A/N: This chapter is a lot of golf. But I think you will like the ending
Reposting with an edit and format fix. Thank you to Calzonafan123 for spotting a pretty important mistake. My days for the weekend play were repetitive so it got confusing! Should be all set now.
All characters belong to Shonda and Greys Anatomy.
Still Day 1 of The Race – Sunday
Arizona's POV
Arizona was 11 holes into round 1 and she was feeling good. She currently sat in 10th place with a score of 4 under par (-4). She was happy with how she was golfing and as she suspected, having Alex as her partner made her much more relaxed. The blessing and curse of golf is that one round didn't mean anything. She could golf like a superstar today, but then completely blow it with a rough round tomorrow. She knew not to get too excited that she was sitting in the top 10.
Alex was having himself a day. He currently sat tied for second with Preston Burke with a score of 10 under par (-10). She was very happy to report that George O'Malley was having a bad day. Now, Arizona was not one to wish ill will on anyone, but George and Preston had really got under her skin earlier in the morning. Derek Shepard sat in sole first place with a score of 12 under par (-12). Catching him was most definitely doable. She just had to perform well the rest of today, and her next two rounds.
The Race was structured a bit differently than your typical tournament. Each player golfed 3 rounds. They were broken up between Sunday and Thursday. Arizona would be golfing Sunday (today), Tuesday, and Thursday. Your score from those 3 rounds would be computed and then it would be determined if you went to the final rounds (weekend play). Only 10 golfers would advance to weekend play. The top 10 golfers then had their scores set back to zero. If there were any ties in the first 10 places, there would be a play in round for those who tied on Friday. It was pretty rare considering there was a full 54 holes of golf played prior to the final rounds. It did happen sometimes though.
If you made the top 10 then you would golf one round on Saturday and one on Sunday. Your score from your Saturday and Sunday rounds are what really mattered. The person with the lowest score after Saturday and Sunday would win The Race. It was a little unconventional to not use the overall tournament score to decide the winners, but that is how The Race had always been played.
The fact Arizona was sitting in 10th with 7 holes to go on the first day made her feel pretty proud. Not too comfortable though. As we all know, one bad round in The Race could completely blow your chances of getting to weekend play.
Hole 12
Arizona stepped up to the tee ready to start the 11th hole of the day. That is when a fan ran onto the green and would not leave. What the hell, this isn't the Superbowl Arizona thought to herself. But this was not her problem to deal with. She turned around to talk to Tim about strategy. You see, holes like hole 12 were Arizona's bread and butter. She could drive the ball and putt well, but her iron game was next to perfection. The 12th hole was only 200 yards. This is a hole where she would be using her iron from the beginning. This would be the hole that gave her the opportunity to jump positions over the next week. She knew that for a fact. As she was talking with Tim and the fan was still being dealt with, she saw a flash from the corner of her eye, it was a Black and Gold golf cart speeding towards their hole. Must be security. It was indeed security, but the person driving is what caught her eye. Callie.
Callie's POV
So far, The Race was off to a fantastic start. The weather was perfect, the fans were happy, but most importantly - the feedback on the course from the few golfers who had already finished for the day was fantastic. One of the bigger name golfers, Andrew DeLuca, had specifically sought her out to tell her that this is one of the best courses he had played on in years. YES!
As Callie was talking to Mark about what needed to be done with the food orders for the week her walkie talkie came to life.
"Security to hole 12, security to hole 12. Fan on the green."
"What the hell" Callie mumbled. This was the first instance of anything happening today so she figured it would be best to show her face with the team who responded. Pressing the walkie button down Callie replied.
"This is Callie Torres. Security team 2 please meet me at the back carts. I will drive us out there. Be there in 2 minutes."
Mark looked a bit surprised. "Torres, you know I love the control freak side of you, but why do you feel the need to respond to a security call?"
"Usually I wouldn't. But I think the fact everything has been so seamless today; it would be good to show my face for this incident." She grabbed her blazer and headed towards the door.
"Makes sense. Just be careful Torres."
Callie met the security team out by the golf cart. One of her favorite security guards, Anthony, was on security team 2 which is why she called for them. They loaded into the cart and she drove them out to the 12th hole. It was a bit towards the back and actually the shortest hole on the course. She wasn't entirely surprised this was the hole that a fan caused problems on. This hole everyone was packed pretty close together due to the distance. So, the fan would be pretty close to the golfers that were currently teeing off. She would make sure she approached them to apologize and ensure everything else was going smooth. When she pulled up Anthony and his partner immediately handled the unruly fan. Callie didn't give second chances and even if she did, the PGA would not be okay with that fan being let back in.
As Callie approached the two golfers that were currently at the hole, she couldn't miss the curly blonde ponytail that was sticking out from the pink hat the golfer on the right was wearing. Arizona. Callie approached Arizona and the other golfer. As they turned around, she was met with the dimpled smile she couldn't stop thinking about.
"Calliope, what a pleasant surprise. How are you?" Arizona spoke before she had a chance.
"Hey, Arizona. I am doing well. I wanted to stop by and make sure everything was okay aside from the fan running on the green. We are really sorry about that. We doubled security this week, but it seems someone slipped past." Callie rambled.
Arizona just smiled at her, the golfer next to Arizona seemed to be smirking at both of them. Callie extended her hand to the other golfer to introduce herself.
"Hello, my name is Callie Torres. Part owner of The Calliope. Like I said, I just wanted to check on you two."
