Soon the TVs in the hospital lobby showed Nomu-like creatures crawling on buildings or flying by, then Endeavor appeared and battled against the one crawling on the walls.
"Toxic Phantom, Uravity." Gunhead pulled their attention away from the action. "Come here for a moment." He waved them down to where he was with the U.S. Marine from earlier.
"Yes, sir?" Dokusei asked as they got closer.
"This young man here is related to the girl we faced." The Marine was tall, in his early twenties, in his dress blues uniform. "He would like to say something to you two."
Adam, Dokusei remembered, stood in salute. "Thank you for saving sister and helping her see big brother again!" He had tears in his eyes, and his Japanese was broken up because of the emotions he fought to control.
Dokusei smiled at him and bowed to him. "I am happy to see her back with her family as safe as possible," he replied in English. This shocked everyone around him.
"I didn't know you spoke English!?" Ochako nearly shouted. He kept forgetting not everyone had a half American mom…
Adam smiled and returned the bow. "Gunhead said you wanted to see how she was doing?" He wiped away his tears as he spoke in his native tongue, trying to calm down.
"Yes, I would very much like to." Dokusei looked back with worry.
"I'll get you through." Adam switched back to Japanese and spoke much cleaner. He walked down to a nurse station that led to the ICU with the heroes following close behind.
After a few quick words the nurse allowed them to pass. The girl's room was about half way down a hallway when they found it. She was asleep, bandages covered every visible inch of her except her face, and had an oxygen mask on her. If it wasn't for the bandages and mask, she would look like she was in a peaceful slumber.
Dokusei looked to Adam, "We never got her name," he quietly whispered.
Adam simply smiled. "Her name is Cheyenne Naamah." He looked back to his sister. "She was kidnapped about two or three years ago. I've been looking for her ever since." He looked back to the heroes. "I can not thank you enough. You did something a lot of people wouldn't have been able to do, if... if..." He put a hand over his mouth, breaking any chance to finish his sentence.
Gunhead put his hand on the Marine's shoulder. "It's ok, son, you don't have to say any more."
Dokusei looked at Cheyenne wondering why she was still unconscious. "Is... is my toxin having a negative effect on her?"
Adam shook his head no. "No, she was used as a form of human drug trafficking; there was a lot of crap in her body. The doctors are trying to flush her system, but with her quirk, it's going to take longer than normal."
"What do you mean?" Ochako chimed in.
"Out of all our family, she's the only one that got a quirk, and it's very powerful. Almost like it has a mind of its own..." He shook his head, like getting rid of a bad memory. "Anyway, it's keeping her asleep."
"It doesn't help that the collar she had on was filled with Trigger, so with how strong her quirk is already, you can imagine how bad it was when she had even more power going through her." Gunhead crossed his arms, grunting a bit.
"It's amazing she's alive at all..." Ochako stared in wonder.
"She's our little devil." Adam smiled. "She'll get back up from this. I'm sure of it."
Gunhead put his hands on the two students' shoulders. "Well, it's about time we head back to the agency. I got a report to fill out and I think our little heroes-to-be would like some rest."
With that, they both realized just how exhausted they felt. Dokusei rubbed his eyes as he brought his mask off his neck. Ochako gave them a sleepy smile.
They said their goodbyes and when they finally made it back to their room, it was getting pretty late. Dokusei made the mistake of turning on the TV. It showed the noseless face of the Hero Killer, screaming about an unjust world and daring anybody to try and kill him, claiming the only one who could was All Might.
Dokusei turned off the TV quickly after that. "Well I'm definitely not sleeping anytime soon..."
"Deku was behind him..." Ochako was shaking a bit; even through the screen they could feel the intimidating aura he gave off.
"I'm surprised they're alive..." He got up and grabbed his sleep clothes. "Did you see Iida there?"
"Yeah..."
"Damnit..." was all Dokusei said before he took a quick shower. After he was out he stood in front of the mirror, brushing his teeth. "I'll kill any phony in my crusade against this unjust world!" The Hero Killer's words bounced around in his head like someone was playing tennis in there. "Am I a hero...?" He looked at himself, "or just a fake playing a hero...?" He shook his head as best he could before finishing up.
"Hey, sorry I took longer than-" He opened the door; just to quickly close it. "SORRY, I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING!"
Ochako was taking off her bra as Dokusei walked in; it was a good thing she had her back to the door. "I-I-I have a shirt on!" She quickly put her shirt back on, hiding anything that could cause nosebleeds.
"Are you sure!?"
"Yes!"
