I hope you all enjoy this chapter! This is in correlation with my other two stories, Awake and Alive and No One Else, so please go read and review those as well for everything to make sense. Some bits intertwine with each other but they're all told at different viewpoints.
It had been an hour since Derek and Anabelle left the four worn out betas in the subway car. None of them could hear their voices or catch their scent so they must have left to do God only knows what. Isaac thought they went to go 'do the nasty' in his words, making Delilah roll her eyes. But since the effects of the full moon were starting to die down they decided it was time to get out of their chains. Delilah broke out of hers first and then helped Isaac remove his. The other two pack members were still out like lights.
"Should we wake them up?" Delilah asked as she tore off Isaac's last cuff.
"Just leave them be," he told her, "Besides, I just wanna be with you with no interruptions this time."
"You act like you don't like them," Delilah rolled her eyes.
"I do like them," Isaac said, "But I like you more."
"Aren't you sweet." The young couple pecked each other's lips. "To Jane's?"
"To Jane's."
After taking the rest of the water Anabelle had given Delilah and washed the blood off her skin, she and Isaac left the station and walked throughout the town until they reached their favorite diner. Thank god this place was open 24/7. Only a few other customers were sitting either at the counter or booths. The booth the young couple usually sat at was open so they sat across from each other.
"Hi, kids," Jane greeted right away, "What you two doing up so late?"
"Let's just say it's been a pretty long night," Isaac said. Delilah nodded in agreement.
"Oh, man, I've had those nights," Jane laughed to herself, "Aw, the sixties were the best. Those were the good ol' days. Anyway, you kids want your usual?"
"Yes, please," Delilah smiled.
"Sure thing. I'll have that right out for you."
Delilah waited until the older woman left before asking, "What do you think she meant by having those nights?"
"You know what, I don't think I really wanna know," Isaac grimaced. Jane came back shortly with their chocolate milkshakes and fries. They thanked her and by the time she walked away Delilah was already halfway through her drink. She sighed dreamily, making Isaac raise an eyebrow. "Do I need to leave you alone with that for a bit?"
"Judge all you want," Delilah quipped, "but I'm starting to love this more than I love you."
"How comforting to know that I'm losing my girlfriend to chocolate," Isaac said sarcastically.
"Haven't you heard the expression, 'chocolate is a girl's best friend'?"
"I thought it was diamonds?"
"Would you rather give me diamonds?"
"Not really sure that fits my budget."
Shaking her head, Delilah laughed which made Isaac smile. It was good to see her more relaxed now. Not even just from the events that occurred earlier with the full moon. Just in life in general. Granted Delilah was still learning how to manage her PTSD and her newfound powers, but now with Lawrence dead and her out of the house, her aura was so much lighter. She was sleeping a lot better now that she would be in Isaac's arms. There were still times where Delilah was jumpy and she couldn't control the way her hands would tremble when doing the simplest of tasks. But every day she was improving. That was already something to be proud of.
Besides when she scratched herself repeatedly at the subway station, Delilah also stopped cutting. Isaac still sometimes catches her staring at her razor when her PTSD triggers, wanting to grab it and feel some aching release. But now that Isaac was with her almost every second of every day (how Delilah wasn't tired of him by now, he would never know), he would sit her down and do deep breathing exercises that Ms. Morrell recommended with her. While they were really meant to help Delilah, they also worked on Isaac as well.
Sometimes he would get night terrors. They weren't super common, but when he did get them, they could become pretty bad. It was mostly just him tossing and turning and even occasionally yelling out in his sleep as the images of being locked in a freezer and having to scratch his way out haunted him. He would be broken out in a cold sweat when he woke up and breathing so heavily you would have thought he just ran a marathon.
But Delilah was always there, ready to hold him close to her chest and whispered sweet nothings as he tried to catch his breath. Isaac would rest his head above her heart so he could match his own beats with it. That was all he needed to be reminded that life with his father no longer existed. Delilah was his new familiar, his new hope. Nothing else mattered as long as she was there.
She giggled. "What are you smiling about over there?"
"Nothing," Isaac answered, still smiling, "I'm just glad that I'm here with you."
