CW: torture, drugs, canon typical violence

"What's got you thinking babe?" Danny watched his partner weave the black Camaro through the nightly traffic. They had just arrested Farrow - or Major William Corrigan for murder and counterfeiting money, trying to get it off the island. Now on their way back to HQ, the Jersey detective couldn't help but notice the scowl on Steve's face. Something was definitely wrong.

"It's nothing, just stupid thoughts I guess." The former SEAL shrugged, not sure what else to tell his friend and partner.

Turning in his seat, the blonde raised his brows. "Are you sure? Because your face tells a different story. I think it's a new one, not aneurysm face, this one's more like someone peed in your fave field meal."

Wincing at the mental image, Steve turned onto the parking space at the back of the lot. "Real? Did you have to make me think about that? It's just…Karen's been so different the last three days, I'm not sure what's going on."

"Have you tried talking to her?"

"Of course I tried." They got out, the former SEAL breathing out a deep sigh. "I thought she was angry because I couldn't make it to our lunch date when I took over Ellie's case, but then she's sneaking off to the beach at night, talking on the phone. You think she's with someone else?"

Shaking his head, Danny walked around the Camaro. How could Steve even think something like that? He'd seen them together, Karen would never hurt him that way, she's been through that situation herself. "No, maybe it's one of her cases. You know she's there for them around the clock."

Nodding his head, the two partners headed inside the building to get their reports done. "Do you think it might be Ellie? Because we're friends?"

"You mean she's jealous?" The blonde didn't think that was the case. "I think you should just ask her, don't overthink it."

"I hope you're right, Danny, I don't want to fuck this up."

Clapping his hand on the former SEAL's shoulder, the two of them headed up to their offices, while Karen anxiously listened to the dial sound of her phone a few streets away.

She paced inside her apartment, nibbling on her thumbnail. For hours the brunette tried to reach Doris, she needed to talk to her, needed her help.

Finally she could hear the clock on the other line telling her that her call had been answered. "Doris? Are you there? I need to talk to you."

Only soft breathing could be heard as well as the occasional rustle of leaves in the background. Closing her eyes, Karen sat down on her couch, taking a deep breath before she continued. "Okay, you can't talk…I know you're trying to protect Steve, and Mary, but you need to come back. Wo Fat is looking for you a-and Steve wants to know where you are, too, to make sure you're okay. I-I guess he misses you. And I"

Her rambling was cut off by a quick beeping on the end of the line, leaving her with no other answer. Karen leaned her head back, blinking away the tears that threatened to leave her eyes. There was no one else she could talk to, not the team, Steve or Danny, because he'd definitely tell his partner and her parents wouldn't understand a word she was saying. She brushed her hand over the slight swell of her lower belly, it wasn't big enough to notice yet, but she could feel some of her clothes getting tighter now.

Maybe she could confide in Ellie. She knew the deputy prosecutor was friends with the former SEAL, but she was a woman. Of course she could have talked to Kono, yet she was part of the task force and answered to McGarrett. If he smelled something was going on, she'd have to tell him.

No, Karen would ask Ellie, maybe she could help her out of this. Without another thought, the brunette sent her a text, asking to meet them at Steve's home for a nice fishing trip on Sunday. After the blonde told her she'd be there, Karen felt a slight weight lifted off her shoulders - and her heart. Maybe it would all work out in the end. Breathing out a soft sigh, she made her way to the bedroom not taking heed to the large balcony window being opened with a quiet click and the dark figure making their way inside her apartment.

"Hey, where's Karen? I thought she was going to be here?"

Steve lightly scratched his chin, not sure what to tell the blonde. She sat down next to him, looking out on the ocean and taking a sip of her beer. "She was excited last night when I told her about today and this morning she texted me that she wasn't going to make it."

"Maybe one of the kids needed her help." Ellie shrugged her shoulders and took the rod, throwing out the bait.

"Nice technique." He watched her with a smile, his own beer in his hand.