Dokusei opened the door but had his hand over his eyes. "I'm not looking; I'll just go to my side of the room..." He began to slowly make his way to his bed. Once he was sure he was there he opened up his eyes and pulled out the divider fully. He then let out a sigh that turned into a defeated laugh. "Mina is going to kill me..." he muttered as he sat down on his bed.
"No, she's not." Ochako popped her head around. Dokusei froze up for a second, but seeing she was in her sleep wear, he gladly let out a sigh. "You ok?" She took a seat next to him. "You seem a bit stressed."
He ran his hands through his damp hair. "I... I guess you could say that... today has been a day..." He then felt arms wrap around his midsection and a head rest on his shoulder. "What are you doing?" he kindly asked as he straightened up.
"It's called a hug; you gave me one last week," she replied, not letting go.
"I know that." He smiled a bit. "I meant, why are you doing this?"
"You looked like you needed one..." she mumbled.
"Ah." He wrapped an arm around her shoulder and returned the hug. He broke it after about a minute, and gave her some room on the bed.
"Do you want to talk about it?" She tilted her head to the side.
Dokusei let out a long sigh. "It's about what The Hero Killer said... I can't get what he said about fake heroes out of my head..." He looked at his claws, he could do so much damage on accident and even more so on purpose. "Am I a real hero or a fake, phony, as he calls them..."
"Do you want to save people?" Ochako asked.
"Yes," he answered without hesitation. "But that's not my main motivation." He leaned forward onto his knees.
"Then what is?" She put a hand on his back, unknowingly drawing circles.
"Spite." He let out a weak chuckle. He then looked at her, blue eyes meeting brown. "I want to stick it to everyone that ever thought I couldn't be a hero, that not only was I one, but one of the nicest, caring, and reliable heroes out there." He looked away and down to his feet. "I want to be seen as anything other than a stupid villain..."
Ochako grabbed his hand and brought it to her face for a closer look. He had calluses, but it was warm and surprisingly soft–he must have used moisturiser when he got out of the shower. "You know what I see?"
"A hand with claws on it?" She shook her head no. "Then what?"
"I see a hand that can carry things, hold things up, can kick butt when needed, but most importantly" –she brought her other hand up, put it in his palm, and closed his hand around hers– "A hand that can save someone, and keep them safe." She opened his hand up and showed him hers.
Hers had many of the properties of his own, but they were slightly smaller than his, and much softer. "I see your hand as the same as mine, hands of a hero." She gave him a heartfelt smile. "You are a hero, Dokusei." Dokusei felt the sting of tears building up. "To the Naamahs you are a hero; you saved her before she could really hurt herself."
Dokusei pulled out his handkerchief, wiped away any tears that fell. "Well congratulations, you made me cry..."
She let out a giggle. "Oh we're not done yet!" She pointed at him. "I want to hear you say it!" He gave her a questioning look. "Say "I am a hero!""
Dokusei chuckled at that. "I am a hero."
"Louder!" She raised her arms into the air. "Say it like you mean it!"
"I'm a hero!" A smile was forming quickly.
"Come on! I know you can go louder!"
"I'M A HERO!" He all but screamed at her.
"There it is!" She let out a laugh and soon the two were laughing together.
Dokusei eventually calmed down enough to look at her. They locked eyes and he felt a tightening in his chest shoot through him without warning. He quickly made it look like he swallowed wrong.
Ochako stopped giggling. "You ok?"
"Yeah..." Another fake cough went through. "Spit went down the wrong pipe..."
"Oh I hate that!" She patted his back a bit. "Well, it is getting late, so I guess I'll see you in the morning." She got up and went to her bed behind the divider.
"Good night..." He lay down in his bed, but the mental picture of Ochako laughing with him made his chest clench again. "Fuck... I really got it bad..."
Ochako stared at the divider as she lay in her bed. She saw the look Dokusei gave her, but didn't know what it meant; it looked like surprise, or something along those lines. "I could ask him later..." –she let out a yawn– "Yeah... after the work studies..."
The next morning before the day's training started, Ochako decided to call Midoriya and check up on him. "Hey!" Dokusei looked at her as she spoke to the phone. "Yeah me and Dokusei were confused at first, but then saw the news while we were at a hospital."
Dokusei didn't need to hear the conversation to know Midoriya was worried when she mentioned the hospital. "No, no. It's not like that, Gunhead got a little hurt and a girl had a quirk malfunction. We kinda went to the hospital because we didn't have anywhere else to go." She smiled at Dokusei, while he gave her a hurry up gesture. "Anyways, we need to get going; we'll talk later!" She hung up the phone without much of a reply.
