Chapter 10

Thursday

Arizona's POV

Arizona woke the next morning to the sound of her phone ringing. She rolled over to silence the obnoxious ringing when she realized who was calling 'Mama'. She assumed her mother was calling about the incident the day before. Teddy had already warned her this was going to be a big story. She pressed the green button and prepared herself for her mother's interrogation.

"Good Morning Mama" she croaked out through her sleepy voice.

"Don't you good morning Mama me Arizona Robbins!" Yup. Just as she suspected. Her mother had heard.

"Mama, are you really calling me at…6 in the morning?! To yell at me?" She still had 2 more hours to sleep if she really wanted to. This was not the way she wanted to start the day.

"Arizona. If you think I am not going to call you after I see on ESPN that you jumped into a pool and saved a little girl. You clearly don't know me at all. I am calling to make sure you are okay!"

"Mama, I am okay and more importantly so is the little girl. I am sorry if I scared you." She knew how her mother tended to think the worst.

Her mother kept her on the phone for the next 45 minutes and explained, in detail, how her father had finally been able to clear their driveway. Arizona had told her mother the full story of the pool incident and her mom had only cried twice. After telling her she was proud of her about 13 times and informing her of their plans to be at The Calliope on Monday morning – she finally hung up.

The fact Arizona was awake at 6:45 on one of the few days she did not have to be up early was annoying. With that in mind, she knew she would not be able to go back to sleep. After a shower and returning the 30 text messages from various people about yesterdays incident, she headed to the elevator. She needed coffee…immediately.

When she walked into the lobby, she was pleasantly surprised to see it pretty empty for 7:30 in the morning. As she was walking by the front desk, the flirty red head from the other night flagged her over.

"Excuse me, Ms. Robbins. Mr. Torres asked me to give this package to you." She handed her a rather large bag over the counter. As she was grabbing the bag, she managed to knock over the stack of newspapers that were available for guests to take for free. 'Who the heck still read newspapers.'

As she went to pick up the papers, the red head front desk worker came around to help. When she saw the front cover, she froze. "Golf's Golden Girl Saves Child from Drowning!" Because the press was the press, the photo collage on the front included a photo of Sofia sitting up with Arizona's hand on her back, the paramedics in the background, and finally a photo of Calliope hugging her. While she knew the photo was innocent, because Arizona was falling back when Callie hugged her – it looked a bit more suggestive than should be in a story about a little girl drowning.

The red head's comment shook her out of her daze. "You and Ms. Torres look cozy there." There was clearly some jealously laced in her voice.

Arizona just rolled her eyes. "Well she was thanking me for pulling her daughter out of the pool. That is all. Not that it is anyone's business. This photo should not even be with this story." Arizona knew this was going to spiral. Why can't media members just report and not try to make something out of nothing?

"Well, if it is nothing maybe we can get together for drinks sometime?" The red head made sure to brush Arizona's hand as she took the newspapers. Normally, Arizona would agree. But the whole situation just felt wrong.

"Um, thank you. I am flattered. But I am just here to play some golf. Maybe some other time." With that, Arizona grabbed the bag and gave the red head a quick goodbye. She really needed some coffee.

Walking into the café she had heard her before she saw her. She was laughing at something and as she said many times, her laugh was her new favorite sound. When she saw Callie, she was holding Sofia's hand and talking with the barista who was working behind the counter. Arizona just stood back and watched for a few moments. No matter who Callie was talking to she always made sure that she was giving them her undivided attention. It was one of the many things she noticed about the striking brunette. When the barista turned and walked away, Arizona took her chance.

"Good morning Calliope, Sofia. How are you both feeling this morning?"

Arizona was met with the biggest most beautiful smile she had ever seen. Callie opened her mouth to respond but was quickly cut off by the shriek of the young girl. "ARIZONAA! Mommy told me you saved me from the water. I colored you this picture and made you this bracelet!" Sofia sprinted towards Arizona and before she had time to react the young girl was wrapped around her legs.

