Meetings with Cinder were few and far between, but this one was just redundant. Cinder spent the entire time telling them to be careful about some new Atlas operatives in Vale, and when she dropped that topic she just reviewed the plan that hadn't changed at all.
Scarlet left that room feeling the same way when she walked in; bored. As she was turning around the corner with Neo by her side a voice called after her. "Hey Scarlet! Wait up!" She stopped in her tracks and turned to see Emerald chasing after her.
"What's up Em?" Scarlet asked raising an eyebrow.
"Can I talk to you…" The green haired girl glared at Neo. "Alone…"
"Sure thing." Scarlet responded motioning for Neo to leave.
Emerald grabbed Scarlet by the wrist and quickly lead her through the twisting hallways, up the stairs, and onto the roof. Emerald stood across from Scarlet closer to the edge, and Scarlet stood on the side closer to the door.
"So why did you want to talk to me?" Scarlet asked seeing Emerald starting to pace.
"It's about Cinder." She responded.
"What about her?" Scarlet retorted at Emerald vague answer.
"It's her plan to destroy the Vytal Festival." Emerald stopped pacing and turned to face Scarlet head on. "I don't know if I can go through with it."
Scarlet was a little stunned. Emerald had always seemed loyal to Cinder, from what she had gathered. "Where is this coming from?" Scarlet asked not thinking.
"It all started back when your dad got thrown in jail." She started. "For a while I thought we were untouchable, and then Roman gets caught and my entire perspective changed." She started to pace again. "Next thing I know, Cinder has this whole plan to destroy the Vytal festival! And she wants me to be her partner during the fights! AND-. "
"HOLD ON!" Scarlet shouted cutting Emerald off. "Calm down for a second." She said placing a hand on Emerald's shoulder. "Why are you really against Cinder's plan?"
Emerald took a long deep breath. "A lot of people will be killed, and even more injured. I know that I owe Cinder a lot, but just the thought of being partly responsible for something this big doesn't sit well with me." Emerald's voice was low and full of emotion.
"I know what you mean…" Scarlet mumbled.
"What do you mean?"
Scarlet panicked internally for a second. "Well…" She started trying to come up with a lie. 'Wait why lie, if she's against Cinder then maybe she can help me and Neo.' Her inner voice interrupted. "I'm not really with Cinder at all."
"So, you see what I mean?" Emerald asked, her question sounding more like a plea.
"Yeah I do. You don't want to know that you were partly responsible for a disaster."
The two of them stood there is silence for a moment.
"Hey Scarlet…"
"Yeah Em'?"
"Why are you still working for Cinder?"
"Honestly…" Scarlet started. "I'm scared she might kill me." This was a half-truth. The real reason she still worked for Cinder was so she could one day be arrested, but the thought of Cinder finding out about her double cross kept her up at night.
"That's kinda the same reason I haven't left." Emerald mumbled just loud enough for Scarlet to hear. She took a deep breath and looked at Scarlet in the eyes. "So, what do we do?"
Scarlet chuckled lightly. "Just give me a few days to think. Until than this conversation doesn't leave this roof." She put on a serious tone as she finished her sentence.
Emerald nodded. "Thanks for hearing me out…"
"No prob Em'." Scarlet's scroll buzzed and she took it out to see she had a message from Ozpin. "I have to go; I'll talk to you in a couple days." Scarlet than took off down the stairs and across the campus trying to avoid as many students as possible.
She made it the elevator to Ozpin's office without anyone noticing her in record time. She had spent several hours one day learning the least traveled routes by students, as to best avoid an encounter with someone her sisters might know.
As she approached the elevator door she saw a short girl with black hair and black eyes typing away on her scroll leaning against the wall. Scarlet pressed the button to call the elevator, "Hey Neo." She greeted.
"How did you know!?" Neo pouted her eyes turning back to normal.
"I helped you come up with that disguise." She pointed out with a smirk.
Neo sighed and stood next to her sister waiting for the elevator. "Why did Emerald want to talk to you?" She asked after a long pause.
"She's having doubts about Cinder's plan." Scarlet answered without hesitation.
"Seriously?" Neo asked In disbelief. Scarlet nodded in return. "Huh, I always thought those two were close." The elevator let out a loud ding and its doors opened.
"Same here." Scarlet responded as they stepped inside and selected the only floor.
A long pause set over the sisters. "You know," Scarlet started. "If we play our cards right, than Emerald might be willing to help us. Hell, she might even convince Mercury."
Neo shrugged and smiled at her sister.
