"I am curious, Commander," Data asked Riker one evening in Ten Forward, "were you afraid, believing that your death was imminent?"
"Oh, Rikers are never afraid," the commander said, grinning, before changing his tone. "I thought that I would be afraid, but I was mostly... just sad. Not because I have any grand goals that I want to achieve in my life, I just want to live more of it. And it felt unfair that all of that could be cut short on me without my consent."
"Ah," Data said, nodding. "So you were sad not because your death was close at hand, but because the potential of life not yet experienced."
"I guess that's about right."
"Intriguing. Though I may not ever experience death myself, learning about how humans face it fascinates me."
The commander smiled slightly. Data's curiosity was one of Riker's favorite things about him. "I'm sure it does, Data."
