A/N: I know I usually update twice a week, so I apologize this is late. Just wrapped up my finals 😊
I am glad a lot of you liked the golf aspect of last chapter! I really enjoyed writing it.
Chapter 20
Wednesday Night
Callie's POV
Callie had just watched ESPN announce the final 10 spots for The Race's weekend play. To say she was proud of Arizona being 3rd was an understatement. Not only had she come to care for Arizona as a person but knowing what she went through to get to where she is made the accomplishment that much more amazing. There were few things about Arizona Callie didn't find amazing.
It was a busy day at the hotel, so Callie hadn't made it out to see any of the golfers. The Calliope's rooms were booked at 100% capacity and reservations for the next 6 months were already up 80%. This weekend had done for their business exactly what they had hoped. As happy as Callie was with that, she couldn't help but admit that it was not the best thing that had come out of the last week and a half. She was actively trying not to think of the fact that her blonde hair blue eyed beauty would be leaving in 4 short days. She wanted to know where they stood. Yes, she knew Arizona was going to spend some time in Miami when the season wrapped up but what were they? Callie was afraid if she asked Arizona, she would sound too needy or clingy.
Callie was headed down to the hotel lobby to meet her father, Sofia, Aria, and the girls for their family dinner. This morning had been enough to give Callie a heart attack when Sofia almost walked in and saw Arizona in her bed. A relaxing dinner with her family is just what she needed after the day she had.
As Callie stepped out of the elevator, she was met by George O'Malley one of her least favorite people.
"Callie, hey. I was actually looking for you." George stopped her before she could walk past him.
"Hey George. Congrats on making it to weekend play. What can I help you with?" Callie responded as polite as possible.
"Thanks. No surprise at all. The course you have here is great." Cocky was hot on most people, George was not one of them.
Before Callie could respond George continued "How about you and I grab a drink Friday." He suggested.
Callie knew she had to be professional but the thought of having a drink with this guy was almost enough to make her laugh out loud. "George, that is really nice of you. But I don't think so. I am kind of seeing someone at the moment." It wasn't necessarily a lie. While she didn't know if her and Arizona were exclusive, it was a good excuse to turn George down.
"Ahhh. I had a feeling. You and Robbins huh? Explains the suite and the sponsorship." He snidely stated.
"Woah there. First of all, who it is, is none of your business. Second, the things that Arizona has she earned. Implying anything else makes you look sad. She finished 3rd for God sake. What is your issue. Even if I was not friends with her, do you really think belittling women is attractive? Because it is not George. Not at all." Callie was pissed now.
She watched as George bit his tongue. There were people around and they both knew better than to make a scene. He leaned in and whispered "Robbins is clearly sleeping her way to the top, just not with who I thought. You both are disgusting and going straight to Hell."
Before Callie had a chance to respond Carlos Torres was next to them. He must have heard what George had said because he firmly grabbed George's shoulder. "Mr. O'Malley. Fantastic round today. I am going to have to ask you to take a step away from my daughter and keep clear of her and Ms. Robbins. I would hate for the PGA to hear about your behavior." Carlos was clearly threatening at this point.
George just looked from Carlos to Callie and sheepishly nodded his head. He was halfway across the lobby before Callie could blink. Callie turned to her father and she recognized the look he was giving her. Clearly there would be a conversation about Arizona sooner than she had hoped. Before Carlos could say anything, Sofia came running towards Callie. This is an interruption she was grateful for.
"Mami! There you are. Do you like my shirt?" Sofia was wearing a polo that perfectly matched the one Arizona had worn on the course today. It clearly was not a coincidence.
"Wow Mija, I love it. Where did you get that?"
"I asked Abuelo for one that looked like Arizona's and he got it for me!" Sofia beamed. Clearly proud of her outfit.
"Wow, Abuelo. That was nice of you." Callie just laughed. Anything this girl wanted; her father made it happen.
They all walked over towards Aria and the twins. Just as Callie asked if they were ready to go Mark came jogging up to them.
"Sorry I am late. Last minute guest issue to resolve." He flashed is signature smile.
