Damon in the Dark

Chapter 7

A growl tore from Klaus's throat as he stalked through Chicago in search of Damon. Katerina had said Damon had been left a house on the outskirts of town. He had spent the better half of the morning searching and had found nothing. Once Klaus found Damon, he would make him ever regret leaving his side. Storming inside the club in front of him Klaus collapsed onto a bar stool. He was seething with rage at having to give up the time he could have spent finding werewolves to find his mate. "It's been a long time since you've been in here. Are you looking for someone specific? Perhaps a wayward mate of yours." Glancing up Klaus saw the one and only Gloria. While to anyone else it would have seemed she was making conversation, Klaus knew better. She never said or did anything without a specific plain in mind. It kept her powerful and alive, but it also made Klaus trust her a lot less than he probably should.

"Where is he?" Klaus glared at her as if her very presence offended him. The words came out in a deep growl filled with curiosity and anger. Gloria swallowed thickly before placing a placating smile on her face. "I wouldn't know. One minute we were unlocking his memories and the next he had bolted like a bat out of hell. He didn't even tell me who locked his memories away." Klaus observed the age-old witch in front of him. If what she said was true than she had been the last one to truly see Damon. Add in the fact that she somehow discovered Damon to be her mate. Well, it just made her in Klaus's mind that is, more of a threat to him and to his family. A threat that would soon have to be either sworn to secrecy or eliminated from the equation. He could not let it get out that he had a mate. It would only serve to make people see him as weak and that was something he could not afford.

He had sent Elijah and Katerina to look for Damon on the other side of Chicago. They had not sent word to him on whether they had found him yet. Elijah would call him of that Klaus was sure. If he did not, then he would not be reunited with their siblings for a long while to come. Klaus would make sure that he was laying in a coffin right along side them until he had Damon under control. While Klaus was sure that it would not take long to control the wayward baby vampire, he was not taking any chances.

Damon sat staring at the waterfall intently in front of him. He had had trouble getting the conversation with his ancestors out of his head. No one has heard from him in over a hundred and sixty-four years. His father was missing and had been missing since shortly after his birth. Yet his father had left him a note claiming that Damon would see him again. So that begged the question in Damon's mind, Was his father alive? If he was alive, where was he and where had he been all these years? Damon was suddenly drove from his thoughts as his magic tingled on his skin. Concentrating on the feeling he realized it was alerting him to the fact that someone was fast approaching his location. Standing up quickly he took off towards the cottage as fast as he could.

Very few people knew about this location, in fact only three people knew that he was aware of. Zachariah had been one of the people who had known about it as had Kol but they were both gone. Zachariah was gone to old age, Kol was locked in a coffin by his brother and his father was missing and presumed dead. No one else should be aware of the houses location and it was so far in the forest it could not just be stumbled upon by accident. Reaching his house Damon tore to his room and grabbed his grimoire off his bedside table before peering through the window towards the forest. His magic said that the intruders were coming from that direction, and this seemed like a perfect time to practice.

His icy blue eyes scanned the forest slowly for any possible movement. The only thing he could see was the trees swaying from the softly blowing breeze. Suddenly he saw another movement out of the corner of his eye. Slowly turning Damon peered outside as he saw two people break through the tree line near the old well on the property. A spell was on the edge of his lips as they started walking towards the house. Just as he was about to start the spell, he heard something that made it die on his tongue. "Are you sure this is the place, Katerina?" Even if he had only heard it a few times Damon still could recognize that voice. It seemed as if Elijah had joined his brother on his little mission to become a hybrid.

Amusement suddenly bubbled up inside of him as he realized that Elijah probably did not even realize why he was searching for him. He doubted that Klaus would have told him the truth about their relationship. Damon was sure that neither of them knew about him being apart of the Faye line either. Well, weren't they going to be in for quite a surprise once they discovered the truth about him. He highly doubted that Kol had gotten the chance to tell them about him. If he had then Damon was sure that Klaus would have come to find him a lot sooner than he had. He was suddenly broken out of his thoughts as he heard Katherine speak up to answer Elijah.

