It's 3am and I am tired as hell but excited to get another chapter out for you guys! I hope you all enjoy!
While Scott was finally telling Allison the truth about her mother, Derek and Anabelle walked through the rubble and debris of the bank to look for Erica. The tension in the air was way too thick for the she-wolf. Derek hadn't said a damn thing but he didn't need to when Anabelle could read every single thought. She tried not to, but his inner monologue was practically screaming at her. It mostly consisted of one thought.
"My baby sister is alive."
It was still such a huge shock to both of them. They could have sworn that Cora was in the house when the fire happened. Obviously she made it out alive. But where had she been all this time? Why didn't she ever look for Derek? Anabelle could hear him trying to solve that mystery in his head. She was curious as well. But it was clear he didn't want to talk about it and she decided not to push her luck in trying to get him to open up to her.
Because they finally found Erica.
Actually, they found Erica's body. It was in a supply closet. Anabelle felt her stomach churn at the horrible sight and the stench of rotting flesh. Who knows how long she had been dead for? It was bad enough to witness anything like this. Knowing that it was not only someone you knew, but also someone you viewed as like a younger sibling just made this much more gut wrenching. Erica was just a kid too. She had a whole life ahead of her and she would never get to experience any of it- her first kiss, going to college, having a family… it was a tragedy.
Poor Derek was taking the loss even harder. They had arrived way too late. He had failed his beta. Both of his betas. Now Boyd and his long lost sister were on the loose, ready to kill anyone and everyone who comes their way. And he didn't know what to do. So he just scooped up Erica's lifeless body in his arms.
His mate reached for him. "Derek…"
But he shook his head, not wanting to talk. There was no time for talking. They had to find Boyd and Cora fast. People could die if they don't. And Derek wasn't going to let another innocent person's life slip through his fingers.
So after they gave Erica a proper burial in the middle of the woods, Derek searched through one end of the preserve while Anabelle and Scott went in other directions in hopes of finding the feral betas faster if they were split up. Of course Derek didn't like being separated from his mate just in case she got hurt, but she just kept telling him to stop worrying about her and to concentrate on finding Boyd and his sister. So that's just what he did.
There was no trace of either of their scents throughout his end of the preserve. It was a big area, it could end up taking all night to find them. But Derek did find some footprints stamped into the mud so he decided to follow those and see where they led. Because his head was down and he was trying to focus on what he was trying to do he had accidentally bumped into someone. His instant reaction was to strike but Anabelle had caught his fist before he could hit her head.
"Relax, it's just me!" she told him, "It's just me."
"Sorry," Derek said, lowering his fist.
Anabelle looked at the footprints. "You've been following them too?"
"With no such luck," Derek sighed. He leaned against a tree and crossed his arms. "I still can't believe that after all these years Cora's actually alive."
"I know, I still haven't been able to wrap my head around it either. But you're happy about it, right?"
"Of course I am. That's my little sister. I'm happy to know that she's alive." Derek looked down at his feet. "Well, alive for now. Not if we have to kill her and Boyd."
"We won't let it come to that," Anabelle told him, "As long as they don't kill anyone then we won't have to either."
Raising his eyebrow, the alpha asked, "How are you so calm right now?"
"Panicking's not gonna help us find them." Anabelle cringed as she ran her hand through her dark curls. "Maybe that hot yoga does help. Damn it."
Derek just chuckles, the first time he had cracked a smile all night. Only Anabelle was able to do that, even in such a stressful situation. She smiled back at him, relieved that she could make him feel a little bit better, even if only for a short moment. And the moment was short lived when Derek's phone rang.
"It's Scott," he said before answering the call and put it on speaker, "Did you find them?"
"Yes and no," Scott stretched out, "I did find them but then I lost them."
"You lost them?" Anabelle echoed. She groaned and rubbed her temples.
"Yeah, I kind of had to."
Grimacing, Derek said, "Wasn't exactly the plan."
"I know," Scott said, "which is why I think that we should stick together. Trust me, he's too strong, too fast, and way too angry for one person to handle. We've got to do this together."
