Elysia waited a whole two years before trying anything having to do with magic. She wasn't sure how old she had to be to begin practicing, but she wanted to wait a bit just in case. She thought seven was as good enough an age as any, what with it often being used as a lucky number.
She started with the smaller spells she remembered from the show. The ones Bonnie had started with when she'd learned of magic. She waited till her sister and Grams were asleep, before grabbing a pillow and a small pocket knife from the junk drawer and sneaking out into their backyard.
Their home was in a neighborhood that kept their houses rather spaced out, so their closest neighbors weren't right beside them. Along with that, each yard had surrounding fences, and the Bennett household in particular was very close to a forest area, what with it being almost right behind their backyard.
Her Grams' room was upstairs and facing the opposite direction, so she felt this was as safe and discrete as she could get. At least at her current young age.
Just in case, however, she went a bit further out, closer towards the forest area where it was darker and harder for her Grams to see her if she were to decide to randomly go out back late at night.
She had grabbed a flashlight from a drawer she knew to contain several clutter items as a precaution, but hoped she wouldn't need it.
Sitting with her back to the fence, criss-cross applesauce style, she sat the pillow on her lap and breathed in and out deeply, trying to prepare herself. She then took the pocket knife and slashed the pillow open, showing the feathers within.
The night was dark, but in contrast the moon was out in full, along with the stars making it bright enough for her to see what she was doing. The temperature was just right, neither too hot or too cold with not enough wind to mess up what she was about to do.
The very first time she'd watched this scene from the show, she was in awe. She'd loved the innocence of the act, and the pure joy that radiated from Bonnie at having been the one to do it. At magic actually being real. It had instantly become one of her favorites scenes, even till the show eventually came to an end.
With that memory in mind, she focused on the warmth she'd long noticed close to her heart enveloping her chest. It was soft and gentle, very comforting. When she was newly born, it had been just a small ember. Not very noticeable, but still present. Now it was like a small fire. Not yet a bonfire or a full blown forest fire, but still powerful.
She reached for it, pulling it forward while envisioning what she wanted to happen. She knew a simple act like this one didn't need any long chants or even words at all. That was why she'd chosen it.
Her small fire came forward, seemingly eager for the task it was given, small as it was. Staring at the feathers before her, she watched in increasing wonder as they began to rise one by one before suddenly all at once, dancing around her.
She laughed lightly in joy. She'd always loved the idea of having magic. It had just seemed so wonderful to her. She gravitated towards shows and books that had it, and she couldn't be happier that now she had magic of her own.
Breathing out deeply, she concentrated on one by one on bringing the feathers back down into the pillow. She wanted to test her control and how long her magic would last. At last, she finished, noting mentally that it had been around five minutes, and her magic barely felt the drain. She theorized this was because it was a smaller spell, one that didn't need much concentration or power.
That done, she decided to try a couple more spells. Next would be the Object-Mending spell, which did as it implied, restoring an object to its original state. This one was a bit harder and required an incantation. From what she remembered, however, not all incantations were the same. You could use words that differ from what someone else says, but achieve the same results. Still, the words needed to in some way relate to what you were trying to do.
Closing her eyes, she pulled her magic forward once more and concentrated on the ripped pillow in her lap. Breathing in and out calmly, she repeated the incantation she had chosen. 'Sicut erat. Sicut erat. Sicut erat.'
Feeling a slight tingle, she opened her eyes to find the pillow exactly as it was before she had tore into it. The rip was now gone. She smiled happily at her achievement. This time she noticed a drain from the magic. Her fire felt smaller.
Putting the pillow aside, she cupped her hands in front of her face. This time she wanted to see the results as they happened. She would be doing a very visual spell after all. Concentrating slightly, she gazed down at her hands. She then started her incantation. 'Fiat lux.'
This time she only needed to say it once, as her magic gathered in her hands, taking on the form of a bright ball of light. As long as she kept her focus on it, it stayed in this state. Decreasing her magic lowered its brightness, and increasing her magic made it even brighter. If she stopped the flow of her magic or lost her concentration, however, it flickered out.
For the next couple hours, she repeated these three spells trying to get them as close to perfect as possible. The levitation spell was easy, and took not much time at all. She was able to make the feathers float with barely a thought. The mending spell was harder only in that it required more concentration. Eventually though she got it down to only one incantation and to about five seconds, the rip closing almost instantly. The light spell was the easiest of them all. After all, it was something humans naturally gravitated towards. She got it down to no incantation, much like first, and barely any concentration needed, like the second.
Overall, she was pretty happy with her progress. She decided she just needed to learn a bit more magic and do a couple more things before she was ready to finally show Bonnie.
Sneaking back inside and putting everything away, she made her way back into her room, falling asleep excited about the future to come.
