The fluffy double date chapter with no angst whatsoever.
"Do you think this is ever going to get old?" Seth asked as Morgan straightened their tie.
"What?"
"Stealing these gentle, intimate moments. Going on dates. The casual domestic stuff."
"What, bored of me already?" Morgan asked with a laugh.
"I don't think I could ever be bored of you. You shine brighter than light pollution. But sometimes I worry that you're gonna get bored of me."
"Well, you don't have to worry about that. I will never get bored of you. But if I did… I'd just go and date your sister."
Seth burst out laughing, "That had better be a joke, Morgan Helena."
"It is, I promise!" Morgan laughed too and then sobered as they headed out to the car, "It does bring up an interesting question, though…"
"What, about relationships and monotony?"
"No, about polyamory. What's your take on that, babe?"
"Huh." Seth slid into the driver's seat and turned on the car while they turned over the question in their head. Then they gave Morgan a thumbs up without saying anything else.
Morgan was equally unreadable, it was hard to tell if she was surprised or upset by that answer until she spoke.
"Me too. I say, whatever happens, happens, as long as it's mutual, as long as it's something we agree on together. I think we'll be together forever, Seth. But I thought that about Tadashi too. We don't know what will happen in the future, I'm just glad we're both open to waiting and seeing."
"I'd wait and see forever with you, sugar."
"Me too. And if we happen to meet some really suave person who sweeps us both off our feet…"
"We'll get a king-size bed."
"We'll get a king-size bed." And that was that, for the rest of the drive. Morgan didn't say anything but she knew her otherwise supportive parents might not exactly understand polyamory at first, not that she owed her dad information about her life anyway, but she and Seth would cross that bridge if they got there. For now, they were happy as a dynamic duo. Morgan hoped they could stay that happy forever, come what may.
"I thought you weren't gonna be here," Seth said, studying their sister and feigning disappointment.
"I got Booker to cover my shift."
"We should have just gone to the bar while you worked and you could have gotten us free drinks," Morgan said.
"Morgan, babe, you're practically asking my manager to fire me. I can't give drinks to every hot person who comes in."
"Aww, you think I'm hot?"
"Like the sun. Or like Seth's face right now."
"I'm not having fun with the whole, my girlfriend and my sister flirt with each other bit," Seth said.
"Don't worry Seth," Sadie said, "It's not a bit. I'm genuinely flirting with your girlfriend. To annoy you."
"I'm not above making out with Bennet," Seth warned.
"I'm not above helping them do that," Bennet warned. He wasn't the least bit attracted to Morgan or Seth, but he was very dedicated to the Drake family drama and he would play for either team.
"This is getting old," Dalton interrupted, "New date night rules, you can only flirt with people you were already dating at the beginning of date night. And date night has begun, so no switcheroos now."
"Aww, babe, I would never switch you with anyone." Sadie leaned over and kissed Dalton.
"I know," Dalton said, "my love is not fragile. If my partners want to flirt with other people I'm not going to fall apart. But let's treat dates as sacred." A lot of things were sacred for Dalton. Dates, football, cooking, and banana bread. He liked the routines he had formed and always felt a little stupid if his friends and partners didn't take the same things as seriously.
They grabbed a booth and sat down, beginning to chat about Seth's new job. That was the hot topic of the day, at least. Krei was a bore to work for so everyone was interested to hear how Liv Amara compared. It was pretty clear that Liv Amara was way better, not half as
"The only thing," Seth admitted, "is that I'm not sure what we're doing."
"What do you mean you don't know what you're doing?" Sadie asked with a laugh.
"I know what I'm doing, I work with the other engineers to make sure things are running smoothly throughout the day. I don't know what the company is doing. I suppose someone somewhere is innovating, but I couldn't for the life of me tell you what that innovation is."
"Maybe you should ask," Dalton said, "It's important for everyone on the team to know the plays."
"Can you put the metaphor in cooking terms?" Seth asked, teasing a little but not maliciously.
"It's important for all the cooks to know the recipe."
"That's a good metaphor. And a good suggestion. I'll see what I can figure out and I'll talk to Liv if I can't figure it out. Or Chris, I suppose. But I don't really want to talk to Chris."
"Who's Chris?" Sadie asked. Morgan had already heard all about Chris, but not from Seth. Wasabi had been gushing about the man since Wednesday.
"Liv's assistant. He kind of creeps me out."
"How? What did he do? Did he say something to you?" Everyone at that table would fight for Seth's honor, but it was flower boy Bennet who offered to throw hands now.
"No, he just feels fake. Artificial. Like a Ken doll injected with toxic positivity."
"Beats toxic masculinity," Sadie muttered, and the conversation shifted to the topic of regulars who drove Sadie crazy. Complaining about their jobs wasn't exactly romantic, but it was cathartic and it did bring the five of them closer as a group. And they all had plenty to complain about.
Despite spending a good portion of the date complaining, Morgan was in high spirits as they headed home.
"What a gorgeous fucking night," Morgan said, and Seth immediately knew what was coming next.
"Going on a flight?"
"As long as you don't mind."
"I don't control you, babe."
"I could take you with me," Morgan said with a grin.
"Take the baseball bat, instead. I'm just gonna brew some tea and make sure the house is tidy enough for tomorrow.
"What's tomorrow?"
Seth laughed, "You're kidding, right?"
"Sorry, I guess whatever it is slipped my mind?"
"Your mom is coming over tomorrow! It's the first time she's coming over to the new house and the first time we've done lunch together since you and I started dating. Everything has to be perfect."
Now it was Morgan's turn to laugh.
"Seth, babe, things do not have to be perfect. My mom would probably be confused if they were."
"What does that mean?" Seth asked, freezing up.
"I mean, we're hardly the perfect couple."
"But you said we'd last forever," Seth said, blinking back tears. That was when Morgan knew she fucked up.
"Of course we will! That's not what I meant, Seth-"
"You should go on your flight," Seth mumbled, ready to curl in on themself.
"Seth, no, I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that."
"You said I was perfect to you. Was that just a line?"
"You are perfect to me. I just said we weren't a perfect couple because, well, we're not exactly conventional…"
"Fuck conventions! We're literally criminals. We still deserve to be happy. Tell me you meant what you said about forever and I'll believe you. Tell me you meant it. Tell me it wasn't just flirting for you."
Morgan pulled Seth into her arms.
"It's never just flirting with me, not when you're the one I'm flirting with. I love you, Seth. We've all been on edge since the catastrophe but it's going to be okay. We're going to be okay. We'll last forever." Morgan didn't say that she couldn't actually promise that, that she didn't know, that she couldn't know. She wanted to make all of Seth's worries melt away, but life was unpredictable and Morgan had the sinking feeling that something big was coming.
Oh, whoops, some angst slipped in. Is Seth insecure because this is the only truly serious relationship they've ever been in, or is some serious shit going down? I guess we'll see!
Also, I promise I'm letting go of the "flirting with my sibling's partner bit" I think it's like, fine, if everyone is okay with it but I'm tired of writing it lmao
