Chapter 16
Arizona's POV
Arizona was on the 9th hole of her second round and she was feeling it. Alex was having a rough day, but he currently sat in 4th place pretty comfortably. Thankfully he wasn't one of those golfers that turned into a jerk if they were not golfing well. She had been around far too many of those. The score board showed Arizona in 7th, which made her smile. She was halfway through her day and had already advanced 2 positions. It also helped she sat in front of George O'Malley. She really couldn't stand that guy. Him and Burke were the only two golfers who had given her a hard time. Everyone else had been so awesome towards her. The current score board read.

Arizona's parents stood where she could see them at all times and the pride that was radiating from their faces each time she glanced their way made her feel so good. Her parents had always been her biggest cheer leaders. Her goal was to make them proud. Not only as their daughter, but in her golf career as well. She also knew that if she looked good, Tim looked good. She had seen a few golfers approach him over the last few days. She knew she had nothing to worry about, but the fact others were taking interest in him made her feel good. Tim was a fantastic caddy. There were a handful of tournaments that were only decided by a few holes, and she had won those thanks to Tim. When she disagreed with him about the club to use, or strategy on a hole he wasn't disrespectful. He did, however, make sure she understood why he felt the way he did in his assessments. 90% of the time, Tim was right. So she had learned to just listen to him. She had the talent and God given ability to swing the club, but Tim had the brain. Together they were a well-oiled successful machine.
Arizona stepped up to the 9th hole and took a deep breath. This hole had given her trouble her last outing. She ended up double bogeying it and she knew if she did that this round, George would pass her for the 7th spot. As much as Arizona hated to admit it, George had golfed a hell of a round today. The hole was 511 yards. It was one of the longer ones on this course and her driving had not been great today. As she stepped up to her tee, she adjusted her hat and prepared her shot. When she pulled back and swung through, the crispness she felt as the driver connected with the ball was something, she had been missing all day. As the ball soared right where she wanted it, she could hear her parents cheering. She let out relieved sigh and handed the driver back to Tim.
"Hell of a drive sis. Where has that been all day?" Tim asked. Clearly, he was joking but he wasn't wrong. The reality of the situation is that the men she was playing with were all very strong drivers. It wasn't sexist or diminishing her own talent, it was true. These men could drive the hell out of the ball. But her iron game and putting game have been her saving grace. She knew she had the ability to compete at a high level in this tournament. She never would have accepted the invitation if she wasn't confident, she could actually win.
As Arizona looked over at her parents, she noticed a head of dark hair walking behind the crowd in the "restricted area". Yeah it had only been a week since she met Callie, but there was no doubt in her mind that is who was walking by. As she looked past the crowd her eyes locked with Callie's. She was happy she had the opportunity to see her in person since she had to take off so early that morning. She waved her over while they stopped play for a commercial break.
Callie walked right past the security as she flashed her badge. Arizona couldn't help but flash back to the previous night when she saw Callie. She looked gorgeous right now, but now that Arizona knew what Callie looked like without her business clothes on, she had to stop herself from drooling. Callie seemed to have noticed Arizona staring because as she approached, she heard Callie laughing.
"Hello Ms. Robbins. Is everything going well today?" Callie was being all business while they had an audience.
"Well hello Calliope. Everything is great. I had a very nice night at your establishment. I have honestly never felt better." Arizona noticed the blush that appeared on Callie's cheeks.
"I am glad that we could take care of your needs while you stay here at The Calliope. We have heard nothing but great things about your performance as well." Arizona didn't miss the double meaning there. Now it was her turn to blush.
As the ESPN team started waving at the PGA facilitators it was unfortunately time to wrap up the conversation.
"I do have to get back to this. If you are free tonight, would you want to grab a drink? Nothing fancy. I would just love to see you. Annnnd I am clearly showing my inability to play it cool here." Arizona never asked for back to back dates, but Callie was not a normal woman. She wanted to spend all her time with her. At this point, she didn't care how lame that made her look.
Callie just smiled. "I would love to. The lack of ability to play it cool is hot" Callie leaned in and whispered the last word to Arizona. Before she could respond Callie was walking away.
Damn that woman was going to be the death of her.
As Arizona turned around, she didn't miss the glare her mother was giving her. Yup, she would definitely be getting questions about Callie from her mom after this round.
Arizona ended up getting an eagle on the 9th hole. Something that she was actually really proud of. She would take every stroke she could get in the next few days. Alex was able to rally and finish the day even at Par. He dropped down to 5th, but Arizona was confident he wouldn't have any issues next time they were out. Arizona on the other hand finished 6 under par moving her up to 6th. Her and Burke were tied for 6th and if she could move past him, well nothing would make her happier.
As Arizona headed back up to her suite, she bumped into the person she had just been thinking about.
"Ms. Robbins. Quite a round today. You know, I don't usually enjoy sharing a position with someone – but for you I would make an exception" Preston Burke. She pulled away when he tried to graze her arm with his hand. He was such a creep and the way he phrased that statement sent chills up her spine.
"Burke. Nice to see you. I don't think we will have an issue with sharing after the next round. Also, you are not my type." Arizona smiled her most condescending style.
"That's right. I heard some things about you. You know, your lifestyle isn't really on brand for the PGA. I am sure you know that, right?"
"My lifestyle. Excuse me? Are you implying that I don't belong in the PGA because I am gay?" Arizona did not hider her sexuality. Quite frankly, she refused. She was proud of who she was and if this was anyone else, she would have sucker punched them across the face by now.
"Well, you know the demographic of viewers. All I am saying is be careful." Burke phrased that as a threat. What the hell did he mean demographic of viewers? She knew golf was a sport historically played by a certain group of people. However, the changes the game has been seeing for the past 10 years made Burke's comment annoy her even more.