"Me too," Delilah smiled back.
"Us too," Erica said as she plopped down next to her best friend as Boyd took the spot next to Isaac, "It's nice to just kick back after being chained up for hours. By the way, thanks for leaving us at the station, assholes."
Stuttering, Delilah asked, "How'd you even know where we would be?"
"We heard you before you guys left," Boyd answered.
"Plus we just followed your scent over here," Erica added, stealing a fry from Isaac's plate. He rolled his eyes. "Speaking of, your girlfriend smells like cinnamon rolls, did you know that?"
"Yes, actually I did," Isaac deadpanned, "And I know that she said that the four of us should hang out more, but I don't think she meant right now." He winced when Delilah kicked his shin underneath the table.
"Stop it," she scolded her boyfriend, "You both are always welcome to join us."
"Thank you, Delilah," Erica smiled sweetly, "How nice of you."
Just when Boyd took one of Isaac's fries, making the blond boy pout even more, Delilah's phone vibrated. She was surprised to see whose name was on the caller ID. It was Deaton. Why was he calling her this late at night? Delilah excused herself from the booth and walked outside.
"Deaton?" she answered the phone.
"Hello, Delilah," the veterinarian greeted, "I know it's pretty late, but I just wanted to check on you after your first full moon. How did it go?"
"Oh, well, you know," Delilah shrugged even though no one else could see it, "it was pretty rough, as I expected. But I survived. That's all that matters."
"That's true," Deaton chuckled, "Did you use the mantra?"
"I did. And it actually worked. It was kinda amazing. Having Isaac with me helped quite a lot too."
"Good. I know full moons can be tough, but like I said before, the more you go through it, the easier it will become. Soon enough you'll be a natural."
Delilah smiled. "I hope so. I can't thank you enough, Deaton. Not only for helping me with tonight, but for being my mentor throughout all of this. I don't know what I would have done without you."
"Of course, Delilah. I'm happy to help."
Then he got silent, concerning the hybrid. Delilah could tell he was struggling to get his next sentence out. "Is everything okay, Deaton?"
"Oh, yes, everything's fine," Deaton assured her, "I actually… I have a question for you. I know I should probably ask in person but I'm not sure when I'll see you next."
Huh. "Okay…"
"So I went to the sheriff's station to ask what your status was," Deaton continued, "You know, as in whether you were going to be placed in the foster system or stay with Anabelle. They told me she never signed any paperwork declaring her as your legal guardian. I haven't spoke with her so I don't know what her plan is with that. But I was wondering… you know, only if you want… if you wanted me to sign the paperwork instead."
The phone slipped out of Delilah's hand and onto the ground as the words processed through her head. Her lips were slightly parted and her eyes grew wide. She couldn't believe it… Deaton wanted to become her legal guardian?
If she didn't hear Deaton's voice calling her name, she would have remained in that frozen state. Delilah snapped out of it and hurriedly picked up her phone.
"Hi, sorry! Sorry about that," she rambled, "I just needed a moment. But… are you asking me if I want to be adopted?"
"Again, it is entirely up to you," her mentor told her, "You have every right to say no. I won't hold it against you and I will still help you with your abilities. I just know how hard it is for kids your age to become adopted and I don't want you to have to go into the system or be away from Isaac and your friends. If you need time to think about it-"
"I don't need to," Delilah interrupted, "My answer is yes."
Now it was Deaton's turn to be shocked. "Really? Are you sure?"
"Yes. If you're really sure that you want me to stay with you."
"I do. It would make it easier for you to get help and it would provide you some stability. You might have to be patient with me since I've never had to raise children before but I would be happy to welcome you into my home."
Again, he couldn't see Delilah, but she was nodding her head eagerly. "Then yes. Yes, I'm in."
"Great." She could practically hear Deaton smiling from the other side of the phone."We should probably go down to the sheriff's station sometime within the next few days to get the paperwork taken care of and make everything official. And I'll give you as much time as you need to gather everything you want to bring with you."
"That sounds great to me," Delilah said, "I don't know what to say… thank you. Thank you so much, Deaton."
