So here is the story !
Chapter 6 : First Step
After dinner, three members of Team Meza were notified by their captain to meet up in the morning at Mission Center. Three of them separated and went to their respective stay, get a rest, with a though to expected whatever waiting for them tomorrow.
Morning dawned with another Blackburn roar through the entire base, waking up the personnels and animals alike. Kuvira rubbed her eyes and yawned before suddenly remember yesterday reminder. Gather at Mission Center? I wonder what is that all about. Kuvira though stopped as she slided the cover, sat up, stand and then walked to the bathroom as she looked at the clock. It read 6 o'clock. Two hours before the appointment. she step in and undressed, turn on the hot water, and enjoying the water sprouted from the shower. She stepped out of the bathroom to the wardrobe and choose her combat armor. She dressed and decided take a breakfast. Today's menu : fried duck with a lasagna sausage.
"Still have time to read the manual,"
After breakfast, Kuvira walked to the book shelf and read the manual. Several minutes she try to turn on a thing called Television in the living room. It looked like a movers to Kuvira's opinion. She switched button by button as the screen changed until she come to a channel, if she read correctly, which showed Suyin Beifong accompanied by her family in a interview press.
"Mrs. Beifong, how do you think about Kuvira's trial in the following weeks?"
"It will continue as it should be, Kuvira has hurt all of us, Earth Kingdom, Zaofu, even the family that has raised and protected her up to this point. She will face justice!"
Su Yin then walked away from the camera, but even Kuvira can saw a single tear escape Su's cheek as well her own. She sighed in defeat to think a long way to earned her beloved and precious people forgiveness. She turned off the television and left the house.
Walking through the square as more to become a daily habit to Kuvira. Now she felt she has created a bond with this place, not only the inhabitants is more hospitable, at least they don't give you a glare for something she doing in the past. Yes, there are still several people, mostly benders, especially earthbenders still wary to be close to her. Not that she blame them, she was the one to created the mess at the first place.
She shook her head from the depressing though. Now here she is. In a new different place which she choose for her redemption. To fixed her mistakes during those chaotic three years and she will doing it goddamn right!
"...vira?". She felt a tap on the shoulder as she looked at Kiala who raised an eyebrow.
"Are you feeling well?"
"I'm fine, just thinking a bit,"
"Want to talk about it?"
She ignore Kiala's question as she strode off towards the street. Kiala confused then pouted then catched up with her as both of them walked to the Mission Center. Nilo came to their sight.
"Hey Kuvira, how are you?" Nilo asked.
"Much better now, thank you," Kuvira answered.
"Padawan Nilo, nice to meet you here," Kiala enter the conversation.
"Yes, nice to meet you too," she said then. She looked at her watch, "sorry, but I need to go somewhere, see you later!" she said then left the two benders. They walked again in silence until entering Control Center, turned left to a door said Mission Center on top of it. The door slides and they saw tables containing missions file alongside mission hologram with several tables filled with other briefing teams. However they only focused on one table. That table consisted of Grand Lotus Daizan, Commander Vort, Meza, and Mole who seemed to be waiting for them. They approached the table as Meza looked up making three others looked up following Meza's sight.
"Good you are here," Daizan said as Kuvira and Kiala bowed.
"Good, now let's begin. Meza you may begin the briefing" Vort said gesturing to Meza to speak.
"Thank you, sir," Meza said. He typed a button as a hologram of map appeared on the screen. "There is a gang of bandit terrorize several villages in southern Earth Kingdom. These bandit led by an Earthbender named Shar Long. Their last known location was at Tu Zin, an abandoned village in the southern Eart Kingdom, near Xishaan Mountains."
"Strength ?" Kuvira asked.
"About 10 to 20 men. Several earthbenders. Using melee weapons and riding ostrich, any other questions?"
"Rules of engagement?" Mole asked. This time, Vort is the one who answered.
"Incapacitated them, if you can. Then, contact us for extraction,". Kuvira felt something was up with the commander's tone.
"Another questions?" Meza asked but no reply. "Alright, we move in 1 hour, gather again in the front gate, standard mission gear, understood?"