"I'm going to bring it up with Ozpin." She informed as another pause set over them.
The ride to Ozpins office was painfully slow for the high-tech school, and with no stairs to his office the elevator was the only way up. The elevator doors would open automatically at the bottom floor, but when at the top they would only open after the headmaster pressed a button on his desk.
As they got higher they could hear a faint mumbling coming from above them. The mumbling soon became louder and then turned to talking, and then angry shouting by one man.
The elevator came to a halt and the sisters could hear everything being said on the other side of the elevator doors.
"WHERE IS SHE OZ!" A man shouted.
"You need to calm down…" The headmaster's voice spoke up.
"THE HELL I NEED TO BE CALM!" The man shouted again. "I DIDN'T DRAG TAI UP FROM PATCH TO NOT SEE HER!"
"What is this drunk idiot ranting about?" A women groaned off to the side.
"Qrow just calm down so we can explain." The voice of General Ironwood broke In.
"WHAT'S THERE TO EXPLAIN JAMES! YOU TWO KNEW SHE WAS ALIVE AND DIDN'T TELL ME!" The man roared at the top of his lungs.
"Maybe we should come back later…" Scarlet awkwardly stated reaching for the button to send the elevator back down.
Suddenly the doors opened, and they saw a tall man with back and grey hair with piercing red eyes. He was wearing a white and grey coat and black pants with a ragged red cape over his shoulders. Scarlet could make out the faint smell of alcohol wafting off him.
"Are we interrupting…?" Scarlet awkwardly asked.
A tall women with snow white hair stepped into view. "Now, why are you here?" She asked visibly confused.
"You two have met?" Ironwood asked stepping forward.
"Yes," The snow haired women answered "I met her down in the courtyard with my sister. Ruby was it?" She said turning towards Scarlet.
"I've never seen you before in my life lady." Scarlet said on autopilot. The women looked greatly offended by her remark, and an awkward smile fell over Ironwood's face.
The grey-haired man didn't look at Scarlet and kept his gaze fixed on Ozpin. "You should leave Ruby." He ordered.
"Not Ruby!" Scarlet chirped. The man's entire posture straightened in shock as he wheeled around on his feet to face Scarlet.
Qrow had stared into Ruby's eyes a thousand times, but the eyes of the girl he had locked eyes with were completely alien. Ruby's eyes were bright and full of energy with a sparkle that would never leave, but this girl's eyes had a steely sharpness to them and a coldness that shot straight through his soul.
"Sc-… Scar- Scarlet…?" He choked out.
"Yeah… last time I checked." She responded scratching the back of her neck. "Do I know you from somewhere?" She asked pointing at him. Her word seemed to cause him great pain.
Ironwood silently moved across the room and whispered in Winter's ear for them to leave. The two of them entered the elevator only drawing the attention of Neo. As the doors to the elevator closed Ozpin cleared his throat.
"Scarlet… This is Qrow Branwen. Your uncle." The professor stated in his normal professional tone.
"I… Have an uncle?" Scarlet said drawing out the first letter in every word.
Qrow took a few slow steps forward when he was in front of his niece her knelt to her eye level. "You look just like her…" He mumbled.
"I know I look just like Ruby." Scarlet awkwardly responded.
"No…" Qrow interjected. "Like your mom." He corrected.
Scarlet was taken aback by his statement. She didn't know how to responded and ended up starring into the man's eyes. He raised in hand and tapped the bridge of her nose between her eyes. "It's the eyes." He stated after a second.
Neo started trying to back away slowly, but Scarlet grabbed her by the wrist keeping her sister close. After another moment Qrow started talking again. "You're eyes have the serious and sarcastic glint to them that Summer's had." He clarified.
"Were…" Scarlet started, her words getting stuck in her throat. "Were you her brother?" She asked.
Qrow chuckled as he rose from his knelt position. "No… we were more of a spiritual family, but I am Yang's bio-uncle." He answered.
"What was she like?" Scarlet asked out of the blue.
Neo was surprised by how easily Scarlet was letting her guard down in front of this man. It would have been easy for him to attack her and kill her on the spot. That thought only made Neo raise her guard higher.
"That's a question you should really asked your dad." Qrow dodged as he looked down at his watch and then back to Ozpin. He cursed under his breath. "He's here in Vale right now." Qrow stated abruptly.
"REALLY!?" Scarlet chirped showing all her Rose family energy.
"Yeah…" Qrow said trying, and failing, to hide the smile that was brought on by Scarlet's energy. "Me and him have arranged a family hunting trip in the Emerald Forrest tomorrow at eight, Me, him, Yang and Ruby will be there."
