AN: With the anniversary of Cloris Leachman's death approaching, I was inspired to write a fanfic about Maw Maw's death after rewatching this show in December. So, here is a little late tribute to Cloris Leachman.
Delilah is also a redeemed Character in this one and she and Virginia patched things up.
This chapter is told from Virginia's first person POV, which is why some of these words are going to be said wrong on purpose as a reminder of some of the Chances' missayings and misunderstandings of words. Here are the malapropisms: genital reveal = gender reveal, aminocervix = amniocentesis, vaginacologist = gynecologist/obstetrician, posthumourously = posthumously, Robert Spielberg = Robert Zemeckis, biodegradable = biological, disintegrating = deteriorating, Old Timer's = Alzheimer's, booby-pinned = bobby-pinned, euthanasia = anesthesia, procrasturbating = procrastinating, urinologist = urologist,
I'm starting out the story with a chapter of an overview throughout the years since the series finale (told from Virginia's first person POV, which is why some of these words are going to be said wrong on purpose as a reminder of some of the Chances' missayings and misunderstandings of words). I hope you all enjoy.
These years went by way too fast for me.
Thanks to my narcissistic father who I was hesitant, I finally got the wedding of my dreams and then finally made up with him and repaired our relationship (despite the fact that the dream wedding was used with the money he promised to give for Hope's college fund). I even let Arnold move in with me, Burt, and Maw Maw and take Jimmy's old room at Jimmy's request after we Chances agreed to give him another chance.
One month later, we all celebrated Maw Maw's (and Jimmy's) birthday the same way we always did. The size of the cake stayed the same, but the number of candles grew. That was the tradition we did every year.
On May 17th, 2014, Jimmy turned 26 and Maw Maw turned 88. Arnold joining in this celebration wasn't the only thing different about this party because this year, Jimmy and Sabrina oddly decided to invite a lot of people - Barney, Frank, Shelley, Dancing Dan, Javier, Marcus, Rosa, Tyler, Andrew, Donna, Mike and his wife and brother/husbands, Bruce, Burt's parents, and even Sabrina's rich parents (who didn't show up). In fact, there was a reason why because right after I lit the candles and told my grandmother and son to make their wishes, Jimmy happily announced, "Sabrina's pregnant!" We were all so happy for them and congratulated them and Hope with hugs and tears of joy.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck over the summer when at the 20-week appointment when Jimmy and Sabrina were going to find out the sex of the baby (instead of those weird genital reveals) and receive the aminocervix test, their vaginacologist told them there was no heartbeat. It was a little girl, and she was named Grace June Chance posthumorously. At her funeral, Burt strummed "Danny's Song" on the guitar while I sang...just like we did for Hope when she first came home. It was very difficult for our granddaughter to see her parents this sad and broken. She was also sad and disappointed that she was never going to see her baby sister.
When January came around, Jimmy and Sabrina were finally ready to start trying for a baby again. In response, Maw Maw groaned at the thought of more "sex poison" hanging around the house. Burt and I, however, were excited once again.
On May 17th, 2015, Jimmy turned 27 and Maw Maw turned 89 and celebrated their birthdays after we all returned from Hope's pre-K graduation (it was hard to believe she would be starting Kindergarten in a few months). To make things even more exciting that year, Jimmy and Sabrina announced that she was pregnant again. Although they didn't invite a bunch of people to share the news with this time, they did let five-year-old Hope be the one to make the announcement by unzipping her jacket and revealing a shirt that had the words BIG SISTER written across it.
When I went baby shopping with Sabrina, there were a lot of things I learned about caring for a newborn and how much has changed. I had no idea that crib bumpers weren't safe.
Also, that year in October, Burt went on a long rant about how it was 2015 and still no flying car like Robert Spielberg promised. Sabrina also went on a long lecture about how you can't predict the future.
2015 was also the year Hope became fully aware that her biodegradable mother was a serial killer...and that her name used to be Princess Beyoncé.
However, it was hard for all of us to be happy and excited considering what happened with Sabrina's last pregnancy. Fortunately, Joy Louise Chance was born healthy without any complications in January 2016. I was even in the delivery room with Sabrina when I watched my third granddaughter be born.
Although Jimmy had taken care of Hope as a baby, he and Sabrina still needed help from Burt and I with taking care of their newborn since Hope was only six-months-old when Jimmy got custody of her and he was inexperienced with newborns. Sabrina also threw up on Joy when she tried to change a diaper for the first time...just like Jimmy did when he first tried to change Hope's diaper.