"Yes, sir!" exclaimed both Mole and Kiala while Kuvira stay silent. Then she spoke.
"What is the standard mission gear?"
The other occupants dumbstruck. The realization hit them.
"Right,...uhm, Kiala will show you," Meza said a bit unsure. Kiala then nodded with a smile, glad to help her friend in need.
"Alright, dismissed!" Meza said as Team Meza left the room.
"So, what is the standard mission gear?" Kuvira asked as they left the Command Center.
"It was a standard gear using for missions, consisted of 3 days ration, tool kit, medical kit, and weaponry," Kiala answered.
"Where I can get all of that?"
"You have it already,". Kiala shrugged.
"Sorry?"
"It is in your stay,"
"Oh, right. Thank you, see you an hour later". Then she parted way with Kiala.
She bolted to her bungalow, entered her bedroom, opened the wardrobe and scanned it. But cannot find it. She cursed herself for not asked it earlier. Where is it possibly be? Right! Storage! She went to the storage in the basement and scanned the room. It was a decent room, more like a workshop or office room. A place for experiment. And there are 4 bags on a shelf hanging on the wall, arranged from the smallest to the largest. The smallest one have a label on it. Mission Gear.
"There you are," she opened it and reviewed the contents, she also found a manual for it. It seems that after every missions or operations, the bag must be sent to supply depot to resupply. As she looked at her bag and contents, it all still fresh and new.
An hour has passed as Kuvira arrived at the front gate. An earth all. Kiala and Mole was there first with bag at their back and soon they talked to each other. Meza arrived not to long.
"Alright, let's move out, team," He exclaimed. They exit as three earthbenders guards bend the earth wall to opened a little on the bottom of the gate. outside the gate, Meza gestured them to followed him until they reach an area full of animals.
"Fena!" Mole shouted as one of several people there looked to Team Meza. Riding a bison, she beamed and ride towards them.
"Long time no see, fellas!" She wave her hand. She has a short black hair and blue eyes. "what do you need of me?"
"Four fox antelopes," Meza said.
"Mission?" Fena asked. Meza nod in confirmation. She then talked to a communication device attached to her arm.
"I need four fox antelopes now,"
"Wait, what?!" Kuvira asked surprised a little.
"It's fine, if you know how to ride. You do know how to ride, right?" Mole asked her as Kuvira looked away in embarassment, anywhere but her team.
"Okay, follow me," Fena said gesturing them to followed her as they walked in silence. "where to go?"
"Tu Zin, bandit elimination,"
"Right, here we are!" she gestured them as several keepers walked to them as four fox antelopes followed them.
"This is the antelope, keep them save, please," she said.
"We will, thank you," Meza said as they mounted their rides. Meza turned to Kuvira, "You know how to ride, right?" He asked second time.
"The last time I ride was 10 years ago," She muttered to herself but still heard by them.
"It's fine, they are tame and friendly enough, give them a little pet on the neck,". Kuvira do it and it purred.
"Good, nothing to worry about, let's go!". Off they go to do their umpteenth times mission, first time with Kuvira, and Kuvira's first time to step to the outside world since joining the Alliance.
Riding a fox antelope for the first time is not a pleasant experience. Wind hit your face sharply not something you wanted during a journey. And they ran very quick. After several minutes in a blurred vision, they slowed down to jogging level.
"We almost there," Meza said from the front.
"Is every mission always ride animals?" Kuvira asked. Mole is the one who answered.
"Yes and no, you see, if the mission only involved the members of the team and not bringing more additional passengers, yes they ride animals, not to increased suspicious, if you know what I mean," he said nudging Kuvira's arm.
"And no, but sometimes yes, though we use larger animals for the ride." Kiala continued.
"What animals do you use for missions, besides fox antelope?" Kuvira asked again, her curious part take over.
"Bison, buffalo yak, polar bear dog, komodo rhino, ostrich horse, saber-tooth moose, shirshu. We also use predators for hunting, like wolf, snow-leopard carribou, and tigerdillo. We also use flying bison and dragons," Meza finished.