The blonde grinned, telling him about the summers back home in Australia, where she went to Port Phillip Bay and would fish with her father. He taught her the best techniques to get the biggest fish and how to cook them afterwards, no use in throwing those back in the water. Not too long after, she got her first bite and pulled it in with Steve trying to tell her how to do it all the while.

"Watch and learn, McGarrett."

With raised brows, the former SEAL stepped back and let her work, only helping to get the big fish on land. Ellie smiled triumphantly, taking out the hook and putting the fish into the bucket they put there before they started. He was shocked when he saw her work like that, thinking she was more of a catch-and-release type of gal, no to fish violence and all that, but again she surprised him. The deputy prosecutor shrugged and leaned back in her chair and took a sip of her beer.

"Well, laugh it up, because you're gonna gut it, cook it and serve that fish to me with an ice-cold beer."

Steve laughed when she told him it was payback when he went behind her back with the warrant for Farrow's home. He knew it was the least he could do, but he wished Karen was there, they would've had fun together. Grabbing his phone when Ellie went inside for a bathroom break he tried to call her again, but still only the mailbox.

"Hey, this is Karen. I can't get your call right now, so leave a message."

The former SEAL sighed and leaned back, balancing his beer on his leg. "Hey babe, just wanted to check in. Hope you're okay." Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes. "I just wanted you to know that you can talk to me about everything. You know that, right? I-I love you, babe."

On the other side of the island, Karen was bound and gagged in a dark basement. With tears streaming down her cheeks she listened to the voicemail Steve left her. She struggled against her bonds, trying to get away from the Asian man that took her away from her apartment.

I'm sorry, Steve. I love you

Steve breathed hard when he listened to the gunshots on the other end. Victor had lost his brother and his father was the price of retribution.

Karen was pregnant with their first kid and he hoped she was nowhere near the house.

"Commander McGarrett?" It wasn't his father and neither Victor.

"Hello? Is my father dead?" He needed to know. The voice on the other side assured him that John McGarrett was all right before Steve asked for his name. Once Detective Williams introduced himself, he asked to get his father on the phone.

"Hello son." The officer said, after he finally caught his breath and smiled when he listened to his son. It had been such a long time since they saw each other. Of course Karen, Steve's girlfriend visited him for lunch or dinner, but the SEAL was off on a mission in Korea.

"Dad!"

Steve woke up in a white tiled room, trying to remember how he got there. All he knew was that he wanted to get to Karen, needing to see she was alright, but he never got that far. His shoulder was hurting like hell from a bullet graze just like his head felt like it was splitting in two and he could see injection marks when he sat up. Something was definitely wrong here. He got up and walked over to one of the walls, there had to be a way to get out of there. Banging against the tiles and calling out to whoever was holding him.

The room grew dark and he saw a video projection from when he was a kid. His mother took it in a time when the world was still okay, when his family was still okay. Then it was cut off. The lights turned on and a hissing noise sounded in the room instead of the children's laughter. Steve tried to cover his nose and mouth from the gas, taking off his button up, but it was too strong and with a last croaking noise, his eyes fluttered closed. Someone came into the room, wearing a hazmat suit, although he couldn't tell if it was only in his head.

Danny, Lou, Chin and Kono raced through the city, trying to get a hold of Steve. Not just him, but none of them could reach Karen and that didn't sit well with the Jersey detective. Even if those two would have stopped talking, he knew that she would at least talk to him. They arrived on scene and the first thing Lou saw was blood, Danny's heart stopped.

"He's still not picking up. Neither was Karen." The dial tone was still ringing in his ears when Chin turned to him, Steve's phone in his hands.

Kono suggested they should check the hospitals, so the rest made to call them but Danny stopped it with his own senses. He found tire tracks next to the Marquis that only gave him one suggestion. "Somebody took him."

Steve walked up the stairs, dressed in his Navy blues, only half listening to the tourist complaining about his missing golf clubs. Funny how trivial things could be so important to some people.