"You're welcome, Delilah. I'll let you go get some rest now. But you take care, okay?"
"Sure thing. Have a good night."
Grinning from ear to ear, Delilah hung up. She could hardly contain the giddy laughter bubbling up inside her. This couldn't be real… but it was. Within just a few weeks, she had gone from being an abused girl to a werewolf/caladrius that someone actually wanted to raise. And Delilah couldn't have been any more relieved that it was a man that she actually respected and looked up to. It didn't worry her that he had never taken care of a child before, let alone a teenaged girl. But if he was willing to take on the task, who was she to refuse such an offer?
What was Isaac going to say when she tells him? Was he going to be excited for Delilah? Or was he going to be upset? Delilah didn't know why he would be upset, but she couldn't help but overthink it. As usual. Maybe she should wait to tell him. But when Isaac walked out of the diner and over to her, it seemed to be that Delilah wasn't going to get the opportunity to decide.
"Is everything okay out here?" Isaac asked. He smirked when he saw the smile on his girlfriend's face. "You sure look happy."
"That was Deaton," Delilah told him, "He asked if he could adopt me…"
She grew nervous when Isaac's eyes widened. But those nerves went away really quickly when he smiled himself. "Are you serious? Baby, that's amazing!" He pulled her into a huge bear hug. Delilah breathed in Isaac's scent which only made her smile even bigger. "No one deserves this more than you do, Delilah. I love you so much."
"I love you even more, Isaac."
Despite the good news, the night did not end on a happy note.
Isaac had gotten a call from Derek while the four of them were still at the diner, talking and laughing with each other like they were normal teenagers. That call quickly reminded them they were anything but.
They had learned that Matt Daehler was the one controlling the kanima. A large shootout and fight took place at the sheriff's station. Matt ended up escaping, but he was drowned by Gerard Argent, Allison's grandfather. That ended up making him the new controller. But that wasn't the worst part.
Anabelle's apartment caught on fire. Nobody was injured, thank god. From what Derek and Anabelle found, it was clearly not an accident. Now that Gerard had full power over the kanima, that had to mean that he was going to use it to take down the entire pack and he wasn't going to let anything get in his way in killing them. So they've been in hiding at the old and burnt Hale and Fierro house for about a week since that night. Delilah knew it was mostly to protect Anabelle since she was still technically an omega and those are the ones hunters tend to go for first. Plus she was extremely important to Derek and he had feelings for her from what Isaac said. Delilah couldn't blame Derek. She would have done the same thing if it meant keeping Isaac safe and she knew he would too.
This whole thing was so scary… how were any of them meant to survive this? Granted Delilah knew what she was getting herself into when she took the bite. But never could she have predicted this. Neither could have any of the other betas for that matter. She could see that everyone was getting frustrated and afraid. Including Derek, which was odd within itself.
He demanded that everyone stayed put in the house but he did make an exception for Delilah only to go to the animal clinic to see Deaton. She was there quite a lot Isaac noticed. Not that he necessarily minded. It's not like he was her keeper. But he was still concerned for her safety when she went out. Plus he was pretty sure when Delilah was there so was Scott. Jealousy crept through Isaac as he thought of the two spending more time together and he couldn't help it. He trusted Delilah and he was even starting to trust Scott.
Then why couldn't he get the two of them out of his head?
Delilah watched as Deaton and Scott were getting ready to treat the dog laying on the operating table. Poor thing was whimpering in pain, breaking the hybrid's heart. The worst part was knowing this dog was most likely not going to make it. She knew that when she tried to heal him but he wouldn't take. A part of her felt like she had failed him, even though Deaton kept reassuring her that there was nothing she could have done. It wasn't going to stop Delilah from petting him and making sure he was receiving as much comfort as possible.
"I don't envy either one of you two," Delilah said to the two males, "How do you not have a nervous breakdown every time you know one of your patients is dying?"
"Over time you learn how to detach yourself from it emotionally," Deaton told her, "What's most important is making sure they are comfortable within their final moments. Now matter how upsetting it may be."
"Sounds exhausting in many ways," Delilah sighed.