"Look, Anabelle and I are at the trails by the entrance to the preserve," Derek told him, "Can you meet us here?"
"Yeah. I just gotta drop something off first." The mates gave each other questioning looks. "I'll see you guys in a bit."
As Derek put his phone away, Anabelle let out a long and exhausting exhale. "We're in for a long night, aren't we?"
"Looks like it," her best friend nodded.
She nodded as well. "Figures."
Once Scott had found them later, the three of them took off running throughout the woods to look for Boyd and Cora. They jumped and flipped over any obstacle like trees and logs, showing off their powerful moves. All of them stopped when they found more footprints in the dirt.
Hopefully they weren't too far off now.
"Is it them?" Scott asked.
"We're not the only ones that decided to stick together," Derek replied.
"Is that gonna make it harder or easier to catch them?"
"I don't know," Derek answered honestly.
Scott stood up straight. "Derek... I saw Boyd try to rip two little kids apart." Anabelle cursed to herself. This was a lot worse than they thought. "Are they gonna do that to everyone they find?"
"Everyone and everyone." The alpha pushed past Scott and his mate and started walking.
"What do we do?" the teen wolf asked the she-wolf.
She sighed as she pulled out her phone. "It looks like we gotta build ourselves an army." She dialed a number and held the phone up to her ear. "Hey, Isaac. You and Delilah feeling up to speed yet?"
Somewhere in the middle of the worlds was a couple- two young adult girls. They had a tent and a fireplace set up so they could camp there for the night. Everything was going according to plan for this night as it was the night one of the girls, Emily, would be losing her virginity. Caitlin, Emily's girlfriend, had everything set up- fake candles, lights, a romantic station on Pandora. It was perfect.
Or at least it started out to be.
While they were just about to start with their romantic evening, Emily had felt a large bug on her shoulder. Being absolutely afraid of bugs, she had run out of the tent screaming somewhere deep into the woods. Caitlin ran after her girlfriend but quickly lost her.
"Emily?" the girl called out as she searched around her, "Emily? Emily, where are you? Emily! Em?"
Getting freaked out by the darkness surrounding her, Caitlin ran back to her tent. But she still continued to yell out for her girlfriend when she got there.
"Emily, where are you? Emily!"
The sound of a bear growling made Caitlin whip her head around. But this was definitely not a bear. Instead, it was what looked to be a girl but she had pointy ears, fangs, and fur growing from her cheeks. This was a monster! And it was coming at Caitlin.
Suddenly two figures jumped out and landed in a crouch. Isaac and Delilah looked up at the other werewolf. So this must have been Cora. It was definitely not how either of them expected to meet Derek's long lost sister for the first time, but neither of them could be too surprised given what they all were. Isaac was the first to charge at Cora. Just as she went to hit him, he knocked her down. Cora roared up at him. As soon as she got up, she threw Isaac at a tree and he fell face down. Delilah came up behind the other girl and whacked the side of her head with her fist. Cora scratched her cheek and kicked the hybrid in the chest, making her fall as well.
Scott had then made his entrance, jumping over Isaac and kicking Cora to the ground. Cora growled at them, who were surrounding her along with Derek and Anabelle. The two older wolves roared at the youngest Hale and she took off running. Everyone besides Scott chased after her. He walked up to Caitlin, who flinched and took a step back. Scott raised his hands in defense, showing her that he meant no harm.
"Are you okay?" he asked her.
"What?" Caitlin replied shakily.
"Are you alright?" Scott asked again. This time Caitlin nodded in response. "You need to get out of here, okay? Get out of the woods. Get out of here as fast as you can." He then ran off to catch up with his fellow werewolves, leaving poor Caitlin in shock and wondering what the fuck was happening.
The werewolves were all now formed together somewhere in the middle of the woods. Scott had seen that he had tons of missed calls from Stiles and Natalie so he decided to finally call them back and explain to them what was going on with Boyd and Cora. Apparently Stiles and Natalie had their own disturbing news to share. Funnily enough, it also had to do with the two rabid betas. Apparently Lydia had strangely found her way to the community pool and stumbled upon a dead body, a boy about the teenagers' age. They said that his head was bashed in and that his throat was slit.
