Summary: Buck was raised by his grandparents because he was Fae, just like his grandmother Shayla. Buck finally reached his magic awakening, where it would be unbound. He'd grown up hearing the stories of soulmates, which was rare. He never wanted it to happen to him, and then he met Eddie Diaz. But there were still things his grandmother had never told him.

He'd gone to visit his grandparents on his Fae magic day. It was when his magic would be unbound. He'd been raised by his maternal grandparents. He didn't remember his brother Daniel and wasn't aware of its devastating consequences for his parents and sister.

It turned out the reason he couldn't save his brother was that he wasn't human. When his mother turned out purely human, they never taught her about the Fae. Her sister was never told either when she didn't turn out to be one either.

When his family were dealing with the death of Daniel, he went to live with relatives. It turned out he did well there. He was excelling in school and making friends.

They decided that it was best for him to stay where he was. They explained to Evan that they felt so guilty because everything was so concentrated on Daniel that they hadn't spent enough time with him to really connect.

The Buckley's wanted their son to be happy and knew he wouldn't be with them. Phillip and Margaret hadn't put Evan first. This time they were going to. They talked every week and built a relationship, but it wouldn't be as close as parents and their children should be.

As he grew up, he found out why they wanted him with them. His grandmother Shayla was Fae, who came to this realm to visit. It was a kind of pilgrimage, and fell in love. Only those who had Fae genetics or mates could be told. When one parent was a Fae and the other human, it was a lottery. It could be missed for generations until it emerged again. In this case, it emerged in Evan Buckley.

They bound his powers unless he had lessons to learn how to use his magic. They wanted to make sure the children didn't use magic in this realm accidentally, and with all the learning, he grew up with the stories. The one his grandmother loved was about soulmates. She had never met any that it had happened to. Shayla was just happy to have met and fallen in love with Lucas. It was extremely rare though, and you didn't need to be with them. You weren't forced into it; you were just perfect for each other in every way.

Evan was determined to fall in love like his grandparents. But really, what was the likelihood of him having a soulmate. It was only for special people, which he wasn't.

Buck walked into work. Chim, Hen and Bobby were staring at someone.

"Hey, what's going on?" That was when Buck saw him. Whoever this guy was, he was his soulmate. He could feel it, and just for a moment, there was a light reaching between them before it faded. Buck hated him. There was no way he was ever going to accept this guy, no matter how attractive he was. There had to be more than physical attraction, and anything more wasn't going to happen.

Eddie Diaz was finally glad to start at the 118. Everyone else seemed to be great. They had been friendly and welcoming. Then there was Buck.

He should leave the other guy alone. He knew that Buck didn't want to know him, but there was something about him. There was a connection. He'd never felt this before. Eddie was determined to become Buck's friend; he had no idea why this was so important to him. He just knew it was.

Buck looked over at his sister. She had crashed out; something had gone on with Doug. Maddie was here and not talking about him. He could sense a pang of sadness and fear about her and the main thing was she felt safe here. He would do anything he could to protect her.

Buck watched as Eddie explained that the guy had a live grenade in his thigh. He couldn't let the other man go and do there this alone.

"I'll go with him," Buck wondered when his mouth stopped communicating with his brain. Well, if you asked anyone that knew him, said they'd never communicated.

It wasn't long before they were back in the ambulance. Buck was worried that it would explode. He thought about a protection bubble, and it surrounded the grenade. It would stay safe until he released the spell.

He couldn't help being attracted to Eddie as he dealt with the grenade, it was hot. That man was so calm under in dangerous situation. It drew him in and wouldn't let him go. They worked well as a team, which he never expected. Buck saw both men sigh in relief once it was out of the victim's leg and into the container.

When they'd climbed out, the relief on Bobby's face was evident. The paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital.

"You can have my back any day," Eddie smiled at him.

"Or you could have mine," Buck expected the other man to disagree, and act macho but his smile just got bigger. He felt something loosen inside. No matter what he did, Eddie pulled him in.

As they were about to walk away, Buck decided it was time to break the spell. The moment he did, the ambulance blew up.

Eddie tried to look innocent as it exploded. Buck and Bobby had ducked.

"Food?" He was thrilled that Buck seemed to be more accepting of him. He just hoped he was nice to his son, Christopher. There was no one more important in his life than his son.

A few days had passed, and the two men had become closer. They were on their way to being good friends. Then the world began to shake. Everything was crashing around them.

Buck had tumbled to the ground. He managed to stumble to his feet as he moved from one side to the other as the earthquake carried on.

"Come on this way." He yelled as he helped his teammates to safety. Then he glanced around. Buck had tried to remember where Eddie had been.

That was when he saw Hen, he followed her eyes. Eddie was on his back on a creeper wheel board. The wheels on it were sliding him around.

