Bonus Chapter; Holiday Runaway
Hold Up! Quick note before hand! This is a flash back chapter, but all you need to know is that Ruby and Scarlet are both 10 years old, Yang is 12, and Neo is 15. Enjoy!
Ruby bounded down the stairs of the wooden cabin as fast as she could. "C'MON YANG!" She called after her half-sister.
Yang slowly followed her hyper energetic sister down the stairs rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. "Ruby…" She yawned, "It's too early for this…" She groaned.
Their father Tai brushed by Yang ruffling her hair, "Then I guess you don't want your presents."
Yang's eyes lit up quickly, "I never said that." She stated with sudden energy.
The family found their seats around the table and passed around brightly colored boxes full of toys and the occasional disappointing article of clothing. This was Ruby's favorite time of the year, from the weeks of build up by their dad to the payoff of tearing the wrapping off the present. She even loved the days after, playing with her new toys and beating Yang at video games.
But every year there was this strange feeling in the back of her mind. Something was missing. No matter how hard she tried to force the feeling out of her mind, it persisted sitting ever present in the back of her mind.
Something.
Was.
Missing.
Scarlet's eyes fluttered open as she rolled over in her old creaky bed. She gazed around her room with its faded maroon walls, ragged beige carpet that felt like sandpaper when walked on. Her toys, most she looted from dumpsters, were piled in corner. On the other side of the room was another bed that was as old and creaky as hers, but with pink and brown blankets.
She sat upright and shrugged off her blankets and put on her slippers. She yawned and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes as she stood up and walked out of her room. She walked down a short hall passing by her father's room and the kitchen into the living room.
Sitting on a stool next to the bar looking into the kitchen was her older adopted sister. She was drawing a design for a gun on a piece of paper. She looked over she shoulder at the younger girl, "Good morning Scarlet." She stated clearly.
"Morning Neo…" Scarlet mumbled. Scarlet was wearing simple outfit of black t-shirt and red and black checkered pants. The most notable feature of the girl was that her right arm was tightly wrapped in bandages.
"Does your arm still hurt?" Neo asked as she went back to her blueprints.
"A little…" She answered scratching at the wrappings. "The pain meds the doctor gave me help."
"Good." Neo paused for a second. "You do know that I'm sorry for…"
"For burning my arm with a birthday present?" Scarlet quickly cut in.
"It was supposed to be a joke." Neo defended.
"Neo, presents are not supposed to harm people, their meant to make them happy." Scarlet chastised, her voice growing with anger.
"Well, I've learned my lesson." Neo stated her tone tipped with sarcasm.
"Then why don't you prove it." Scarlet challenged firmly.
Neo gave her a confused look.
"Do you not know what today is?"
Neo shook her head.
Scarlet looked shocked and stammered out gibberish as she stumbled over her words. She gave up trying to form a sentence and groaned walking over to the couch sitting down and tucking her knees to her chest.
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper. She slowly and carefully unfolded it revealing a photo of her mother cradling her and her twin sister shortly after they were born.
She ran her finger across the photo. "Hope you're having a better day than I am sis."
"Why are you obsessed with that picture?" Neo broke in, now standing in front of Scarlet. "They're both dead you know."
"Their alive." Scarlet mumbled.
Neo sighed. "Dad found you in the jaws of a beowolf, and I would bet all of the money in the world that those two were in its stomach."
"Shut up…" Scarlet whispered, tears welling in her eyes.
"Just forget about them." Neo stated grabbing the picture in Scarlet's hands and tugging on it.
"NO!" Scarlet shouted yanking back on the prized possession.
Scarlet hit the back of the couch with a thud and Neo stumbled as a loud powerful ripping sound filled the room. Scarlet looked down at the picture in her hands seeing it torn in half right down her mother's face.
"Whoops…" Neo started. "No big deal." She shrugged starting to turn away.
"You…" Scarlet started in a voice so quite it was barely a whisper. "You ripped my picture…" She was so in shock that the tears hadn't left her eyes.
"Yeah, so?" Neo paused for a second. "You can finally get over them and move on with your life." She stated.
"That was the only connection I had to my family!" Scarlet shouted at the top of her lungs, tears falling out of her face like a waterfall. "AND YOU DESTROYED IT!"
Neo paused with a confused look on her face. "And…?"
Scarlet's fists clenched so hard her palms turned red. Anger was building inside the girl at an enormous rate. "That picture meant EVERYTHING to me!" She screeched back at her sister. Scarlet's eyes began to faintly glow a dull silver.
"It was holding you back." Neo scoffed.
Scarlet's nails tore through her skin and drew blood from her palm, and her eyes erupted in a bright silver glow. A dark red sheen flared across her skin and black rose petals started to form and fall from her skin.