Fuck. Boyd and Cora already killed someone.
"Are you sure?" Scott asked Stiles.
"Yep," Stiles answered, everyone being able to hear him with their super hearing, "Throat ripped out, blood everywhere. It's like the frickin' shining over here. If two little twin girls come out of the woods, start asking me to play with them forever and ever, I'm not gonna be surprised."
Anabelle rolled her eyes. Why is everyone else so goddamn dramatic?
"Can you get a little closer to make sure it was them?" Scott asked.
"Make sure it was them?" Stiles repeated in disbelief, "Scott, who else is going around ripping throats out?"
"Please just do it."
They could hear Stiles and Natalie bicker for a bit before it got silent on their end. Anabelle went to bring her thumb up to her mouth to bite on it but Derek just grabbed it. She expected him to let it go but no, he kept his hold on it tight and even stroked the back of her hand with his thumb. Even though Derek should be the one about to have an anxiety attack, at least according to his thoughts, but he was pushing his own stress to comfort her for just a split second. God, Anabelle was so fucked.
After Natalie confirmed that the dead boy at the pool's throat was indeed ripped out, Scott hung up the phone and Derek let go of Anabelle's hand. Her inner wolf huffed at the loss of contact but she immediately shut it up when she realized how screwed they were when it came to Boyd and Cora.
"This doesn't make any sense," Derek said, shaking his head, "The public pool is all the way on the other side of the woods. We haven't tracked them anywhere near there."
"Derek, they killed someone," Scott reminded him.
But the alpha began to nervously ramble. "How are they moving so fast?"
"Derek."
"But they can't be that fast on foot."
"Derek!" Anabelle grabbed his hand and squeezed it. Now it was her turn to provide some comfort for her best friend. "Take a deep breath."
"They killed someone," Scott emphasized, "Some totally innocent kid is dead... And it's our fault."
A moment of silence passed. "It's my fault," Derek said.
"No, it's not," Anabelle told him softly. She spoke up. "But we need to act fast before another person ends up dead."
"We need help," Scott said.
"We have Isaac and Delilah now," Derek pointed out, nodding his head towards said teenagers.
"I mean real help."
Both the beta and hybrid looked offended. "Thanks, Scott," Delilah said sarcastically.
"They're too fast for us," Scott explained, "for all of us. They're too strong, too rabid."
"We'll catch 'em," Derek said with determination.
"And then what?" Delilah asked, "Are we even able to hold them down until the sun rises?"
Derek sighed. "Maybe it would be easier just to kill 'em."
"No, there has to be another way," Anabelle said, determined to not let another death happen tonight.
"Killing them isn't the right thing to do," Scott agreed with the pure wolf.
"What if it's the only thing to do?" Isaac asked, "If we can't even catch them, what else do we do?"
"Find someone who knows what they're doing," Scott answered.
The older werewolves looked at each other with furrowed eyebrows. God, please do not tell them that Scott was going to say what they think he was.
"Who?" Derek asked.
"Someone who knows how to hunt werewolves."
Yep. He said it. God, help them all.
She hated this plan. Anabelle hated it so much. Out of all of the plans they could have come up with they really had to resort down to this? Cornering Chris Argent in the parking lot of a supermarket and asking him for help? So stupid. And Anabelle could hear it in Derek's head that he was thinking the exact same thing. Wow, now she was turning into Derek when it came to invading personal space… nice going, Anabelle.
The best friends were sitting up front in Derek's new and bigger car, watching the whole conversation with Chris and Scott go down with Isaac and Delilah sitting in the back seat. The former hunter already had a gun pointed at Scott, aiming straight in between his eyes. Yeah, this already wasn't going well. Both of the older wolves called that.
"Do you guys think this is gonna work?" Isaac asked.
"Nope," Derek and Anabelle answered in unison.