"I'll be there!" Scarlet quickly stated as soon as Qrow was done talking.
"Great. We'll see you there Scar'." He said patting her on the head.
Qrow turned around and started to walk over to Ozpin's desk. "Sorry to cut this meeting short, but I have a prior engagement with a little birdie." Qrow reached into his coat and pulled out his trusty flask and took a long swig from it and placing it on Ozpin's desk. "I'll tell you what I learned on my mission tomorrow." With that Qrow turned around and started walking towards the elevator.
Ozpin glanced down and saw Qrow's flask still on his desk. "Qrow your flask?" Ozpin called after his old friend.
"Oh, right." Qrow mumbled as he entered the elevator. He shot Ozpin a smug smile and pressed the button to head down to the first floor. The door shut and all that was left was Ozpin, Scarlet and Neo In silence.
Ozpin stood in silence as he processed Qrow's actions. When he finally snapped out of his daze he turned to face Scarlet and Neo. "Right, uh…" He hesitated trying to collect his thoughts. "The two of you had an unexpected meeting with Cinder today, correct?"
"Huh?" Scarlet muttered, her head still up in the clouds over meeting her uncle and meeting her father later that night. "OH RIGHT!" She exclaimed as she processed Ozpins question. "Uhh what did we talk about again…" She racked her brain trying to conjure up the memories.
Neo sighed heavily. "All that happened was Cinder telling up to be more careful not to blow our cover since there are Atlas agents in Vale." The shorter girl chastised.
Scarlet starred down at her sister for a moment. "Did you just…"
"Thank you Neo." Ozpin broke in, surprised at hearing her voice for the first time. "Did anything else happen?"
"Not really." Scarlet answered, her fantasies having been put to the side for a moment. "But Emerald did tell me something interesting after we left."
"Please elaborate."
"After we left she dragged me up to the roof and told me that she was having doubts about working for Cinder. I don't want to get my hopes up, but I think we might be able to convince her to join us!" She said in an optimistic tone.
Ozpin mulled over this for a moment. "Her assistance would be very beneficial to us. I still wouldn't get our hopes up, she still may choose to side with Cinder." The headmaster informed. "If you want to bring her over to our side, I recommend not telling her of your double cross until you're positive she is willing to join us."
"Understood." Scarlet stated while Neo nodded.
"Now than, Is there anything else?" Ozpin asked with a raised eyebrow.
Scarlet thought for a moment. "We still getting paid?" She asked jokingly.
Ozpin chuckled to himself. "As always Miss Rose, the answer is yes." He answered with a smile.
"Well, that's it I think." Scarlet said turning around walking towards the elevator. "Later Oz." She called back with a wave.
The doors to the elevator closed and the sisters began their decent towards the ground floor. "I'm going to meet my father…" Scarlet quietly breathed out not able to fully comprehend the thought.
"You must be excited." Neo stated with a smile.
"I am!" Scarlet quickly responded in an energetic tone. "But I'm also kinda scarred…" Her tone quickly turned to one filled with anxiety.
Neo gave her sister a strange look. "Why, you've been fantasizing about reuniting with your family your entire life." She asked clearly confused.
Scarlet sighed. "I really don't know. I mean, I don't even know what he looks like, or what he's like, or-." She was quickly cut off by Neo placing a finger on Scarlet's lips.
"Scarlet…" She started. "If you have questions, than ask your sisters." She put plainly as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Scarlet took a deep breath to collect her thoughts and anxieties. "You're right. I'm going to stop by their room." She thought out loud.
"Good." Neo stated taking a step away from her younger sister. "I'm going to get some ice cream." She though out loud as well.
"You know the never-ending stream off ice cream you eat might be why you're so short." Scarlet teased.
"No, it's genetics…" Neo absent mindedly stated.
"How would you know?" Scarlet asked confused.
Neo's expression quickly changed from distant to that of someone who had made a grave mistake. Right when Scarlet was going to ask further, the elevator door opened. "Another time Scarlet." Neo stated, walking out of the elevator.
"The hell was that about?" Scarlet mumbled to herself.
She made her way over to the Beacon dorms in relatively good time for getting lost halfway there. She entered the building and jogged up the stairs to the floor her sister's team was located on.
She rounded a few corners, got lost, rounded a few more and found the correct hallway. As she approached the door she saw Pyrrha walking out of Team JNPR's dorm in her combat attire.
"Hello Ruby!" She greeted with an enthusiastic smile and wave.
