"I understand that he has to make the 'correct' decisions and all that," Dr. Crusher said as she and Troi ate lunch in her office in sickbay, "but I still don't see what the harm would have been in letting me give something to the Ornarans to help ease their withdrawal symptoms."

"You do know the possible harm though, Beverly."

Dr. Crusher sighed. "Yes, I do. I'm just venting. There's nothing that can be done now."

"You feel like you should have been able to do something more but weren't able to."

"That's exactly it!"

"But Beverly," Troi said, smiling, "you've already done what you could. Without you, the captain might have not even realized that the problem was addiction, not disease."

"That may be true, but any self-respecting physician can detect the signs of withdrawal."

"Yes, but those observations led the captain to make his decision to withhold the coils. Your compassion made a difference."

"I hope that's true," Dr. Crusher said.