"Steve!"

His head shot up and he searched the precinct for the familiar brunette waves. There she stood, glowing radiantly in her white summer dress and her hand anxiously rubbing her bump. "Karen, babe, are you all right?"

Instantly her arms moved around his neck, breathing in his scent. He had been gone for a while and both missed the other desperately.

"I'm fine. I'm so glad you're home." Steve pulled her tighter into his arms, laying a sweet kiss on her crown.

He looked up and turned to Duke, asking where his father was, but before he could answer Detective Williams came out of his office. Together they walked over to Captain Kelly's office where John McGarrett sat in front of the desk.

"John!" The brunette ran over to the older man, pulling him into a tight hug. Seconds later she moved back, brushing her hand over the cleaned and scanned cuts on his face.

He gave her a warm smile, placing a soft kiss on her temple. "Karen, darling. Everything's fine, I'm okay now."

Nodding her head, she moved over and watched Steve tightly embrace his father. "Welcome home son."

"You all right?" The SEAL watched him closely, making sure he really was fine.

John reassured him, patting his shoulder and turning to the Asian looking man, introducing him as Captain Chin Ho Kelly, the man that was his partner before he rose in ranks. They shook hands and Steve held out his arm for Karen to step forward. He thanked every god and angel up there that she wasn't home with his father but visiting her parents in Diamond Head.

"What is going on?" John asked when his son inquired about Victor Hess, knowing there was more to the story than just a burglary like he thought before.

The commander felt his fiancée's hand tighten in his jacket and he cleared his throat. No use in keeping it a secret when he needed to know the truth. "The only people who knew I was transporting his brother were men in my detail, right? There is no way that Victor could have found out unless he had help."

And then he was blinded by the sunlight, like someone shone a flashlight at him.

Blinking, his father and Karen were gone and it looked like he was in a basement. Steve tried to move, but his arms were restrained, as were his feet. When he felt the IV in his arm he worked harder to get free, but the door opened and a dark skinned woman entered. She carried what looked like one of those doctor's bags, so he assumed she was working somewhere in the medical field. He asked her why he was there, what they wanted from him, but she ignored him, taking a penlight to test his pupil reflexes before she pulled out a granola bar. They were giving him drugs, for what he didn't know and he wasn't going to eat anything they offered, his training rooting too deep as to let them get to him. Steve spit out the piece he bit off from the energy bar and the woman scowled at him, turning up the dosage of the chemicals. He knew he was going under again, the sounds of her leaving the room fading away and he was pulled into an alternate reality again.

Salty wetness ran down her face as she watched the man she loved get tortured by Wo Fat. The dark skinned woman held an old rag over his face while his adopted brother emptied a bucket over his head.

Waterboarding - that's what Steve told her one night when they laid awake after their love making.

A thunderstorm raged outside and the rain pelted against the windows, but they were safe inside his house. Cuddled together under the sheets, Karen brushed her fingers over his cheek, enjoying the feeling of his beard scratching against her skin. They talked about their demons, the things that haunted the other at night. He told her about some of the things he'd seen, some of the things he'd been through. That's when Steve told her about the time he trained to be a SEAL, was trained in every imaginable torture technique, how they had to undergo it themselves.

The brunette didn't know what to make of it, all she could do was be there for him when his nightmares got the best of him.

But now, it felt like his nightmares took a hold of him again.

They had taken her at night, a dark figure standing over her as she laid there thinking about how she was going to work out the right words to finally talk to Steve. She couldn't see his face, but knew he was going to hurt her if she struggled. A pinch was felt in her neck and the world around her tilted. The next time she woke up, she was in a basement with no idea of where or when, the only other things in the room were a TV and a camera facing her way.

Now she was tortured as well by the pictures flitting over the scream, Steve's groans as he struggled to breath before they stopped, pulling the cloth off his face before they started anew until the bucket was empty. With every second that passed, her struggles got harder, her wrists moving against her bonds, the zip ties digging into her skin.

