Finally, here's chapter 5. Happy Halloween, thanks for reading. Reviews appreciated.
The agent was transported to the nearest hospital via ambulance. Pure insanity, with most resembling chickens with their heads cut off. Greg was wavering in and out of consciousness. He heard the muffled voices of the EMS staff huddled over him, the pang of fear in his team members' voices. Suddenly, a bright light seemingly ten times brighter than the sun, assaulted his eyes. They were now rushing down Toronto General's immense corridor.
"Is he gonna be okay?"
Came Jules' tensed voice, directed towards Ed. The team trail Parker's gurney until they reach the Emergency room doors.
"Sorry, no non-medical personal beyond this point"
Came a brisk directive from one of the hospital nurses. The sniper breathes a heavy sigh and momentarily leans against the wall nearest him. The corner of his mouth, threatening with what looked to be a half smile and suppressed chuckle.
"It'd take a lot more than some amateur with a peashooter to take Greg down"
Thankfully his attacker was apprehended a short time later. But it was what was said next that scared the absolute shit out of him. The medical staff feverishly exchanging a course of action, and the first proposed was to get him in immediately for a CT scan to check for any possible internal injuries . Said scan would harm his unborn child. He had to speak up, but found he was incapable of an otherwise simple task. Feeling his heart nearly pound out of his chest with anxiety.
Just before he was to be wheeled into radiology. Thankfully, a young nurse approached the group and suggested an ultrasound instead. The hospital actually suffered a malpractice suit filed against them 8 years prior for taking a pregnant man into X-ray and it subsequently doing harm onto his unborn baby. The settlement was a jaw-dropping 20 mil. but the damage had already been done.
Feeling like a science experiment with his arms attached to IVs and tubes. He could now breathe easier knowing he wasn't going to be taken for a deadly CT scan. However, this hadn't completely mitigated his fears. If anything happened to his baby, he knew he'd never be able to cope. Since Greg first set eyes on those instant, life-altering pink lines. He had taken to occasionally affectionately refer the little one as Baby Girl.
The team quickly rush him in for the examination. It was when the tech went to lift up his shirt, catching a glance of the small swell of his abdomen, did Greg actually audibly hear what sounded like a sharp gasp. It was then for a split second, the chaos stopped. As the others tried to ascertain her reasons for such a bizarre reaction.
"He..he's pregnant"
It was with this revelation, the staff was even more diligent monitoring his IV drips. A mix of fluids and pain management, the latter was removed upon a scan with the transducer. Everyone on baited breath, Greg still unable to say a word, simply listen as he left his and his daughter's lives in their hands.
Exhausted eyes watch the technician as she closely examined every area. No internal injuries as far as they could make out, but.. what about his baby girl? Had the kick to his stomach bring her a lifetime of burden?
He could feel hot tears welling beneath the surface, slowly breaking and sliding down his cheek. Though this went virtually unnoticed by the staff as the tears seemingly dissipated into nothingness shortly thereafter. Another minute of very careful examination ticks by, before the technician could finally exhale her anxiously held breath.
"It looks as though father and baby are doing just fine...but he may want to take it easy for the next few days. The immense pain is likely stemmed from bruising sustained in the attack"
He could hardly believe his ears, after such an emotional and mental roller coaster, his precious baby girl was going to be just fine. Up until this point he had went to a very private facility to monitor the pregnancy. It catered to agents like himself in high risk occupations whom wish to seek out anonymity right up until their due dates. This, however, didn't offer him such luxury. His condition was going to be relayed to the others, Greg could practically already feel his ears burning.
The agent felt himself being transported yet again, this time to the recovery wing to rest. His mouth still failing him on being able to utter anything at all. Perhaps this was all a dream? Yet again, all he could do was watch as a mass of blue scrubs trickle out. Their occupation made them privy to certain luxuries, as they were. Not offered to ordinary Canadian citizens. This included a limit of up to 3 people allowed in whilst he was in recovery.
He could hear slightly muffled exchanges between Ed, Jules, and Sam as they slowly entered the immaculate room. The sound of Ed's distinct rough chuckle, followed by Jules shushing him not to wake Parker. Sam, meanwhile, simply gave a small smile and monitored the doorway, just in case. Ed being Ed, simply could not help himself, having some lighthearted fun with his injured superior.
"A little birdie told me someone was expecting.. an' no, we're not goin' out 'an buyin' baby's first sniper rifle"