Callie was lost. When had Mark and Aria become serious enough that he was joining family dinner? Also, when did Aria tell her father about her relationship with Mark. Callie knew she has been a bit preoccupied lately, but this was definitely moving fast.
"Uh, hey Mark. I didn't realize you would be joining us. Good to see you." She hugged him.
"I invited him. Any suitor of my daughter as serious as Mark is more than welcome at our family dinner." Her father stated proudly.
Aria just leaned into Mark and he kissed her head. Callie watched as Mark leaned down and greeted all 3 girls, paying extra special attention to Allegra and Aurora. Callie really needed to speak with Aria. She could not be happier for her sister. Mark was her best friend and Aria deserved to be happy. She was suddenly missing Arizona. Woah. Slow down Torres.
The Torres family enjoyed a nice meal at one of their favorite places. It was a beautiful evening and conversation was flowing freely. The girls were in their own world enjoying their desert when Carlos turned to Callie.
"So….Mija….Anything you would like to talk about." He tried to sound casual.
"Listed Daddy. I know what you are asking and all I am going to say is I don't know what it is right now. It is new. I like her, yes. But that is about as much as I can answer right now." Callie responded trying to sound as nonchalant as possible.
Aria let out a snicker and mumbled "Seemed like you knew what it was when she spent the night last night." Her and Mark were laughing not realizing that not only had Carlos heard them but Callie was about to jump across the table and kill her sister.
"Aria deja de hablar ahora." (Aria, stop talking. Now.) Callie basically growled in a whisper.
"Mija. What is going on here?" Carlos was fully invested in this conversation. Arizona was technically one of his employees, but it had been so long since he had seen his Calliope happy.
"Daddy. Arizona and I are seeing each other. Kind of. We haven't had a formal conversation about what we are. She is going to spend some time in Miami when the season is over. I like her. I really like her. I will tell you when there is something to tell. I promise." Callie needed this conversation to be over.
"Okay. That is good enough for me. I would still very much like for her to join us for brunch on Sunday like we discussed before. But I won't force it given the circumstance."
Callie was so grateful for her father. 2 years ago, this conversation would have been completely different. The fact he was so accepting of her now was all she had ever wanted.
"I promise, I will ask her." Callie leaned over and kissed her father's cheek. She glared at Aria as she sat back down. They would be having a conversation later.
Arizona's POV
Arizona was sitting at the kitchen table in her suite. She was surrounded by her family, Teddy, Alex, and his wife Jo. They had just finished a delicious dinner prepared by her mother and were currently enjoying dessert. She had never seen a human being consume as much food as Alex had in the short time he had been with them.
"Karev. Slow down. You are going to choke, then I won't be able to beat you this weekend." She joked.
"Bitmme Robns" Alex mumbled. Jo smacked her husband upside the head. "Alex. Seriously? I promise he has manners." Jo joked.
"Oh leave the boy alone. He had a long day in the sun, just like you. You are far from perfect missy." Barbra Robbins glared at her daughter. Arizona just leaned down in her seat. A Barbara Robbins glare was not something anyone spoke back to.
"So, Arizona. Alex tells me you know Callie. Her and I went to college together. She is really great. Good choice." Jo winked at Arizona.
As all eyes went to Arizona, Alex started coughing trying not to choke. He took a drink of his water and elbowed Jo. That is when Jo realized this was not public knowledge. She looked around the table at the 4 sets of eyes that were trained directly on Arizona, waiting for her to say something.
Arizona rubbed her face trying to buy herself some time. Before she could say anything, Jo whispered from next to her. "I am so sorry. Alex didn't say it was a secret." Jo was now officially mortified. Quite the first impression she was making.
"It is okay Jo; I will chat with your husband later." She glared at Alex who sheepishly took another bite of his pie.
"Well…. Are you going to acknowledge what Jo just said?" Arizona's mother was impatiently waiting for Arizona to explain. This was not the first time she had heard Callie's name.
Arizona let out a sigh. She liked to keep things to herself. Especially since she didn't really "date" or know if her and Callie were "dating".
"Okay Mama. I have been spending time with Calliope, yes. I like her a lot, yes. But other than that, there is nothing to tell…." Arizona had hoped that answer would pacify her mother. Tim sat across from her with a very amused smirk on his face.