"It was hard for me to do that in the beginning," Scott admitted, scratching the back of the dog's ear, "Sometimes I still get a little teary-eyed. But Deaton's right. You just want to make everything for them as peaceful as possible."
"You'll learn to do the same the more your caladrius abilities develop more," Deaton told Delilah, "You won't always have successes as a healer. However you can't let that defeat you. Being a caladrius means taking care of the ill no matter what their fate is."
"Like a caregiver," Delilah said. She looked down at the dog who looked up at her and touched their foreheads together.
Deaton smiled. "Exactly." He began to draw medicine into the needle he was about to use on the dog when the bell in front of the front door rang. He turned to Scott. "Would you mind seeing who that is?"
Before Scott could go to the front, all of the dogs in the back started barking and whining uncontrollably. The three grew concerned at a possible threat entering the building. After looking at each other, Scott and Delilah walked up to the front of the clinic with Deaton following behind them. Much to their relief and surprise, it was Isaac. He was standing at the door with his hands shoved in his pockets, looking nervous as hell.
"It's okay, Isaac," Deaton assured him, opening the door to the office, "We're open."
Slowly Isaac walked in further as Deaton and Scott went back to the office. He walked up to his girlfriend who stayed put to greet him.
"Hey," he said softly.
"Hi," Delilah grinned at him, stretching on her toes to kiss him, "What are you doing here? I thought Derek was pretty strict on everyone staying in the house."
"I wanted to come see you," Isaac said, somewhat telling the truth, "and you know if you ask Anabelle she doesn't say no."
"True," Delilah giggled. She kissed him once more before wrapping her arms around his waist. "I'm still happy to see you."
"Me too," Isaac whispered, kissing the top of her head.
Fuck, this was going to be a lot harder for him to decide.
Taking his hand in hers, Delilah led him into the office where Deaton and Scott continued to work on the dog. They stood at the end of the table and watched Deaton stick the needle in the dog and injected the medicine into his.
Isaac's face turned into disgust. "Why does it smell like that?" Deaton and Scott looked at each other and chuckled. "What?"
"Scott said almost the same thing to me a few months ago," Deaton told him, "One day he could somehow tell the difference between which animals were getting better and which… were not."
"He's not getting better, is he?" Isaac asked, "Like cancer."
"Osteosarcoma. It has a very distinct scent, doesn't it?"
An idea struck Delilah's mind. She looked at her new guardian and he nodded his head as he knew what she was thinking.
"Come here," Deaton instructed. Delilah took Isaac's hand and pulled him to the veterinarian's side of the table. "I know you're well aware of what your new abilities can do for you. Improved strength, speed, and healing. You ever wonder what it could do for others?"
Smiling, Delilah held out her hand to her boyfriend. "Give me your hand." Isaac did so hesitantly. She placed it on the dog. "Go on, baby. It's okay."
Just as she removed her own hand, black veins started running up from Isaac's hand. The other three smiled knowingly at each other as they watched Isaac's face go from scared to amazed. Delilah was in awe at how humble he became from this moment, just like how he used to be before he was bitten.
He removed his hand off the dog and pulled up his sleeve and watched the veins travel up his arm and then disappear.
"What did I do?" he asked breathily.
"You took some of his pain away," Scott smiled.
"Only a little bit," Deaton said, "You may not be able to fully heal them like Delilah can, but sometimes a little can make quite a difference."
Isaac brought his hand up to his mouth as he started tearing up, in shock that he was actually able to do something good with his powers. It warmed Delilah's heart to know that her love still had that sensitive side to him.
"It's okay," Scott said, "First time he showed me, I cried too."
Chuckling in happiness, Isaac looked down at Delilah who was beaming just as brightly as he was. She wiped his tears away with her thumb and he leaned his forehead against hers, not caring that the other two were watching them.
Afterwards, Deaton went to work on some paperwork at the front desk while Delilah went in the back to check on Daisy. It was her last day at the animal clinic before she was to be picked up to go into the K-9 unit. Delilah sat on the floor as the German Shepherd snuggled in her lap.
"I'm really going to miss you, girl," Delilah said as she pet Daisy's back, "I wish I could take you home with me. But I know you're going to do so well in K-9 training. You'll be at the top of your class." She picked Daisy up so she was looking her in the eyes. "Just don't forget me, okay?"