"Me neither." Isaac kicked back in his seat and rested his head on Delilah's shoulder.
Said girl twiddled her thumbs. "So… your sister seems nice." Everyone else looked at her with raised eyebrows. Delilah cleared her throat. "Sorry. I'm just trying to make conversation to focus on not puking." They all continued to stare at her. "Hey, let's just focus on what's in front of us, shall we?" She cowered in her seat.
"There's no way he's going to agree to this," Derek sighed when he turned back around.
"Maybe we're better off if he doesn't," Anabelle said, "Just the thought of working with him makes me want him to shoot me in the head."
Derek raised an eyebrow at his mate. "I guess that calmness from the hot yoga only goes so far, doesn't it?"
"Not when it comes to them," Anabelle spat. She rested her head back against her seat. "Are you actually okay with this?"
"I mean, not particularly. But we've got nothing else, Belle. If he doesn't agree to this… I'm not sure there's anything else we can do besides kill them. And I don't think I can handle killing my own sister and my beta."
Lacing their fingers together, the she-wolf looked into Derek's eyes with as much sincerity as she could muster up. Which was a lot.
"It's not going to be like Paige. We'll get them back."
The alpha didn't say anything back. He just relished in how warm and soft her hand was compared to his rough and calloused ones. For a second, both of them forgot they weren't the only ones in the car. That was until Isaac pointed in front of them.
"Guys, look."
Scott was now following Chris to his car and when they both got in, needless to say that everyone was shocked. God damn. They couldn't believe it actually worked. But now was not the time to celebrate. So as soon as Chris's car was in gear, so was Derek's. Then he followed the hunter and Scott out of the parking lot.
They ended up driving to the local pool to check out the crime scene. It looked like the police and paramedics had already beaten them to it. The boy Stiles and Natalie had described to them earlier was lying on a gurney, ready to be taken in for an autopsy. Derek and Anabelle could see the slit on his throat and the blood all over his body. It was so gruesome. Boyd and Cora were ruthless.
"Fuck, Derek," Anabelle exhaled, "this is so bad."
"I know," her best friend agreed, "That's why whatever Chris has in mind better work."
After they left they crime scene, they followed the Argent back into the middle of the preserve. They all got out of their cars while Chris was already pulling a duffel bag out of his trunk. He dropped the bag in between himself and the half circle of werewolves standing across from him. He and Scott then bent down to get a closer look at the footprints that were still stamped on the ground.
"You're tracking them by print?" Chris asked Scott.
"Trying to," the teen wolf answered.
"Well, then, you've been wasting your time," Chris told him, "There's only one creature on earth that can visually track footprints-" he stood up, "and that's man. And if you're not trained like me, you have no idea that this print is Boyd's and these-"
"Are Cora's," Isaac finished in confidence.
"Nope. They're yours." Isaac nodded in embarrassment. "You trampled Cora's as soon as you walked over here. Listen, I know the five of you are focusing half your energy on resisting your own urges under the full moon, but that puts you at a severe disadvantage to Boyd and Cora, who have fully given in. They put the pedal to the floor where you three are barely hitting the speed limit."
Anabelle crossed her arms. "So what do we do?"
"Focus on your sense of smell," Chris instructed, "Actual wolves are known to track their prey by up to a hundred miles a day by scent. A trained hunter can use scent to track them. If the wind is with them, wolves can track a scent by a distance of two miles, which means we can draw them to us... or into a trap." He bent down to his duffel bag and started pulling out equipment. He tossed a net to Scott. "Full moon does give us one advantage." He then began tossing everyone pairs of night-vision goggles. "They'll have a higher heat signature, which makes them easier to spot with infrared."
He tossed a pair to Derek and he just inspected them in his hands. "Thanks, but I've got my own." His eyes flashed to red for a quick second. Anabelle rolled her eyes and took the goggles away from him.
"Just remember, we're not hunting wild animals. Underneath those impulses are two intelligent human beings. Don't think they can't rely on that human side. It's suppressed, but it's there, reminding them how to mask their scent, how to cover their tracks, how to survive."