Buck looked up and could see gear about to collapse on him. He mumbled a spell that slowed them down enough for Hen to pull Eddie out of the way. He took a deep breath and relaxed.

Once it settled down, Eddie walked over smiling and nudged his arm.

"Good to see you're okay, Buck."

"You too. Let's hope we can help see a lot more people are okay out there." It was going to be hell, and everyone would need their help. Buck looked over at Eddie, who was now frowning down at his cell. "Eddie?"

"Hmm, I'm fine." He walked off to get ready and get out there.

"Who are you trying to get hold of?" Buck asked, ignoring the jealousy he felt. He kept trying to tell himself that the only thing he wanted was friendship.

"My son Christopher, I'm all he's got," Eddie didn't understand why he wanted Buck to know that he was single. He turned his cell to show a photo to Buck.

"Really, I love kids. He's so adorable." In the photo was the cutest kid he'd ever seen. "He's in school?" Eddie nodded. "The school's upgraded everything. He's in the safest place."

"Thanks." Eddie desperately wanted to believe him.

Shayla and Lucas stared out of the window. They loved their house. It made them feel safe. They'd done what they could to protect it. But their worry wasn't about them. It was about their grandson Evan.

"We need to tell him," Shayla sighed.

"I agree, but how do you explain that. Hey Evan, you need to know that you're part of the Fae royal family. The Fae that called themselves 'Purebloods' hate at how the royal family believed in love no matter who it was with. A lot of the families were slaughtered. The rest of them went into hiding."

"Considering you're human, you remembered that well. You know that messenger that came?" Shayla asked.

"Yes, I was waiting for you to be ready to tell me," Lucas smiled at his wife.

"The 'Purebloods' want to end the fighting by marrying one of them to a member of our family. We're hiding all over the world. Who knows who'll they'll go after."

"You're worried about a grandson?"

"Yes, you know how powerful he is. He's the right age and attractively appealing. You know his birthmark?"

Lucas sighed. It was so frustrating at times that he'd learn things slowly and over the years. He did understand that it was about a different species and realm.

"What should I know now?"

"It wasn't important, really, until that last message. Not everyone knows, but birthmarks on a Fae's face are rare, and they will be exceptionally powerful."

"So if a 'Pureblood' was to marry and control a member of the royal family, a powerful one would be the best choice. But having human family members, they would be treated like a slave?"

"As long as he hasn't found and united with his soulmate, they couldn't do that then. The link is too powerful."

"They would just kill him. How likely is it he would find a soulmate? It's rare, right?" Lucas wished he could protect his grandson.

"It's just a little rarer than having a birthmark on your face," Shayla laughed.

"If anyone could have a soulmate, it would be Evan."

"Yes, it would be. I'll give him a call. I need to decide what he needs to know now and what could wait until we meet in person."

Buck started to make his way down the elevator shaft, Ali on his back. Then everything started to shake again. He looked up saw sparks from the elevator above him. He started to go faster.

"Buck, get your ass down here," Eddie yelled, panic in his voice.

The elevator started to fall. He saw the spell in his mind. It helped push his body a little harder and then flew through the doors and landed on the floor.

"See, I knew we could do it." Buck grinned at Eddie.

Eddie just glared at him and fought the urge to kiss him.

Buck just smiled and was glad that he had abilities. He had no idea why he could do some spells in his mind, and others needed to be verbal. Being in the human realm, he didn't use his hands for other magic spells as they could be seen.

Buck had once told his grandparents that he could do magic in different ways. He remembered they just stared at him. It took years for him to learn. It meant he was powerful. They had never met a Fae who could do a spell in his mind. Now he had his magic, and it wasn't locked away. He was going to become stronger. That thought terrified him. How powerful could he become? Buck didn't want to accidentally hurt anyone.

It had been a long day. They'd found Hen and the little girl. They'd lost a firefighter, which was hard for everyone. Hen had talked to him, and there was nothing she could do to save him. It was why she had become a firefighter, and every time it was difficult to deal with.

When they got back and changed, all Buck wanted to do was go home and relax. When he walked outside, he saw Eddie. His car was stuck behind a fallen tree

"Eddie?"

"I need to pick up my son." He waved a hand at his car.

"I'll take you, come on," Buck offered and walked towards his jeep.

"Thank you so much, Buck. I really appreciate it. If you need anything, just ask."

"It's okay. I'm glad I can help."

The drive to the school was quiet. There was destruction all around them.

As soon as he stopped, Eddie ran up the steps. Buck couldn't help but smile as Eddie hugged his son, and Christopher had the biggest grin on his face. This was the first moment he accepted that he was falling for Eddie Diaz. How could he not? The man was already impressive and seeing him with his son and his heart filled with love.

He answered his cell as soon as it rang. "Hey, grandma."

"Evan, we need to talk. It's important. Fae royal family important.

"Who is the Fae royal family?"

Shayla sighed. "We are Evan, we are."
