Arizona sighed and grabbed a cold pack to lay across her forehead as she laid her head back on the chair in the attending lounge while waiting on the ibuprofen she had taken to kick in. She had been having headaches that were getting progressively worse over the last few weeks. So much so that she has made an appointment for an eye exam. She couldn't think of any other reason for her to be having them. She actually had been fairly stress free the past couple of months. Well, as stress free as her job would allow.
Callie and her have been getting along really well. They have been having weekly dinners with Sofia and Chloe and even went to the park together a couple of times. They had discussed putting the past in the past. That didn't mean that Arizona had forgotten how Callie had hurt her, she just decided that she wouldn't think about that right now. They were becoming more than co-parents to Sofia, they were becoming friends. Arizona had the same conversation with both Callie and Meredith, at separate times of course. Meredith was relentless "I don't understand why you won't take the opportunity to be with the love of your life when you have the opportunity." Arizona couldn't explain it, she was just happy with things as they are right now. Callie was willing to take things slow and build their relationship before they jumped into anything. Arizona didn't want to think about the past, or the future for that matter. She just wanted things to be as they are, for now anyway, and as long as Callie and Arizona were okay with that, then that was all that mattered.
Arizona's beeper went off and she sighed. Her headache had lessened but was still there and now she had a surgery to prepare for. She made her way to the OR and scrubbed in, she briefly discussed the surgery with her patient and how when this was over both Mom and baby would be fine. Arizona had performed this procedure over a dozen of times and was confident that this outcome would be positive. More than halfway through the procedure, Arizona looked up and told to her intern Schmidt to page Dr Karev. Arizona went back to working on the patient, after a moment Arizona looked to Schmidt again and said "Page Dr Shepherd." Schmidt replied "But Dr. Robbins, there wasn't anything on any of the scans to indicate anything neurological." Arizona snapped "Do what I said." She never raised her voice so the intern knew she meant business. As he was scrambling out of the OR, Alex was walking in "Did you need me?" Arizona nodded and Alex went to scrub in. When he entered the OR, Arizona explained to Alex what she had done so far and what needed to be completed, which wasn't much left, mainly checking the amniotic fluid and close up the patient but without question Alex took the probes as Arizona handed them off and she made her way to the scrub room. Amelia walked in while she was finishing up and immediately knew that something was wrong. Arizona said "I need you for a consult." She grabbed Amelia by the wrist and led them away to a more private location. When they were finally alone Arizona said "I seem to have lost the vision in my left eye."
Callie and Meredith were both walking up to the OR board when they noticed everyone's favorite scrub nurse Bohkee scolding Schmidt the intern. Meredith looked at Callie amused. They both knew that if Bohkee got involved that it was bad. They heard her say "You don't question your attending again, especially Dr Robbins." Before Bohkee stormed off. Meredith stepped up to Schmidt and asked "What was she talking about?" Schmidt sighed when he saw both of them. "I didn't mean to question Dr Robbins, but she was acting weird. Halfway through her procedure she stopped talking, and Dr Robbins always explains the entire procedure as she performs it, then she had me page Dr. Karev to finish the procedure and then she had me page Dr Shepherd and there wasn't any neuro related complications." Callie interrupted "Stop talking!" She pulled Meredith aside leaving Schmidt looking confused. "We need to find Arizona and Amelia, something is wrong, she would never have Karev finish a procedure without a good reason."
They started to make their way to the attendings lounge when Dr Bailey called out " Grey. Torres. You need to come with me." They followed the chief who could move surprisingly fast for someone with such short legs. They followed her to the MRI room only to see Amelia sitting in the chair staring at the monitors. She barely looked up at them when they entered the room as the scans were coming up. They all looked on horror at what they showed. Callie immediately left the scan room. They watched her leave and Meredith went to follow her. Bailey helped move Arizona from the MRI to an awaiting wheelchair. Amelia had previously taped up Arizona's eyes. She wouldn't let go of Bailey's hand. Arizona was wheeled into a room and Amelia and Bailey helped her up on the bed. There was silence in the room and finally Amelia said "Arizona, you have 2 aneurysms. One is significantly bigger than the other and it appears to be pressing on your optic nerve. You have suffered severe trauma in the past and I am sure past concussions have contributed to this and I am going to do everything in my power to fix this."
There was silence while Arizona processed this information and she finally asked "You can fix it though right?" She then started laughing while Bailey and Amelia looked on, she finally let up and said "So now we have 2 blind fetal surgeons." Her laughter broke way into a sob and Amelia said "Arizona, I am going to take care of you." She nodded to Bailey as she left to get an OR ready. Arizona was silently crying and Bailey spoke "I thought you were a pixie stick…..when I met you I thought you were an empty vessel full of sugar who skated around the hospital. I didn't know then that it would have been one of the great privileges of my life to know you and to work with you and I am here to tell you that YOU will get through this and we will all be here by your side."
Callie had needed a moment to process what she just saw on the screens. Meredith came up on her and Callie said "I can't lose her Meredith." Meredith replied "I know, we won't. Amelia is going to fix this. Come on let's go back." They walk back into the room and over hear Bailey's conversation. Callie asks "Arizona, do you want me to call your parents?"
Arizona sighed "They are in Germany visiting friends. Callie…. I need…" she paused and when it didn't look like she was able to finish, Callie said "What do you need Arizona?"
Arizona choked back a sob "I know it's not your responsibility, but Chloe needs Sofia. Can you keep them together for me? Sofia is all she has."
Callie started crying "Of course I will, they are sisters and you know, this is just temporary. Amelia is going to fix you right up."
Amelia walked back into the room "Arizona, I was reviewing your past medical history and there are discrepancies. Bailey is there any way we can find the missing records?"
Bailey asked "That doesn't make sense, what are you missing?"
"Well, there was a car accident and there was a head injury and no scans and then again after the plane crash, I know everyone on the plane suffered a concussion and no scans." Arizona interrupted " I am pretty sure that they were more concerned with my leg and that's why there isn't a head scan after the plane crash." Amelia said "Well what about the car accident? You had a head wound that required stitches."
Arizona shook her head "Alex stitched me up, there were no scans." Amelia threw her hands in the air "What is with you people? Head injuries require scans." Amelia stormed out of the room and Meredith followed. " I don't understand it Meredith, how could she not have been treated properly for her injuries?"
Meredith sighed "I cant tell you much about the plane crash, but you are right. We all did have concussions, and as far as the car crash, we all were concerned about Callie. Arizona seemed fine she just kept mumbling something about a truck coming out of no where." Amelia became angry "She had an obvious head injury and was speaking incoherently and you all ignored her?! Meredith had the good sense to look guilty because she of all people knew about the importance of obtaining scans for a head injury. "It was a different time." Meredith tried to explain. Amelia said " You don't have to explain anything to me, I know how hard it is around here if you aren't part of the club." she turned to walk back into the room. "Arizona, I want you to know that you are my TOP priority. Okay?" "Thank you Amelia" Arizona replied as she was being wheeled out to get prepped foam the OR.
