"Morgan? Sugar?"
Morgan was in the master bathroom getting dressed after her shower while Seth lounged on the bed, not having to go to work until Kei's late-night show. Morgan had a few hours before work as well, and her classes had been canceled since so many of her classmates were dealing with last-minute projects and papers. Having no such projects to deal with herself, Morgan had hoped to take it easy today and forget about her problems.
Unfortunately, she forgot that other people had problems too.
"What's up, babe?"
"Do you know if Booker left for the day?'
"I think he went to run some errands but he should be back around lunch. You're both working tonight so I'll probably have a girls' night with the cats. Why?"
"Because I want to talk about him."
Morgan poked her head out of the bathroom, studying Seth, who lay on their stomach without a shirt.
"You want to gossip about Booker?"
"Not gossip, just a discussion."
"Okay, what's on your mind?" Morgan asked before beginning to brush her teeth.
"I think I want to get a king-sized bed," Seth said.
"Hm?"
"I mean, it's just… The way Booker has integrated himself into our lives reminds me a lot of how you and I went from friends to roommates to lovers."
Morgan spat her toothpaste in the sink.
"You love him?"
"Don't you?"
"I mean, yeah, platonically. I haven't thought about him in any other way, Seth. I'm comfortable with him, sure. I'm glad he lives with us. But love? I'd need more time to think about it."
"It's fine, Morgan, and if you don't feel the same we can just forget I said anything, but I'd like to talk about it, at least-" At that moment, the doorbell rang. Repeatedly.
"Ugh. I'll put on a shirt and see who it is, you finish getting ready." Seth shimmied into a tank top, careful of their wings, and headed to the front door.
Morgan took a deep breath and finished getting ready, wearing a short-sleeved galaxy print crop top and her purple varsity jacket over a pair of high-waisted denim shorts. This was fine. Her outfit was fine, her relationship was fine, and she didn't have to think about every little thing right this second.
"You can't just come crashing into our lives every time you have a problem!" Seth shouted and Morgan decided that she couldn't just hide in the bedroom forever.
Outside, Simon was playing with Lulu and Beans while Seth and Sadie yelled at him.
"Yeah, bozo, we all have problems! I'm trying to propose to my boyfriends, I can't just hang around waiting for you to knock some sense into your own brain."
"I just need a place to lay low while I avoid that stupid, overzealous cop," Simon said.
"Well you can't stay with me," Sadie and Seth said at the same time before turning on each other.
"Why can't he stay with you?" Sadie demanded.
"I'm going through some things right now," Seth said, glancing at Morgan who looked away, focusing on the toaster where she'd started a bagel.
"Like a fight? Are you two fighting?" Sadie asked.
"No," Morgan said quickly, spreading cream cheese on her bagel.
"No, we're just making plans for the future," Seth said, "And right now those plans do not include Simon."
"Maybe you missed the part where I said that I was planning for a proposal," Sadie said.
"I could help with that," Simon spoke up.
"If I'm going to ask anyone here for help it's going to be Morgan," Sadie said, glancing at Morgan, who was halfway out the door with her bagel.
"I can't deal with Drake drama today," Morgan muttered to herself when she was far enough away to breathe. After she'd eaten her breakfast she called someone who wasn't caught up in all of that nonsense.
"Morning, Morgan, what's up?" Kei asked on the other end.
"I'm feeling kind of overwhelmed at home, can I come there?"
"Uh… Here's not the calmest place, sweetie. Obake and Trina are trying to channel her genocidal rage into a less harmful outlet."
"Ah. Well, that's good, I guess."
"But I'm totally free until my show tonight, how about we meet up and do some window shopping and you can vent to me?"
"You don't have to listen to all my stupid problems," Morgan protested.
"Nonsense, I want to."
"Alright, that'd be great, Kei, thank you."
Thirty minutes later, they were walking around the shopping district downtown, ready to spill the tea.
"Okay, what's going on in Morgantown?"
"Ugh, there's so much going on in Morgantown. I'm about to graduate, which is great, but that means more projects and stuff."
"That's not all that's bothering you about graduating, is it?" Kei guessed.
"No," Morgan said sadly.
"Well, graduating is pretty scary. Facing the unknown after college takes a lot of bravery. But I know you're ready for it."
"That's the thing, Kei, the unknown isn't what I'm afraid of. It's the well-known that scares me."
"I'm not following, dear."
"My dad is coming for my graduation. It was just gonna be my half-sister Holly and maybe her boyfriend, but now he's coming too and I'm a little freaked out. I've never gotten along super well with my dad, 'cause of the whole leaving when I was a child to be with his secret family thing."
