Morgan wasn't a crazy obsessed fan who would stalk her faves to the ends of the earth. DJ Parasite wanted to maintain anonymity and Morgan would normally respect that. Normally. But this time it was a matter of Seth and San Fransokyo's safety, so privacy be damned.
Morgan rationalized this by reminding herself of the time Big Hero 6 had broken into her apartment just because she'd stolen a little bit of money from a rich asshole and donated it to charity. GoGo had been the one who taught her to pick locks, after all. She was pretty sure the vigilantes would be okay with her breaking and entering for the good of mankind.
Kei Tanaka was not okay with it.
"WHAT THE HOLY FUCK?! BOB THERE ARE GHOSTS BREAKING INTO THE APARTMENT!" Morgan made herself not invisible. That did not de-escalate the situation.
"Please don't kill me, metal angel ghost," Her idol requested.
Morgan pulled her face mask off, "I'm here for Bob." It was hard to sound badass while saying the name "Bob." The baseball bat helped a little.
"Oh. Who are you?"
"The Angel of Vengeance."
"Ah, the arbiter of justice," Obake said, appearing in the door, wearing a fluffy robe and holding a steaming mug, "Couldn't you have arbited at a less ungodly hour?"
"No." Morgan gave no fucks.
"So you know each other. Great. Do you want some tea, Vengeance?" Kei was used to chaos and decided to just roll with it. Obake wasn't afraid, so she wouldn't be afraid either.
"I don't drink tea."
"Coffee then." Used to chaos or not, it was late, and Kei kind of wanted to make herself scarce.
"Don't make her coffee," Obake said, "She broke in. She doesn't deserve it." But Kei was not listening to him.
"I know what you did," Morgan growled.
"That's curious because I don't know what I did."
"Don't play coy, you kidnapped my partner."
Now Obake, who had been attempting to remain stoic and in control, looked surprised.
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Your robot threatened my partner, back when the catastrophe happened. You must have figured out we stole your tech and so you sent someone to kidnap them as revenge."
"Why would I care about you stealing my stolen tech? I don't give a shit about that. I'm rebuilding my broken empire from the couch of a B-list criminal. I wouldn't waste my precious time chasing after a C-list criminal."
"Did you just call me a B-list criminal?" Kei asked, coming back with two mugs of coffee and offering Morgan one. Morgan was too sleep-deprived to be cautious and took a long sip.
"Yes, but you're still better than Vengeance over here. If you hadn't broken into my new lair I wouldn't have wasted another thought on you. You're mediocre. Old news. You and your partner in crime do not concern me."
"You have an impressive set of armor, though," Kei said kindly, "and don't let Bob fool you. It's my lair. He's a grifter."
"I'm not a grifter. I'm just rebuilding."
"I've seen better," Kei taunted playfully. Morgan, uninvited, sank onto Kei's couch.
"So you don't know where Seth is?"
"I barely remembered their name," Obake said.
"No, no, this was my only lead…" Morgan set down her mug and put her head in her hands. Kei picked up the mug, put a coaster under it, and then sat next to Morgan, putting a comforting hand on Morgan's shoulder.
"Hey, it's okay sweetie… One criminal to another, we'll help you find your partner…"
"What? No, we won't," Obake protested, "Morgan broke in. We don't owe her anything. She was ready to bash my brains in with a baseball bat."
"You deserved it. You psychologically tortured a fourteen-year-old," Morgan snapped.
Kei looked at him, "Really?"
"Only a little bit…" Obake said with a shrug. Kei kicked him from her spot next to Morgan.
"Ow."
"You deserved that," Kei said, "No wonder I'm the only villain in the city who would let you move in."
"You're the only villain in the city who hasn't been arrested or mutated," Obake said.
"Mutated?" Morgan asked, her eyes widening.
"Oh, yes, bizarre things are happening. My old associate, Momakase, got turned into some sort of wolverine. And of course, there are the crime dancers, they never worked with me but I kept tabs on them. There's something fishy going on with them. I don't know who set up the monster factory but clearly, someone else is trying to build an empire. Which is why we've got to lie low, Kei."
"No, we've got to fight back. What if Seth is the next person to get mutated?" Morgan's anger returned, holding hands with her heartache.
"That doesn't concern me even a little bit," Obake stated.
"Heartless bastard," Morgan choked out, so tired and overwhelmed, close to tears.
"You're right. But that doesn't concern me either."
"I'll help you," Kei said, "just ignore the big grump. It's going to be okay, Morgan. We're going to find Seth."
"Really?" Morgan asked, tearing up.
"Really. Now you get home and get some rest, here's my business card with my number, we can meet up tomorrow and come up with a game plan then. Don't worry about Obake, his buffoonery doesn't have to affect us gals. We'll get brunch and figure out how to save Seth. Just be sure to get some sleep and be thinking of any leads you haven't thought of."