"Wrong twin Red!" Scarlet fired back with a sarcasm that rivaled only Pyrrha's enthusiasm.
"Oh! I'm sorry Scarlet." She apologized feeling incredibly embarrassed.
"It's fine Pyrrha. You're not the first to mix us up, and you won't be the last." She teased with a wide smile.
Pyrrha chuckled lightly at Scarlet's statement. "Why are you here?" She asked a little curious.
"I'm just here to see Ruby and Yang." She responded, silently noticing that this was one of the few times she had told the complete truth to Pyrrha.
"Oh, well I don't want to keep you busy." She said starting to walk away.
"Later!" Scarlet called out to her earning a wave in return.
Scarlet turned and knocked on the door to Team RWBY's dorm room. She didn't hear much movement inside other than someone getting up to answer the door. The door opened and Scarlet's eyes were met by the crystal blue one's of Weiss.
"Hey Snowflake~." Scarlet greeted leaning against the doorframe.
Weiss sighed, but still smiled. "Ruby and Yang are out with their dad right now." She informed.
"Any idea when they might get back?" Scarlet asked replacing her flirty tone for a more casual one.
Weiss, secretly happy with Scarlet's change in tone, opened the door further and stepped aside for Scarlet to enter the room. "Their dad said they will be back before seven." She responded as Scarlet walked in.
"Damn…" Scarlet cursed under her breath.
"Is something wrong?" Weiss asked sitting back down at her desk.
"No.. I just wanted to ask them some questions about our dad." The silver eyed girl stated flopping down on Weiss' bed.
"I forgot you two haven't met…" Weiss mumbled.
"Yep!" Scarlet chirped solemnly. She sat up on the mattress to look at the heiress. "You don't mind if I hang out here until they show up again, do you?" She asked nonchalantly.
"It's fine." Weiss stated with a small smile.
"Thanks." Scarlet said jumping off Weiss' bed, and up onto Ruby's bunk. Her sudden movement and momentum causing the suspended mattress to sway a little. "So, you seem like you're in a good mood." Scarlet called down at the white-haired girl trying to make conversation.
"My sister is in Vale!" Weiss stated like an excitable schoolgirl.
Scarlet thought for a moment. "Is she tall, have white hair in a bun, and work for General Ironwood?" She asked trying to remember the women in Ozpin's office from earlier that day.
"Yes…" Weiss answered a little astonished by the crimson haired girl's guess. "Have you met her?"
"Not really, I just saw her in Ozpin's office today." She clarified.
"Why did you have a meeting with Ozpin?" Weiss asked curiously.
"Cause I had a meeting with Cinder before that." Weiss perked up like a dog hearing a car door being slammed. "Not much to talk about, she's just getting paranoid with all the Atlas soldiers roaming around Vale now." Scarlet added before Weiss' interest got to large.
An awkward silence set over the room for a moment. "So, where's Blake?" Scarlet asked trying to break the lull in the conversation.
"I think she went to the library." Weiss responded.
'Well, that didn't work.' Scarlet chastised herself. The silence set back over the room, but it lasted far longer this time. Weiss eventually went back to writing the paper she was working on.
Scarlet watched from her perch as Weiss' pencil danced across the page. Scarlet's eyes slowly wandered from Weiss's paper, up her arm, and then landing on her face. There was no denying that Weiss was pretty, from her crystal blue eyes, her flowing snow-white hair, her sharp chin and soft cheeks.
Scarlet pulled herself out of her own head as soon as she realized that her face was as red as both of her name sakes. Suddenly an idea popped in her head that she could only describe as idiotic, but ideas like that had never stopped her before in the past.
"Hey Weiss." Scarlet started breaking a ten-minute-long silence.
"Yes Scarlet?" Weiss asked turning around, mildly annoyed that her concentration had been broken.
"Wanna go out on a date tomorrow?" Scarlet asked leaning over the edge of the bed while looking the heiress directly in the eyes.
To say Weiss was shocked would have been an understatement. Her face lit up bright red and she started stumbling out words at the sudden question. "Wha-what…?"
"Do you. Want to. Go out. With me. On a. Date?" Scarlet sarcastically restated her question. Scarlet smiled seeing Weiss' formality and fortitude slowly crumble from her single sentence.
Weiss managed to gather a small semblance of her functionality. "I don't just go out with anybody Scarlet. I prefer someone with intelligence, with respect, someone strong, someone that can challenge me to be a better person." She almost spat at Scarlet in a frantic tone.
Scarlet jumped off the bed and slowly approached the heiress. She took Weiss' hand in her own, "Try me…" Scarlet almost challenged as she locked eyes with Wiess again.