Arizona crouched down to get on Sofia's level. "Oh, my goodness Sofia! This is the most beautiful bracelet and picture I have ever seen. Thank you so much. I am just so glad you are okay." Sofia wrapped her arms around Arizona's neck and Arizona couldn't help but melt into the hug. She was so grateful that Sofia was okay. Not only physically, but it seemed like emotionally too.

Arizona stood up and Sofia grabbed her hand. They walked towards Callie hand in hand Arizona's smile matched Callie's as they approached.

"I see that you have formally met Sofia." Callie just chuckled.

"Oh yeah, we are best friends now. You know, special bond and all." Arizona joked.

"Well, I hate to interfere with your best friend time, but Sofia has to get up see her Abuelo. He has been calling nonstop since yesterday."

"Oh, um. I was going to see if maybe you wanted to grab a coffee." Arizona didn't think she would see Callie that day, but now that she had she didn't want her to go.

"I would love to. Let me just take Sof upstairs and then I can meet you back down here. There is a fresh batch of brownies currently in the oven for you." Callie said with a wink that made Arizona's legs turn to Jell-O.

"Well then I am not going anywhere until I try one. I am going to grab a table and return a few calls. I will see you when you get back down here."

Arizona turned to the counter and ordered her coffee. After she paid, she turned around and couldn't help but watch Callie walk away. 'Those legs are my new favorite thing' she thought to herself.

Arizona settled into a booth in the back of the café and started responding to the countless emails she had from the press and her family. She sat back and sighed. She was more than ready to just start playing golf at this point. After responding to the 12th email, Arizona looked down at the picture that Sofia had drew for her. It was the two of them, with a tall figure that looked to be Callie, out by the pool smiling and having a good time. She didn't know why the idea of that made her smile so big, but who was she to question it. The bracelet was a classic string bracelet, but it was braided beautifully. Arizona tied it to her wrist and went back to waiting for Callie.

Callie's POV

Seeing Arizona in the café was not how Callie had expected her Thursday to start. But she would be lying if she said it hadn't made her morning better than it would have been. Watching Arizona joke with Sofia gave Callie butterflies. She had explained to Sofia early this morning what happened yesterday and who Arizona was. Sofia had immediately insisted she draw her a picture and make her a bracelet. Considering the fact Sofia woke up at 5am that was something that could occupy her while they got ready for the day.

Callie had planned to just have the picture and brownies sent up to Arizona's room. She was much happier with how the delivery played out. Now they were headed up to the 14th floor and Callie just knew her father was going to be all over them as soon as they arrived.

The elevator hadn't even opened all the way when she heard her father's voice.

"SOFIA, nieta, I am so glad you are okay." Her father grabbed Sofia into his arms and held her in a way Callie had never seen before.

"Abuelo, I am okay. Arizona saved me. We are best friends now!" Sofia truly believed that her and Arizona were now best friends. It was actually cute.

"I knew that Arizona was a good one. This is all over ESPN and the paper. I know she has make up media today, but we need to take her to dinner tonight Calliope. I am supposed to be meeting with the PGA. Are you comfortable to take her yourself? If not today, tomorrow. I owe her everything."

"Daddy, I don't know if that is something, she would be interested in. I will ask her, but wouldn't it be better if you were there too? I mean you are the one who wants to do the dinner." Callie was not opposed to a one on one dinner with Arizona, but it was her father's idea.

"Nonsense Calliope. I will keep Sofia tonight and you treat Arizona to dinner. She needs to know how much we appreciate not only her partnership with our company, but what she did for our family. Once The Race is over, I will be inviting her to our Sunday brunch." Callie could tell there was no arguing with her father about this.

"Okay Daddy. I am actually grabbing coffee with her now. I will ask her about dinner."

"Well, go then. Sofia and I are going to enjoy breakfast and then I am going to have her with me today. I won't be letting her out of my sight until my meeting this evening. It is a Sofia Abuelo day!"

Sofia let out her signature excited shriek. Sofia Abuelo days always meant spoiling. The girl knew what her day looked like and she could not be more excited.

