Author Notes: This is a short one-shot chapter that focuses upon Haruhi, whom everyone in the group loves to death. I wrote it initially for the 100-theme challenge at Deviantart. We hope you enjoy the chapter.

Broken Pieces

There have been broken pieces in my life ever since you left us that cold winter's day. I remember sitting by your bedside as you were growing weak from the sickness that had affected you through the months on end. At first, I didn't understand a word the doctors had said to dad in the hallway; the only things I understood were that you would get better and we could be a family again; as a small child, I had no comprehension of anything adults dealt with. My mind was on you getting better and coming home to be with dad and me again.

My childhood innocence and hope of seeing you again were once again proven wrong. You wouldn't be home again.

I remember,

Remember the faint and steady tone of the heart monitor and the doctors placing a sheet over you, they announced the time of your death, and I did not fully understand what was going on.

The first piece of my heart finally shattered and was hanging by a thread. I hope that the doctors had made a mistake and you'd appear in the room you had once occupied smiling at me and telling me that you love me and would always be here no matter the circumstances.

My heart's final piece shattered as dad and I stood outside the crematorium, and I held his hand tightly, a small faint whisper of words coming from my mouth as I looked up at him. He was holding back his sobs as we looked at the smoke rising into the heavens.

"Does this mean I won't get to see mommy anymore?"

Looking down at me, dad only whispers the words that I did not hear, and my heart finally lost the last ounce of strength it had left.

"I'm sorry, Haruhi…but no, you won't."