Of course the dog couldn't respond. But she did lick Delilah's face, making the girl giggle. Maybe she did understand her. Delilah liked to think so.
She put Daisy back in her kennel and closed the door. She stood up and was about to go back into the office where Isaac and Scott were. But she heard them talking before she walked in. So she hid behind the wall and listened into their conversation.
"They're leaving tonight," she heard Isaac say, "during the game."
Leaving? Who was leaving?
"So why are you telling me?" Scott asked.
"I'm not telling you," Isaac said, "I'm asking you. I'm asking for your advice."
"From me?" Scott asked in disbelief, "Why?"
"Because I trust you."
"Why?"
Wow, Scott really did ask way too many questions. It was like that one day in chemistry all over again.
"Because you always seem to want to do the right thing," Isaac answered.
"I usually have no idea what I'm doing," Scott told him, "Actually I always have no idea what I'm doing."
"Hm," Isaac hummed, "Do you want to let me know what you're doing right now?"
"I'm not going anywhere if that's what you mean," Scott said, "I have way too many people here who need me."
"Well I guess that makes me lucky," Isaac said, "'cause uh… 'cause I don't have anyone, so…"
"What about Delilah?"
Isaac paused. "She's better off without me. I'm not gonna drag her down when she's capable of so much more."
Those words were like knives digging into Delilah's heart. How could he say that he has no one when she was always there? Was that not enough for him? Apparently not. Isaac had never expressed any unhappiness with her so all of this was coming as a shock to her. Then again, he was always so focused on making sure she was taken care of when she could have done the same to him better, even though Delilah thought she was. She covered her mouth so none of them could hear her cry.
"Are you gonna go with them?" Scott asked Isaac.
"Yeah," he answered, twisting the knife even further, "Yeah, I think I will. Tell Delilah I'm sorry. And good luck with the game, though."
Everything else the boys had said after that was all a blur. Delilah had so many emotions running through her that she didn't know which one was stronger. How dare Isaac try to leave without saying anything to her? She though she knew him better than that.
"You're actually leaving?"
Both Isaac and Scott turned at the unexpected voice. Delilah was now standing at the doorway, tears running down her face as she stared at her boyfriend.
Scott cleared his throat. "I'm gonna go help Deaton with that paperwork." He excused himself and left the room.
"Delilah, I-"
"What the hell is going on, Isaac?" Delilah demanded, "I want the truth and I want it now."
Sighing, Isaac ran his hand through his blond curls. "Boyd and Erica think they found another pack. They're planning on leaving Beacon Hills tonight."
"And you're leaving with them," Delilah stated. Slowly Isaac nodded his head. "And you were going to just leave without telling me? Why didn't you ask me to go with you?"
"Seriously? Delilah, you just got adopted. You never would have said yes."
"You don't know that."
"Would you have?" Delilah grew quiet, giving Isaac the confirmation he needed. "Exactly."
"Are you… are you mad that I got adopted?" the hybrid asked.
"What?" Isaac shook his head. "No! Of course I'm not mad. Delilah, nobody is happier for you than I am. You deserve to go to a home that can provide for you the way you always needed. But I just don't have that same thing. Especially now that Anabelle's place burned down and who knows if she'll stay or go either. Beacon Hills just isn't home for me anymore. It hasn't been in years."
"So that's it then?" Delilah asked incredulously, "What about everything you and I have been through together? That's not enough to make you stay? I can't do this without you!"
"You can though," Isaac told her, "You always have been. I'm a nobody here. But you… you've always had so much potential. People love you here and you have so many opportunities. Especially now that you're a healer. And now you have Deaton and Scott-"
"But none of that matters if I don't have you," Delilah interrupted. She grabbed Isaac's hands and begged him to look at her. But his eyes just kept looking down. "Please don't go, Isaac. Please don't do this to me…"
He refused to look up at her because he knew once he did, he would cave in. But he couldn't. Even as he heard her sobbing he wouldn't let that sway him. This what was best for the both of them. And it absolutely killed him to do this. What other choice did he have?
