The cold, sterile feeling of the room in that moment was worse than anything Anakin had felt up to that point.
The only thing that he could compare it to was the dunes of Tatooine when he watched his mother die but he was doing his best to push those thoughts away. He had seen that moment in his visions before.
In his premonitions it always ended the same, with him holding Padmes lifeless body in his arms but now it would be different. He had more power than ever before and he would change the result of his visions.
In that moment he was as angry as he was worried. He had rushed back from the Inquisitors fortress as soon as the droid arrived with the message that Padme had gone into labor and was expected to deliver their child knowing that, after what happened in Mustafar, she would be in critical condition but even that did little to calm him since he still arrived late.
By the time he finally arrived, his wife was already under the care and watch of the medical droids, though breathing heavily and in pain, much to Anakins concern. He watched through the crystal in the room for a couple seconds, debating whether to enter unannounced or wait until he was informed of the situation.
Before he could decide however, one of the medical droids inside noticed him and left the room to talk to him.
"Lord Vader. We managed to stabilize her vitals, but we need to operate if we are to save the babies." It informed him.
Suddenly, Padmes condition wasnt the only thing that concerned Anakin, though this one was much more positive in nature.
"Babies?" He asked, still trying to process the news.
"Shes carrying twins." The droid explained.
Then, before it could say anything else, the young man pushed past him and entered the room. The other droids inside barely gave him a moments notice as they continued preparing what they needed for the operation.
As soon as he was next to her, Anakin grabbed her hand and held her tightly, her skin feeling uncomfortably cold to the touch.
"Padme…"
Suddenly, he wasnt Darth Vader, apprentice to Darth Sidious and the Empires fist; he wasnt the Chosen One, the most powerful Force wielder and the one meant to bring balance to the Force. He was simply Anakin Skywalker, a frightened boy from Tatooine.
"Anakin…" Padme suddenly muttered, her face twisting into a grimace of pain and her grip tightening around his hand.
Anakin watched in fear and concern as the droids and his wife got to business, with his concern only slightly subsiding when the crying of a baby was heard, filling the room with energy.
The droid passed the baby over to Anakin and, immediately, his worries evaporated and he breathe easier, a small smile forming in his face as he swayed him in his arms before presenting him to Padme.
"Its a boy." He said, subconsciously reaching out with the Force to check on his wifes condition better than any doctor could.
"Luke…" She named him before the pain forced her to focus on other things.
Anakin looked at his son and, for an instant, her reminisced about the man that had first started him down his path, the first Jedi he ever met and one of the few people that had earned his utmost respect.
"Jinn." He completed, right before he had to hand off Luke to another droid.
Padme smiled as she nodded in agreement before speaking faintly, "Luke-Jinn. A good name."
Immediately, the medical droid passed him the other baby and small tears of happiness started forming in his eyes, but he did his best to control himself.
"Its a girl." He said, showing her to Padme.
"Leia." She named her, a faint smile forming on her face.
Anakin was happy, the happiest he had ever felt in a long, long time. However, his joy soon turned to dread, as he sensed Padme fading.
"No, no, no, no…!" He exclaimed, turning his attention toward his wife.
He grabbed her hand and her face, his mind already dreading the worst; a single tear starting to run down his cheek.
Then, he reached out into the Force, beyond himself and into her, he had been too late to save his mother, but he wouldnt be late to save Padme. He sensed her life fading, slipping away from him and, out of desperation, he tried to influence her presence in the Force, to try and kindle it.
For a couple moments he tried, bringing himself to the limit of his abilities and, despite his efforts, it didnt work. He sensed Padme drift from the world and started to break down, any joy he had sucked from the moment.
And then he felt her coming back around. Color returned to her skin, her breathing started returning to a regular rhythm, and, for a moment, she opened her eyes and recognized him before falling unconscious, but thankfully, alive.
He then pressed his forehead against hers and breathed a sigh of relief.
"I'll keep you safe. And then… we'll rule the Empire, together."
Padme nodded against his forehead, "I love you."
Anakin replied, "I love you too."