Chris led the five to the edge of a cliff that looked over the town of Beacon Hills. If it were any other night, it would have been a beautiful and romantic view. Obviously this was not the right time to be romantic. Instead, all they could think about was how in danger the town was with two feral betas running around it and how they were terrorizing everyone.
"When's the last time you saw your sister?" Chris asked Derek.
"Not in years," the alpha answered in remorse, "I thought she died in the fire."
"Do you feel like you have a lock on her scent?" Derek shook his head, making Chris sigh. "Scott, how confident are you in your skills?"
"Honestly, most of the time, I'm trying not to think about all the things I can smell," Scott said.
This was going to be difficult.
"Alright," Chris said, "The problem is when they breach the woods and hit the residential area. Once they're past the high school, they're right in the middle of Beacon Hills."
"They're not gonna kill everything they see, are they?" Delilah asked nervously.
"No. But there is an important difference to recognize. Wolves hunt for food. At a certain point, they get full. But Boyd and Cora are hunting for the pleasure of the kill, for some primal apex predatory satisfaction that comes from the ripping of warm bodies to bloody shreds. And who knows when that need gets satiated?"
Delilah gulped. "That's unpleasant."
"We can't kill them," Scott persisted.
"What if we can't catch them?" Derek asked.
"Then maybe we just need to contain them," Chris said, "There's no one in the school at night, is there?"
"You want to trap them inside?" Anabelle asked. Maybe that could actually work.
"If there's somewhere with a strong enough door, no windows or access to the outside."
"What about the boiler room?" Isaac suggested, "It's just one big steel door."
Turning to Scott, Chris asked him, "You're sure the school's empty?"
"It has to be," Scott said, "There can't be anyone there this late, right?"
Little did they all know just how wrong they were.
They all headed back to Chris's car where he pulled out something that almost looked like a stake. You know, the ones that are used to kill vampires. But that was not what this was for. Chris stabbed it into the ground.
"These are ultrasonic emitters," he told them, "It's one of the tools we use to corral werewolves, pushing them into a direction we want them to run." He pushed the button on the top, turning it on, "Gives off a high-pitched frequency that only they can hear."
"God, no kidding!" Isaac exclaimed, who was covering his ears like everyone else was.
"Okay, can you turn it off now, please?" Anabelle gritted out.
Chris rolled his eyes but complied. After turning the emitter off, he started pulling more out of his briefcase that was lying in his trunk. He began to pass them out to everyone.
"These are gonna drive them to the school?" Derek asked as he took a couple.
"And then it's up to you to get them into the basement," Chris told him.
"Does anyone else want to rethink the plan where we just, uh, kill 'em?" Isaac said. Delilah smacked his arm with the emitter she was holding. "Ow."
"Stop it," she scolded her boyfriend.
"It's going to work," Scott said with his usual and sometimes unrealistic optimism. Not everyone was feeling that same enthusiasm though. "It has to."
Then they all dispersed, sticking the emitters into any open spot they could find. Derek threw one at a tree and it stuck in its trunk. Anabelle wasn't too far behind him. She threw her own emitter about twenty feet away and it landed right along a puddle. They continued to stick together as they ran through the preserve, hearing Boyd and Cora not too far behind them. Maybe the emitters were actually working. Tonight was full of surprises apparently.
Derek was sticking his last emitter into the dirt when he and Anabelle heard a voice that was like nails on a chalkboard to their ears.
"And the hunted becomes the hunter." Why was it always Peter? "You really think a few high-tech dog whistles are gonna help?"
"I don't see you offering a hand," Anabelle spat, crossing her arms as she turned around to face her best friend's uncle.
"Personally, I'm trying to cut down on futile endeavors," Peter said with that annoying smirk.
"Of course you are," Anabelle mumbled, rolling her eyes.
"Cora's alive," Derek told Peter.
"I heard," the former alpha said, "Let's throw the reunion party when she's not an unstoppable killing machine."