"Kei, what are you doing?" Obake asked.
"Whatever I want to. I'm a B-list criminal who hasn't gotten caught yet, and my name is on the lease. What are you doing?"
"I'm fixing the lock and going to bed," Obake grumbled.
"That's what I thought. Bye, sweetie, maybe don't fly sleep-deprived."
Morgan flashed a tired thumbs up and stumbled out of the apartment. Miraculously she made it home, sent Kei a text about brunch, and then managed to get a few hours of restless sleep, still wearing her wings.
Waking up alone was excruciating. Morgan felt around for Seth and then gave Lulu and Beans some affection before getting up the nerve to check her phone. Last night felt like a fever dream or a fanfic, so she was surprised to find an actual response from DJ Parasite.
Kei said she was up for brunch so Morgan dragged herself out of bed, fed the cats, took off the wings, and got in the shower. It would be inappropriate to bring the baseball bat to brunch, so Morgan slipped her taser flashlight into her bag just in case.
Bennet had texted her as well, asking if Seth had turned up. Morgan sent him a thumbs down, unable to muster the courage to type more and admit she has failed. If DJ Parasite wasn't her idol, she wouldn't have even accepted Kei's help. It was still hard to believe that she deserved help. She did need to eat food though. If Kei couldn't help, then at least Morgan would get to eat some real food.
Kei had been in pajamas last night so Morgan wasn't sure what her hero dressed like outside of break-in situations. Morgan was wearing a large gray NASA hoodie and galaxy print leggings. She hadn't done her makeup but she had, at the last minute, put in little UFO earrings. Seth always teased her about her space outfits. Seth always told her that those galaxy leggings made her ass look out of this world. Morgan walked to brunch and tried not to cry.
Kei was wearing a pretty floral sundress and smiled at Morgan, waving her over, her smile putting Morgan at ease a little bit.
"Good morning, dear, feeling better?"
"A little… I think food will help."
"Food usually helps," Kei agreed.
They ordered their food and some drinks and soon Morgan was sipping on a mimosa. That was when the questions started.
"Before we get to work on finding Seth, I do have one question."
"Yes?" Morgan was a little nervous, afraid that the rug was about to be pulled out from under her.
"How did you find my address?"
"Oh, that wasn't that hard. I saw Bob in your Instagram post and then I went back to a spyware program he infected Krei Tech with and tracked him through that. I honestly had a very small chance of that actually working, so let's be glad that he was able to hold on to some of his research."
"Wait," Kei said, eyes lighting up with recognition, "you're the fanfic girl!"
"What?"
"Just like you were able to access Bob through the spyware, Bob was able to access you, he was able to see the documents on your computer, including the DJ Parasite fanfic you wrote. He showed me when he moved in. Doesn't it start like… Once upon a time, there was a girl named Morgan-"
"Who was DJ Parasite's very biggest fan, yes I remember, that's me." Morgan was deeply embarrassed.
"I was flattered," Kei said with a smile.
"Anyway, we should probably get to work…" Morgan had already finished her first mimosa.
"Agreed. Where's the last place you saw them?"
"At home, before they left for work."
"Where do they work?"
"Sycorax."
"Oh shit," Kei said, as their food was placed down and their drinks were replaced.
"What?" Morgan was now more panicked than she had been at the beginning of brunch.
"Oh, no, sorry, nothing bad, probably. I just know Liv Amara. We were friends. Sort of. It's not important-" Morgan lurched across the table and grabbed Kei's shoulders.
"It's very important! You could ask Liv if she knows what happened to Seth! Sorry…" Morgan realized she was causing a scene and let go of Kei's shoulders.
"Oh, yeah, yeah I guess I could. I'm not really on speaking terms with Liv right now, though."
"Please? Seth is the most important thing in the world to me. I'll do anything for you-"
Kei quickly held up her hand, "Okay, I will, but not for payment, okay? Not for favors or IOUs. There's nothing better in the world than having someone who truly loves you and would do anything for you. You and Seth clearly have that... I'll help you find them. I'll make plans to talk to Liv first thing tomorrow morning unless something happens. If you know anyone else you could ask about Seth then that should be your next move."
"Yeah, actually, I do go to school with one person who works for Sycorax…" Morgan put down her mimosa glass and picked up the water. She'd need to be at least a little bit sober if she was actually going to go to classes today, even if it was only to track down the other teen genius.
This is not April Fool's! The crossover of the century has begun, the crime family is falling into place. It's all coming together.
I was so excited to write this chapter and the excitement doesn't stop here, I'm really, really excited for the next few chapters!
I'm kind of following my own bullshit timeline for City of Monsters, so everything is going to happen very fast from here on out.