Dokusei crossed his arms. "How is he?"
"He's doing ok; he, Iida, and Todoroki are all at the hospital after they ran into the Hero Killer." Dokusei's face scrunched up at the mention of Iida.
"I should've told Aizawa..."
"That's in the past now." Gunhead walked up to them. "Come on, we got training to catch up on." They followed him till he stopped and handed Ochako a rubber stunt knife. "Unfortunately because of yesterday, we're a bit behind on the training I have for you, but there's no point in complaining about it." He pointed to Ochako. "I want you to come at me with the knife as hard as you can. We will be going over how to protect yourself from a wacko with a knife!"
"If you say so..." She looked at the knife real quick before rushing at Gunhead.
"Three... two... one..." Dokusei counted down, and just as he finished, Ochako was face first into the mat again.
Ochako was having a little feeling of deja vu. "This is almost like how Dokusei got me in the mock battle..."
"... remember to kick the knife away." Gunhead got to Ochako and helped her up. "We'll be going over this till it's second nature for you. Phantom will be your partner."
"Don't worry, Care Bear," Dokusei started, "You'll be throwing me to the mat in no time." He gave her a smile.
That seemed to get her spirits up. "Alright!"
He broke down the take down Gunhead did step by step. "Ok, first we'll work on getting out of the way first, then build on that." He held up the knife. "I'll go slow, then slowly build up speed as you get it down." She nodded at him as she prepared. His speed was fast, but easy enough to dodge. "Good, again."
They did that for a few minutes before she was dodging his full lunge at his highest speed; he was comfortable with her. "Nice, next step is the grab." He pointed at his wrist. "You need to grab my wrist in a firm grip, and of course don't make me float. After I lunge at you, we'll do this till it's second nature to you." He readied himself. "Got it?"
"Right!" She got into her fighting stance.
He lunged at her and she went to grab his wrist, but it was too slow, and Dokusei got out of there before she could try again. They reset and went at it once more.
It wasn't till about the tenth attempt that she got a hold of his wrist, but her grip was too weak, and he escaped because of this. "Don't be afraid of hurting me, Care Bear. You won't." He gave her a smile and winked. The next attempt she got a good hold on him, one where he wasn't getting away anytime soon. "Better, now can you repeat it?"
She did for the next five times. She smiled at him every time she got him, sending that stupid chest clenching sensation every time. "This woman is going to give me a heart attack..."
Dokusei cleared his throat and proceeded to the next step, the toss. "Now this one is tricky." He stood next to her and put her into a mock lung. "After you grab the wrist, I want you to move your back foot and hip forward, putting your leg in front of mine and your hip next to mine. With the momentum I'm generating it will be very easy for me to be tossed." He showed her his feet and hip placements. "Next I need you to place your hand on either side of my neck" –he placed his free hand on the back of her neck– "between the shoulder blades, or grab the back of my shirt." He grabbed her suit collar as an example. "I prefer the shoulder blades, less likely to get my claws into someone if I don't want to, but everyone has their own preference."
He stepped back and Ochako got back into her fighting stance. "After you get the placements down the throw will just happen on its own."
They went at this for a few more tries. Ochako seemed to really like grabbing his neck, but kept getting her hip too far forward and nearly getting her hip rammed into. "You got this, just breathe." They got back into position and tried again. This time Ochako got everything right and actually tossed Dokusei onto the mat and was on his back with his arm raised high, just like he did against her in the mock battle. "Wow!" She let out in astonishment.
Dokusei looked back as best he could. "Told you that toss would come naturally." She got off him and helped him up. "Now just keep putting everything into practice and it will become second nature in no time!"
"Yeah!" She was beginning to shake with excitement. "That was awesome; I barely felt your weight! It was like you were not even there!"
He smiled at her. "Yeah that tends to happen, and especially with people of similar weights. It is noticeable when someone is clearly bigger than you." He got back into position. "Training is not over, Care Bear."
"Right!" They went back to it and Dokusei began to remember why he hated the mat so much, but Ochako's smile helped with that.
Agent Aries and Gunhead watched from afar. "You know, you act a lot like a schoolgirl when it comes to crap like this," Aries said as she looked at him. "I don't know why you care so much; it will just get in the way of things."
"Because it is good to cherish such times; you never realize when you were truly happy till it's all gone..."
They said nothing more as Dokusei continued to train Ochako. They both could see that both were getting close. Whether it would bloom into something more, that was something only time could tell.