The other golfer, who she would admit was pretty handsome, extended his hand to shake hers as well. "Alex Karev. Everything has been great. Thank you. The fan stuff happens. Don't sweat it." He turned to walk away with a wave over his shoulder.
Callie went to turn around when Arizona stopped her.
"Calliope wait….I uh, just wanted to say thank you for the text this morning. I saw it right before I teed off."
As Arizona went to tuck her hair behind her ear, Callie's eyes went to her wrist. She was wearing the bracelet that Sofia had made for her. Callie couldn't help the giant smile that came across her face.
"Wait till I tell Sof that you are wearing the bracelet. She has been talking about you nonstop and insisted she make you a sign, when she woke up at 5 this morning."
Just as Arizona went to respond Callie saw someone running towards them. Callie immediately grabbed Arizona by the arm and pulled her behind her. As the person approached, without any evidence of slowing down, Callie braced herself for impact.
*BAM* The unidentified woman smacked right into Callie causing her to lose her footing and fall. As soon as Callie shook off what had happened, she had the woman flipped over on her stomach in an arm lock. It all happened in the blink of an eye and before Callie could look up Anthony was there grabbing the woman and escorting her away from Arizona and Callie.
Arizona's POV
Before Arizona even know what was happening, Callie was grabbing her and yanking her behind her. Damn she is strong. When Arizona looked up to see what was happening some woman had plowed Callie over. But the woman seemed to have messed with the wrong person because Callie quickly flipped her over and had her in an arm lock. Holy shit that was hot.
When some big security guard finally had the woman up and was leading her away Arizona heard the woman yell "I love you Arizona! I am better for you than her!". Arizona was a bit taken back since she didn't know what the hell that lady was talking about. Better for her than who?
Arizona quickly kneeled down and helped Callie stand up. She noticed Callie had a bit of a bruise forming on her cheek and a tiny cut on her jaw. The woman must have gotten her pretty good.
"Oh my gosh, Calliope are you okay?" Arizona still had her arm around Callie's waist helping her up.
"Yeah, I am okay. I just saw her charging at you. I didn't think she was going to tackle me like a dang football player." Arizona noticed Callie wince as she tried to laugh it off.
"You didn't have to do that. I am so sorry you got hurt because of some crazy fan. Hole 12 must be cursed or something." Arizona tried to joke with her.
"Well, lets just say we are even now. You know child drowning is in the same category as crazed fan tackle." There was that damn smile again. Arizona couldn't resist. She walked Callie over to the golf cart and grabbed the first aid kit that was attached to the top.
Arizona took out an antibacterial wipe and gently grabbed the side of Callie's face that wasn't cut to hold her head steady.
"This might sting a little, but I don't want you to get an infection or anything." Arizona whispered as she gently took the wipe and started to dab at the blood and cut that was on Callie's jaw. As Callie winced in pain Arizona couldn't help but marvel at just how beautiful Callie was. As Arizona dabbed a bit harder Callie pulled away.
"A little bit. Jeeze that hurts!" Callie whined.
"Well, next time don't throw yourself in front of some crazy woman." Arizona was clearly joking. "But seriously Calliope, thank you for doing that. I appreciate you protecting me." Arizona gave Callie a genuine smile and then immediately got butterflies thinking of Callie didn't even hesitate to stand in front of her while that woman was charging them.
"Well, you know the first woman golfer in the PGA getting hurt by a crazed fan wouldn't be good for business." Callie replied, winking at Arizona.
Once the cut was all cleaned up, Arizona grabbed the icepack and popped it. She gently placed it on Callie's face.
"Here, keep this ice on for a while. There is a medic in the golfer's tent by the first hole. You should stop in there before going back inside."
Arizona heard the officials rounding everyone up to start play again. As Arizona was getting ready to say goodbye Callie interjected with the last thing Arizona was expecting to hear.
"I don't have a girlfriend. That wasn't my girlfriend." Callie looked like she was just as surprised at what came out of her mouth as Arizona was.
"Ooookay" was all Arizona could muster. Callie doesn't have a girlfriend.
"Uh, sorry. I don't know why I felt the need to say that. Sorry. Thank you for the ice pack and cleaning out my cut. I am going to head to that medic tent. Good luck the rest of the day." Callie got up to walk towards the driver's side of the golf cart.
"Have dinner with me!" Arizona practically shouted at Callie. Callie's beautiful expressive brown eyes widened, and her eyebrows raised. "Uh, I mean would you like to have dinner with me? I don't golf tomorrow. We could go to dinner if you are not busy. Maybe do that dancing you talked about before?" Arizona grabbed the back of her neck. What the hell are you doing? Asking her out on a date while you are in the middle of a tournament?
Arizona and Callie stood there staring at each other. Callie put the keys into the cart and as she was getting situated to drive away she smiled at Arizona.
"Yes. I would love to have dinner with you. Text me tomorrow." At that, Callie drove away.
Arizona turned around and headed back to the tee box of the hole. Karev couldn't hide his smirk when she approached.
"Nice, Robbins. She is hot. I saw O'Malley talking to her before the dinner. She shot him down when he asked her to be his date." Alex was clearly loving how embarrassed Arizona was at the moment.
"Shut it Karev. Let me kick your ass on this hole. Winner of this hole buys drinks tonight." She knew that meant free drinks for her!
As she approached Tim, he just smiled at her. He handed her, her favorite iron. With her club in hand and ball set she took a deep breath to clear her head. She turned around and set up her shot. As Arizona pulled back, she swung and connected perfectly with the ball. Just as she suspected, the shot landed 10 feet from the hole.
Yeah, hole 12 would be her lucky one this weekend.
