"Guinan," Data asked the bartender one evening in Ten-Forward after their excursion in the holodeck with the comic, "do you think I will ever understand humor?" He paused before adding, "I wonder if it is worth the effort or whether the capability is outside of my programming altogether."
Guinan smiled. "What a loaded question, Data. Personally, I think it's worth your pursuit."
"Why?"
"Because even the desire to understand something like humor is part of your personality. It's part of who you are as a person, and I'd hate to see you give up on something just because you think it might be impossible."
"But I am not truly a person; I am an android."
The bartender gave a knowing smile. "Of course you're a person. You experience life just like the rest of us, don't you? Just because it's different than most people perceive doesn't invalidate it."
Data nodded. "Thank you, Guinan."
