Chapter 13
Monday
Arizona POV
Yesterday's round had been really good for Arizona. She had managed to move up in the rankings and currently sat in 8th place. Today there would be more golfers going that hadn't been scheduled for yesterday, so she could drop in the rankings. That was her least favorite part about The Race. Theoretically she could finish her round on Thursday thinking we was into weekend play but could have someone surpass her at the last minute to knock her out. Granted the people who golfed after her did fall pretty low in the ranking, but the beauty of golf is any tournament was up for grabs.
Today was her "off day" and she chose to sleep in and then meet up with Teddy and Tim for lunch. Her parents were going to meet them at the restaurant as well and Arizona was so glad, they had made it. Their early morning flight had been delayed and she had received a text about an hour ago they had landed. As excited as she was for her parent's arrival, she also couldn't forget who she was having dinner with tonight. When she had basically yelled at Callie to have dinner with her, she thought for sure she had scared her away. But when she said yes, she felt like she was on cloud 9. That feeling had carried for the rest of the day yesterday. That paired with how well she finished the last 6 holes. She couldn't be happier.
Arizona was headed out to meet everyone at a bar around the block for lunch. Tim and Teddy both had sworn this bar had the best food. So, Arizona happily agreed to join them. She was doing her best to give the two space, but she missed her brother and was excited to have her 4-favorite people in on place during the biggest week of her life. As Arizona walked into the bar, she saw Teddy and Tim whispering closely, Tim's hand on Teddy's thigh. Arizona walked up to them and couldn't help but give them a hard time.
"Jeeze Teds, not sick of this guy yet?" Teddy and Tim seemed to snap out of their love bubble.
"AZ, holy crap you scared me. But no. I am actually a pretty big fan of his" Teddy didn't take her eyes off of Tim when she responded. Tim just sat there with a goofy smitten smile on his face.
"Hellllo to you too Timothy. You do know Mom and Dad will be here any second. Are you telling them about this?" pointing between the two of them.
"Nope. Neither are you. This is still new. So just play cool."
"Sure. Fine with me." She sat down and ordered a drink.
As their drinks arrived, they heard the bell that hung over the door indicating someone had entered the bar. When she turned around, she saw her parents. A feeling of comfort came over her. She hadn't realized how much she missed them being there until she saw them. Her mother immediately spotted them and all but dragged her father to the table.
"My babies! I missed you two so much. Zona we are so sorry we were not here for your first round yesterday. You bet we watched it on TV though!" Her mom wrapped her in a hug only a mother could give. Her dad was saying hi to Teddy and Tim while her mother hugged the life out of her.
As her Dad rounded the table, he grabbed his wife's shoulder and said "Okay Barb, don't suffocate the poor girl. She still has a few rounds to play." Her mother just rolled her eyes and let Arizona go.
"Hi Pops. I am so glad you are here!" Arizona gave her Dad a huge hug. Daniel Robbins (who liked to be referred to as The Colonel) came from a family of all boys so Arizona had been a Daddy's girl from day 1. She had the Colonel wrapped around her finger. He was the person she was most afraid to come out to. But when she expected him to yell and scream, he just asked "Are you still the person I raised you to be?" When Arizona responded yes, he patted her on the shoulder and kissed her cheek. The rest is history.
"It is good to see you too Bug. You played a hell of a round yesterday. I saw the rowdy fans. You handled yourself well. Just keep your head in the game."
They all sat down to enjoy their lunch. Conversation flowed freely and laughs were had by everyone. It was so nice to have her parents, Teddy, and Tim all in one place. This was her team. These were the people who mattered to her. When they were ready to head out her mother chimed in.
"What are we thinking for dinner tonight? I know I can't cook but I can find somewhere for us to eat." Teddy, Tim, and her Dad all seemed to nod in agreement and all eyes turned to her for confirmation.
She shuffled in her seat a bit nervously and said "Well, actually I have plans tonight. We can have breakfast tomorrow before I tee off. Mama, Pops I am up in the Presidential Suite so how about you guys stay with me? Also, there is a full kitchen if you decided you wanted to cook Mama. I know there are only a few rooms reserved per golfer so I would hate for you to have to stay offsite." Arizona rambled hoping the offer to stay with her would stop any questions about her plans for the night.
"Wow Bug, the Presidential Suite. You scored with that. How are you affording that?" Her Dad, always straight to the point.
Tim chimed in "Carlos Torres, owner of the hotel put her up in it for free! He also offered her a sponsorship which she accepted. The guy is great, so is his daughter. The little girl Arizona saved from drowning was actually his granddaughter." Arizona just stared at Tim. He was always an over sharer.