Just as Arizona was about to lose it Teddy approached her.
"Hey Arizona. I could see the steam coming out of your ears from across the lobby. Everything okay?" Teddy knew Arizona and not much could get her as flustered as she currently was.
Arizona recapped her conversation with Burke to Teddy and Teddy was quickly just as pissed. She would never ask Arizona to hide who she was. It was 2020 for goodness sake. Who the hell cares who people love? Teddy knew Burke was just trying to rattle Arizona and it was clearly working.
"Arizona, sweetie, listen. Burke is trying to get under your skin, and it is working. Don't let him win. You have a fan base that is honestly pretty insane. Which is something I have to talk to you about later. Gatorade approached me about you, and they want you. I guess you are scoring supppper high in their key demographic. They want to offer you a 2-year deal." Teddy was just rambling now, but she wanted to show Arizona that people loved her. People knew she was a lesbian and it did not change what they thought of her.
Arizona seemed to have snap out of her daze. "Wow Teds. You are putting in work. Want to have coffee just the two of us tomorrow and we can catch up on business and personal?"
"You bet. Lets say 9? You don't golf tomorrow so you should try to sleep in."
"Sounds good Teds. I am going to shower. I will see you later. Thank you for letting me vent. I don't know what I would do without you." Arizona gave Teddy a hug and then headed upstairs.
Callie's POV
Callie had been racing around the grounds all day. Things between her and Penny were a bit weird, so when a golfer had complained about one of the holes, she really didn't want to call her. As pathetic as it sounded, she pushed it off for Mark to do. He was just talking to her about delegating the other day after all. It was a long day and Callie was exhausted. Not to mention she missed Sofia. Ever since Sofia was born it had been the two of them all the time. Yeah, she worked but she also made it a point to be present with Sofia. Things were really hard in the beginning but now that Sofia was in school full time, she was able to fully miss her when she wasn't around. Aria had texted her earlier pictures of them at the beach. It looked like Sofia was having a great time. She loved her cousins and her Tia Aria. The girls were practically raised as siblings after all.
Callie finished responding to her last email when her phone went off.
Still on for tonight? I know we said drinks, but would you maybe want to grab a bottle of wine and hang out in the hot tub? Todays round kicked my butt. -AZ
Callie was just thinking about how she didn't want to go out to a bar and would have rather done something more one on one and intimate with Arizona. So that text made her heart soar.
You read my mind. I say yes to the hot tub, but not here. I have one at my house. If that is okay with you… -C
Was she being too presumptuous? Inviting her back to her house. Well, they did sleep together last night. She just wanted the blonde to herself.
I love that plan. Text me the address? I can be over in an hour or so. -A
Callie looked at the time and realized it was already 7pm. She packed up her stuff, said goodnight to the staff and headed home. After she texted Arizona the address, she triple checked that Sofia had not recently destroyed the house and went out back to set up the hot tub.
Callie's house was not huge by and means. It was a 4-bedroom, 3 bathrooms. She opted to not live right on the beach, unlike her sister. They were about 15 minutes away from The Calliope and a 2-block walk to the beach. It was the perfect location and it was nice and quiet for her and Sofia.
As Callie was putting together some snacks, she hear the knock at her door. She cleaned off her hands and headed over to open it. When she opened the door, there stood Arizona with more flowers, a bag, and a bottle of wine.
"Come on in. I was just making some snacks to take out back. I really didn't have time for dinner. The day kind of got away from me." Callie hadn't realized it, but she actually missed Arizona. She felt like she knew her. Knew her more than just a woman she met a week ago. Having her over felt right. She was pulled from her thoughts where Arizona placed a quick kiss on her lips.
"Hello Calliope. Snacks sound great. I actually brough a few brownies that some beautiful woman had delivered to me." Arizona walked into the entry way and put her bag down. She turned around and Callie grabbed the bottle of wine and the grocery bag Arizona was holding.
"I am glad to see you are sharing this batch. I think Sofia might be jealous I had them made for you twice before I requested them for her." Callie joked.
"Actually, I brought some specifically for Sofia. I also brought her this." Arizona held up a unicorn beaded bracelet She had remembered seeing Sofia in a unicorn bathing suit hold a unicorn stuffed animal before.
Callie was basically a puddle of mush at this point. This amazing woman had brought stuff specifically for her daughter. Usually when she meets people and they find out she has a daughter, they run for the hills. Arizona seemed to be embracing it.
"Wow. Arizona. She is going to love that. She is currently obsessed with all things rainbows and unicorns."
"Hey! We have something in common." Arizona joked.
Callie walked Arizona through her house and gave her a tour. Arizona was pretty quiet the whole time, which was kind of unlike the Arizona that Callie had come to know the last week or so. She was usually only quiet when something was bothering her. Callie gently grabbed Arizona's arm.
"Hey, are you okay? You have been pretty quiet tonight."
"Oh, yeah. Sorry. Just a long day in the sun." Was all Arizona responded. Callie felt there was more to it, but she didn't want to push Arizona.
"Hot tub?" Callie asked.
"Yes!" Arizona responded, clearly excited.
Callie showed Arizona where she could change and told her to meet her on the back deck. She brought the snacks and wine with two glasses out to her back deck. She had already put her bathing suit on before Arizona came over so now, she just had to wait for Arizona. She turned the outdoor tv on to a music channel and turned on the hanging lights that surrounded the deck. When Arizona walked outside her jaw hit the floor.
A/N: The next chapter is going to be a lot of Callie/Arizona dialogue. I think they really need to start getting to know each other in order to move the story forward. So, there will be some deep hot tub conversation. It was one of my favorite chapters to write 😊