The former SEAL gasped, choking on the water before he leaned down taking a deep breath. He was trained for this and it would take Wo Fat a long time to break him, but the Asian man was patient, he had time.

"You're never gonna break me." Steve watched the smirk on Wo Fat's face widen, a cold calculated look.

He turned towards the sink, refilling the bucket with water, telling his adopted brother that behavioral engineering did in fact work, it only took time. He would break him, in the end he knew that it wasn't the physical torture but what he had in his pocket or more who he had bound in the next room over.

Wo Fat repeated his torture again, listening to the gasps and chokes before he motioned the female to take away the rag. Steve leaned forward, coughing to get the water out of his lungs. "Now, tell me, where's my father?"

"I don't know." He looked up at the man he had been hunting for years, succeeding in bringing him to justice only to lose him again to his trickery.

The Asian man regarded him with distaste. This man was his adopted brother and yet he was about to kill him for the location of his father. "You expect me to believe that?"

The former SEAL shook his head. Of course he wouldn't believe that, but he had to try. "But it's the truth."

Rolling his eyes, Wo Fat nodded at the woman. Again she pulled the cloth over his face, holding on tight to make sure he wasn't trashing too much. Once the bucket was empty again, he put it aside watching the commander gasping and coughing, trying to get air into his lungs again and again. "You know the thing with truth is, people like to bend it a little for their own gains. Just like your little girlfriend."

He grinned at Steve holding out a tablet for him to see. It showed Karen, bound to a chair. The ties already digging into her wrists, leaving behind bloody smears. "Let her go! She has nothing to do with this."

"Oh believe me, McGarrett, she has everything to do with this. Karen Bishop has been talking to your mother for months since Doris left and she never bothered to tell you." Wo Fat sneered at him, nestling shoving the device in his face.

Shaking his head, Steve blinked up at him. He couldn't wrap his head around the words he spoke. It was impossible, Karen wouldn't do that. "You're lying!"

"Am I?"

Tapping the screen her wails could be heard and it broke his heart. She was profusely apologizing, tears streaming down her face while she struggled against her bonds. "I'm so sorry, Steve. I didn't want to hurt you, but Doris wanted to know you were safe. She told me she liked me, that I was good for you. She never gave me details of where she was, just that she was fine and well. I never meant to hurt you. Please stop hurting him, please!"

Wo Fat motioned for the rag again, Karen's cries sounding shrill in his ears. Steve prepared himself again for the wet torture, drawing himself deep into his mind. She betrayed him, all the time he asked his family for the whereabouts of his mother, she could have let him contact her. How could he ever trust her again?

"This can end if you just tell me what I want to know." He was getting tired of listening to the wails of Miss Bishop. "I don't want to kill you, if I would, I'd have done it a long time ago. All I want to know is, where my father is."

"You should have asked Doris when she came to visit you in Colorado." Steve told him, leaning back in his chair.

"Oh, I asked our mother. She couldn't tell me, either."

The former SEAL blinked. Wo Fat said our, it was impossible. He ran the DNA, he wasn't his brother. "She's not your mother!" Another sting in his neck and he felt his world tilt again, Karen crying to let him go was the last thing he heard.

"Please, just let him go." Karen mumbled, watching how Steve's unconscious body was put back into the chair. Wherever they brought him before that left him a lot weaker than he had been during his torture. She knew that he always was the tough guy, nothing could hurt him, but now.

A man stepped into the room, holding up a pair of tongs, an evil smile on his face as he moved up to her. "Now little lady, I've got a nice job for you. You're going to do exactly what I'm telling you to do."

He cut through her bonds, pulling her out of the chair and holding on tightly so she wouldn't get away from him. They walked through a hallway, passing several doors and corners before he stopped them in front of another metal door. Inside she could hear Steve groaning and something that sounded like an electro shocker.

