Hello.
The idea of writing a Naruto/Fairy Tail crossover centered on Sakura has been lingering in the back of my head for a while and, despite my laziness to actually write it down, I simply could not take it off my mind. So I finally gave up and decided to give it a shot. If you like Sakura and think she did not get enough screen time in Naruto, please give it one as well.
My sincerest thanks to all who read this story!
"That scarf, who was it from?"
Sakura watched in silence as Naruto, after staring at Hinata for a few seconds, quietly pulled the bordered scarf out of his jacket. She had a smile on her face. Finally, after so many years rooting for them! Alongside her, Shikamaru, Sai and Hanabi were also watching. None of them interrupted. Everything around them was dark and silent, except for the glowing yellow orbs scattered across that space between the Moon and the Earth.
"This… My late mom knit it for me."
The blonde said while as he exposed the green scarf, and Hinata's mouth immediately opened. It was only then that Sakura realised: the Hyuuga heiress was actually jealous! She probably thought it had been given to him by another girl. Oh, Sakura would tease her so much about it later.
"Eh…"
That scarf once belonged to Kushina Uzumaki, who'd died not long after Naruto was born. It had been the Third Hokage, who for a long time acted as Naruto's guardian, who received it from Kushina while she was still alive and kept it, and it had stayed stowed away in a box for over seventeen years - it probably would stay there forever if Konohamaru, Hiruzen's grandson, had not recently discovered it and given it to Naruto.
A few seconds went by before Hinata tried to speak again, this time in a softer manner.
"I see… I just…"
She started awkwardly, but stopped soon after.
"No… actually I…"
Naruto also tried. Thankfully to both of them, it was at that moment Hanabi decided to make her presence there known.
"Jeez, Onee-chan! How long are you going to keep talking? We're going on ahead!"
And just like that the awkwardness of the moment was gone. Despite her smile, Sakura was actually grateful to the girl for doing that. She was still trying to figure out her relationship with Sasuke, and the longer she spent watching them, the more depressed the medical-nin grew. Of course she was happy for them, but who could blame her for getting upset? It had been over two years by now since the end of the War!
When Hinata turned towards the familiar voice, Hanabi was standing on a nearby sand knot. Her younger sister was smiling while twirling her strapped kunai. She was actually doing great for someone whose eyes had been literally taken off their sockets by Toneri not too long ago. Both of them had been returned by now, thanks to Sakura's healing abilities.
"Ha-Hanabi… You can see?"
"Yeah, thanks to Sakura."
Hanabi clung to Sakura's arm and smiled, and Sakura smiled back at her. The medical-nin could not help but feel extremely proud of herself. Healing techniques were very difficult due to the highly refined chakra control they demanded from the user, and healing someone's eyes was even harder. Two years ago she probably would not have been able to do help Hanabi, but by now her proficiency with medical ninjutsu had surpassed even that of her master, to the point the only thing she would not be capable to do with her own chakra was regrowing someone's limbs.
"Thank goodness…"
Hinata murmured, moved to tears as she bowed deeply to Sakura, who blushed a bit. Sakura had helped both her and her sister by coming alongside Naruto to rescue them, and now healing her little sister. No matter what, she would never be able to repay her kindness — not that Sakura would've wanted it, of course.
But that's when all of them suddenly felt as if space itself was producing waves around them. It was a strange feeling, alike to trying to swim through a whirlpool, though none of them was dragged away. They were not on Earth; that place they were in was an alternate dimension connecting their planet and the Moon, created by the Ootsutsuki clan so that they could easily travel between them. As Toneri took the Moon away from Earth, it was natural that this pathway would soon cease to exist.
"Hurry up! This space is starting to collapse!"
It was Shikamaru the one who urged them. Naruto and Hinata looked up at the darkness overhead. Unlike when they came, they would be climbing up into the darkness. Countless shining bubbles and knots of sand were floating. Naruto and Hinata held hands and jumped. The others followed soon. They had to be quick if they wanted to avoid getting stuck in there.
The way back was relatively tranquil. Without sign of danger, they all jumped off the green water pool... or that's how it was supposed to go. What they had no way to know is what was happening at that same time in a very different world than theirs. Had it all gone as planned, Sakura would've exited the space tunnel between the Earth and the Moon and go back to the Leaf. But...
But fate was not so kind. Or perhaps it was? Some would say it is a matter of perspective; despite being sent far away from home, the place she would wake up in was not that bad. Some would say she was even meant to be there, for she alone could have saved that girl's life. Oh, but we're getting too far ahead, aren't we? So let's leave it at that. It is probably better to let the future speak for itself.