"AZ, isn't that where you were the couple nights you were gone?" Tim quickly threw her under the bus. They loved to mess with each other. While they were best friends, neither of them passed up an opportunity to mess with the other.
"I am not sure how you would be aware of me not being here Timothy. After all, most of your free time is spent in Teddy's room isn't it?" Arizona never went down without a fight.
Barbara and Daniel Robbins, along with Alex and Jo Karev just sat there. Stunned at where the conversation had gone. Teddy's face had grown a dark shade of red. Arizona did feel bad she threw Teddy under the bus along with Tim, but she would get over it.
Tim cleared his throat and grabbed Teddy's hand "Well, that is because Teddy is my girlfriend." He smiled proudly. Before Arizona could think of a witty response, she just smiled. She was happy for her brother and Teddy.
"TIMOTHY DANIEL ROBBINS and THEODORA ALTMAN! When where you going to tell me?" Barbara shrieked. Barbara Robbins was ready for grandkids. She also loved Teddy.
Arizona just sat back and laughed. Crisis averted.
"We were going to tell you after the tournament. This week is about Arizona, not us Mama." Tim finessed his answer perfectly. Attention was back on Arizona.
Daniel cleared his throat all attention turned to him. "Tim, Teddy. You two are a good match. I am happy to hear. Arizona. You have two more rounds left of this tournament. You can't be distracted with some fling." Daniel never got involved in Arizona's personal life, but this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for his daughter. As he looked at Arizona, he quickly realized he had said the wrong thing.
"Well, DAD. It is a good thing Calliope isn't a distraction then. I finished 3rd all while seeing here. So, do with that information what you want. I like her. This is not a fling. That is all you all need to know. I am going to see where it goes. We are dropping this now." Arizona was pissed. This is why she didn't tell her family about people. Everyone had an opinion.
Barbara quickly moved the conversation on directing her attention to Alex and Jo. She asked them about how they met, their wedding, everything she was pretty sure she wouldn't see from her kids for some time. The Robbins family quickly took a liking to Jo and Alex and were already making plans for visits. Jo had spent some time in Michigan growing up so she was more than happy to be invited to the Robbin's house on the lake this summer.
As the night winded down, Alex and Jo left thanking the Robbins family profusely for their hospitality. As Jo hugged Arizona goodbye, she whispered to her. "I am so sorry Arizona. I didn't mean to start anything." Arizona just smiled at her "Jo, it is okay. As you can tell my Mom is very invested in things. She would have found out. Don't sweat it. Thank you for coming by."
As Teddy and Tim headed down to their rooms and Arizona said goodnight to her parents. Thankful they didn't bring Callie up again. When there was something to tell them, she would. She had her ESPN interview tomorrow and that was her main focus right now.
As Arizona laid down, she grabbed her phone. Realizing it was midnight, she noticed how utterly exhausted she was. She rolled over and quickly sent a text to Callie.
-Hoping your family dinner wasn't as crazy as mine. See you tomorrow? – AZ
She didn't expect an answer so she as surprised when her phone vibrated.
-It was eventful, that is for sure. I would love to see you tomorrow. I have Sofia until the evening. -C
Arizona took a big swing with her next text.
-Would you and Sofia like to do lunch? If not, I understand. I just promised her I would see her. I don't break promises
Arizona was nervous. Was asking to spend time with Sofia too much, too fast?
-We would love that. She was actually wearing a polo that matched the one you wore today. Not to mention the bracelet hasn't come off since you gave it to her. 12 work for you? You can come here if you want. I can cook and we can go from there -C
-Sounds perfect. See you two then. I am beat. I don't know how you handle this Miami heat. Sweet dreams Calliope.
-I can handle the heat . You will learn eventually. Goodnight, Arizona – xoxo
Arizona couldn't help but chuckle at Callie's flirty reply. She knew if she started with the flirting, she wouldn't be going to sleep anytime soon. She put her phone down and rolled over. Sleep overtaking her after her exhausting day.
A/N: Well, the family now knows! Seems like these two have to have a chat about where they stand 😊