"Yeah, that's bound to damage a relationship."
"And I don't hate him anymore, but I'm not close with him. I'm afraid that something will happen when he's here, that it'll be awkward or he'll judge my life choices or something like that."
"It sounds like he wants to have a father-daughter relationship with you, Morgan, and you just have to decide if that's something you want. Either way, you'll have to talk to him, and discuss the ground rules and your boundaries."
"Yeah. It's been so long that I think I'm willing to try to have a relationship with him. If nothing else, it'll be good for Holly if he and I get along better. I'll be going up to see all of them for her graduation, a couple of weeks after mine."
"Remember that you'll have people who love and support you no matter what happens with your dad."
"Thanks, Kei."
"What else is on your mind?"
"A couple of things that all got tangled up. But it's not like, the happiest topic, so we don't have to talk about it."
"You can tell me anything," Kei decided, "but only if you're comfortable with it."
Morgan took a deep breath and nodded.
"To get the full story we have to go back a bit. You might not know this, but Seth and I haven't actually been dating that long. We've been together for less than a year. We've been friends for way longer, but when I started college I had a boyfriend named Tadashi."
Kei frowned, "I've heard that name."
"That's not surprising. Tadashi died a hero during the fire at SFIT. You might also know his younger brother, Hiro, who founded Big Hero 6. We both lost Tadashi, so, recently, we've tried to be there for each other. He's like a brother to me."
"I'm so sorry you've already had to go through that kind of loss at your age."
"Thank you. It's been difficult, but it's gotten easier. I've just been trying to live my life in a way that makes me feel happy and fulfilled while keeping his memory alive. I think I've done a pretty good job of it, too. Honestly, the hardest thing I've done so far was starting to date again. I wondered if I'd moved on too quickly, or if I was letting him down. Eventually, I just had to give myself permission to live life, 'cause he would want me to be happy, I think."
"I think he would."
"It took Hiro a while to agree with that, but he's come around, too."
"That's good."
"That brings us to several of my current problems and insecurities," Morgan said with a long dramatic sigh.
"Lay it on me," Kei said, smiling supportively at Morgan.
"I honestly don't know where to start. Graduation coming up means that I'm hitting another milestone without Tadashi. All of his friends are feeling it too, but Hiro's dealing with it the most. He's going to be giving a speech and accepting Tadashi's diploma and he asked if I'd help with the speech. I want to, but I know it'll be emotional."
"If you don't think you can help him, I'm sure Hiro would understand."
"But I still want to be there for him. I feel like it's the least I can do."
"You can be there for him, just make sure to take care of yourself, okay?" Kei prompted.
"I will, don't worry. I told Hiro I needed time to think about it. That's what I've been telling everyone, lately. I just need time to think about everything."
"What else are you thinking about?" Kei asked.
"Booker. This morning, out of the blue, Seth asked me if I wanted to open our relationship up to Booker. And I mean, we've talked about polyamory before and we're both okay with it if we meet the right person. But all that talking happened before the mutations. No matter how much time passes, I can't help feeling like I just got Seth back, that I was so close to losing them that I just have to hold them close. And when I start feeling like that I think about Tadashi and how I didn't hold him close enough, which is wrong I know, but I can't help feeling that way. And Booker… Booker would be the first guy I've dated since Tadashi. Seth was different, Seth was my longtime friend and crush, and dating them felt natural, despite my insecurities. But I just met Booker, and even if I'm falling for him, which is a big if, I'd feel like it was a betrayal of Tadashi."
"Wow, that's a lot," Kei commented before falling silent for a minute, trying to figure out the best way to reassure Morgan.
"Morgan, I don't know what to tell you. Your circumstances are extreme, you've been through so much. All I can tell you is that old loves never go away, and it's not a crime to find new loves despite how deep and real the old ones were. To be honest, when I worked with Liv, the real Liv, I was in love with her. And when she shut me out, due to her illness, I was tormented by the feelings I'd had for her. Opening myself up to loving Bob felt like a betrayal too. But life is so much more nuanced than that. You can carry your old love with you while you find new ones."
"That… That makes sense. Follow-up question."
"Yes?" Kei was expecting another question about loss or love.
"How old are you?"
"Oh! I'm 26."
"Holy shit," the soon-to-be 24-year-old said, her eyes widening in surprise.
"Yeah a lot of people think I'm older than I am."
"I thought you were an immortal siren who came to bless the world with EDM."
Kei threw back her head and laughed, "I'm using that to advertise all my shows from now on. But yeah, I'm 26."
Morgan looked a little embarrassed, which Kei picked up on immediately.