The red in Weiss' face grew as bright as Scarlet's name as she adverted her gaze. "One date." She relented. "But I pick where it is, and that's it!" She ordered.
"You got it Snowflake!" Scarlet replied the happiest she had been since she had met Ruby.
Scarlet let go of Weiss' hand and turned to leave the dorm. "Aren't you going to wait for Ruby and Yang?" Weiss asked curious why Scarlet had chosen to leave.
Scarlet leaned against the wall. "Well, it would just be awkward if I stayed now~." She teased. Weiss' face flared crimson again as she adverted her gaze. "Besides," Scarlet started again putting on a serious tone. "I only have to wait for tomorrow night for my questions to be answered."
Scarlet opened the door ready to leave. "See you tomorrow Weiss!" She winked back at her.
Weiss smiled lightly. "See you tomorrow Scarlet."
Scarlet walked down the hallways of the Beacon dorms that were stained an array of reds and yellows by the setting sun, feeling the happiest she had been in a long, long time. She had asked people out before sure, but most of those times were so she could lure them to Roman who then proceeded to beat them within an inch of their life, or Neo would kill them a few days later.
Now that she reflected on it, Scarlet had never asked a man out on a date before. She did have a few male celebrity crush's as a child, but as she got older she found herself more attracted to the female figure. In an odd way it made sense for her, most of the men in her life either tried to have sex with her, or in the case of Roman, beat the hell out of her.
As she reflected on this thought more a green haired figure rounded the corner ahead of her. Emerald.
The world froze around Scarlet. If Emerald saw her than she might realize that she had double crossed them and tell Cinder, or Scarlet could pretend to be her sister and hope she can go unnoticed.
She quickly ripped off her gold chain rose and stuffed it in her back pocket. She put on her best happy go lucky smile and made her eyes look as energetic as possible. She walked down the hallway with a slight skip in her step. It didn't take long for Emerald to lock eyes with her.
She looked distressed. Her hair was slightly disheveled, and her eyes were slightly erratic. She walked quickly and kept her head down clearly not trying to draw attention to herself.
"Hey!" She called after Scarlet quickly approaching her.
'Here we go…' Scarlet thought to herself. "I'm sorry, do I know you?" Scarlet asked in a near perfect Ruby impression.
"Oh umm…" Emerald stuttered clearly remembering that Scarlet had an identical twin in the school. "I'm Emerald." She introduced.
"Ruby Rose!" Scarlet falsely introduced.
"I know this is a little weird but, you look like a friend of mine, and I was wondering if I could ask you something… a little personal?" Emerald was unsure of every word she spoke and didn't make eye contact with Scarlet.
"I don't see why not." Scarlet responded knowing what was about to be asked of her.
Emerald looked deeply relived at Scarlet's answer. She took a deep breath and finally locked eyes with Scarlet. "You see, there's this person that I have known for a really long time, and I kinda owe my life to them, and they want me to do this thing that might hurt people." Emerald started. Scarlet was quick to connect Emerald liberal use of pronouns to the real people and actions she was referring to. "The thing is, I don't know if I can help them." She paused for a moment. "What should I do?" She asked desperate for an outside opinion.
"Hm, that's a tough one…" Scarlet stalled for her to come up with a response. "If you think that what this person wants you to do is going to haunt you than why spend time deciding whether or not you want to do it." She started trying to make her response sound elegant. "Our actions follow us forever, and a bad action will haunt you and bring you down, but a good one will make you and those around you better people." She stated after a short pause.
Emerald mulled over the statement for a minute before speaking up again. "Thanks. I think I know what to do now…" With that Emerald walked off.
Scarlet took a deep sigh of relief. "I hope that worked." She mumbled to herself. She then took her necklace out of her pocket and hung it around her neck again.
She continued her walk through the dorms and then through the campus ground towards the landing pads to catch a ship back to Vale. She had a big day tomorrow, a date with Weiss, a meeting with her father, and if she was lucky, a meeting with Emerald.
As for the rest of her day, Scarlet was going to go home watch a movie with her cat and go to bed early.
Next Chapter; The Date, The Hunt, The Swap
If you aren't a fan of me having Weiss and Scarlet start dating, than don't worry I plan on it being a really minor part of the story overall. The reason I decided to even have a romance plot in the first place was because I have never written one before, and I wanted to give my self a challenge.
Also fun fact; If you're writing two stories at once, do not swap between writing them at random, it will only slow you down on both stories.
Farewell for now!