"We can stop her," Derek said with determination.
"Sure you can. By killing her... which happens to be the point of this little exercise. Deucalion wants you to kill them. He wants you to get rid of his baggage, making it easier for you to join his pack. The fact that it was supposed to happen in the vault, and not up here, out in the open, doesn't change his plan. It just means that Boyd and Cora are gonna kill a few innocent people first."
"And I should just let them? I should be okay with innocent people dying?"
"Unless you're okay killing your own."
But Derek wasn't about to let either happen. "We can catch them."
Peter scoffed. "Oh, come on. How much damage can they do? So they off a few homeless people, a drunk stumbling out of a bar too late. So what? Let Scott deal with it. Let him be the hero of his morally black and white world. The real survivors, you, Anabelle, and I, we live in shades of gray. Then again, even if you did kill them, you're still an alpha." He bent down and turned on the emitter, light blaring out. "You can always make more werewolves."
"You're fucking insane," Anabelle said, shaking her head.
"Maybe," Peter shrugged, "but I'm also not wrong." He then backed away and walked deeper into the forest like creepy psycho he was.
Anabelle nudged her best friend. "Don't listen to him. He's an idiot."
She started to walk away but Derek stayed put as he let the words his uncle spoke sink into his brain. Letting anyone die was not an option. Maybe a few months ago he would have been okay with killing off Jackson when he was the kanima. But now… something had been starting to change within him. It could be from letting Scott's willpower in doing the right thing get to him. Or even his growing feelings for Anabelle were softening him up. It didn't matter. What did matter was making sure everyone made it through tonight safely.
Even if that meant Derek had to sacrifice himself.
"Derek?"
Said man looked up to see his mate walking back to him. Anabelle was staring at him with concerned laced in her light brown eyes.
"Is everything alright?"
The alpha nodded. "Yeah. Everything's fine." He finally began to move. "Come on. You have one emitter left. Let's finish this off." And then they ran in the direction of the high school.
When they arrived at the school, they saw Chris finishing setting up the emitters as Scott, Isaac, and Delilah were opening all of the doors to the building so it would be easier to trap Boyd and Cora. Derek and Anabelle went inside so they could catch the betas when they run in. They didn't have too wait too much longer because the best friends soon heard the betas growling. With intensity in their eyes, Derek and Anabelle stood in the middle of the hallway.
Both of them flicked their claws out as Boyd and Cora ran to the open doors. They stopped when they saw Derek and Anabelle. But instead of running at them, the betas jumped over the building, confusing everyone.
"They're not going through the school," they heard Scott say, "They're going over it."
All six of them ran to each other outside. "The red doors," Chris said, "someone has to get them open."
"We'll get them," Anabelle nodded. She grabbed Derek's hand. "Come on." The two ran back into the building.
They found the red doors Chris had mentioned and swung them open. Growls rang through the empty halls, making Derek and Anabelle's adrenaline start pumping. Giving her best friend a look, Anabelle smiled wide.
"It's showtime."
Boyd was the first one than entered the hallway. When Cora came into view, Derek slammed her into the lockers. The bigger beta roared as he tried to come for Derek when he threw his sister onto the floor, but Anabelle swung her arm at Boyd and hit him on the head to make him trip up. Chris and Scott appeared behind Derek and Anabelle when they backed up. The betas got up and snarled at everyone on the other side of the hall. But they weren't scared. No, they were ready to end this night once and for all.
"Come and get us," Derek taunted.
He, Scott, and Anabelle ran down the other side of the hallways and Boyd and Cora chased after them. They led the betas down the steps of towards the boiler room and went inside.
It was so dark and cold in there. Even with their yellow eyes glowing like their own built in flashlights it was still hard to detect where they were going. But they just kept walking down the stairs until they found some light at the bottom. Suddenly they were being sprayed at with fire extinguishers that Scott, Derek, and Anabelle were holding, making Boyd and Cora roar as they swished the smoke away. By the time the air was already cleared, the three wolves were already bolting back up the stairs. They made it out of the room and Derek locked the door. Boyd and Cora were banging on the door on the other side, but it only lasted for a few seconds. Then it stopped.