Isaac pulled his hands away from Delilah's, trying his best to ignore her sobs. "I'm sorry, Delilah. But I've made up my mind. I'm leaving."
The expression of Delilah's face went from heartbreak to anger. Biting the inside of her cheek, she nodded her head.
"Fine," she said a little too calmly, "There's the door. You can go. Don't let me stop you." But Isaac didn't move, which made her even more mad. "Leave!"
Hanging his head in shame for hurting the love of his life, something he always promised that he would never do, Isaac left the animal clinic. Delilah had already cried herself dry but she still rested her elbows on the operating table and buried her face in her hands as she processed everything in her head.
Never did she think things would end between them like this. Hell, she never thought things would end at all. She thought they were stronger than this. And now she was never going to see him again. What was she to do now?
"Hey."
She looked up to see Scott standing there. "Oh, sorry." Delilah wiped her tears away. "I'm guessing you heard all of that."
"Yeah, I'm sorry about that," Scott said, "It's a small office." That actually made Delilah chuckle. "I know there's not much I could say or do to make you feel any better, but I do know what it's like to be heartbroken by someone you thought you could love and trust too."
"You're right, you really don't know how to make a girl feel better," Delilah joked, "I just thought he and I could overcome anything together. But he just left so easily. I don't understand…"
"He was right about one thing though," Scott said as he stood on the other side of the table, "You do have so much potential. And Deaton and I are here for you for anything you need."
"Thank you, Scott," the brunette smiled, "I appreciate that."
"I know I said I wasn't planning on going to the game, but I guess Jackson's playing tonight. I have to be there because I don't know what Gerard's planning. Do you want to come with me?"
"I don't know if that's a good idea, Scott."
"Are you sure?" said boy asked, "I think it could do you some good. Help take your mind off everything."
Delilah looked up at Scott who had a gentle smile on his face. She still didn't think it was best if she went, but she didn't think she couldn't turn down someone who was being so kind to her during her heartbreak. So she smiled back.
"Okay. I'll go."
She was quickly regretting her decision. And the game hadn't even started yet. Delilah was sitting by herself at the top of the bleachers, chin in her hand. Scott was sitting on the bench on the sidelines with Stiles and Natalie. The other members of the lacrosse team was on the field warming up.
Well… not all of them.
Isaac hadn't called or texted her since he left. Not that Delilah really expected him to anyway. She thought about messaging him but there was no point. He probably didn't wanna hear from her. It was upsetting. Despite dealing with the hunters and Jackson, this should be a happy time for Delilah. She was finally going to be put in a stable home and should be celebrating these incredible powers that actually helped people. Plus she was making friends in those she had never expected to. Everything was supposed to be fine. But everything was just so meaningless without him.
On the other side of the bleachers were her old friends. They were all sitting together, laughing and having a great time. Even though Delilah was glad she wasn't associated with them anymore, she couldn't help but feel envious of them. They got to live their lives like everything was normal, not knowing what was really out there. Plus they all had each other. Delilah had no one right now.
This was a bad idea. She shouldn't have come here. Maybe she should go back to the Hale and Fierro house. Delilah was just about to stand up when she heard a chilling voice.
"Scott, can you hear me?" she heard Gerard Argent ask from next to the bleachers. She looked over at Scott and she could see that he could hear him too. "Ah, you can. Good. Then listen closely because the game is about to get interesting. Let's put a real clock on this game, Scott. I'll give you until the last 30 seconds. When that scoreboard clock begins counting down from 30, if you haven't given me Derek, then Jackson is gonna kill someone."
Shit.
"So tell me, Scott, who's gonna die tonight?" Gerard continued, "Should it be your mother, who so bravely came out to support you? Or the sheriff, your best friend's father? Or your other best friend's entire family? Or how about the pretty little redhead who managed to survive the bite of an Alpha? Or maybe one of these innocent teenagers with their whole life ahead of them? Or should I do everyone a favor and kill that ridiculous coach? Or… the half werewolf and half caladrius who's been listening in this entire time?"
Oh crap, he noticed. Delilah looked over at Scott who was staring back at her in fear.
