"Something on your mind, Captain?" Guinan said, approaching Picard at the bar in Ten Forward.
"Oh, always," Picard replied.
Guinan smiled wryly. "I mean, more than usual."
The captain relayed the story of the Rana IV colony, and of Kevin and Rishon. Once he was finished telling her about it, he sighed.
"You think I might have some insight on the matter, being so long-lived myself?" Guinan asked.
Picard shrugged. "I suppose so. It's such a discouraging situation!" he said, letting out a bit of his frustration.
"Well, if you ask me," Guinan said, "he already chose his punishment. When you live as long as he will, exile is the worst sentence imaginable." She watched for Picard's reaction, and added, "I'm only speaking a little from experience."
"Hmm," Picard said. "I just find myself wishing it had all happened differently. But you know what they say – 'if wishes were horses...'"
"You'd have a whole stable of them, wouldn't you?" Guinan replied lightly.
"Exactly."
