Betty of room 101 in the Barbeux Motel is visiting Huxley County to meet her first grandchild. Her daughter and son-in-law live in a small apartment a few blocks away. Betty plans to go to bed right after the last episode of Judge Judy when her show is interrupted by a loud, pained screaming down the hall. Betty startles at the sudden noise and moves to the desk in the room and picks up the phone.