There was also the happiness of gay marriage being legalized. Because of that, Dad married his lover, who had the same name as the lover he made up when he threw Burt and me a surprise wedding, and then moved out of the house but still closer to Burt and me.
On May 17th, 2016, Jimmy turned 28 and Maw Maw turned 90 and her health was disintegrating. On that birthday, we all told six-year-old Hope, who was almost finished with Kindergarten, the funny story of Maw Maw's 80th and Jimmy's 18th (it was also the year when Maw Maw was in the early stages of Old Timer's disease). Also, with the celebration of the possibility of the first female president (despite our huge disappointment later in November), Sabrina, Jimmy, Burt, Dad, Maw Maw, and I watched the taping of Hope's performance as Hillary in Sabrina and Shelley's awful play with Hope and Joy.
On May 17th, 2017, Jimmy turned 29 and Maw Maw turned 91. This birthday was also on the day of Hope's spring dance recital, so she still had some make-up on her face and her hair was still in a tight booby-pinned bun. This time, my bitch/skank/whore cousin Delilah had returned to celebrate and also apologize to me...and she surprisingly really meant it. She also finally met her real Prince Charming. The meanest thing she did that day was tease me about being a grandma of two and not even 50 yet.
Later on in September, Jimmy and Sabrina announced that they were having another baby despite saying that having just Hope and Joy was perfect. This one was completely unexpected and a total at-the-moment whoopsie like Hope was. When Sabrina was ten weeks away from her due date, Jimmy got a vasectomy (something he kept procrasturbating on getting done) with Burt sitting right by his side. While under the euthanasia, Burt pulled Jimmy's finger at his request and farted in the urinologist's face. However, Burt didn't shave Jimmy's pubes as Jimmy did to him when he got his, which was frickin' weird.
On May 17th, 2018, Jimmy turned 30 and Maw Maw turned 92...and was unfortunately entering the late stages of Old Timer's. She required around-the-clock assistance with daily personal care and she experienced changes in many of her physical abilities. The good news was that on this very day, Sabrina announced that her water broke right after Jimmy and Maw Maw blew out the many candles on the cake. In less than an hour, Wilfred "Willie" Burt Chance was born on the living room couch because the baby was coming way too fast; faster than we expected.
This was how Hope actually fully learned about the miracle of birth - by seeing the graphic parts of it.
It reminded me too much of the moment when Maw Maw thought when she was in labor when Sabrina first came to visit our home and looked at our disastrous family photos. Jimmy and Sabrina said it reminded them of Hope's rebirthing ceremony.
Just like I was the one who suggested Hope's name, I was the one who helped Jimmy and Sabrina choose their son's name. Hope's middle name was after me, which was why Jimmy and Sabrina wanted their son's middle name to be after Burt. I suggested naming him after my Paw Paw, and Maw Maw absolutely loved that suggestion.
On May 17th, 2019, Willie turned one, Jimmy turned 31, and Maw Maw turned 93. This was the first birthday Maw Maw celebrated in her bed. Thankfully because I was the Knock Knock Knock crew chief, Burt and I were able to afford an at-home nurse to take care of a bedridden 24/7 Maw Maw while we were at work.
We were all able to celebrate Hope's tenth birthday together before lockdown, but things got hard after that due to the pandemic. One of the reasons being Sabrina having to teach Burt and me how to video chat. Another sad thing was that Willie was going to have his first play date, but it had to be cancelled when lockdown happened.
On May 17th, 2020, Willie turned two, Jimmy turned 32, and Maw Maw turned 94...and also had trouble communicating and was hardly ever had any lucid moments anymore. We celebrated these birthday through video chat. Things seemed harder for Jimmy and Sabrina because they were essential employees who had three kids at home. It was hard to find childcare, so they payed Shelley to watch Hope, Joy, and Willie and make sure Hope got her virtual classes and school work done. Shelley was also struggling financially since less children, old people, and dogs were coming to her daycare since the lockdown (and Jimmy and Sabrina wanted to help her)
Unfortunately, things got harder very fast. Due to the pandemic, Burt's lawn care service was almost run out of business and was this close to going back to working for Green Thumb since he was struggling as a small business owner. I was still employed, but I was also an essential employee as were Jimmy and Sabrina. To make things worse, Jimmy and Sabrina tested positive for COVID at the same time Maw Maw had pneumonia and almost died.
2020 was a hard year for all of us.
Then, on January 27th, 2021, the second Chance family tragedy had struck since Jimmy and Sabrina lost their baby.
AN: I hope you all enjoyed. The next chapter will be up soon. Please review :)