"Did that actually just work?" Scott asked in bewilderment.
Derek looked back at Scott and Anabelle with amazement in his eyes as well. "It worked."
Chuckling breathlessly, Anabelle sat down on the floor. Holy shit! Neither of them could believe that their plan actually went through without a hitch. It was unbelievable. Almost too unbelievable. Derek sat down next to his mate who in the bliss of the moment rested her head on his shoulder. Of course he just let her and even placed his cheek on top of her head as he tried to catch his own breath.
Something wasn't right though. Scott walked towards the door and listened to what was on the other side. Anabelle noticed the change in Scott's demeanor.
"What's wrong?" she asked, "Do you hear something?"
"Heartbeats," Scott answered.
"Both of 'em?" Derek questioned, eyes closed.
"Actually... three of them."
Both Derek and Anabelle looked up at Scott before looking at each other. The she-wolf quickly got up as she listened closely as well. She focused on the scent. It was almost floral, like perfume you would by from a women's clothing store. Where had Anabelle smelled that before? The three of them stared at the door as they contemplated on what to do next because even though they couldn't tell who that third person inside the boiler room was, they knew for sure that they were human. And if Boyd and Cora found her then they were going to tear them apart.
Panic ignited in Anabelle's inner wolf when she saw Derek step up to the door and place his hands on the handle.
"What are you doing?" Scott asked him.
"Close the door behind me and keep it shut," Derek told them.
No.
"You go in there alone, and you're either gonna kill them, or they kill you," Scott pointed out."
The alpha went quiet. "That's why I'm going in alone."
This was absolutely unacceptable. If Derek either harmed Cora or Cora harmed him, neither of them would be able to forgive themselves. Anabelle couldn't let this happen. She couldn't let Derek die. Grabbing his hand, she pulled him towards him.
"Derek, this is suicide," Anabelle said, "You can't do this."
"There's someone else in there, Belle," Derek told her, "I told myself I wasn't going to let an innocent person die tonight. And I'm not going to let Boyd and Cora die either. There's nothing else we can do."
A shaky breath escaped past Anabelle's lips as she looked deep into this man's beautiful green eyes. Her hands laid on Derek's chest and he could feel the heat of them seep through his shredded shirt. Then Anabelle's eyes turned blue.
"Yes, there is."
She pushed Derek as hard as she could against the wall so he would fall on the floor. Then she opened the door and ran inside.
"Scott, lock it!" she ordered from the other side.
Not thinking twice, Scott shut the door and locked it. Derek was about to have a full on heart attack when the reality of what Anabelle was doing set in. She was sacrificing herself instead. Derek tried to push Scott out of the way but the teen wolf wouldn't let him.
"What the hell are you doing?!" Derek bellowed at him as he tried to shove Scott aside, "Get her the fuck out of there!"
"She knows what she's doing!" Scott told him, even though he hated this himself.
"No, she doesn't!" Derek pounded his fists on the door. "Anabelle! Anabelle!"
On the other side of the door, the she-wolf rushed down the stairs and kept her eyes and ears alert for any sign of the betas and/or the third person in the room. She followed the faint growls until they got closer. Finally she spotted Boyd and Cora snarling at the human who Anabelle still couldn't see. They crept closer to the person so she decided to finally take action.
She charged at them and pushed them away. When she looked at the person that was standing there, Anabelle tilted her head. "Jennifer?"
"Anabelle?" said woman gawked, just as confused. And also terrified when she saw her new friend's eyes glowing.
Boyd and Cora started to get back up so Anabelle grabbed the fenced door and shut it. "You stay hidden," she told Jennifer, "And don't. Move."
Then she went to fight off the betas.
Baring her fangs at them, Anabelle roared at the two. She ran towards Cora and knocked her off to the side. Boyd swiped at her but Anabelle pushed his chest. The she-wolf was able to get them to where she could grab them both by the throats. They both roared at her and she roared back, her blue eyes trying to hold up against Boyd's yellow ones so she could show some dominance.