"Please, just stop hurting him. May-maybe I can talk to Doris, let Wo Fat know about his father. She'll have to know something." Karen struggled against the large man holding her when he dragged her into the large room.

"Ah, now see, our guest has arrived. Now she can see it for herself without the barrier of these walls between you and her." Wo Fat smirked, holding the taser rod against his chest. The former SEAL grunted, feeling the electrical shocks running though his system, his heart pumping rapidly and losing its rhythm.

The Asian took buckets stacked together and sat in front of Steve, before he asked him about his mother and her mission to kill his father. "But instead your mother died in that op."

Nodding his head, Wo Fat turned around looking at Karen who still struggled in the grip of his henchman. "She never forgave herself for killing an innocent woman who had just become a new mother."

Karen knew that Doris took in Wo Fat as her own, raising him before her superiors discovered it. She abandoned him, letting him fend for himself, making her hate even more when he discovered the death of his real mother.

"You see? She was my mother, too. If Doris knew where my father was she would have told me." He looked at Steve, knowing he was hurting him more with the fact that Doris raised him than any torture technique he used before. "But with your persistence, I can't help but believe you know where your government is holding him."

"I don't."

Wo Fat stood from his seat, watching the former SEAL intently. "That may be true." He started walking over to Karen and grabbing his gun, holding it to her temple. She let out a frightened gasp, tears running down her cheeks. "But I need to be convinced."

"I'm telling the truth." Steve called, watching in horror as the Asian man took a hold of her arm and dragged her from the room. "I don't know where your father is."

She struggled against his grip, feeling the gun digging deeper into her skin. "No! Let me go. Please, don't hurt him anymore, please."

"Shut up, I'm tired of listening to your wails." He raised his hand and hit her with the but of his gun. With a grunt she fell to the floor, her temple stinging and stars dancing before her eyes. Karen tried to keep calm, but with her hormones being wacky she was turning into more of a blubbering mess.

Wo Fat looked up when he heard water hitting the pavement. None of the pipes in the facility were leaking so something in the room they held McGarrett must be wrong. Pulling the brunette along by the back of her shirt, he opened the door. Steve still sat in his chair, with his little doctor in front of him. "Stay by the door." He closed it behind them and saw the pipe. It wasn't just a leak, this was taken down.

Slowly walking over, he saw the woman's head held up by a broomstick, that's when he knew something was definitely wrong. Grabbing his guns from his back, Wo Fat prepared to shoot, but Steve held the taser in his hand, lifting his feet and shocking him.

Karen screamed, huddling near the shelf by the door. She closed her eyes, only listening to the shouts and grunts as the two men fought. The former SEAL wrestled Wo Fat to the ground, before they fought for the syringe that contained the drugs they pumped into him. With the water making it too slippery and his strength fading, Steve wasn't able to get to it fast enough, so his adopted brother gave him the last dose. A yell left his lips and Karen cried out for him.

He fell back, trying to get a hold of the chair to keep him up and fighting, hitting and kicking him. Steve had to get them out of here in one piece. No matter how much he hated that Karen was able to talk to his mother he needed her to be safe. They scrambled across the floor for the guns, cocking them.

"Karen, keep your eyes closed." He called out to her, his eyes never leaving the other man, the enemy he had been hunting for years.

Wo Fat smirked at him, keeping his gun trained on Steve. "You're not gonna kill your brother, are you?"

"You're not my brother."

Steve sat at the beach, a beer in hand and his father next to him. "I miss this view."

John hummed, a smile on his face as he turned to him. "I'm glad you're home, son. Not just for me."

They turned around to see Karen walking through the garden, the light summer dress flowing around her bump. The SEAL smiled. "Me too, Dad." He bumped the neck of their beers and took a sip, before he got up and met her half way.

She returned his smile, slinging her arms around his neck. "Hello Commander."

"Hello future Mrs. McGarrett. I'm glad you're fine." He leaned down, his hands on her waist, lightly brushing along the bump around her middle. "I love you."

"I love you, too."