"It's up to you, Scott. But you are going to help me take Derek down. Because if you don't - I'll have Jackson rip someone's head off right in the middle of the field and drench everyone you love and care about in blood."
Then the referee blew the whistle. Let the games begin.
Scott had been benched throughout the entirety of the game so far to Delilah's surprise. Shouldn't the co-captain be a part of the championship game? This must have been a part of Gerard's sick plan. And it was definitely working because Beacon Hills was getting creamed bad.
It may have only been the first quarter but it was not looking so good for their home team. Stiles was actually playing, which was the first time Delilah had ever seen him on the field. After watching him play it wasn't hard to figure out why. The boy had the athleticism of a baby deer. He was so shaky, he kept getting tackled left and right, and he even got in the face with the lacrosse ball. How was he dating one of the strongest athletes in the whole school when he flinched at his own shadow?
All hope was about to be lost, especially when she saw Scott trying to get onto the field but Coach Finstock wasn't letting him. Delilah's eyes wandered around the field and they widened when she saw a lacrosse player with the number 14 on his jersey was walking onto the field and towards the bench. He sat next to Scott, who also was surprised to see him.
"You came to help," Scott said to Isaac.
He flashed that smirk that Delilah fell in love with years ago. "I came to win."
"The game or Delilah back?" Scott asked.
"Delilah." Isaac looked at the back of the bleachers where his love was sitting with hopeful eyes. "That is if she'll have me back?"
All she could was smile since she was rendered speechless. They might have needed to have a long talk about earlier but that honestly didn't matter at the moment. Isaac came back for her. He was staying.
He turned back to Scott. "You got a plan yet?"
"No," Scott said, "right now it's pretty much just keep Jackson from killing anyone."
"Well, that might be easier if you're actually in the game," Isaac told him, "We have to make it so Coach has no choice but to play you."
"How do we do that? He's got a bench full of guys he can use before he ever puts me on the field."
The two boys looked at the benchwarmers on the other side of them and then back at each other. They seemed to have the same idea, although Delilah wasn't sure what that idea was. Knowing Isaac, it was probably going to be violent.
"Can you do it without putting anyone in the hospital?" Scott asked him.
Exhaling, Isaac said, "I can try." Then he pulled on his helmet and ran onto the field.
"Isaac, please be careful out there," Delilah begged from the bleachers.
"I'll do my best, my dancing queen," Isaac promised her.
The game resumed when Isaac got into position. One of the home players had the ball and ran towards the goalie. But then Isaac bumped into him and knocked him down, spraining the player's shoulder.
Yep. Delilah knew her boyfriend all too well.
"Lahey!" Coach yelled at him, "Ramirez, you're in."
He sent the next player on the bench out onto the field. Isaac knocked down that player too.
Coach was getting even more irritated. "Murphy. You're in." Then Isaac knocked down three more players. "Lahey! Seriously, what the hell is your problem?"
Now Delilah wasn't one to think people getting hurt or Isaac being smug was all that funny, but when her love shrugged his shoulders, she couldn't help but laugh. Isaac heard this and smiled up at Delilah. He blew her a kiss and she patted her heart, letting him know that after everything, she still loved him.
The next play started but this time, Isaac was the one that was knocked down by none other than Jackson. Delilah gasped and covered her mouth as the collision sounded pretty harsh. She quickly ran down the steps and onto the field and knelt next to Isaac and Scott.
"It's not broken," Isaac groaned, referring to his leg, "But I can't move it. I think Jackson nicked me 'cause I can feel it spreading."
"You want to play chess, Scott?" both Scott and Delilah heard Gerard say, "Then you better be willing to sacrifice your own pawns."
"I'll go with him," Delilah told Scott, nodding towards Isaac as he was being placed on a gurney by the EMTs, "I'll make sure he's taken care of. Good luck."
"You too," Scott said.
With one final nod, Delilah left with Isaac and the EMTs. They were taken to the locker room where they expected Isaac to be treated. But then the EMTs flipped the gurney over, making Isaac fall onto the floor.
