went all badass huh?"

"Language Jane." I smile and nod at her. Then the paramedic took over checking her vitals and asking her questions. Today could have ended a lot differently.

Once we get to the hospital and they bring us both into a room, I call Angela. "Hello Maura, are you okay?"

"I am alright. Jane and I were in an accident but we are relatively okay."

"Oh dear, what hospital are you at? I'll have Frankie bring me by."

"Mass General. We are in the Emergency Room. If anyone gives you any problems just tell them who I am."

"Okay Sweetie I should be there soon. Tell Jane that I love her. And I love you as well."

"I will Angela and I love you also."

I get off the phone as they are wheeling Jane back in the room from her CAT Scan. I help her into her bed and step out with the doctor. "Is she okay?"

"Yes there was a slight hematoma to the Zygomatic and the blood is from a reinjured hairline fracture along the nasal bone. No concussion and no other reports of pain so once we prescribe medicine and then get you checked out, you'll both be able to go."

"I am fine , I have a small laceration along the Sphenoid but they cleaned out the glass. I am in no pain."

"I understand but Detective Rizzoli asked me to check you out anyway, and I don't think you'd want to upset her." The young doctor winks at me.

"You're right, let me just talk to her and I'll be ready to be examined."

I walk back into the hospital room, and she is sitting up grinning at me. "What are you smiling at, Detective?"

"You, I love it when my comes out."

"I know you do honey. I spoke with your mother and she is having Frankie bring her here. They should be here soon. I heard what you said to and I appreciate your concern."

"I promised to always take care of you, and that is making sure you are physically okay."

"I am because you protected me. I didn't even realize what was happening before the crash but before impact I felt you wrap your arms around me to hold me to you."

"Yes I did because that kept both of our heads protected, so the only injuries to our heads would be from where my hard head hit your hard head."

"Good thinking. Thank you Jane. I love you." I hear a nurse knock quietly and peek through the curtain.

"I love you too Maura, now I think their here for you. Kiss me before you go." I laugh and lean over her bed railing to kiss her. The nurse brings me to a CAT Scan room as well just to make sure everything is alright.

JANE POV:

I hear a knock on the door. Ma and Frankie walk in. "Oh Jane I am so glad you're okay."

"Thanks Ma, hey little brother."

"Hey Teflon."

"Teflon?"

"Yes referring to someone able to withstand a lot with no apparent effect."

"I know what it means chucklehead. Where did you learn it?"

"Word of the Day App, Korsak and I are in a competition in how many days we can use the word of the day in a conversation."

"How incredibly studious of you." Ma says to him.

"What's the bet?" I know they aren't being studious.

"The loser who doesn't find a way to use their word one day, has to spend a week as a flour baby daddy whenever at the ranch." Frankie laughs.

"Ooh nice." I high five him. We continue to talk. I explained how the accident happened. Maura comes back into the room and I smile at her.

Frankie and Ma both hug her. "Wait but what were you doing coming back from Newton?"

"So we were supposed to tell everyone on Sunday during dinner but Jane and I bought a property out in Newton."

"Really, so does this mean my two girls are finally together?" Ma questions.

"Yes Ma, and we are building our home from the ground up so we went to look at a lovely plot of land, which the paperwork is being filled out currently that we own. It is 11.07 Acres."

"Wow that is big. Jane what are you doing with your apartment?" She asks me interested.

"Well since I own it. I was thinking about selling it but then I thought that Tommy could move in and it would help him stay on the right track."

"You are such a good daughter. Maura sweetie what about the house?" Ma asks concerned.

"Well I was thinking that you could move into the main house and the guesthouse can go back to being a guesthouse." Maura tells her.

"You mean you are selling it?"

"No Angela we love that house and I know you love the guesthouse so I thought this to be the best option." She jumps up and hugs Maura tightly.

"Ma be careful I don't know if she is in any pain."

"Oops sorry Maura."

"It is alright Angela. I am feeling fine. Which by the way, should be coming in to discharge us soon. Frankie do you think that you can drop Jane and I off at my house."

"Of course Maura. I am really glad you guys are okay."

"Thank you Frankie." We all talk some more and then one of the nurses walks in. She hands paperwork to Maura regarding our discharge plans and medications. Frankie and Ma both go out to let me get dressed. I pull Maura into me and she wraps her arms around my neck. I wrap my arm around her waist and kiss her forehead, she giggles. "What?"

"No one ever hugs me and kisses my forehead."

"I just did love."

"I know and it made me feel like a princess."

"You are a princess, my princess." She kisses me and releases me so I can get dressed.

I finally get dressed and as we are walking out I take Maura's hand into my own. "Let's go home." I whisper to her.

"Home, I like that Jane."

The ride back was pleasantly uneventful and I was content with just going upstairs to nap with Maura. Frankie pulled into the driveway, I immediately noticed something was off. Maura's front door is open. "Maura. Ma. Stay in the car. Frankie take the side door. I'll go in through the front."

"Be careful." Maura says to me. I get out of the car silently and draw my weapon. I creep near the door and when I hear Frankie enter so do I weapon trained on the individual standing in the living room. "Boston Police hands up."

I walk him outside and Maura gets out of the car. I hear him say to her. "Can you please tell this lady to uncuff me?"

"Ian?" Maura says, and everything clicked.