Callie crouched down and extended her arms. "Okay Sof, you listen to Abuelo and I will be here in the morning to get you. I was thinking you and I could go get pedicures tomorrow. You are at Tia Aria's next week, so I want some Mommy Sof time!". Sofia just gave her a nod, smile, and giant hug before she turned to head to the kitchen.

As Callie made her way through the lobby, she was stopped by her name being called. 'What the hell? It is 8 in the morning. Can't I just have a damn cup of coffee." When Callie turned around, she saw Penny approaching.

"Cal! I heard about Sof. Is she okay?!" Penny seemed to genuinely care. It was her hand stroking Callie's forearm that gave Callie pause. 'Well you did agree to go on a date with her you dummy'.

"Morning Penny. Yes, Sofia is okay. She is with my Dad now and they are having a day. I am sure she will be spoiled rotten and forget about yesterday. Thank you for asking though."

"Thank goodness. I was so worried when I saw it. So, if you are not busy right now would you maybe want to grab a cup of coffee?" Penny took a step closer and was now a little closer than Callie was comfortable with.

"Actually, I am meeting someone for coffee now. I should get going." Callie turned to walk away but Penny grabbed her hand stopping her.

"Well, in that case I just want to say I am really looking forward to tomorrow." Penny kissed her on the cheek and walked away.

Callie realized at that moment she had to find a way to get out of her date on Friday. There was not one thing that drew her to Penny romantically. When Penny kissed her, she wasn't even thinking of Penny. She was thinking of the person who was currently staring right at her.

Arizona's POV

Arizona watched as the red head not only grabbed Callie's hand, but kissed her cheek before walking away. Was all of this in Arizona's head? Had she really misread the signs that bad. Callie was now looking directly at Arizona and what she saw in her eyes looked a lot like guilt?Arizona reminded herself that Callie didn't owe her anything, they were not dating, and they didn't even know each other.

When Callie walked into the café she walked up and looked to order coffee. She turned around and pointed to the table Arizona was sitting at and then started heading that way. Arizona decided she would go the route of acting like she didn't care.

As Callie approached the table, Arizona flashed her a smile that didn't reach her eyes. She motioned for Callie to take a seat across from her.

"Sorry I took so long. My Dad is quite the talker and he had to explain how he was taking Sof for the day and not letting her out of his sight." Callie seemed nervous.

"No worries. I was just responding to some emails and I have no where to be until 10." Arizona tried her best to sound nonchalant and she had no idea if it was working.

"Oh yeah, make up media. I am sorry you are roped into that because of missing yesterday." Callie reached out to grab Arizona's hand.

Just then, the barista came and delivered Callie's coffee.

"It is really no big deal Callie. It is part of the gig. Media comes with the territory. Now that it is just me, I can keep it to an hour. Really, it's a win." Arizona pulled her hand away to play with her empty coffee cup.

"So, I was wondering if I could take you to dinner tonight. On behalf of The Torres Company. Celebrate our partnership and more than anything thank you for yesterday." Callie flashed her one of those beautiful smiles.

"Uh I mean, I would normally say yes but it has been kind of a crazy week. I was kind of hoping to relax with Teddy and Tim tonight. Plus as much as it would be a business dinner, I don't really want to start any drama with your girlfriend." Arizona gestured towards the lobby where she had just seen Callie and the red head. "If we had dinner after the photo in the paper this morning, it would just cause a stir. So I will politely decline. I don't do girlfriend drama."

Just as Callie was about to explain to Arizona that Penny was not her girlfriend, the blonde's phone started to ring.

"Listen, Callie. It was nice to chat with you but this is Teddy and I have to take it. I will see you around. Probably next week when The Race starts." Arizona wanted to stay and talk to Callie. But Teddy really was calling her and she was really unnerved by how much the fact Callie had a girlfriend bothered her. She was here for golf. Nothing else she reminded herself. So with her bag from Carlos, and her picture from Sofia she headed out of the café.