"I think flying bison only used by airbenders. And how you manage to get dragons?"
"The Alliance have more than enough resource to bring them out from extinction, they found two eggs with different sex on one of Fire Nation islands 3 years ago, they took it and breed them here. Now we have 20 of them on Sanctuary."
"If you want to, we can go to Conservation Park after this," Kiala offered as Mole nodded in agreement. Then Meza abruptly stopped with his hand hold up, indicating his team to stop too. And they stop.
"Alright we're here, be quite and stay sharp people," Meza commanded as he held out his hand, a gesture to stop. They realized they arrived at a cliff facing an abandoned village. Tu Zin. They mounted off their ride and walked to the edge of the cliff. Meza pulled out a binocular scope and saw through it.
"15 bandits, including several earthbenders, ostrichs, yep, the intel was right," Meza said as he turned to his team. "Alright, leave the antelopes here, tied them up,". They do as he said then gathered around Meza again.
"Let's move," he said. They have several distance between the village and their current position. After several minutes of walk, they were at the edge of the village. "activate your com," he said as he turned of the comm in his armguard as the rest of the team followed his gesture. "check, Fire here?"
"Check, Water here," Kiala said as they also heard her voice in from the comm.
"Earth is good," Mole spoke later. Kuvira looked confused between them. Meza only need to asked.
"What is it?" getting a bit irritated, Kuvira sighing in exasperation.
"What is my call sign? Earth-2?" She asked deadpanned. Meza sweatdropped as he remembered his newbie in the team.
"Right, your call sign will be..." he trailed off as he looked around, "...Sand,".
"Okay," she whispered looking down. Yeah, not the best call sign.
"One more, thing. Do you okay with killing?" He asked Kuvira as he knew both his teammate have already killed before. Kuvira hesitantly nodded.
"Good, now the plan : we circle them, incapacitated or kill them if you have to. I go south, Kiala west, Mole east, and Kuvira north. I want clean sweep. Most of them gathered at the center of the village. So take the guard on the edges first, and wait for my signal to attack, understood?" all of them nodded.
"This is simple elimination mission, people, move out!" He ordered mutterly, but they can heard it clearly from their comm.
Kuvira moved to one of the wall from their first position. She move quitely in every step and watch her surrounding as well sensed anyone from 10 meters distance through her seismic sensing. Even though that was a village, they still separated quite far from each other. Kuvira sensed her first target as she pushed herself to the wall on the right. Male from his heartbeat and walk. Her target approaching from the other side of the wall as she could felt his every step. Getting closer and closer, he passed the wall Kuvira leaned in as Kuvira crouched and hold her breath.
She sent three metal strips at once, aimed to his eyes, mouth, and left arm. The eyes and mouth getting shut as the strips circled and pressed the organ, making him blind and mute as she metalbend the strips on the left arm as it crossed with his right arm, handcuffing it in the process, alongside also hold his legs with strips. She knocked the wind out of him, hold his not to make any sound, sat and leaned him quietly to the wall.
She do the same thing to another one after she moved again, closer to the square. She stayed in the shadow of the building and wait for a moment to make sure there is no one on the alley or narrow street. It seems there is nobody else. The comm cracked.
"How many did you get? Fire get 2,"
"Sand got 2, now ready and waiting,". She heard a crack again, then a voice.
"1 by Water and standing by,"
"2 by Earth and now in position,"
"This is Fire, hold your position,". From his position Meza could saw the bandits talking and laughing to each other around their stolen treasure who didn't aware of the impending doom.
"Picked your closest target, we will surprise them," he got reply of "roger" and "copy that" from the comm."On my mark, 3, 2, 1, ...Go!"
And with that, the chaos break, each of Meza Team their respective target, knocking them out as the bandits surprised by the sudden attack. It such a coincidence that the remaining bandits were benders as they make their stance. Meza team jumped out of the shadow with their elements attack. The bandits jumped out of the way as one of them get hit and fell dead.