When her eyes opened again, the first thing Sakura noticed was that she did not end up in a cave as she was expecting to. Instead, everything around her was blue and bright, and... and she was falling. The wind rushed as the pink haired girl plummeted from the sky. Below, the ground seemed to be getting bigger at every second.
How did she get into that situation? Sakura had no idea, but there was no time to think! She had to act quickly. To her credit, despite the situation the medical-nin did not panick. She had always been pretty intelligent. Spreading her limbs the best she could in order to reduce terminal velocity, as Sakura started analysing her current predicament she noticed that she was actually falling straight towards a body of water. That was not as bad as hitting the ground, but from that height it would still be like hitting a concrete wall. She had to brace for impact: it would hurt, but it was nothing she could not survive.
Channeling as much chakra as she could to her legs during her fall, Sakura prepared to act. The lake was very close now. She would be hitting its surface in only a couple of seconds. 'Four... three...' the kunoichi put her arms closer to her body and legs closer to each other. 'Two...' that allowed the kunoichi to put herself into a vertical position just in time, so that her feet would be hitting the water first rather than falling flat on its surface. 'One...' and they soon did! Sakura had been through a lot over the years. Fighting the Fourth Great Ninja War definitely had not been easy. Yet, falling several hundred feet into a lake had to be one of the most painful experiences she had ever gone through.
Had she hit it flat, Sakura probably wouldn't have survived without unleashing the seal. Had she not channeled chakra through her legs, she would probably have lost them both. But she did it — she actually did survive that! The pain was unbearable, but being unable to scream due to the water somehow made everything seem a hundred times worse. Still doing her best to avoid panicking, the pinkette sank for a few seconds before attempting to swim back up. Her arms were fine, but moving her legs was painful. She had probably broke a few bones during that fall.
Although getting back to the surface was difficult, Sakura did manage to reach it relatively fast for someone who had just hit the water at 130 mph. Maybe it was the adrenaline.
"Ooof..."
Gasping for air as soon as her head was off the water, the medical ninja immediately dragged herself out of it. Her legs were aching, but when she looked at them Sakura did not notice anything wrong at first. That was a good sign: there was no exposed fracture. Getting to work, she placed her hands on them. A green chakra immediately manifested on both of them as the kunoichi started healing herself.
The pain slowly diminished as Sakura used the Mystical Palm Technique to heal her legs. That was a relief, but she could not relax just yet. She did not know where she was, or how'd she end up there. And where was everyone else? She had not seem nor heard Naruto, Hinata, Shikamaru or Hanabi. Had them fallen to their deaths as well? Maybe it was a side effect of space-time ninjutsu. None of these questions could be answered. And what if...
KRA-KOOOOOM!
A loud sound interrupted her train of thought. Sakura did not know its cause, but she could immediately tell where it was comming from. The ground shook under her body, and the water trembled. Something had caused a huge impact nearby.
"No need to fret. Maybe it was jus-..."
She started telling herself. Maybe it was not a battle, right? Well... no. An explosion immediately confirmed that it was indeed a battle. It caused Sakura to frown; there were not many outlaws in the modern shinobi world since the war ended, and there was no conflict going on between nations. So what was happening? Deciding it would be wise to move, the girl carefully stood up.
Her legs still felt a bit heavy, but they did not hurt anymore. She could move, but was not sure where to. Sakura did not know where she was. Maybe she should take a look at the battle site, despite not being sure she would be able to fight back in her current situation if someone attacked her. If need arose she should be able to activate the seal, though.
"Not like I know where to go, anyway."
It was time to start moving, and so she did. Sakura sent some chakra to her legs to speed up. She was still wet from falling into that lake, but luckily the sun was enough to to keep her warm and her hair nowadays was too short to become a nuisance. There were lots of trees around. It was a forest, so maybe she was actually near the Hidden Leaf. But if that was the case, why there was fighting near the village? Ignoring her legs' protests, she sped up in distraught at the thought of the Leaf being attacked during her absence.
But as she jumped through it, the more she noticed there was no way that place was anywhere near the village. The trees and plants were just too different. And she did not know of any lake near her village, either.
"ELFMAN, PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER!"
Someone yelled. Sakura did not recognise the voice, but it was definitely of a teenage girl. She tried to speed up again, but then her legs started hurting. She had healed them, yes, but they still needed some rest. Unfortunately, now was not the time, so the pinkette tried to ignored the pain.
"MIRA!"
That voice belonged to another person, and another girl — one apparently a few years younger than the other one. They were still talking something, but Sakura could not figure it out due to the distance. What Sakura did know was that there were at least three people there: the two girls and whoever 'Elfman' was, and judging from the distress in their voices, they needed help.
