Chapter 3: Alone Together
"Its my fault." Santana says as she follows Brittany to the locker room. Where nothing has changed about her locker
"No. I was on probation for fighting in middle school." Brittany opens her gym locker and starts to change. Santana turns to give her privacy.
"You can look at me. I have nothing to hide." Brittany says, and Santana turns around. Brittany's stomach and ribs have old scars scattered.
"But you said-" Santana counts the scars and a whimper rumbles in her throat.
"Because I know." Brittany says, pulling on a black t-shirt, a leather jacket and skinny ripped jeans.
"So does this mean we can't be friends?" Santana really liked the blonde, she didn't want it to end.
"This means we have to be." Brittany sighs "Walk me back to the coaches office?" Santana nods and hangs her head as her and Brittany walk back toward the coaches office.
"I'm really sorry Pierce." Sue says as she takes Brittanys uniform. Santana stands silently in the doorway when Sue motions for her to enter and close the door.
"Sit." she addresses to the two girls "Anytime you have trouble, come to me. I'll do something. I know my cheerios are sometimes the criminals, but as you can see I don't tolerate fighting or bullying." Sue looks at Brittany "Join the Glee club. They need your moves. And bring your little friend what's her?"
"Santana Lopez ma'am. Beg your pardon but what is Glee?" She looks at Brittany, who seems excited at the prospect.
"Its a show choir group. The New Directions. They perform popular songs."
"I'm in." Santana says "I love to sing." she looks at Brittany.
"Yeah, of course. If I'm going to be at the bottom of the totem, might as well have a support system." She smiles.
"Don't worry. I haven't been trying to actively destroy the glee club anymore. You'll love it. Now, go to class, and avoid slushies."
Brittany and Santana walk quietly to their lockers as the bell signaling the end of lunch rings and the halls start to fill.
"Will you come to my house after school?" Brittany pleads more than asks.
"Don't we have Glee?" Santana arches an eyebrow.
"Afterwards. Please?" The blonde seems desperate so Santana agrees, texting her aunt that she won't be home.
At the end of the day, Brittany leads Santana to the choir room and they wait outside for their turn to audition.
"Are you sure we should go together we haven't ever performed with each other." Santana chews nervously on her lip.
"We both know the song. Just follow my lead with the dance, sing as you would usually and I'll harmonize. Don't worry." Brittany assures. Santana nods and takes a deep breath as they are ushered in for their turn.
"Hello ladies. I'm Will Scheuster and this is Rachel, current captain of the Glee club. What will you be performing today?"
"Alone Together by Fall Out Boy" Santana says and Brittany adds "with a dance."
"Alright, show us what you got."
I don't know where you're going but do you have room for one more troubled soul
I don't know where I'm going but I don't think I'm coming home
As they sing, Brittany moves Santana through a graceful hip-hop duet
Say yeah let be alone together
We could stay young forever
They spin and jump and twist their way through the rest of the song.
This is the road to ruin and we're starting at the end.
Mr.Schue and Rachel clap and say that the girls should definitely come back tomorrow, because they will be valuable assets to the team. Both girls beam and skip their way out of the school to walk to Brittany's house, where they will finally get to know each other by being alone together.
"Welcome" Brittany flings open the door to her house
"Shoes?" Santana nervously shifts in the doorway, trying to be extra polite. Brittany shakes her head and leads the girl up to her room. She takes Santana's bag and sets it next to hers by the door. The raven haired girl stands nervously, taking in the room. Despite being painted baby blue, the room is covered in posters reminiscent of some of Santana's favorite bands. Brittany runs out to get them a snack and Santana goes to look through the girls CDs, at least 100 on a rack on her desk. She has everything from All Time Low to Taylor Swift to Journey.
"Whatya lookin at?" Brittany says, setting the carrots and hummus on her desk. Santana jumps away and shrugs. "Relax. It's fine. Take off your shoes. Sit down."
"S..sorry, I've never really hung out at someone's house before." Santana kneels down to untie her shoes before setting them neatly by her bag.
"Never? No sleepovers in elementary school or middle school parties?" Brittany gapes as Santana shakes her head.
"I told you I don't do friends." she mumbles, sitting cross-legged at the foot of the blondes bed. Brittany joins her, pulling on a loose thread.
"You never told me why though. Why don't you do friends?" Brittany raises an eyebrow.
"Because everyone I made friends either left or they didn't like me because of my music or because I was gay." Santana looks down, her hair covering her face.
"Is that why?" Brittany glances at the girls wrists and receives a small nod."Me too. Except people thought I was stupid- and they were right." Brittany shakes her head sadly.
"What do you mean? You seem super smart." Santana looks up through her hair.
"I work really hard to get good grades, but I was always more unconventional. I could do things easily, but thinking wasn't easy." the blonde explains "I just never understood anything they taught in class."
"So you adapted?" Santana plays with her hands idly.
"I got help. A tutor." Brittany says simply.
"I like you."Santana says after they sit in a silence for a moment.
"I know. You were playing hard to get too well. I like you too." Brittany admits shyly "Thats why I wanted you to come home with me."
"I'm not really ready…" Santana assumes that Brittany wants more than she can give in good conscience.
"No! I mean, well, not that. I kind of, was hoping, I could maybe, I don't know. Kiss you?" Brittany rubs her neck and smiles lightly at the Latina.
"O...okay." Santana stutters, scooting closer.
"Really?" Brittany smiles huge and Santana nods, trying to hide her first kiss jitters. Brittany quickly leans forward and pressed a chaste kiss to the Latinas lips. When Santana pouts after she stops, she pulls her into a deeper kiss. Santana's world spins and she kisses back tentatively. Brittany pulls away with a satisfied smile while Santana, despite her caramel skin tone, turns pink.
"That was my first kiss," Santana smiles "I'm glad it was with you."
"Wait really?" Brittany is once again blown away by the girl's uneventful life.
"Yeah. I was hoping, maybe, you'll teach me to kiss so one day I can be the initiator?" Santana rushes out. Brittany giggles and nods. Before long, Santana has to head home, briefly meeting the Pierces on her way out the door. Her aunt smiles when she climbs in the car, and Santana can't help the smile that covers her face as she finally feels human.