Now, it four against four, Meza fight the tallest one as it was their leader. The rest of the team fight their respective opponents. Kuvira sent a spike of earth to her opponent as he spun and redirect her attack back to her. She split the spike with sword she formed from her armguard. She run to him as he sent rocks and dirts to her, but Kuvira is resilient as she dodge or split his every attack. She jumped as she sent a metal strip which go straight through his heart, killing him instantly.
She looked to her teammates as Mole still fighting but getting upper hand as well as Kiala. She looked at Meza. Meza is in not getting upper fight as he get kicked by the leader. She rushed in to help her captain.
"It seems you not so tough, huh? Punk ass firebreather," as he turned around from the downed firebender, he felt a massive rock hit his chest, pushing him backward. But he looked back, Meza stand up again and send to massive flame to him, colliding the flames with the leader as the rock break. He fell as he started to lose consciousness, he saw the one who send the rock. Her? But I though- And he passed out.
"That was the last of them," Kuvira said. Mole joined Kuvira as well Kiala. As she saw Meza, she quickly went to his side to aid his injures.
"You're reckless you know that?" Kiala sighed. "how you get overwhelmed?"
"Well, he hold my foot as I lost my balance," He said averted Kiala's gaze to him.
"Thankfully only several bruises and cuts," She said as water cover his bruises and cuts. "you need to thank her, you know,". Meza looked at Kiala then to Kuvira who gathered the nearby bandit in circle. He sighed as he would do something he doesn't even though will happened.
"Kuvira," he said as he walked to her supported by Kiala.
"Yes?" She looked at Meza.
"Thank you earlier...for the knock out,"
"No problem, you are my teammate right? Teammate covered each others back," she smirked quoting her captain words.
"You're right– " before he can continued, Mole ran up to them and give a massive hug to the four of them.
"Group hug, Team Meza!" he even lifted them.
"Put me down! It stil hurts!" Meza shouted to his ear as Kiala giggled and Kuvira cannot contained small smile appeared at her face. This is her team, yes. Mole realized it and put them down.
"Hehe, sorry, got carried away," he said nervously rubbing his back. Meza nodded. Then he turned on his comm.
"Centerpoint, This is Origin-6, mission completed, need extraction for package, over,"
"This is Centerpoint. Copy that Origin-6, 3 birds is on the way to your position right now, ETA 15 minutes, over".
"Understood, Centerpoint, Origin-6 out!" Meza replied as he turned off the comm. He then looked at Kuvira who stared at him. "what?"
"Origin-6?"
He need to explained it to her.
"Origin-6 is our team call sign, Centerpoint is–"
"The command center?" Meza nodded.
"the birds?"
"The ship, gunships to be exact. There are different names for differents ships," Meza stated.
Before the conversation can went on, they heard buzzing sound of 3 LAAT gunships coming into view as they landed, circling the unconscious bandits and Team Meza. The captain, indicated by pauldron on his shoulder step out of the ship as well troopers poured out from the ships. Meza approached the captain. The captain opened a hologram displaying Grand Lotus Daizan.
"Good job, Meza, Captain Trench here will clean your work, you and your team deserved a little rest or vacation for this. But I want full report immediately from you,"
"Yes, Grand Lotus," Meza bowed. Then transmission ended as Meza looked at the captain.
"2 dead, rest unconscious, there are several bandits in the edge of the town too. I want everything here secured and examined,"
"Right away," the captain nodded, "move out!" he exclaimed to his trooper as they start put them to the ships as several troopers scattered to get another bandits. The medic checked the team condition and confirming they're fine.
"We will head back to our ride, captain. Interrogate them once you arrive at the Sanctuary,"
"Understood, sir. We will take care of the rest,"
"Good," and they left village heading to their ride. They arrived and mounted it and start riding to the Sanctuary.
"We get a rest for several days," Meza said.
"Thank spirit," Kuvira sighed in relief, It had been a exhausting day indeed.
"Yes!" Mole exclaimed enthusiastically.
"It seems we can get that trip to Conservation Park," Kiala said to Kuvira as Kuvira nodded.
"I can't wait," Kuvira looked up at the sunset as four benders walked together side by side.
This is her new life as she waited for more adventures and journey up ahead.