Neo took a step back in shock. Scarlet had just unlocked her aura and semblance at once because she tore a piece of paper. "Scarlet…" She mumbled.
"SHUT UP!" The girl shouted, her aura flaring across her skin again. Scarlet glared at her sister with pure blood boiling murderous rage. "I HATE YOU! I HATE DAD! I HATE EVERYTHING I HAVE HAD TO LIVE THROUGH WITH THE TWO OF YOU! I WOULD RATHER HAVE DIED THAN BE FORCED TO LIVE WITH YOU!" Her shouts carried a malice that Neo had never heard from the girl. A waterfall of tears poured down Scarlet's face staining the floor below her.
Neo stood there in stone clod silence; her expression was unreadable.
Scarlet's brain went on autopilot, and she ran out of the apartment not noticing the gush of wind she left as her semblance increased her speed. She ran for as long, as far, and as fast as she could trying to get far away from the hell she was forced to call home.
She came to a stop in a random park in the middle of Vale and fell onto the floor panting for breath. Her newfound aura flicked around her body. She stumbled to her feet and was immediately hit by the stinging cold air. She grabbed her arms to stay warm and looked around her new environment. The park she stood in would one day be the park that one day she would reunite with her half-sister Yang.
"What was I thinking…" Scarlet chastised to herself. A gust of wind blew past making her shiver. She held back tears left over from her run and started to walked down one of the many alleyways connected to the park. As she walked her body and mind began to feel more and more tired.
She found a building with a large fan sticking out the side spewing out warm air. Deciding this would be a good spot to rest she sat down on the damp cold concrete and leaned against the wall. She watched as the people in the distance walked past the alley always in a rush to get somewhere. Somewhere deep down she hopped that one of those people would see her and take her to a better life.
She let out a long-exhausted yawn. Scarlet slowly stood up, "Well if I'm going to be staying here, might as well make it conferrable." She muttered to herself. She scrouged around the alley and found a few used grocery bags and plenty of paper shreds to turn into a makeshift pillow and old jackets to use as blankets. She laid out the spare paper shreds to use as makeshift mattress. Scarlet laid down on her concrete and paper bed and rolled on her side to sleep.
No normal person would have been able to sleep in the freezing in cold with barley warm air being blown on them by a loud fan while laying on concrete and damp paper. But Scarlet was so physically and emotional tired that she couldn't have cared less.
Scarlet's eyes fluttered open, and the incredible pain that can only come from sleeping on concrete washed over her. She slowly sat up shivering in the cold, as she looked up she saw a person standing over her.
Scarlet stared at the person for several seconds as her eyes adjusted. "Well don't you look comfortable." The familiar voice spoke in a sarcastic tone.
"Neo…?" Scarlet breathed out.
"…Yeah." Neo stated sound usually shameful. The teenager crouched down in front of the girl.
"How did you find me?" Scarlet asked, not sure where she was herself.
Neo gave her a sly smile as to say, 'I have my way.'. Neo cleared her throat and took a deep breath. "I wanted to apologize for ripping your picture. I know now that it meant a lot to you, and I couldn't see that. I guess it has something to do with me not knowing anything about my birth family." Neo's tone has hard to place, but the apologetic part was clearly heard.
"You wanted me to forget about them." Scarlet shot back, a small amount of anger welling back up inside.
"That's because I wanted you to be more like me… but you are nothing like me and," Neo paused for a second. "That's a good thing."
Scarlet wasn't sure what to say. She still felt angry at Neo, but this was the sincerest and kind she had ever been.
"I have been a terrible sister to you, and I apologize." Neo looked scarlet in the eyes and gave a genuine happy smile. "And I know that I can't undo everything that I've done, but I can change." Neo reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small box wrapped in colorful paper. "I hope this is a good start."
Scarlet grabbed the box and tore the paper off to see that it was a white box with a removable lid. Removing the lid, she saw the photo of her mom and twin sister, the tear down the middle seamlessly repaired.
"How did you…" Scarlet breathed out.
"I know a guy." Neo teased.
Scarlet grabbed Neo in the tightest hug she could as tears of happiness poured down her face. "THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!"
Neo chuckled, "Let's go home, you need a shower." Scarlet laughed at Neo's joke and let her sister go. Scarlet followed Neo onto a bus and the two went back to the apartment.
Next Chapter; Old Qrow (For real this time)
100 Followers... god damn... I honestly have no words to express how that makes me feel. If I had to boil it all down to a few words than all I can say is; Thank you all.
Anyway is other news. Yes I wrote this chapter to celebrate 100 followers, but it's also a holiday special, a very emotional special, but still a special. One important thing I tried to do was make the holiday this chapter takes place on as ambiguous as possible. My family celebrates Christmas, but the holiday in this chapter could be swapped out for anything you want.
On that note. Thank you all, and Farewell for now. (Also happy new year.)