"Steve, please, wake up." After the shots rang out and neither Steve nor Wo Fat gave any indication of what was going on, Karen had scrambled up, looking down at the dead man that caused so much pain and heartache. She moved over to the former SEAL, checking him over for his injuries. Besides the official signs of torture she only found a deep graze on his forehead near his temple. Thank god.

Kneeling next to him, Karen bedded his head in her lap, stroking her finger in his wet hair. "I'm so sorry, please forgive me."

"Steve?"

Danny, Chin, Kono and Lou moved into the room, guns ready to take down any threat that might be coming at them. They saw Wo Fat on the ground, a bullet lodged inside his head.

"Danny." The brunette croaked, tears streaming down her face as they neared her.

The Jersey detective kneeled down next to her, taking his partner by the shoulder and helping him to sit up. "Steve, you all right?"

Steve let out a soft gasp, his eyes finding Karen's before he moved onto his friend. "I'm all right." He leaned back against a shelf, reaching out for the small hand laying next to his, giving her a tight squeeze. He was going to be fine, his friends and family were here now. "Hey, where's my father? Where's my father? I wanna see my dad."

Karen's lips wobbled, her heart breaking as she heard his words. Danny swallowed the lump in his throat, turning to the team before they settled on his partner again. "Buddy, your dad died four years ago, okay?"

"Steve?" He tried to comprehend it, trying to make sense of everything that had happened in the last hours. The brunette let the tears flow anew as she listened to his sons, putting her hand on his cheek and pulling his head in her shoulder. She wished she could take all the pain and hurt away from him, make the last four years go away and bring his family back together. But not even she had that power.

"I'm alright, I'm good." Steve finally said, putting his arms around Danny's and Chin's shoulder. "Let's get out of here."

Together they helped him up and led him out of the facility. Kono stayed back and reached for Karen.

"You okay?"

The brunette nodded, brushing her hands over her cheeks. "I will be as soon as we're out of here." Together they made their way out of the building, Kono keeping a tight grin on Karen, fearing she might collapse once the adrenaline rush was over.

They had been brought to Tripler for observation. Both Steve and Karen were given fluids to flush out the drugs they were hit with and get their cuts and bruises treated.

"Excuse me, when can I see Steve McGarrett? He was brought in with me." Karen wanted to talk to him as soon as possible, trying to explain what was going on with Doris.

The nurse smiled at her, checking the patient sheets before leading the brunette to his room. "He's awake. I think Commander McGarrett would like to see you as well."

She fidgeted with the bandages around her wrists before she raised one hand to knock. When she could hear his grunt, Karen entered the room, swallowing the lump that had formed in her throat.

"Steve?" She asked, stepping around the curtain towards his bed. The former SEAL turned to her, holding his hand out for Karen to take.

He pulled her down to sit on his bed, needing to know what really was going on with her. "Tell me, what happened up until now? What's going on with my mom?"

"She, she really wanted to make sure you were doing fine, that you were safe and kind of helped me to understand what you have been through. I-I never wanted to hurt you, never wanted to feel like you can't trust me anymore." Karen clasped her hands on her lap, not daring to look at Steve, fearing he would send her away and never speak to her.

He searched for her hand, his fingers moving between her rigid ones hoping to ease some of the anxiety she felt. "When he told me you had contact with Doris I never wanted to have anything to do with you. I felt betrayed because you kept this information from me, but I asked Kono to take a look, not because I don't trust you, but because I wanted to know if what she told you was the truth. My mom has always been a master at evading and that's what she did with you, too. Even if you tried, you couldn't have gotten her to tell you where she was."

"I'm sorry, I"

"Shut up, I forgive you, but please from now on tell me everything that's going on in your life." Steve pulled her into his side, embracing her tightly before he laid a kiss on her forehead. "I love you."

Karen let out a sigh, snuggling closer to him aware of his injuries. "I love you, too, Commander."

She still had one more little secret to tell him, but that could wait one more day.