"Isaac!" Delilah gasped, rushing to his side, "What the hell did you-"
She was cut off mid-scold when she lifted her head. In between the EMTS who she realized were actually hunters was Gerard. He had a sword on his hand and a devilish grin on his face. Delilah grabbed Isaac and tried to pull him on the other side of the locker room. It was hard to do so since he was still paralyzed and was much heavier than her petite self.
"It was a good effort, Isaac," Gerard said as the young couple tried to get away, "It was. This would be so much more poetic if it were halftime."
"Delilah, you need to get out of here," Isaac tried to sway her, "Go find Scott."
"No, I'm not leaving here without you," Delilah told him.
"How precious," Gerard taunted, "Another teenage romance just like Scott and Allison. But haven't you two learned? In this world, young love is doomed to fail."
He slowly walked towards them with the tip of his sword scraping against the floor. Isaac managed to pull himself up by grabbing onto one of the sinks. He pushed Delilah behind him and she clung onto his jersey for dear life. She squeezed her eyes shut as she braced herself for the worst. Gerard held up the sword like a baseball bad and was ready to swing when he saw Isaac smiling when he looked behind him. The old man looked into the mirror to see Scott standing behind him, eyes glowing amber.
One of the hunters struck at Scott but he was quick to take him down. Since there were two hunters, Delilah decided to help her fellow peer out. She made sure Isaac was okay before jumping in on the fight, eyes glowing violet. The hunter that wasn't fighting Scott came at her but Delilah dodged his punch. She fan-kicked him in the face, sending him onto the floor. She hopped over the hand that tried to swipe at her feet. When he got back up, he grabbed her in headlock. This did not trip her up. In fact, Delilah elbowed him in the face and kicked back at his groin. When he doubled over in pain, she grabbed him by the shirt and threw him at the wall, knocking him out cold along with the hunter that Scott was dealing with.
God, Isaac loved that girl.
Delilah and Scott looked back at Isaac but they quickly noticed something off. "Where is he?" Scott asked, referring to Gerard.
"He probably went back onto the field to watch over Jackson," Isaac pointed out.
"I'm gonna go back out there," Scott said, "Are you two going to be okay?"
"Yeah, we'll be fine," Delilah told him, "Just go. Go!" Then Scott left and she turned her attention to Isaac. "Are you still paralyzed?"
Isaac nodded. "A little. But the toxins are wearing off. I should be fine in a couple minutes."
It got quiet as neither of the two knew how to approach their fight from the animal clinic earlier. But then Isaac looked at her sadly.
"Delilah, I am so sorry," he apologized, "I promise I will never leave you again."
"I just can't believe you came back," Delilah said, "I thought you said Beacon Hills wasn't your home anymore."
"No, but you're my home," Isaac told her, "and I wanna be where you are."
"Do you really mean that?" the hybrid asked.
"I do. You're my everything, baby. I'm willing to do anything to keep my promise to stick with you through the good times and bad. I just really hope you could forgive me."
Delilah stroked his cheek. "I love you to the moon and back, Isaac. Nothing could ever change that."
Smiling in relief, Isaac echoed, "I love you to the moon and back."
The brunette gently brought his head down and met him in a tender and loving kiss. Neither of them noticed the purple veins running through Delilah's arm as the hand that was on his heart healed the paralysis, even when Isaac was finally able to wrap his arms around her.
Their kiss was broken up when they heard panicked screaming coming from the field. Jackson must have gotten someone. Isaac grabbed Delilah's hand and they ran out of the locker room and back over to the field.
As they reached they field, they saw Scott along with the Coach, Scott's mother, and several other bystanders surrounding someone that was lying on the ground. They got closer and Delilah gasped when she saw that it was Jackson. Scott's mother placed her ear over the boy's chest, probably to check for a heartbeat.
"He's not breathing," she told the coach, "No pulse."
"Nothing?" Coach asked.
"Nothing." She pulled back his jersey to reveal blood.
"Oh my God," Lydia shrieked, "There's blood. There's blood."
Scott's eyes widened as he noticed something. He patted Isaac. "Look."
He, Isaac, and Delilah noticed that Jackson's claws had blood on them, meaning…
"He did it to himself?"