But even at full speed the kunoichi would still take a few precious seconds to reach them. Now she was growing a bit desperate. 'Please make it in time' Even though she did not know these people, Sakura always had been a caring person, and as a medical-nin it was her duty to help. 'Go...' And then finally she reached the edge of the forest, and from there immediately saw it; two big horns, a massive build. It was a demon in every sense of the world, the likes of which Sakura had never seen. For a moment she thought about the Tailed Beasts, though she knew them personally and knew this creature could not be one of them.
Right after, the pinkette noticed the two girls she'd heard before. The one who seemed older was kneeling on the ground and holding her shoulder. The youngest one stood right in front of the monster, arms wide open. She was saying something, but from that distance Sakura could not hear it. For a moment, the monster did not move or do anything, staring at the white haired girl as if trying to decide what do to. It all happened in a blink of an eye: suddenly its giant arm moved. Sakura immediately bolted into action. Had she been closer maybe she could've made it in time, but from that distance the pinkette could not reach them fast enough, and the girl was viciously smacked away by the creature.
"NO! LISANNA!"
The older one yelled in despair as Lisanna was thrown away. Sakura arrived a second later; after attacking that girl, the monster seemed even more confused than it had been before. It did not even look at the eldest. Well, the kunoichi was not taking any chances — as soon as it was within her reach, a powerful punch connected to the demon's head.
BAM!
Thrown away by the sheer strength of that attack, its massive body flew violently crashed against the side of a cliff, then fell to the ground. Sakura did not waste any second. She had to find and treat that wounded girl right away, but at the same time needed to keep the beast down and take care of the older one as well; and so it was time to borrow a card from Naruto's hand. Both Sakura's hands met right in front of her chest, combining into the sign she had seen her blonde teammate perform so many times over the years.
"Shadow Clone Jutsu!"
Not two seconds later, two perfect copies of Sakura popped into existence. None of them shared a word — the real Sakura went after Lisanna, leaving her clones behind to take care of the monster and the older girl. By then, the teen finally seemed to notice Sakura's presence nearby.
"Wh-..."
"There's no time to explain now, but I'm here to help. Please stay still. I believe your name is Mira, right?"
Sakura knew from experience it would be better to keep talking with the girl. Unfortunately, to hear her name being spoken aloud was enough to take the girl out of her stupor state, and she immediately started struggling to get up.
"Hey, I sai-..."
"N-no, no, no, no... let go of me, I need to find my sister!"
If that was Naruto, Sakura probably would have grown annoyed and hit him for not cooperating. This time she decided not to do that, partially because she felt bad for the girl. The clone still kept her down, but tried to mantain a low voice tone while attempting to calm her down.
"Your sister is fine, okay? I've already treated her." The medical-nin said. "You will see her soon enough, but first I need you to stay calm and let me heal you."
It was mostly true. The real Sakura was tending to Lisanna's wounds at that very moment, and hopefully it would be enough to save her, but she doubted Mira could do anything to help.
"I-... you did?" The white haired teenager looked up to Sakura, her eyes full of hope. "Lisanna is okay?"
"..." The clone almost looked away - almost. Maybe she would be. "Don't worry, I'll take you to her. But first I need to heal you and take that creature down"
And just like that Sakura touched Mira's shoulder, but the relief on the younger girl's face didn't last long. She once again resisted her touch.
"N-no! No! He is my brother, I need to help him as w-..."
"Your brother?!"
The kunoichi interrupted in disbelief. This time she did not even try to hold Mira down.
"It's all my fault... I messed up. He tried to do a full-body Take Over, but..." Mira stumbled as she got up. Yes, she was wounded and hurt, but it didn't matter at the moment: she had to help her brother somehow. But he'd just tried to kill Lisanna, what if he was gone for good? She shivered in fear, but could not give up hope. She had to find a way to bring him back. "Now he's lost himself. Please... please help me bring him back"
Of course Sakura was going to do everything in her power to help, although she had no idea of what a Take Over was. She had never seen anything like that monster before. Well, maybe Naruto and Bee transforming into their Tailed Beasts, but Sakura had seen all beasts during the War and was pretty sure this creature was not one of them. 'Must be a weird jutsu or something' she thought.
The kunoichi took a deep breath and slowly got up as well. She did not know what a Take Over was or how to deal with it, but this girl did, so perhaps they could save him by working together.
"Alright. Lead the way"
Guess I should say that: not sure how I'm going to continue this story. As I said before, I am very lazy and if I do continue, it is very likely that it will take me a while between every update. I do, however, have everything (from start to finish) figured out already and know how many chapters it will have by the time it is completed, so the only thing I really need is motivation to keep going. If this story does get enough attention maybe I will put some more effort to update it consistently, but that's it.
Thank you.