But it was no use. Anabelle was no alpha. No matter what Derek said, she was still an omega. She would always be an omega. She had no power against these betas. Especially two savage ones. So when they started clawing at her, Anabelle became weaker. And she couldn't fight them off anymore. She had to just let them attack her.
Slowly, she fell to her knees and Boyd and Cora continued to try to tear her apart. Anabelle was trying to stay as strong as she could but it hurt so much. There was a strong possibility that this could kill her. If it did, she just hoped that one day Derek could forgive her. For everything. Anabelle didn't know what would happen when the sun rises, but she just continued to picture the man she couldn't get out of her heart after all these years to help anchor her through this. Even as she heard him screaming her name in fear and desperation.
"Anabelle!" Derek continued to yell, still banging on the door, "Anabelle, get out of there!"
Finally tiring himself out, he pressed his forehead against the door. His eyes were glossy and his breathing grew rapid as if he were having a panic attack. Please do not let his mate die from this. He couldn't go on without her. Literally. Derek needed her. He would rather be dead than to lose her again. But he couldn't run inside to save her. All he was able to do was wait it out and pray to God that Anabelle would survive.
"Scott!" they heard Isaac yell from upstairs, "The sun's coming up!"
Derek wasting no time in almost ripping the door open and running inside the boiler room to find his mate. Scott, Isaac, and Delilah followed after him.
When they reached the bottom of the stairs, Derek's heart dropped at the sight. Anabelle was on her knees, sweater torn up, and blood all over her. On both sides of her, Boyd and Erica were passed out, finally out of their feral state. Anabelle's heartbeat was still going strong so there was a sense of relief in everyone. But when she tried lifting her head up, they could see that she was so exhausted… so weak…
Kneeling in front of her, Derek took Anabelle's face in his hands so she could look at him. She panted heavily.
"Anabelle, that was so stupid of you," Derek scolded even though he wasn't really mad at her, "What the hell were you thinking?"
"That I really am faster than you," Anabelle joked, flinching at the pain.
"You could have died," Derek said, "I was supposed be the one in here. Why did you push me out of the way?"
Looking into his eyes, Anabelle told him, "Because I know you would have done the same thing for me."
Exhaling, Derek pulled her into him and held her tight, one of his hands going to the back of her head. Anabelle didn't have the strength to wrap her arms around him, but she did lay her head on his shoulder and almost nuzzle her nose into his neck. They breathed each other in and shut their eyes. The sparks seemed to turn into fireworks as they remained in that position for what felt like an eternity. Anabelle wanted to stay in Derek's arms forever but then she remembered that other heartbeat.
"There's a teacher," she told him, making him look down at her, "Go take care of her and make sure that she's okay."
"I'm not leaving you," Derek said, the thought of even doing so making his inner wolf whine.
"We got her, Derek," Scott promised him. Isaac and Delilah nodded.
The alpha was still adamant on staying with his mate but she gave him that look that made him bow to her every command. "Go."
"I'll come to you as soon as I can," he promised Anabelle. He stood up and turned to his betas and nodded towards Boyd and Cora. "Get them out of here." And then he looked at Scott. "Take care of her."
"I will," Scott told him.
Then Derek went to go find Jennifer while Isaac took Boyd and Delilah took Cora. Scott helped Anabelle stand, apologizing every time she winced. He wrapped her arm around his shoulders and he kept one hand on her waist to stabilize her.
As they started to walk out of the room, a strong scent hit Anabelle. It was coming from Jennifer, which was very odd. What Anabelle got from her was fear, confusion, relief, and… attraction? Smitten? Worst of all… lust. Derek must have found her. And it was very clear that Jennifer was liking what she was seeing. It made something bubble up inside Anabelle. Something that she did not like at all. She lifted up her head as her eyes flashed blue and her inner wolf growled at the thought of another woman gaining Derek's attention. One one word blared in Anabelle's head-
"Mine."