Barbara Robbins, never one to gloss over a subject just stared at Arizona. "So, you made plans for the night your parents were arriving in town? I know you are busy and in high demand this week, but would you mind telling me what was so important that you can't make time for us tonight."
Arizona just rolled her eyes. "Mama. I just have plans. Don't worry about it."
"Excuse me, but I know you did not just roll your eyes at me Arizona Robbins." Growing up as the daughter of a Marine was nothing compared to growing up the daughter of the wife of a Marine. Her Mother had always run a tight ship.
"Sorry Mama. I…well. I actually…h-have a date." Arizona mumbled. All eyes immediately fell on her and she felt her face flush. She noticed Teddy gave her a knowing smirk. Teddy and Arizona had briefly talked about Callie and their flirting. Surprisingly Teddy is the one who told her to just go for it. It was a far cry from the "no hookups" speech she had started the week with. But Arizona knew it was because of her and Tim. Even though Teddy had encouraged her, Arizona had not told anyone about the date. She looked at Teddy and was silently asking her to keep her mouth shut.
"Oh, a date! How exciting sweetie! Can we meet this young lady?" Her mother's mood did a complete 180. She was always on Arizona about her lack of serious dating. Before Arizona could tell her mom, in the nicest way possible, to back off her Dad stepped in.
"Now Barb leave the girl alone. She will introduce us if there is a reason to." Her father shot her a wink and Arizona had never been more grateful for his ability to act as a buffer. Her mother just mumbled but seemed to accept it.
It was now 4:30pm and Arizona would be picking Callie up at 7 for their date. The group stood up and headed back to the hotel. Arizona would briefly show her parents around and get them settled in before she got ready to go. She suddenly realized that it had been a terrible idea to let her parents stay with her. What the hell was she going to do if the date with Callie had gone really well? She would not be bringing her back to her suite with her parents there. Shit.
Callie's POV
Callie was staring at the clock. It was 6:45 and she was nervous. She had been stressing about this date all day. She had Face Timed Aria 4 different times with different outfits, and she had finally settled on a black dress that hung perfectly to her curves. The open back just went the extra mile to make the dress sexy. Her hair was down and lightly curled, and her makeup was just subtle enough to still look perfect. She looked at herself in the mirror and was more than happy with the finished product. Dang. I look hot.
Callie decided that in order to pass the time quickly, she would call Sofia. She had missed her already. The phone rang and rang and finally on the last ring Mark picked up. She looked down at her phone and could have sworn she dialed Aria's number.
"Uh, hello, Mark? Why are you answering Aria's phone? Is everything okay?" Callie had a momentary panic.
"Torres! Everything is fine. We are currently playing Uno with the girls and Aria is getting snacks." Callie couldn't help but smile at how domestic it all sounded. Mark was kind of a playboy so the fact he was at Aria's house on a Monday night playing Uno with the girls made Callie happy for her sister. She deserved it.
"Oh. Well, can I talk to Sof really quick?" Mark knew about Callie's date, but she was grateful he chose not to tease her about it right now.
"Sure, thing Torres. Have fun tonight and don't do anything I wouldn't do." Callie heard Mark call for Sofia and then a bunch of screaming and rustling on the other end of the phone.
"Mami! I miss you. We are playing Uno and Tia Aria is letting us have popcorn AND candy."
"Oh, Mija I miss you too. We are going to have dinner with everyone on Wednesday. I can't wait to see you. Popcorn and candy? You better make sure you brush those teeth good tonight." Callie didn't realize how much she missed Sofia until she heard her voice.
They talked for the next few minutes and when Sofia had enough of Callie, she quickly hung up the phone with a mumbled I love you. That girl was something else. But she was glad she felt comfortable enough with Aria, Mark, and the girls that she didn't seem to miss her too much. As she hung up the phone, she heard a knock on the door.
When Callie opened the door, she couldn't help that audible gasp that left her. In front of her stood the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. Arizona was in a red dress that fell just above her knees. Her hair was down and straight. The dress she was wearing had a deep cut neckline and the cleavage that was on display was enough to make Callie's knees weak. It was Arizona's giggle that broke Callie out of her daze.
"Hey. You, uh-h. You look absolutely stunning." Callie managed to get out. She was met with that dimple smile that she loved so much.
"Well thank you Calliope, you look beautiful as well. These are for you." Arizona handed her the most beautiful bouquet of roses.
"Thank you. These are beautiful. Let me put them in some water really quick. Please come in." Callie walked over to the kitchen of the suite of the hotel. Callie figured it would be best if she stayed at the hotel this week since she didn't have Sofia at home, and she could be close in case anyone at the tournament needed anything.
As Callie walked back into the living area, she felt her palms get sweaty. She hadn't been nervous for a date in a while. But this blonde seemed to have a hold on her. She couldn't describe it, but she was already so drawn to her.
