"The thing about the captain," Dr. Crusher said as she drank coffee in her office with Counselor Troi, "is that he lives in the past."
"And what do you mean by that?" Troi asked.
"Exactly what I said," Crusher replied, a little exasperated. "He spends so much time thinking about things he regrets, it's a wonder he can focus on anything in the present!"
"Don't you think you're being a bit harsh, Beverly?"
Dr. Crusher sighed. "Maybe," she admitted. "It's just frustrating sometimes. Actually," she said, hestitating, "I've gotten an offer from Starfleet Medical to be the chief medical officer at headquarters."
"Really?" Troi asked. "Congratulations!"
"Thank you. Don't tell anyone – I haven't made a decision yet."
"Don't worry, I won't," Troi reassured her. "Just make sure you don't let your tension with the captain affect your decision."
Dr. Crusher smiled for the first time in their conversation. "I'll keep that in mind."