"Of course, it is. If giving Damon to Klaus clears my debt with him than that's what I'll do." "And you won't feel anything knowing you have just traded one man's life for your own?" "Even if I didn't help Klaus find him Elijah, he would still find Damon. At least this way I have a chance of ensuring my survival. For right now that is what Damon is, a way to survive." The amusement Damon had been feeling suddenly died as he saw them heading towards the front door. Thinking quickly, Damon let a spell tear from his lips, the grass in front of Elijah and Katherine caught on fire easily. A triumphant grin spread across his lips as Elijah threw them both backwards to avoid the flames.

"Katerina." Elijah called out to the vampire behind him as he scanned the area around them for the witch that had caused the fire. Confusion filled him as he looked around and saw nothing out of place. "I-I-Idk. Elijah, I swear Zachariah never told me that the place was guarded or anything." Watching the house in front of them carefully, Elijah saw a flicker of movement at one of the windows. If he had not been watching then, he would have completely missed the brief shift of the curtains. "Mr. Salvatore I would appreciate you coming out so we can have a discussion. It seems you have caught my brother, Niklaus's eye. I would love to be enlightened as to the reasons why my brother seems so invested in your whereabouts." Elijah looked to the house as he started to slowly walk towards it. The flames had died down while Elijah had been speaking now only leaving behind the burnt forest floor.

He had no way to know if it was truly Damon inside the small house but, he had reason to believe the boy was something truly extraordinary. After all, Niklaus would not hunt down someone who held little importance to him. Even when hunting Rose and Trevor down, Niklaus had not truly been looking. Had they crossed his path he surely would have killed them but, he was not going out of his way to search for them. The curtain flickered again before Damon materialized in front of Elijah's very eyes. Damon pushed the burning rage he felt towards Klaus down as he faced Elijah. "What could you possibly wish to discuss with me?" Damon slowly started to walk closer before stopping less than 5 feet from him.

"Oh, many a topic has crossed my mind. One has made me curious though and that would be the one that is most troubling as well. What use could my brother possibly have for you?" Damon allowed a smirk to grace his face as Elijah posed the question to him. So, he had been right, Klaus hadn't told him the truth about their relationship. It seemed there was only two possible explanations as to why that was. Either a) Klaus was embarrassed and angered about the mating bond or b) He didn't trust his family to know the truth behind their connection. Damon would go with answer A as it seemed to be more likely if his past actions were anything to go by.

"I don't know what Klaus wants with me. Why don't you ask him yourself?" Damon could lie to anyone and everyone he needed to without question. Except, Elijah it seemed as a look of pure disbelief crossed the Originals eyes. "Is that so? Well, I shall ask him about your connection once we are all together again." The fury he had been squashing down inside of him suddenly, returned tenfold. "Yeah, that's not happening." A growl tore from his throat as he stepped back towards the house. "I don't think you understand Damon. My brother will not allow you to stay in peace. When he wants something, he generally tends to get it as seen by Miss Gilbert. If you do not want your brother to suffer by his hand than I suggest you join us."

The anger he felt burned hotter in his veins at the mere mention of his brother being hurt by his mate. "Fine." Damon raced in the house and grabbed the bag he had been keeping his grimoire in. The bag also held clothes that had been his fathers, herbs, crystals and journals that he had found tucked under his fathers' bed. The journals contained many things, but they mainly contained his father's thoughts and advice for Damon. He was not leaving them behind. If Klaus didn't like it then they would all find out quickly if a hybrid could die by being staked through the heart. Damon was sure that they couldn't, but one never knew what loopholes Mother Nature left for her creatures. He could have just used his magic to get away from them and avoid Klaus. That would not work in his favor though, as the less they knew about his power right now the better. After all, if Klaus found out about his magic than who knows what he would try to convince him to do.

"Damon!" The voice rang through the house from the outside as Damon was heading out. He closed his eyes forcing himself to take calming breaths in and out to prepare for seeing his mate again. Knowing Klaus, he would try and do something just as controlling or violent as the last time. Only this time Damon was ready, and he wasn't going to take Klaus's behavior lying down. It was time for Klaus to see why Damon and him had been paired up as mates. He would see the truth of who and what his mate truly was once and for all.

When he finally saw the truth Damon would make sure his ancestors were by his side helping him along the way. With a little luck as well, he would find out the truth behind his father's disappearance and get the answers he was seeking. One answer in particular anyway, Where had his father been and why had his ancestors chosen him to restore their coven?