"Don't worry, I'm still happy being the group mom. And as the group mom, can I offer you one more piece of advice about the whole Booker thing?"
"Absolutely," Morgan said, taking a moment to appreciate how cool it was that she was getting advice from her idol.
"You really should talk to Seth about all of this. Booker's not your partner yet but Seth is. So you need to tell them how you feel."
"What if I'm not sure, entirely, how I feel?"
"Well, you can tell them that too. But whatever you do, you need to talk to them."
"Yeah, I do, thank you, Kei."
"You're more than welcome, dear. That's what fake moms are for."
"You're a lot more than just my fake mom," Morgan said. "You're one of my very, very best friends."
Kei grinned, "I could say the same about you."
If Morgan was being completely honest, this was way better than her DJ Parasite fanfiction.
Morgan came home about an hour later, close to lunchtime, wondering whether or not the Drake siblings would still be squabbling when she got back.
The answer was, surprisingly, no, but not for the reason Morgan had expected. Sadie and Simon were still in her dining room, laboring over legal pads where they were apparently problem-solving with Booker. Seth was nowhere in sight.
"I came home to a very heated discussion and decided to try to help, but Seth said that I couldn't help with their problem, so they went downstairs to work," Booker explained before going back to helping Simon figure out a good place to hide until his criminal allegations had been forgotten. Booker didn't seem to care about the fact that Simon had committed crimes, he'd long since come to expect that that was the crowd he hung out with now.
"Thanks, doc. I'm gonna go talk to them, but I can make lunch afterward."
"Oh, no worries, I already started lunch." Booker and Seth were both aware that Morgan was only really good at making mac and cheese, which was a fair assessment of her talents.
"I'll do the dishes, then."
Booker gave her a thumbs up before she headed downstairs.
"Hey, babe, whatcha working on?"
Seth held up a robot arm.
"Oh, yeah, knock-off Baymax."
"Not a knock-off, and not a knock-off of Baymax. Tomato Baysil is a soup delivery robot based off of the Mini-Max design, which is on loan to me from Hiro and is not a copyright infringement as long as it never leaves our house."
"Airtight argument, babe."
"If Fred has a robot I should get a robot," Seth mumbled.
"Obviously."
"And Hiro said I couldn't use his design for anything illegal so what was I supposed to do? It's like my dad used to say, 'When in doubt, make soup.'"
"Wow, Connor Drake is a real fount of wisdom."
"Yeah, well, there's a reason my siblings and I are the way that we are, and it wasn't 'cause of his superb parenting skills. But he was right about the soup."
"I can't believe that out of the three of us, there isn't a single really good dad. At least mine and yours sometimes try, Booker's dad doesn't even know about Maya."
"Well, from what he's told us, that's for the best."
Seth was quiet for a moment and then, "You said the three of us. Does that mean you've thought about it some more?"
"A little. And then, when I came home and he was helping Sadie and Simon with their problems, I thought about it a lot more. He really is something exceptional, isn't he?"
"He is."
"Just like us," Morgan said, trailing her fingers down Seth's toned arm. Seth smiled up at her with a fangy smile.
"Just like us."
"To be honest, Seth, inviting Booker into our relationship kind of freaks me out, because I haven't been in a relationship with a man since Tadashi, but… I know that I can have the love I had for Tadashi still be a part of me even as I go on to love other people."
"We don't have to do anything you don't want to do, love. I understand if it feels too soon."
"It does, but I think it always will. Everything felt too soon when it happened, like I had to put my life on pause after he died. Hell, I still haven't started drinking tea again-"
"That's why you don't drink tea?!"
"Yeah…"
"I should've been more sensitive about that, Morgan."
"I should have communicated my boundaries better. I'm still figuring them out, myself."
"Well, it's not too late, now… Any boundaries, anything you think I need to know, I'm here and I'll listen."
"Alright, but you'll do the same, right? Especially after everything that happened with Sycorax, I need to know your wants and needs."
"Deal." Seth rested their head against Morgan's stomach, their wings folded out of the way.
"We're pretty good at this relationship thing," they said, smiling dreamily up at Morgan.
"And getting better every day," Morgan said, leaning down to kiss Seth.
"I think…" Morgan said with a little hum, "I think if you want to, and if he wants to, we could maybe buy a king-sized bed."
"Are you sure? Do you really want to?"
"Yeah. I think I do." Which meant they both had to have another important conversation. But maybe not while Seth's siblings were there…
If it wasn't clear from the last chapter, Trina has completely been talked out of trying to take over the city, because I figured I didn't want to or need to deal with another major threat before the end of the fic. They all have enough to deal with, anyway.