"So, I realized after you asked me out, I should have volunteered to plan this. I do live in Miami after all." Callie had thought about that when Arizona had texted her to tell her she would pick her up at 7.
"Oh Calliope, do you have such little faith in me? I have a great night planned for us. Just trust me." Arizona grabbed Callie's hand and lead her out of the suite towards the elevator.
Callie would follow Arizona anywhere she wanted her to. As they stepped in the elevator, she couldn't help but notice that Arizona had not let go of her hand. Callie was not big on PDA but holding Arizona's hand just felt right. Arizona must have notice that Callie had looked down at their joined hands because she just gave her hand a squeeze and smiled at her.
Arizona's POV
Arizona had researched and researched as to where to take Callie out. She too thought that maybe it would have been better to have Callie plan the evening, but she was not one to ask a person out only to let them plan the date.
When Callie opened the door of the hotel suite Arizona had to steady her breathing. She had never in her life seen such a beautiful woman. The way Callie's black dress stopped just above her knees gave Arizona a view of her long beautiful legs. Her dark beautiful hair was down and wavy. It fell just above her breasts. Callie looked flawless. When she turned around to put the flowers in water Arizona took in the view of her perfect ass. Arizona was suddenly an ass girl. If it belonged to Callie, she loved it.
As Arizona and Callie took the elevator downstairs Callie pushed the "B" button. Arizona gave her a confused look and she just chuckled.
"This will take us to the basement exit. I don't want to put you in a position of having a news story ran about your date when they should be focusing on your golfing."
Arizona didn't realize the fact she had overlooked that until that very moment. She was use to no one really caring what she did. This whole situation was so new to her. She was grateful someone on this date had their head on straight.
"Thank you, Calliope. Though being photographed with you wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. You look so beautiful." Arizona was laying the charm on thick, but she was not lying. The Latina was breathtaking.
"So, where are we going? I am really curious what you decided on." Callie smiled at Arizona and the warmth Arizona felt with Callie's hand in hers was surprising. She was not normally a hand holder.
"Well, I asked around and got us reservations at this Italian restaurant called "La Bellezza". It seemed pretty fitting considering who my date was."
"A reservation at La Bellezza. Very impressive Ms. Robbins." Callie's voice sent shivers up Arizona's spine. This woman was going to be the death of her, and the night just started.
"After dinner I figured we could go over to The Heat. Everything I read said that was the best place for dancing in Miami. I figured a Monday night wouldn't be too crowded but when I called ahead, I got us the last booth. We will see if you can keep up with me on the dance floor." Arizona shot Callie a flirty wink.
When they got out of their Uber at the restaurant Arizona grabbed Callie's hand and lead her to the hostess stand. They were greeted by a tall good-looking man in a perfectly tailored suit.
"Ciao, hai una prenotazione?" (Hello, do you have a reservation?)
"Sì. La prenotazione è sotto Robbins per favore." (Yes. The reservation is under Robbins please.) Arizona responded.
She noticed that Callie had squeezed her hand tighter when she was responding to the hostess. Hmm she likes Italian huh.
Callie's POV
She speaks Italian. Of course, she does. Is there anything about this woman that does not completely draw Callie to her? The fact Arizona had managed to get reservations at this restaurant at such short notice was pretty remarkable. She was not going to question it though. She had been wanting to try this place for the last few months.
As they walked towards their table Arizona placed her hand on the small of Callie's back. The goosebumps that formed were impossible to hide. Callie knew Arizona noticed them because her thumb started rubbing the small of her back. As they sat down, and the hostess walked away Callie looked over at Arizona.
"So, Italian. Can't say I was expecting that." Callie hoped that didn't offend the blonde.
"Well I grew up a military brat, so I moved around a lot. We spent two years in Italy at the Aviano Air Base. It is actually an Air Force base and my Dad was in the Army, so it was weird we were there. But his team was asked to train some of the fighter pilots in combat, so we got to spend two years at the base there. I picked Italian up pretty quickly since I was only 8 when we were there. It is true what they say about being able to pick up languages easier when you are younger." Arizona explained.
"Wow. That sounds pretty interesting. I grew up here in Miami. I know Spanish and a tiny bit of French. My ex brother in law was from France and use to try to teach the girls so I picked up at thing or two." Callie wanted to know everything there was to know about Arizona Robbins.
The waiter came and took their drink order. Arizona went with a white wine while Callie opted for red. They also ordered their dinner at the same time. Both knowing exactly what they wanted to try.
The next question Arizona asked was the last thing she was expecting, but it also solidified the fact Callie was in trouble. She was already so captivated by Arizona. She had to refocus in order to answer Arizona's question.
"So, tell me about Sofia. I know it isn't typical first date material, but I want to hear about her." The blonde seemed absolutely genuine in her questions. Callie just smiled.
"Well, Sofia is 6 years old. She is a mini genius. I think she gets that from me. She also has my temper which can be scary at times. It is just me and her and quite honestly, she is my best friend." Callie was beaming with pride talking about her daughter. She noticed how Arizona just sat totally interested in what she had to say.
"That is amazing. She is a lucky girl. Not many mothers of a 6-year-old would classify them as their best friend. I was an absolute nightmare a 6. Tim and I were trouble together."
"You, trouble? For some reason I have no doubt that is 100% true. You and your brother seem close. Is it hard to work together since you are siblings?" Callie asked as she took a drink of her wine.
"Sometimes it is difficult. We had a lot of growing pains, but we worked it out. Now, I couldn't do this without him. People really underestimate how important a good caddy is. Tim is the best. I attribute a lot of my success to him." Arizona was clearly proud of her brother. It was refreshing to see. "What about you and Aria?" Arizona asked.
"Aria and I were never close growing up. She liked to go out and party and that just wasn't me. I liked to read and do schoolwork. I wasn't big in the party scene. We only grew closer when she had the twins. She needed a lot of help. Her ex husband is kind of the worst. So, I stepped up. I actually had Sofia about a year after she had Allegra and Aurora."
"Oh wow. That has to be nice having them all so close in age."
Callie laughed "Yeah, it is nice. It is also really hectic. Those three together are trouble."
As their food came the conversation continued to naturally flow. Arizona asked about Callie's family and her work. She seemed so interested in everything Callie told her. Callie felt seen for the first time in forever. It was also really refreshing to learn more about Arizona. She was so smart and kind.
Arizona's POV
Arizona hadn't had this much fun on a date in so long. Callie was just so interesting and seeing how much love and passion she had for everything was refreshing. Arizona had learned so much about Callie over the course of dinner part of her didn't want to leave. Arizona was looking forward to going dancing with Callie. She was absolutely stunning. But at the same time, she had really enjoyed just sitting and getting to know the brunette.
As the waiter approached, he asked if they wanted dessert. Normally Arizona would turn this down, but Callie had made a comment when they first looked at the menu about the apple crumble sounding good. Arizona looked at Callie and it looked like Callie was about to say no.
"Do you want to split that apple crumble you mentioned when we sat down? It does sound pretty good." In all honesty, Arizona just wanted to talk to a Callie a bit longer. Callie just smiled and nodded her head. With that, the waiter had retreated back to the kitchen.
"So, I have had a really good time tonight. It isn't anywhere near over, but I just wanted to let you know that I have really enjoyed getting to know you." Wow Robbins you sound like a loser. Arizona wished she could take back the statement as soon as it came out of her mouth.
Callie reached her hand across the table and grabbed Arizona's. The blonde's throat went dry at her touch.
"This dinner has been the best date I have been on in a while. I appreciate you saying that. First dates are always weird. I won't lie, I am excited for dancing." Callie's thumb was rubbing the back of Arizona's hand. Normally Arizona was able to play it cool, but she was blushing from simple hand holding.
"Dancing is coming, don't you worry. I am just a sucker for desert. Which, I meant to tell you. Those brownies you had delivered were honestly delicious. I am embarrassed to admit I didn't share them with Tim and Teddy like I had planned." The blonde had a huge sweet tooth and was grateful that Callie was comfortable ordering dessert. Sometimes people got weird about dessert on dates.
Callie let out a full laugh "Holy moly Arizona, there were like 10 brownies there. I guess golf is a good work out, considering the fact you have the most beautiful body I have ever seen."
"Well Calliope, I do work out quite often. But thank you for the compliment. I would be remiss to not comment on how absolutely gorgeous your body is as well. I am excited to see it on the dance floor." Arizona was 3 glasses of wine in. Her confidence was up and the stunning woman in front of her was driving her wild.
Arizona saw Callie visibly blush and knew it was a mixture of the 3 glasses of wine the brunette had, and Arizona's comment.
Just then the waiter appeared with their desert. As they enjoyed the sweet treat the tension was clearly boiling. They both made it a point to not break eye contact as they slowly enjoyed their desert. When the waiter returned with the check, Arizona put her card down before Callie could protest. Once the bill was paid, they were ready to head out. The dance club was about 3 blocks away, so Arizona had suggested they walk, which Callie agreed to. As soon as they walked out of the restaurant the warm air met their faces. Arizona took Callie's hand and pulled her close. Time for dancing. I can't wait to feel her body on mine. Arizona thought as they walked hand in hand through the bustling streets of Miami.
